I have an ex mod 90 that had the 2.5na in it. It’s a slogger of an engine and it does has its charms. Like you though, I never found it’s hidden power and the hills in North Yorkshire were miserable! It was great off road and at low speed though! I do kind of miss it but I definitely don’t miss the non power assisted steering! Eventually a 300tdi disco gave its life to donate its engine and pas. I’ve not looked back!
My uncle has an N/A and an early turbo diesel both in very straight 90s. He’s currently moaning the N/A won’t go over 50 and the trailer kills it. The turbo diesel does go better by far. Both though make my 300tdi 110 look like a racing car.
I had an NA (still have the engine - good one), decided not to turbo it (not even Land Rover could get it right, the TD was an unreliable engine and weak when TCed) so I 300tdi-ed it. WOW! I did feel like I had a racing car for a while!
To be fair my uncles Turbo is on a D plate he’s had it just over half it’s life. It’s been fairly reliable only one head issue. But it’s only done about 80k from new. I had a 300disco I had nowt but trouble with so horses for courses I guess.
Don't know why but I do love the sound of a 2.5 ex-MOD engine even when starting cold. I had a chance to by an 80's ex-MOD soft top 110 back in 2008 for £300 and I'm still kicking myself for not buying it !!! Got a 90 TD5 now but still have a soft spot for a ex-MOD 110.
It's a funny world, used to love the sound of a 3.0 capri, air cooled 911 or my gsxr 1100 with its Cobra exhaust, now it's a 300tdi at tick over . . . Maybe I'm getting old? 👍
Had one of those engines in a 16 seat LDV minibus, was never a rocket ship, but good if you kept the momentum going and never slowed down for anything, fairly economical as well
The thing that I find hard to get my head around is how did Land Rover manage to make a 2.5 diesel engine with so little power I think a model T ford could have gone up that hill faster than that thing having said that I eagerly await the next video.
Ah, you have the Dutch specification engine . . . Mine was the same, great at 35 to 40 tootling along on the flat but show it a hill and it was dreadful.
When you consider that the J19 engine and the 200tdi are the same 2,500 cc capacity and yet the power out put is so different. I cant help but ask myself : what the hell were Landrover thinking of keeping the J19 engine in service for so long. It is a total waste of time for towing, which is what Landrovers are supposed to be good at, and if like me you live and drive on the Pennines on the snake or woodhead passes you will never get out of second gear unless you are going down hill. Silk purse and sow's ear springs to mind. But what a video!!!!! 10 out of 10 to you Mike great series of vids with loads of learning in them. Now!!! a word of advice which I,m sure you do not need. STAY AWAY FROM J19 that are in Landrovers. Best wishes from Yorkshire Rob.
Lol Rob - I have another to come soon! My mate who worked as a civvy mechanic at the TA depot in Middlesbrough told me the reason they kept them was for reliability and ease of service, but also because in the event of a nuclear war the electro magnetic pulse (EMP) would render most vehicles useless where the old 2.5 would go with a push if needs be Also a lot of squaddies were crashing the 300 Tdi due to the speed and power steering! MoD vehicles are limited to 50mph anyway Remember these young guys were not so smart and if you read the handbook for the MoD, they even tell you how to unlock the door and open it!
I reckon the story about a nuclear war was a cover story so that landrover didn't have to spend money on retooling. It was always the same with Landrover, The J19 was a take off of the old 2.2 B.M.C. engine and that was a load of crap as well, what the hell they were thinking of putting a turbo on a lump of crap like that I will never understand. There never was an indirect injection engine fitted with a ricardo type head that could come near to a direct injection engine for power or starting, even a Perkins 4/99 and 108 was a bad starter and gutless, remember the fire pot that they stuck on top of the engine to get it to start?, they called it-the THERMO STARTER, what a cock-up that was. Bedfords never made an indirect injection engine and the forces had plenty of them and they would start in a few feet with a tow even in a atom bomb cloud . If I was you I would go out and buy some garlic, a crucifix and get some holy water, so that you don't suffer the curse of the J19 again. Its good to have a laugh and it is all there is left to do with a J19 lump, so thanks for the laugh Mike. Very best wishes from Yorkshire Rob. P/S, hurry up with your next video, it's boring with out them. LOL
God preserve us . I always thought that sticking a turbo on a 12J and calling it a 19J was like polishing a turd and expecting it to smell better. The old 2.2 and the 12j engines were always dropping valves because the drivers had to rev them so fast just to keep moving up hills in second gear, or of coarse they could travel at a steady 15 mile an hour. . The 200/300 Tdi,s were short of a decent cast iron head, but there again why should Landrover start making things right after so many years of doing it wrong. LOL. Best wishes from Yorkshire, Rob.
What gearbox does it have Mike? LT 177, or something different? Tipping it's not an R380. As an Aussie I'm unfamiliar with this particular car. Our military LRs of this vintage used Isuzu 4BD1 and 4BD1-T engines and the LT95 box.
The perrntie almost had chance to buy one couple year ago in the UK for 5000 guy had imported it from aus and wanted rid, kicking myself for not buying it at that price going for about 12,000 now as well lovely landys
Should be an LT77 and LT230. The 110s used a 1.6:1 LT230 for the 12J engine, but I’m not sure about the 90. I think it be better with one than a 1.4:1, though. All the same, it should manage that hill without speed loss in third gear (I’d expect some speed loss in 4th).
@@BritannicaRestorations Mike I never got fuel warning light on although few times vas very love on fuel in a tank. Bulb is ok fuel gauge works fine. Any idea what could be? Nick
rust warning light ,,, they should be on all the time , dont worry about it , if at any time it goes off , its cos its broken , its a landrover thing. if it was red it would be the ---- need to spend money light ---- they are usually on too. Dont try plugging it into a diagnostics machine , they wont be fitted for another twenty years . hth
68 bhp is not to be messed with! You make me appreciate why I installed PAS in my 110!

Haha "fall in love and make a discovery" love it !!
I'm sure you're neighbors appreciate you're slow and careful driving no matter how hard you try.😀
I did take an LR3 up there in sport mode - over 85mph by the end of the road!

Wow i miss the ash tray in the later models between the wiper blades .oooh the old days
Thanks Mike for sharing this video update 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
looks like a joy to drive.
Like I said. If I have to be anywhere in a hurry with the Rover, I have to leave the day before.
Feel that turbo kick in!!!...wait a minute.

Looks like it does good even better in a 2800lb jeep

Pah u need the mighty 91 racing stallions the stage 1 Kicks out. Lovely work mike
Pity it is not plated as it would be good to take on a run
Good work Mike, it looks like the steering wheel and shaft is moving side to side when idling at the end of the video?
Good lord it's slower than a slug on crutches.
Lol!
What is the orange light on the instrument panel indicating?
Low fuel - only 10L in the new tank

Got about as much power as my petrol Series III.
Mike is it possible to bolt a turbo to these engines?
No - the turbo had lower compression if I recall
2.5L NA Diesel
okay. I guess it just has enough power to move it
with a Distributor Type Fuel Injection System it can be very long lasting
Nice private road, a lot more privacy than the busy one, Does it get ploughed in the winter?
Indeed! Sometimes 3 times a day if there is a bad storm!
