- Hi guys,
I've got a lot of questions from viewers regarding some engine swaps we have done in the past so i thought i would try to make a short summary.
Hopefully you get some good ideas that you can apply to a future project yourself regarding diy engine mounts, transmission, engine position and stand alone ecu.
The car in the video is a BMW e36 and the engine is a five cylinder volvo engine that originally is naturally aspirated (the engine code is B5244s4). There are more videos on this channel about this BMW and the Mercedes 190e that you see in the end.
There are hundreds of areas to dive deeper into.

I see Audi A3 8p in the background. I also have A3 2.0 Tdi. I want to swap to VR6. Please advise on best engine for that swap. Easy swap from diesel to petrol
@@Formula1-Dave as a first swap i would say that a smaller engine with less cylinders always is simpler. For exemple it is easier to mount a smaller 4 cylinder straight engine versus a big bulky v10. Smaller engine equals more space in the engine bay for exhaust pipes, inlet and turbo. A naturally aspirated engine would be even more simpler, but small engines without boost are usually not so fun. I have never worked with the vr6 engines, but it seems like they are good engines that can handle quite a lot of power. A friend is mounting a vr6 engine in an old Volvo now. You find him on instagram @ brandtab. Maybe you can find some good ideas there for your swap 👍

People should just understand that a cars Chassis is just a body with interchangeable parts it's a shell essentially you can fit anything into anything

Thank you for those kind words. We are not working on project with a t5 conversion for now, but i will keep that in mind for future projects for sure.

same here my bmw x6 v8 engine is done and the used engine 9000$ im waiting for damaged bmw go to auction, but this will take a year, so for now can i take 4 cylinder engine from junkyard with its own ecu and same harness and wiring and give it 12v will it start without programing?

hey, I have an LR4, 3.0 petrol Supercharged HSE, year 2014 and I want to swap its broken engine with an LS engine. May I know if all compatibility is ok for these 2. And what all would I need to replace in my LR4 to have an LS engine fixed. Thanks AK
How do you make sure the trans is straight enough for the driveshaft to rear end? is it not that important to be straight?
What intake manifold are you running?
Did you use a volvo clutch or a bmw clutch?

Thanks man. everything is possible it is just if you think allthe work hours are worth it. If i remember correctly the 335i have twin turbos. That is always a bit more tricky to fit in but you could rebuild it to a single turbo system to save some space. Might not be the easiest swap if you never done anything similar, and might be expensive too, but fully doable.

@@dynochannel My main one is did you have to do anything crazy to get the transmission bolted up to the engine besides weld on a new bell housing? Or did the lengths match up well enough between the input shaft, clutch, flywheel, etc.?

I would not recommend b5254T2. 83 mm bore is weak and thin at top of cylinder walls. I am swapping b5254t4 for b5234t3 right now.

Hi,
Nothing special compared to any other engine swap i would say. Make sure you have enough space on the height. And check if your original oil pan fits.
There is also a jungle with different engine codes so make sure to get one that fits your needs.

What was the difference in weight bt original BMW engine and Volvo engine?
Sorry, we did not weigh it with a bmw engine in it.. we bought the car without an engine.
I had bought a freelander 1 as the first car for me to thinker with. Knew nothing about cars before hand, but I took it apart for a headgasket and oil seals replacement job. Drove it around for some time but the engine blew up. An oil leak while on the highway dumped all the oil out, and piston 2 slammed right through the side of the aluminum block due to heat and friction.
So, am I really going to put a 'new' 1.8l k-series engine in it, when the shitty land rover engine will always and forever be a liability? I'm thinking no.
Now, I'm researching the engine swap experience. Any thoughts on what I could possibly get away with? As far as I can see I have 3 different routes I can go: 1) a different but better land rover engine, if such a thing exists, I don't know. 2) a different brand but similar engine, like a Toyota Rav4, (but then why not just by a rav4, right?) 3) have some fun with it and turn it into a sleeper. Nothing crazy, no 1000HP stuff, but something to make heads turn as a freelander 1 zooms by.
I'm curious what you did to fit the intake manifold
Volvo v50 t5 intake. An hour or two with a drill and angle grinder. Did not film it unfortunately.
What transition and clutch did u use? And did I make the wiring yourself?

Transmission is a ZF from a Bmw 330 diesel.
Clutch is a Sachs 707.
And yes, we made the wiring ourselves. My garage buddy Engdahl Motorsport do them for a living.

Hey say I want to swap this engine into an e46 and use one of those custom digital speedometers that are made for it by id4motion, do you think it would work? Or would I have to use a different ecu? Would really appreciate ur input/recommendations
Say I use something like an ecu master black? Would the id4 digital cluster work as it would with the Bmw engine?
@@tariquetulloch6643 Hi, we usually use maxxecu on our project cars now, and it should work with the id4motion products. Dont know about the emu black though. Contact id4motion and ask them if it works 👍
What did you do to use the RNC manifold on the RN head?
Removed the vacuum-stuff on the underside and adjusted 3-4 bolt holes.

how do I need to modify the 960 oil pan?
you need to make it shorter since the t5 engine is shorter than the 960 engine. You also need to shorten the oil pipe within the oil pan.
And make sure the sealing surface stays flat after you weld it by using a fixture.
My plan is to swap 1999. C70 2.0 T5, in to a 1980. Ford Taunus coupe. It would be appreciated greatly to get any advice on the issues you faced. I have complete C70 that need some minor work to get it up to a good condition and i have bean presented with 1000euro Ford Taunus that has bean a project car but the owner decided to give up on it do to a lak of a number of parts that are impossible to find. My plan is to transplant as much as I can from Volvo to Ford and since Ford is rear drive, transmission is a bit of a dilemma. So, anything is welcome.
Sounds like a fun project.
We used a bmw gearbox with a volvo bell house welded to it. Most swaps here in Sweden use that combination.
Use an oil pan that fits with your front chassie beam. We used a shortened oil pan from a volvo 760 and also a shortened oil pipe inside the pan.
The you need to make your own engine mounts of course 👍
First of all amazing job! What flywheel, pressure plate and clutch did you use? And last question, if you have a complete donor car and you install all the electric in the swap car it is an easy way? Thanks for all!

I am Actually Trying to make this happen. The thing ist that I live in Germany an want to have it street legal. I’ve talked with my Tüv engineer and it is possible but tricky. I will use the stock turbocharged engine and will tune it later.
from which volvo is that oil pan?
It's a rewelded oil pan from a volvo 960. the oil pickup pipe inside is rewelded too. We saved us some time on this one and bought it already modified.
