      I love this movie. GG!!
The reason Maggie started the wacky record remix scene was she was played by Rah Digga, who got her fame from being in the underground hiphop group The Outsidaz. They only released one full length EP but for an independent underground group was a pretty good first album. Has at least two songs I still have in rotation to this day.
Obviously I am an old school underground hiphop head. Back when everyone was drooling over 2Pac and Biggie, there was a pretty great underground scene thriving.
Unfortunately, the scene kinda started to die down oddly enough when one of its underground hero's became the biggest rapper in the fuckin world. I'll give you a hint, Hi! My Name Is!
Not saying the independent underground scene is dead, its still there and has new upstarts coming up all the time. It just took a huge break and all the heroes, Mos Def, Atmosphere, etc, either hit the height of their fame or just gave up on trying after seeing that little bastard from Detroit blow up overnight. Especially because he was just a battle rapper with a shitty first album but had the number 1 hit for like a fuckin year straight. The scene was forever tainted after that.
Anyways, sorry for the rant. blah blah Rah Digga, The Outsidaz, yadda yadda great breakdown and review.....as always! And damn!! You're looking so much healthier!!

Matthew Lillard is not only a fantastic, underrated actor, he's a super great guy IRL. He was a guest at a convention I was working, the place was supposed to shut down at 9pm, but at 8:30 his line was still crazy. Dude stayed signing, taking pictures, and chatting with every single person in that line. didn't rush anyone, just a genuinely delightful human to interact with. I looove the concept of thirtheen ghosts so much, the ghosts are soooo cool and you can tell they put so much thought and work behind their designs, with the extra material from the dvd with all their backstories just makes them better. I wish we had a series of the ghosts and Matthew Lillard

    • @J.J.Jameson_of_Daily_Bugle
      @J.J.Jameson_of_Daily_Bugle Год назад +13

Yeah, they made extended backstories for each ghost, which makes them more interesting, however they did that as "dvd extra" rather then explain them in movie. In movie, they kinda just show up without any real explanation or backstory past "they are freaky ghosts". They just look freaky (seriously, all are amazing in idea and makeup is top tier).
Even back then as kid, I thought ghosts look cool as hell, but movie overall was quite weak. I haven't seen in in recent years, it might have improved with age, because I swear, some of those early 2000s movies look like masterpieces compared to crap we get these days.

The glasses thing comes from the fact that this is a remake of a 1960s film that used special glasses to show or not show the ghosts in the film (kinda like using 3D glasses but the red and blue are separated). For starters the flares in the movie are refered to as "Silver flares" by Cyris when we first meet Kallina. That's sigificant because since more ancient times silver was known as a purifying metal. It is said to be able to ward of negative energies, demons, as well as dark or evil spirits. Including the spirits of the dead. These flares were crafted with silver in them to make them a weapon for the dead.
FUN FACT: That's also why vampires couldn't see themselves in mirrors. Mirrors used to be made with a reflective silver backing and that silver wouldn't reflect them because they were undead evil beings.

He's happy to beat the tar out of Dennis and throw Cyrus into the spinning blades at the end. He was also fine with going after Arthur. What I wanted to see was how he would react if he came upon Kalina or Arthur's kids. Violence is supposed to be all he and the other ghosts know, so how would he react to them? So many interesting what ifs to explore.

I think the idea that Matthews character knew he was going to die, but went through with it anyway to help him. It was also a way of redeeming himself for helping a millionaire capture a bunch of souls for a evil purpose all just for money. He could've used his pshycic powers for good but instead used them to make a quick buck. The decision to go against everything he helped create to put a wrench in the evil dude's plan and save a family while he was at it was the ultimate redemption. Was also kinda symbolic he died by the ghosts he helped capture.

I mean, admittedly I was 13 and dumb, but it says something that the lore was so intricate and cool that it just made sense to me that this must be based on a "real" legend or something. @mellysomething6296 can you imagine the licencing nightmare that using anything other than snippets of (definitely not) other franchises would create?
But legal stuff aside, what your asking for would result in either a bloated unsatisfying mess of a movie due to not being able to give each monster the screentime it deserves, or effectively a cinematic universe which for the above legal reasons could never happen. Look how hard Freddy Vs. Jason was to make for evidence of that.
While it also left me wanting more, imagining scenarios in this universe and so forth, I don't think it's particularly fair to call the film lazy.

    • @mellysomethingclever

And a bloated mess? I’d rather a bloated mess than a run of the mill play by play horror disguising itself as high brow because it’s “aware” I would’ve fathered the focus be in the facility as opposed to the cabin.
If you think the only way to not have a bloated film is to basically make it exactly like every other film regardless of “satire” means you like run of the mill garbage and that’s fine. I however would like a little more.
Could’ve easily cut out Jules making out with the wolf, the weird sexy dance after the basement, the stupid double mirror peeping Tom scene. Etc to actually I don’t know WORLD BUILD. 😂

Besides putting anymore focus on any other monster would have also meant it had to be given a bigger role in the movie. That would have detracted from the point of the movie. It's not like Thirteen Ghost where all of the ghosts are already an important part, most of the monsters in the movie don't matter, the only exceptions being the zombie family and the mermen. The ballerina and the stand in for Pinhead kind of do too, but not so much they can't be easily switched with a different monster.
