Used to think the compacts were hideous... Nowadays I find the e36 compact rather gorgeous and this e46 one is already half nice-looking as the front end is pretty cool. Times change XD
A Compact 325ti 6 Speed Manual Sport with the Purple Tag Rack as standard is BMW's under rated bargain. Marc Gene called them a Baby M3 when interviewed by AutoCar in 2014 after driving their long term test car....his daily was an E46 M3.
I had two 325ti 5-Speed, one was really trash, the other decent considering 200k+ km and 6 previous owners. With just good tires (Conti Premium Contact 6) as the only "mod" that thing ate twisty roads so well.
Had the 5 speed and yep absolutely. Great performance, better noise, surprisingly practical, extremely well built and no rust. Find a good 325ti and you're in for a fantastic time (usual E46 care and maintenance required).
Hey thank you, that was me! Not actually a R26 but rather a heavily modified Megane 2 RS with a lot of Megane 3 RS parts. If you want you can have a look at some onboards and my rebuild series (currently on hold a bit) after my engine died on the Nordschleife this season. 😅

@@konsultatorthank you! :) Power is at 280hp and 400Nm of torque available from anywhere in the mid-rpm range which makes 3th and 4th gear mega viable for the entire track really. Car with my weight and a full tank was around 13xx kg if I recall correctly. So it’s around 12xx bare.
One thing that very few people know is that the Compact is immune to the rear-subframe cracks that the rest of the E46 range (more powerful models) are prone to.
Sounds amazing, handles great! I couldn't live with the looks of the E46 compact myself and got a coupe. Same track and wheelbase as the coupe. The modern BMW's make the compact less and less ugly!
It`s legal in Germany ;) Just drive to the TÜV and cancel the rear Seats. BTW... I have a E46 Compact too. With a Supercharger and it makes so much Fun! The CSL kill`s it!
Compact M-Package II looks great. And it is the last BMW with seperated lense headlights. Most stable and reliable E46 chassis by the way. Gotta love these cars!
Nah it's the headlights, that's why e36 compact is fine. Looks a little odd but not bad, while e46 looks like one of those spiders with a bunch of eyes. Or worse, a mercedes.

I have a modified e46 318ti with 18 inch Breyton wheels and Brembo brakes,the car is driving like a dream and the handling is wonderful ,real wheel driving on a hatchback is a joy
I do not agree that it is THE ugliest BMW, but i am not completely neutral having owned 320td (the 150 hp version). It has to have the M sport package to look less dull, but that goes for the sedan as well. The right colour also helps. The 'frog eyes' on the front give the car character in my opinion. Furthermore it is practical and not too common.
This…..THIS is where my dream bmw track car is. (Controversial 👀) People used to call the Ford RS200 ugly but I never agreed with that and the 46ti also has a similar ‘misunderstood’ stigma, mainly because of its looks. A long time back i had a fast lap with an e36 compact with the E36 M3 Evo engine and running gear. I was in my Tommi Mak Evo VI. The cars were extrenely closely matched. Great fun.
We have a motorsports series in the UK called BMW Compact Cup. They are all very lightly modified e46 318 compacts..tbey look great sliding around on rear wheel drive and produce some great racing.
i got a compact for the looks. when they are front swapped they look even more amazing. but damn he has the cleanest looking compact i ever seen its emaculate.
Might not be the prettiest becuase of the headlights... But God damn it sounds amazing. I think its pretty common for cars of this era getting a bit overheated on track (altho compared to other cars Misha has driven, this car did pretty good). And us Misha said, compared to modern BMWs this is absolutely beautiful car. I think BMW's slogan of "Sheer Driving Pleasure" fully fits to this car. Not something I think people can say on newer models.
Hi Misha. Greetings from Malaysia. Been following your channel and try not to miss it daily as I know you upload new videos very very frequently. Anyhow, I have the E46ti Compact as well. Really unique car as it's low in production number compared to other models. Mine is stock M54B25 (sadly auto tranny) apart from Zimmerman drilled rotors, bigger wheels, strut brace, rear cat delete with a H-pipe installed in their place and a BMC filter. How I wish I can upgrade the engine and transmission to what it is like in this video. Great car it is. ❤😊

Will change almost everything Misha recommended. Brake cooling is already ordered, full cage will add stiffness, engine and oil cooling solutions are ready to be installed and new suspension setup will follow 😁
We never saw that cars rear, but if it is cleaned (no M3 badge, no CSL) it can be a sleeper. Or you put a "316" badge on it, combined with a "Fehlende Leistung wird durch Wahnsinn ersetzt" sticker ((The) lack of power is compensated by insanity) All I have to say to the owner: Love BMW Compact, love this build, keep it as long as you can, 'cause this is a marvel!
I didn't actually know people hated the compact body. For my personnal taste, it's the most, and almost only BMW desirable body, as this constructor (and all german ones) tends to build oversized and overweighted cars. I like the shape very much ! It's sad it doesn't cut the weight though...
All those who say that the compact is the best e46 for the track, they exclude the e85/e86, which are e46s with a shorter wheelbase and much better chassis and aerodynamics.
Wheelbase is the same as every other E46 hence you can CSL or M3 spec the whole thing as a bolt-on including geometry wise using M3/csl suspension components. It is definitely one of the goofiest designs from BMW but I ended up getting one simply because of the suspension setup and wheelbase and also the fact it's a rwd hatchback which is a format I like. You can get a TON of stuff in the back when folding the rear seats. I have travelled in it with the back full of stuff and with the m-sport bodykit and the right wheels, it doesn't look so bad. I like the squat fat stance it has in the back. It's really just those front lights that are a bit fugly xD This one with csl drivetrain must be kick ass. I got a 325ti with Z4 style 103 wheels which actually look perfect on this car.
@@DankCarzMemes Look at realoem. I entered a 318ti E46 and 318is sedan E36 and looked at the rear subframes, similar design, different parts. There would be no economic advantage anyway for them to use the E36 base rear since it is also multilink. It made sense in the E36 compact to use the cheaper E30 setup but they decided to give the compact full fat in the E46 so it made sense to use E46 components and so they did just that.
What you said about Dutch drivers matches the exact thing we see here in Texas. The second you have any sort of turn in the road, people freak out and slam on their brakes. When it does get straight, they are going 20 mph below the speed limit and blocking the passing lane.
@@dan3092 actually the standard M3 is the green label one 3.2 turns lock to lock and it's slower than the purple tag... Technically the fastest rack for the E46 is the Z3 (e36 )and it's bolt on... The yellow tag ZHP and purple tag are 3 turns lock to lock.
UK MPH Speedo in the LHD car. I guess the donor CSL was a RHD pommy car. The sound is glorious. And the gearbox swaps cogs really nicely. I love the idea of this car. It’s kind of old school AMG in concept. ‘What’s the biggest motor that’ll fit? Let’s put that in’.

I think there was a dutch guy or girl who took a red e46 compact, put in a m54b30 and supercharged it, and cut some metal in the front to make place for regular headlights instead of the compact ones. Mega car.
You can upgrae your control arms to e46 m3 ones which help a lot. Also look at running a sqaure tire setup if youre not already add some front camber and toe out and youll be set.
My dream is to have you drive my manual AMG V8 swapped C class Compact on the Nurburgring 😁 it’s got a ton of upgrades and this year I’ll be throwing on some more parts and even some clk63 black series components 👀 also if you’re ever in Los Angeles, California lmk I’ll toss the keys your way 👍🏼

It definitely has character, but it's still not a great looking car. 1 series really solved 3 series compact constant problems with looks.

The rear Suspension isn't the same as the e46 the compact uses e36 rear suspension

On e46 chassis you can put S65 or s85 as well

e46 compact is a common race car base in uk bmw car club championship, in fact the championship winner this year was in one with a 330i motor in it
