also thanks for this video! i loved to see how a professional talks about the s5's photo capabilities - and how it's "good enough" for the work you do. seems like it's really the hybrid cam I was waiting for a looooong time ! :)
I am a stills-only shooter. I've been shooting with Panasonic MFT cameras for several years and a few other Canon and Nikon cameras. When I heard about the S5 II I was so tempted to jump up to full-frame again, then I got to use a Canon R7 and realized how amazing Panasonic's DFD is for stills. The Canon PDAF doesn't seem any better for still shooting, maybe not quite as good. I don't need amazing continuous AF. I found an open box S5 for $700 off the new price and jumped on it. A FF camera, 14 stops of DR, live composite and the amazing handling of my Panasonic cameras. I could not resist it. Lesson learned: Panasonic handling, controls and even AF (for stills, mind you) are the best in my opinion.
The best video about this camera I have ever seen. I’ve been doing research in this piece of equipment for about a month now and u sir provided deep knowledge as well as incredible samples. Thank you for making this video
Your work is amazing. The intro is wonderful. I own the S5 for few monthes as a hobbyist and i enjoy it a lot despite poor autofocus. Using a LED Falcon Eyes F7 II to improve portraits in low light.
Watching this in 2023, but excellent review!... finally the prices have dropped down enough for me to get my hands on the S5. I think you're absolutely right ... the usual Vlogger reviews tend to Focus -no pun intended- on continuous AF, face detection and how much they hate contrast based AF. But if you are a bmpcc user and are used to vintage manual lenses to begin with you're going to be just fine. All I wanted was to do a bit more photography work without having 2 backpacks and this is about it PS: What lenses did you used in your china town shoots?
LUCAS ECHAVIDRE - STREET WORKOUT some software makers (such as Adobe) are a bit slow to release their RAW support. In this case, as the sensor is the same as another model that the software already supports, if you change the camera listed in the exif data of your photos to be that camera (in this case S1), the software will open it and the RAW’s will work. The software thinks it’s an S1 photo so opens it just fine. You need an exif editor. I use one on Mac called exif editor but there are lots of them
amazing and practical. photos ain't my bag---neither is AF. You hit all the points that interest me and the S5 looks like my next camera...when it's done----an S1H void of the superfluities and provide confusion in the menus and doesn't require a fork lift to shoot hand held. Really prefer the look to Sony as well. Like you said, a GREAT time to be doing this on any level. I think Panasonic knocked it out of the park on this one.

As I wait for my S5 to ship, I look through RUclips to see what others have done with it. I've seen enough videos and tests, that I felt comfortable pre-ordering the S5. Having shot a feature with the GH5, I have come to love the Panasonic color science. I also own the BMPCC4K. So, like you, I don't heavily depend on AF. But, seeing how much AF has improved in the S5, it was one more feature that ultimately lead to my deciding to get it. Thanks for sharing your experience with the S5. I really liked what I saw of your S5 shots. Cheers.
You're the only person who has done a vid test driving both photo & video. Thank you! I came across your video while searching for "S1H versus S5". I'm trying to decide between 1 S1H or 2 S5s. Have you used the S1H at all? Trying to find advice.
great video did you test 5.9k on atoms ninja v yet and how it would look as you have the Blackmagic 6k and used to RAW video? if you could make comparison would be great!
Watched a ton of reviews that were of no use whatsoever... until I finally stumbled over this one. Fantastic review, amazing shots and great to listen too, thank you very much. One question though, which lens did you use? Thank you
Great review and it’s very interesting to see what a working professional thinks. Did the camera feel robust in build to you compared to your own cameras?
Brian Andrews no prob Brian. Thanks for watching. I used the 20-60 3.5-5.6 lens for everything (that’s the only option I had). I want to try the sigmas on this cam tho!
Great great review. Would really love to see more on the photography side of this camera. Like dynamic range etc. And great to see someone test this camera and shoot with flash. How good is the dynamic range in terms of photo? I got myself the camera with the 50 1.4. Is it possible to see somwhere the photos with full quality? Loved the photos with the tattoo artist
Whooa. 7 minutes of your video felt like a minute. I think your video is the best one out in the RUclips on S5. Im currently shooting s1h for all my videos. Im also looking to order A7S3 as my vlog or run and gun shoot camera mainly for autofocus. However, S5 came up and it seems like its got OK autofocus for my need.. I cant make my decision. Do you think S5 would be a good B cam to my S1H? Wish I can just buy them all... Thanks for your video. Subbed.
Great review! Very helpful. I was thinking bout picking up the GH5 but was leery about the mft system so now that they announced the S5, it seems the way to go. People have been complaining about the autofocus but I think it’s good enough and it’s the most feature packed full frame mirrorless camera out right now at this price point.
Thanks Deric. Yeah man if you film yourself with this camera the autofocus will be fine. The image quality is amazing and you can’t go wrong with full frame for hi end feel from that shallow depth of field. Only hurdle is the lens options, but that will grow.
Great to read all your insights Peter! I feel like this camera may be a perfect fit for me but I share the concern about AF. Could you elaborate a bit more on your experience with this now you've been using the camera for a few months? A large part of my work will be interviewing other people so it's quite important I don't have to be concerned about them being in focus.
How do you connect it to the studio flashes? What trigger do you use? What flash is it? Do you have some advices for flashes and trigger for the S5? Thanks a lot, great photos!
This video made me a subscriber, because this camera is on my top 3 camera wishlist :) I like the way you explain things. I have a quick question though....was there a specific reason why you cranked up that ISO to 4000 in the scene where the lady was walking in the field?
your photos look great. I dont know if you know indepth video stuff though. your footage looks a lot grainy most of the time because of high ISO i assume.
hey sir, you are a really great photographer . In this video you just shown me lots of amazing photo of your great captured. I just subscribed your channel. Really Iv to learn more about photography . Im also a photographer.
For the fashion photo shoot it was great. What was the LUT / grade you used on these images and did you use lightroom or capture one to edit them? many thanks
Fantastic review Peter! I really LOVE my Pocket 6K, but I have an issue with moire when shooting knees up shots of business dudes with ties. I rarely get moire, but when I do, it usually happens with am above the knees shot and it drives me nuts since that's 75% of my work. So I was thinking of getting a Rawlite OLPF for it, but since the S5 has been announced, I've seen some nice footage from it and in the right hands, the camera gives the nice thick color that I'm used to with my Pocket 6K, especially the Todd White fashion shots. I also love the EVF option of the S5, I use a Zacuto Gratical HD for my Pocket 6K and it adds a lot of weight and has extra power requirements. I would really love to see some side by side shots of the S5 and Pocket 6K with a subject so we can see color (v-log and Cinelike) and see them side by side in a moire comparison too. Man, if you could find a way to test it, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
Hey Will! Wow yeah Moire. Such a specific problem. I have seen it on occasion with the 6K. I’ll do a test comparing the two cameras. My instinct is that the S5 might have worse moire because of the down sampling to 4K. (I could be wrong!) As far as dynamic range goes, if you are used to working with braw you will miss going back to the .mov S5 files. But if you can adjust your color correction workflow you are golden! I’ll get some more tests and videos under way!
@@shootMEpeter I love working in BRAW but if I can have similar performance as far as color and image smoothness from the S5, plus have no moire and the built-in EVF, I would be golden. Man, it would be great if you could share some tests. I think I'm gonna order it anyway. Your video of the BAM pasta has me psyched. Cheers!
I been wanting to get a new camera, I am an independent filmmaker. I have an array of Nikon AF lenses, which was pushing me towards the Nikon Z6II. Any recommendations between the two? How do you think the two cameras compare regarding LOW LIGHT shoots? I get that the Nikon Raw has line skipping, which is limited. How does the Lumix S5 do with adapted lenses? All in all, I am a little afraid of their lens costs and am very undecided. GREAT VIDEO by the way!
Lowlight video is great on the S5. I have no experience with the Z6ii but since they both can shoot raw via hdmi (if you want) they are very similar. The s5 is a great cam but I still use my Bmpcc6k most of the time for the braw workflow and slow motion capabilities. The great thing is that in today’s camera market you can’t really go wrong! Good luck with your choice and sorry for my non-answer haha
Amazing review! First review that gives me a proper impression how the camera handles in the hands of an experienced professional. Question: how does the film quality compare to something like the BMPCC4K? I've been looking for a new camera, the BMPCC4K seems like the easy choice for cinematic quality but I'd hate to lose stills ability also. I'd love to go for the S5, but I'd need to know how to video quality in post holds up to the BMPCC4K.
Thanks Niels! Bmpcc4k: - 12bit color - Braw workflow (white balance adjustment) - 4K 60p 12bit raw - Wide array of MFT lenses and unlimited adaptable lens options - Battery sucks - Ssd media is cool! - File sizes huge S5: - You won’t really notice 10bit vs 12bit - It’s super sharp (looks very close to my Bmpcc6k on a 4K timeline) - Has more dynamic range than the bmpcc4k and Bmpcc6k (doing a vid on that soon) - Full frame! (More filmic look easily) - Shoots stills in great quality - Has a ton of features - Battery life is phenomenal - Disadvantage is not as many lens options - File sizes small - can shoot raw video eventually The S5 has amazing picture quality that’s clean and filmic in V-log. The 14+ stops of dynamic range goes a long way. So for me it comes down to how much you process your images and how important that is vs storage and lens collecting. Hope this helped.
@@shootMEpeter Thank you for the elaborate answer! I feel like going for the S5 will be a good idea, as for both cameras I'd go for Canon FD lenses with a converter anyways. Thank you!
Hi - thanks - Does having I0 bit make a considerable difference to video. Is it easier to grade. I'm a Nikon DSLR user I was going to get a Z6 but wondered if 10 bit was going to make any difference.
I have the canon m50. Im ready to upgrade. Im looking for a camera dedicated to more filmaking and im leaning towards the Panasonic brand. How is the battery life and record limit on the S5...or even the S1H
I also have a G9 and mostly use it for stills. I love Panasonic and just pulled the trigger on the S5 after this review and others like it. I feel like the S5 is something I can grow with for several years whereas the G9 maybe not so much. Not sure if I will end up keeping my G9 as a B cam or sell it.
Peter, I do have a question---the peaking feature---does it work well??? I know the peaking on my G9 really often obscures the image and doesn't always seem accurate. I hope that's not the case with the S5. Best peaking IMHO: Fuji---elegant, clear, and accurate!
William Ridenour so the real answer is that you have to test and know your camera. When I get a new camera I push the exposure on the same scene and take note of the zebras and histogram. This allows you to really know what your limit is. I just realized writing this you might be talking about focus peaking? If so focus peaking is tough to nail down on the Bmpcc6k.
Hi Peter, how would you say was the experience with manual focusing on the panasonic lens? Allegedly they offer settings to make it linear but I just don't know if it'll still be too weird or unpredictable when hand pulling focus.
0:07 I'm a noob in the world of photography so don't laugh at my question... do you use filters or some lens to make your video look like a movie like this ? thanks for responding me. (You also win a sub)
It’s a good question! Quick answer if the darkest black is 0 and the brightest white is 100, a more movie look doesn’t go to 100 on the white area. Something that looks like a video camera shot it will be super bright in the whites. The other thing is adding color to shadows (darker areas) and highlights (brighter areas). If you use Lightroom checkout the toning tab and add some blue in the shadows and yellow in the highlights. There are a lot of things to it, but those are the basics! If you search more on RUclips, there are some great explanations!
@@Chris-bi3vy the answer is the same actually! Photo and video film looks are the same. The highlights in the sky aren’t set to 100. I pulled them back. The shadows have some blue added to them. The Lightroom example is just an easy way to pull a video still in and mess with the colors. You should also search “movie stills library” bring them into your video editor and study the colors and brightness levels you see.

@@shootMEpeter Thank you, I appreciate you taking time to respond. The Mmpcc6k workflow difference you mentioned is good info I didn't know about
Amazing review!
Bmpcc4k:
- 12bit color
- Braw workflow (white balance adjustment)
- 4K 60p 12bit raw
- Wide array of MFT lenses and unlimited adaptable lens options
- Battery sucks
- Ssd media is cool!
- File sizes huge
S5:
- You won’t really notice 10bit vs 12bit
- It’s super sharp (looks very close to my Bmpcc6k on a 4K timeline)
- Has more dynamic range than the bmpcc4k and Bmpcc6k (doing a vid on that soon)
- Full frame! (More filmic look easily)
- Shoots stills in great quality
- Has a ton of features
- Battery life is phenomenal
- Disadvantage is not as many lens options
- File sizes small
- can shoot raw video eventually
The S5 has amazing picture quality that’s clean and filmic in V-log.
Thank you!
Awesome! Nice some old glass. Looking forward to seeing what you create!
Cool!
Which flash do you use for street photography/portraits?
scusami ma perche non mi rispondi? meglio lumix fujixt4 oppure lumix s5???
Would you recommend it for a beginning film student over say the gh5 of bmpcc 6k? Or wait for the gh6?
Hi - thanks - Does having I0 bit make a considerable difference to video. Is it easier to grade.
I'm a Nikon DSLR user I was going to get a Z6 but wondered if 10 bit was going to make any difference.
hi, what kind of speedlight/ flashing systemdid you use?
Thx
I have the canon m50. Im ready to upgrade. Im looking for a camera dedicated to more filmaking and im leaning towards the Panasonic brand. How is the battery life and record limit on the S5...or even the S1H
Dope
Wow. Beautiful work. I’ve been on the fence re S5 or A73/4. I have the G9 and love Panasonic. So you know which way I’m now tilting. Thanks
William Ridenour PS a lot of people praise the Fuji cams. I need to check one out!
Which one would you choose, the S5 or the A7C?
@@shootMEpeter My bad ! i wasn't talking about the picture at 0:07 sec but the video at 0:09 (thanks for responding me :D)
@@Chris-bi3vy the answer is the same actually! Photo and video film looks are the same.
The highlights in the sky aren’t set to 100. I pulled them back. The shadows have some blue added to them.
The Lightroom example is just an easy way to pull a video still in and mess with the colors.
You should also search “movie stills library” bring them into your video editor and study the colors and brightness levels you see.
as first mirrorles camera and partner of my Pentax k-1, could be an nice camera, specially if im looking for somethig good for video too
