The drama feels a lot more real as a breakdown of a relationship, them both just being such vastly different people that love each other. I've been through rehab more than once (and things have been good for around 7 years now), and at both the rehabs I've been too, and even some of the hospital run detox centers, there has been issues with staff supplying addicts. At one rehab there was a lesbian employee who was sleeping with almost all the young female clients and suppling them mdma, coke, and mushrooms.
    Also have too say, only someone who has not spent time outside in snow at night would think if you turn off a flashlight you can't see. Its so easy to see in the dark with snow. You really hit perfectly on the issue I have with most book adaptations. It's not the minute details, or even more moderate plot changes (though those CAN get irritating), it's when the make changes to the CHARACTER that changes who they are. For instance, I understand that the Shining is considered an amazing movie and Kubrick is genius, etc. etc., but the fact that Jack Torrence is so different and how he died changed his entire arc completely gets under my skin. He is still a recovering alcoholic with anger issues in the book, but it's played much more as a father with issues who wants to do better but is struggling, even more so at the hands of the hotel. You feel empathy for this guy. I like Jack Nicholson as an actor, but he did NOT portray this version of Torrence. It was far more manic. And then, in the book, his beautiful arc is concluded by him using his brief moment of lucidness during the final chase and attack to CHOOSE to blow up the hotel and himself along with it in order to give his family the chance to escape. The movie? yea no, he froze to death trying to kill his son, no redemption, no nothing. SIIIIIIIIIIGH

      Love that movie, almost more “inspired by” than adapted from- Jack has a great arc in the book, but without his internal monologue I don’t know how well you could make him as likeable and forgivable.
      & I love how Wendy gets more agency, action, and strength in the movie, correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t remember her being super distinct as a character in the novel. (there’s a great video on Kubrick book adaptations that discusses some of the differences in depth, I’ll edit the title here if I can find it)

    From my experience the book really is better than the movie about 8/10 times. A large part of that is usually due to the fact that when you read something you can picture it in the way that is most appealing to you, and another part is that books have more time to explore and create a scene/atmosphere than a movie does.

      Books are better then movies for two reason… A. You create your perfect vision for the visuals based on the writers descriptions of characters, scenarios, setting, etc…
      2. You get way more character development which ties you to the characters which makes you care more, often times movies can’t or just doesn’t chose to flesh out characters which overall hurts the story…

    • @LunaWitcherArt
      @LunaWitcherArt Год назад +25

      "Books are better than the movies" is usually true, but "the original is better than the adaptation" is less often true. The Matilda movie is better than the book; one of the few adaptations out there where they had to ADD stuff cuz the original wasn't long enough. The Heathers musical is better than the 1980's movie; the story is a lot tighter, the songs give better motivations for characters and plot points, and the comedy hits harder. And then there's Good Omens, which somehow managed to have a good book and a good show, though they each have their own things they chose to focus.
      Edit: OH YEAH, and an infamous example: Fifty Shades of Grey is not a good story by any means, BUT the movie is actually slightly better than the book due to changes made by the director in the first movie. It could have been *a lot* better, too, if the author of the book wasn't so tyrannical with changing anything from her text.

    I feel generally that media tends to be better in its original format bc it was made w its format in mind. This book especially is a psychological thriller that leans really heavily on the psychological part. A lot of the forward momentum of the book comes from Darby’s internal battles as she debates her next move knowing that any wrong move can get her and everyone around her killed. The movie is just… plucking events from the narrative and desperately jamming them together like puzzle pieces chosen from a set at random.
    Anyway… I’m going to go reread the book now 😃

    • @theyoutubeguide1109
      @theyoutubeguide1109 10 месяцев назад +3

      While I complete agree with you. it wasn’t even just the psychological part that the movie was missing. There are major parts of the book that made the book eerie and thrilling that are completely taken out and changed. Like when Ashley smashes Darby’s face into the table, the entire chapter where Jay and Darby escape with the car, the ziplock bag scene, Darby’s fight with Lars, Jay shooting and killing Ashley, and the ending. So much of the narrative is removed and some scenes in the movie are rewritten out of order. It honestly seems like the producers of this film purposely WANTED to make it bad for some reason. This is the first book to movie adaptation I would tell people that it wouldn’t matter whether they watched the movie or read the book first because either way, the book will not be spoiled for you. 😂

I think a movie that is based off of a book certainly can be bad for that reason, but I don't think that translating one unique medium into another will nessicarily make for a bad movie just because you supposedly can't take advantage of its uniqueness, which a good writer certainly can even when translating from a different medium, in my subjective opinion. This kinda reminds me of how people say that “The Manga is better then the Anime”. As someone who grew up with Anime. I used to hate people that would say that the Manga would be way better. As I’ve started to grow and get more into reading. I actually have to agree. A lot of the Writing and all Around Visuals are sooo much more detailed and get more in-depth then the Anime’s by a long shot. A lot of the Animation in the Anime can try and replicate scenes from the Pages of the manga, but just can’t get it down to the T. Best example is Junji Itos Manga’s Vs Anime Adaptations & Live Action Movie Adaptations. They just can’t replicate his masterpiece of an art style.

    Edit to say: I think this is the reason a lot of suspense films (that are based on books) fall flat. Books allow for so much internal speculation between the characters and the audience, like being able to witness Darby's thought process. That alone builds tension. But in movies, it's a lot harder to achieve this, so it all feels rushed, mindless, and often times Idiotic: you're missing the lead up to the decision and WHY the character is doing that specifically.

    I think one thing that's really interesting with book adaptations is how they are adapted. Books are a great medium for introspective main characters, but it can be challenging to show in a very visual medium (e.g. why Jane Austen's "Persuasion" works much better as a book and hasn't yet had a successful adaptation). I think a lot of times when "the book was better", it's a case of the movie not having been adapted in a way that puts the medium at its strength.
    That being said, I think there are some movies that have retrospective changes that end up enhancing the story. E.g. I think "The woman in black" works better as a movie than as a book.

Stephen King would be a good place to start since his books are easy reads that have WILDLY different kinds of adaptations in terms of quality. And in the case of The Shining you'd have two adaptations to compare, Kubrick's and King's own attempt.

Oddly enough, I read it right after having read Trump Tower (a "book" "by" Donald Trump) and those lists of expensive things were played totally straight in that one, so I found it even more incisive of that vapid culture.

    At risk of sounding cringe, I feel like a proud mama right now. I’ve been a sub since before you even started the TCAP series, and even though you were hella funny back then and your videos were still great, you’ve come such a long way since those days.
    The amount of pride you take in your work and the obvious level of hard work you put into every video is seriously impressive and the new setup where you’re moving around for effect is FANTASTIC. Really, love this- it’s especially fitting when you’re reviewing horror, but it works amazingly well here too.
    And perhaps the most prevalent reason for this proud madre energy is your scripts. The fact that you’re even reading off of a script is impressive, bc you’re awesome at making it sound as if you’re just chatting- coming up with these thoughts on the spot.
    But beyond that, your insights, your logic, your vocabulary and your eye/ear for detail are at 100%. I know people change as they mature, but you have become so analytical and comedically intelligent in such a big way over the past few years. You’re funnier than ever, and that’s saying a lot.

    Usually the book is better, because the story was meant to be a book, not a movie. Alan Moore illustrates this very well when talking about the film adaptations of his iconic comics, V for Vendetta and Watchmen. Both adaptations failed because the story of both were meant specifically for the medium of comic books, not films. Also the V For Vendetta movie is extremely americanized, when the comic was inspired by some political events that were going on in Britain at the time, while the movie makes it more closer to 9/11. Just from this example, you can see how many book-to-film adaptations completely fail to hold the soul and integrity of it's source material.

    The book is always better as a rule of thumb because you can just pack so much more information and detail into a book than you can a movie, it is also good because the reader gets to relate more intimately with the story, they read the words and generate the story in their own minds, whereas with shows and movies you're just a passenger to someone else's interpretation.

    Considering the amount of time it took you to finally get around to this, I’d love a yearly episode of you comparing a book to its movie counterpart.

    You should make a series out of comparing the books to their movies.

    Years back the husband and I got these reading lamps that were apparently marketed for breastfeeds in the night. They are actually amazing lamps though. Two little bunny ear lights that can be bended and shaped however you want, a soft but very strong clip, multiple choices of illumination. If you want a really great headlamp I’d look at these. They’re a little pricy at $20.00 per, but we’ve had them for years now and use them almost daily and they are still plunking along. You can find them in the book isle of target 🎯

    This is by far my favorite movie review you've done! I think you should do more movie/book comparisons in the future!!!

    You're the only content creator who's ads I actually watch through. They're gold. Man, I still can't believe you don't have a million followers on the tubes yet.
