As much as I absolutely love the recognition Jordan Peele has gotten for using horror to bring attention to the black experience in America, I think Rusty Cundieff is criminally overlooked as a pioneer. And it goes without saying that Spike Lee is owed like 10 Oscars for everything he brought to filmmaking for the past 4+ decades.

Yeah, it's great that Peele's stuff is getting the recognition it deserves but the whole idea of "elevated horror" is just an insult to everything great that came before. Horror movies have always been addressing topics like this, it's just that most people don't pay attention

@@maxpowers9327 As I understand it that's actually not too uncommon. A lot of times they'll show the film to test audiences and/or studio representatives before things are finalized so that they can make changes and do reshoots if needed. I'm guessing that's what happened here: They filmed the "hanging" ending, but the studio reps/test audiences wanted to see the dolls take him out so they authorized more funding to shoot the new ending for the final product. Sometimes this is probably a good thing and others it probably isn't (for instance, I much prefer the original ending to "I am Legend" over the one the studio insisted on), but if that's what happened here then I think it turned out well.

I agree. David Alan Grier is a Taekwondo black belt in real life. Displayed his real martial arts skills attacking Richard Garvy, the teacher, in the kitchen alongside Carl's battered wife and stepson. David's character, Carl/The Monster wasn't literally a monster physically outside of Walter's traumatized child imagination point of view, but Carl was a very strong, abusive psychopath. Carl was a very good, experienced street fighter at best. Monster had hands. He wasn't your typical abusive bullying coward. Battered the teacher like nothing. 😂As brave as Richard Garvy was for intervening to defend a helpless small child and female, he couldn't fight for shit.

Not because of it being "too radical and controversial"

I think a lot of people don't realize the female doctor at the rehabilitation thing is supposed to be like a metaphor for God, offering forgiveness and salvation, not because Crazy K deserved it but because he needed it, and Crazy K proved definitively he was not a soul that could be saved when he chose to still kill and was highly convicted killing in the name of selfishness was the way to live, that's why time was able to be "rewound" or you are "seeing something that didn't really happen" because the woman is God and God knows all things things in the past present and future and all things that happen and could happen and things that never even could happen. I mean, it makes sense, they have the Devil in the movie, why wouldn't they have God, it's sad a lot of people overlook it i didn't realize it until recently myself, but as someone who believes in God at this point in my life and knows it quite well i picked up on the metaphor.

I like how James loves horror, but I LOVE how he'll pick movies like this to indirectly touch up on issues happening in today's world. Even if it's not a movie relating to a problem he goes out of his way to do little things for us, like gore, heavy stuff or epilepsy warnings. Or that time he apologised about President's Day because of it happening in a high school because of the Florida shooting. Thank you James, you're a beautiful person!❤

@@blingsing5383 They are Hoodoo dolls, which is very different from Voodoo.. but the racist guy constantly calls them 'Negro-Dolls' or straight up 'N*-Dolls'...
In case you're curious about how Hoodoo is different from Hatian Voodou, or Louisiana Voodu; Hoodoo is something developed specifically by American black people. It was a mix of African culture and spiritual beliefs, native American herbology, healing, and folk beliefs, and more modern christianity and Catholicism.
Obviously the African people brought to America had only as much of their own culture as was brought in the minds of those who knew it. But a lot of the practices and rituals didn't work here, because they required things we didn't have.. different herbs, plants, clay.. etc. So they filled in the gaps with things they learned from native Americans who were also mistreated, and took what parts of christianity that they could tolerate. As you can imagine, many blacks and the first "African Americans" as the generations passed, were not interested in christianity. They kinda hated it. Because everything they knew about christianity was used to enslave them and excuse the inhuman behavior of their tormentors. So they just took the parts they could relate to, added it to their own rituals and created something entirely new and unique.
It's an interesting history of how good people coped with the absolute worst of humanity while trying to stay sane and keep their own humanity intact. The sheer strength and fortitude of those people from so long ago blows my mind.

Clarence Williams III is easily the best part of this film. He's so good in everything he's in.
