My 1989 110CSW was a TD, I had a Defender spec 200tdi LR repower kit fitted back in late 1994, rebuilt the engine myself 5 years ago after 360.000 miles & 24 years. Still going strong, done nearly 1850 running hours since rebuild.
Hi Mike, love your content. I was just wondering I have a discovery 200tdi in my defender and u want to pipe in a original air box with snorkel but the pipe layout I'm struggling with don't suppose you have any tips ?
That would be a good video... how to remove the mmobilizer plunger so it starts from a regular key (no FOB). A titanic video would be how to convert, or explaining whats involved, in the process to convert a TDI into a natural aspirated one so to eliminate the turbo associated problems... Another great video
Depends on what version of 300Tdi you have - all 30Tdi have a stop solenoid - however on the vehicles with factory security the solenoid has extra protection to keep the engine stopped if broken into. If you were to remove the plunger you would have to stall to stop every time! Converting a 300Tdi to a naturally aspirated would be a step backwards to save the price of a turbo cartridge (from C$75 AliExpress) and a huge reduction in power
I wish I could have stayed longer with Mike when he did the video back in September, but I had to get back to the British Invasion in VT to promote the intoduction of the kit. Mike's a really switched on guy with no BS. Next time, I hope to stay longer - with Jameson Scotch!!
Hi Mike i see this ages a go and dug it out, i have a 40 year old 110 na pre Defender and want to fit a Discovery 300TDI R380 and LT230 drive train, i have a LT77 remote sellector and conversion kit for the sellector for the box, hopping to locate gear leaver in original 110 position, is this conversion posible and was wondering if you or anyone on here had done one at some time, keep up the good work mate your post are a god send
I have same type of conversion, using LT77 ....only problem is there is nowhere to lock the crank when doing cambelt changes because the bellhousing is not drilled for the pin!!!!!
@@BritannicaRestorations Oh you would love this one. It runs like a top though the parts support has been a real booger. How difficult would you say swapping to a 300TDI would be?
Pretty straight forwards - I think the MPi was only fitted to the Italian police 90's - a few came to Canada but were soon converted to Tdi I think some Discovery's had them too - hard to find part for them here
@@BritannicaRestorations Thank you for the information my southern neighbor (I'm in Alaska). I am really starting to lean toward the 300Tdi swap. It saddens me some though.
I’ve got another conversion idea to upgrade a 300 tdi , how about a td5 alternator with vacuumpump at the place of the airconpump. For more amps and blanking off original vacuumpump. Tell me wat you think.
Good day still loving the videos. I don't work on landies very often . Have you had fun with 2006 lr3 parking brake modules, cables and adjusting. very finicky fun .not . Actually pain in butt lol. I'm not sure if you've made a video on this . Cheers 🍺
Thank you .harness connector on park brake module corroded , couldn't take the wiring pins out to clean the properly . Ridiculous. Sprayed oxidation cleaner . Let's see when I get back from vacation if other men got it working 😳 Cheers 🍻
I have a 1988 TD and I am thinking to convert it to a 200Tdi because I thought it could be easier. Probbaly the 300 Tdi is a better option and simple, right?
@@BritannicaRestorations I got a Lightweight with a 300Tdi installed and probably will swap it with the TD. I think it shall be better balanced the power of each one.
Hi Mike and Michael. I’m in the UK. Have we a site to go to for this kit? I’ve got my eye on a turner rebuilt 300tdi to replace my trusty 2.5na. 1987 ex MoD 110.
The whole idea of this conversion was to swap out the old 2.5NA and replace it with a 300Tdi, so you didn't have to weld engine mounts, and the hoses supplied would fit correctly. You could put a stubby R380 in place of the LT77, but they are not cheap and hard to find used ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/product/short-bellhousing-r380/
@BritannicaRestorations Thanks for the info 👍 my 1984 110csw definitely needs the 2.5 NA swapping out for the 300tdi, I'll probably leave the old lt77 in for the time being . Thanks from Norfolk UK 🇬🇧
Disagree about the TD5. I have a 300TDi D1 and a TD5 D2 here in Oz, where diesels were far more common than V8s. TD5 is a great engine, it's only let down by LR stupidity with ancillaries. However, you DO need an OBD2 scan tool. I have a Nanocom. TD5s are really tuneable. 300s are easier to fix though.
Hi Mike, I've just fitted a disco 300tdi engine into my series 3, 109, apart from a few teething issues, the main issue is the s3 gearbox seems to be made of cheese 🧀, ie keeps jumping out of gear when decelerating, is there a better option ?, i still have the box from the donor car, think its an r380 !!! Any info would be greatly appreciated 👍🏻
Ha! Here goes a 'can of worms' moment! You can fit an R380 BUT it is longer that the series box, and also you need a conversion kit from Ashcroft's ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/product/series-5-speed-kits/ Not cheap! Also (having had experience of fitting one last year) the box is longer by 4 inch = this means moving the engine forwards (we did this, but it posed a lot more problems) Also take into consideration if you keep the engine in the original position, that the transfer case crossmeber and the crossmeber behind the transfer case will have to be moved back - also a right old fanny about with linkages for the 4x4 and Hi. Low selectors - also props may have to be modified to suit It can be done - but it is a chew on - maybe someone here has some better options?
@@BritannicaRestorations thank you, but that sounds like too much hard work. Is the s2 box stronger or could something be done to my S3 box to make it better, what causes it to jump out of gear ??
Thanks for asking, Christopher. Kits will be ready for sale in May along with a RUclips tutorial on the transformation. Paddock Motors UK will be the world wide distributor.
Yes, I'm afraid so. I have to travel 20miles in any direction to fill up with LPG. Not forgetting the same problems that electric cars face with out of order, empty pumps, garages stopping selling. Thus dirty diesel is on its way..

Actually this is an old video - I am not sure if this kit/project is still running
I have same type of conversion, using LT77 ....only problem is there is nowhere to lock the crank when doing cambelt changes because the bellhousing is not drilled for the pin!!!!!
The 300Tdi has the timing pin tapping in the adaptor plate…
This kit has a timing tool that slips onto the nose of the crank and finds TDC. Put the pump pin in and you're all set.
I recently converted a 200tdi to 300tdi cylinder head
Great video....I am considering a 300TDi into a MPi Defender. Any suggestions?
Alternatively, I could overhaul the MPi....
I would not have an MPi within 100 miles of my shop!
