  • @AndrewKNI

    Great video. The Defender remains a popular genuine utility truck in the UK despite being basic. However, its very simple to repair and many are kept well into old age. I drove them when I was in the territorial army and they are so robust. The wide pedals at your feet is to allow the driver to wear big heavy boots etc and they don't rub against each other. Driving style really changes when in a Defender. Well done for doing something different :-)

      It's a cool vehicle!...Our Lotus dealer just recently became a used Land Rover Defender retailer (90s and 110s) and has a dozen for sale on the lot (mostly from the 1990s). They all have been refurbished and are in great condition. I like the fact that they are very simple inside, well built and what I read was that the diesel gets 28mpg which is amazing for it's size. My only hesitation on getting one would be the performance. I think around town it would be fine, but I read the acceleration is glacial and would make me think twice on getting it on the freeway with all the maniacs on there. The UK made/makes a lot of cool vehicles.

    Just the sound of the starter and engine - so many memories - my dad had a 1989 version in UK for the farm vehicle (and teenager social use...!). It was the first vehicle I was allowed to use alone to visit friends/go out. Great to hustle over rough country lanes. Good times and great tool. Ours was a 110 commercial 2.5 TD - missed out on tdi by 1 year - still quite talky and responsive unto 60mph. It has characterful turbo whistle - not convinced that was the direct injection tdi , it sounded like the td. Thanks for the upload.

      Someone with sense just seen 2 reviews on the the new defender, Richard Hammond's review and some asshole off top gear, least said about the latter the better, such a prick, anyway the new defenders are nothing more than Chelsea Tractors, I chuckled at the 25mm kerb test at 25mph, really wow. I know for a fact that any serious off roader or expedition driver wouldn't even consider using the new Defender for anything other than a trip to the local grocery store.

    You should take it off road, as a daily driver it's a good vehicle I own a 300tdi 110 county station wagon for 9 years and love it, I believe the defender you were driving is in fact a 200tdi, the 300tdi were produced between the years of 1994 to 1998, I have the early 94 model no EGR, you can't drive a defender without taking it off road where it belongs. Good video though and glad you enjoyed driving a great British Icon. A Landy owner.

    Also my I recommend form a British Land Rover enthusiasts, that when turning on the car that you turn the key to the first position (doesn’t start the engine) that will change the engine ( then one light will turn off of the dashboard) then turn it fully in (starting the engine). This will improve the life of the engine.

    • @federicoacker5672
      @federicoacker5672 4 года назад +2

      @@jamesclarkson3009 You right, it´s a 200TDI (the Defender version with the high positioned turbo, and low manifold, so must be original), a big step forward from the Diesel-Turbo, and basically same motor than the later 300TDI. Everybody says that´s a great engine (even with some advantages from the 300TDI, for example the water pump is bigger, and stands in a lower position, so it could be less affected by a coolant lost), But the big problem with 200TDI is that were build for a short time (only 5 years 89-94), instead 300TDI was built almost ten years, first in England, and later on (when TD5 came) in Brazil where the rights were buy by a company named MAXION at that time (later bought by other engines company named MWM) and built in Brazil for many vehicles, so it´s much easier to find parts for the 300TDI (for example the cylinder-head are no longer available for the 200TDI). The good news is Spain Land Rovers are almost rust-free, and this vehicle looks very clean and nice (that Defender never work, or been in real off-road), but the fact that has to be imported and all-that-jazz, turns into... lets say not cheap...

    Would I have a Defender as a daily driver? yes, and I have had 1 for 10 years and will never sell it. my Defender is a '94 Model 300TDi 110 County Station Wagon, this one I believe is a 200TDi, they are great off road and take a fair bit of getting used to, the driver seat position is very good, very commanding view of the road, the early defenders were basic mainly because Militaries world wide wanted a vehicle that could be repaired in the field with minimal electronics (basically TDi's or Naturally Aspirated versions only) very nice to see the younger generation appreciating a purely mechanical monster. try sitting in a car and seeing one in the rear view mirror :-)

    • @peteralexharvey
      @peteralexharvey 5 лет назад +1

      My 110.... all wheel drive - no diff lock by default. The diff lock is for locking the center diff. This guarantees drive to both axles but does not lock either axle. I accidentally tested this out by putting a tire chain on opposing tires (one front and one back) while on ice/snow. I locked the diff. Only the chain-less tires spun and I did not move. My plan is to replace the diff on each axle to air-lock diff's.

      They are permanent 4wd but you need to lock the diff when doing proper offroad stuff otherwise you'll get stuck pretty quickly. Good tyres are important. Locking the diff basically makes it like a part time 4wd in 4wd.

    Jealous man, there’s a local car dealer here in my home town that has one for sale, but’s it’s a 1989. It’s the short wheel version and has the rear tire mounted outside on the rear bumper and it might have a aftermarket lift on it or cube the aggressive tires he has on it but seems to sit a little higher than this one. I believe from its Europe which I hear they have horrible rust issues but man he’s asking 26k for it and if I had the money I’d still buy it. Mainly for the cool factor.

      You'd pay 5-10,000€ here in Ireland for the 110 in the video even in its immaculate condition without rust. Most of them here are in good condition with minimal rust, but in all honesty LR used better steel in the 90s than any other years because the most defenders that are surviving the test of time are from the 90s here and the chassis generally is absolutely perfect, mine was and so are a few lads I know, compared to later models

      @@euanmcg1748 yea for sure mate, we only began using salt in winter on the roads within the last couple of years so its kept everything pretty sweet, you'd easily buy a tdi here in good nick. My 95 had 2 chassis holes but the rest was very strong, even the footwells strong as anything. Was a hole under the windscreen that wasn't too kind to the bulkhead but I've since got it welded professionally and now I've a nice straight 95. But as I said you'd buy a decent tdi here, not many totally rotten ones

I would consider Jeremy clarkson ,who always sees cars according to simplicity,and also has a great taste on cars ! Anyways, I hate the new defender ! It looks very ugly ! And many people argued with me that the new defender is better in off-roading,and they also were claiming that a modern computerised d3 can take down an old school defender !
