This tutorial is great for people who’re keen to use traditional paint techniques, brushes and materials on a wall mural, rather than spray paints.
I take you through the steps to create a rad street art mural featuring Marlon Brando, River Phoenix and a James Dean lookalike, as well as passing along some of my best tips like base painting your main figures in white house paint, to ensure the ink colours come out super bright on darker backgrounds. You’ll see the artwork come together with some awesome time lapses and get a sense of how you can use layers to construct your mural.
This wall was painted for FORM's 2015 PUBLIC Street Art festival in Perth, Western Australia, and I’m painting alongside two rad artists Melski (www.melskiart.com/) and Brenton See ( brentonsee.a....

My name is Fieldey, I’m a surf, skate and street artist from Australia. I started this channel 5 years ago when I was an unhappy corporate designer yearning to become an artist. Since posting my very first video I’ve been on a crazy journey from teaching myself to paint surfboards and skateboards, to painting large-scale street art murals!
Turning my passion into a full-time career has been a massive learning curve and I want to pass on the skills and knowledge I’ve learned, as well as inspire others who’re just starting out on their creative journeys.
I post on Saturday every fortnight, sometimes more, and you can expect to see easy to follow, Mad Skillz Masterclass tutorials, Artist Insider vlogs and inspirational projects that I’ve been working on.

@@TytiannaBryant9453 I'm guessing he means people were talking about the cigarette in the character's mouth? But I haven't seen any comments about it.

Beautiful work
I was afraid to paint a portrait on the wall but I will give this a try. thanks for posting your painting process, this helps!
Good luck! It's not easy, but remember that you can always keep painting until it's right.
So while I was painting a wall mural a couple of weeks ago, we also filmed it as a tutorial for Molotow™ One4all inks which was, as it turned out, super annoying to do in a car park. Also of note was the face that the middle guy turned out to be a James Dean impostor - GASP - and someone reported the mural to the council because of the cigarette in his mouth. Despite the challenges, it's really cool seeing this wall come together on a video -
someone reported your painting? Some people have no taste.
Your art and videos are awesoem, instant love :)
falling love with you in 3... 2.... 1..... hahaha Nice video. I following you because I would like paint my windsurf board. Thanks from Florida.

Bad Ass! Beautiful Work!
THANK YOU!
You're so good
wow u are amazing
SO AMAZING!!! Since this is 7yrs old, do you have another clear top coat you prefer now? Something exterior use that can withstand weather, UV, not yellow, and durable enough that it can withstand some touching? To protect an outdoor painting the size of a door.
amazing vid, take my like, sub and respect
i am painter, should be muralist as well but never had practice, only sketches that other people did
so as i have comissions to do murals, this is very handy tbh
amezing artist
Amazing work and very inspiring! Could you please comment the link where you got the exactly same colour paints ? Thanks for sharing!!
Love you're work. I was a graffiti artist first before I started painting with brush/acrylics so it's great to see you using molotow products. Only issue in my opinion using there inks rather then spray paint or normal acrylic paint for a mural is the price. Otherwise great :)
Thanks! +Mus Latif Yep, I totally agree with you on the price - in the case of this mural I had to demonstrate the products, but to keep the price down I mix the inks with white acrylic house paint.
This is Very helpful , Im possibly going to do my first mural never done one before so I could use all the hints I could take thank you. Now for how much to charge YIKES! Tks again
Hey! Late reply - hope it went well! If you need more mural tips, I actually have a free online mini-course all about painting murals, you can sign up to get it on my website (scroll down the page to the red section): www.fieldey.com/
QUE DURA ERES TREMENDO ARTE EL TUYO
great video stunning painting
any tips for beginning with street art?
great video, do you have any pointers on simplifying an image? I tend to get bogged down in the details of photo realism. used to do water colors in photo realism, about 15 years ago. I love your painting style. I've been teaching myself digital 3D cause I like the low poly minimalist style but I always get bogged down in the details. Your channel is fun to watch.
how can you be SOO GOOD??
Lots of practice ;)
I would like a video on how you create your reference using photoshop? I thought I caught you saying something like that in a video of yours. Thanks for all the knowledge you share Fieldey!
Hi Spencer, I’ll put it on the list - thanks for the comment!
That's great.
But plz tell how did u sketch at wall
Can you do a video on how to blend and what brushes to use for painting?
Loved this mural you painted! I'm actually working on a mural on large canvas 4ft x 5ft for the first time . I'm painting a white silhouette on a black background of specific celebrities and I want to know if I should use the same tips you gave in this tutorial for the faces ?
+Ramon Garcia Thanks dude! Yep, for sure - just work from the background to the foreground and you should be sweet. Good luck!
This was really great to see how you did this mural. I'm considering using these Molotow ONE4ALL inks for some murals but I'm wondering how much coverage you get from those bottles? The murals we are doing will total over 1000 sqft.
+Mike Stanton I'm not sure of the total coverage - you'd best contact them if you want that info. I reckon you'd be better using sprays for the murals if you can, or do what I do and mix the inks with house paint to extend them out a bit.
Cool Great Job I'm painting my first mexican restaurant will be painting murals inside and outside will acrylic work for both and would walmart carry any decent paints for this job and can I use.a gloss varnish on acrylic to protect it
Hi mate, sorry for the late reply, I'm assuming you've already done the job and it came out awesome! For anyone else in the same boat, I'd recommend using exterior house paint - that's the best bet.
Wow!!! This mural is so awesome! I love it. Thx for the tips too! I'm just curious how you got the outline in such great proportion. Did you use a grid? Thank you!
I used a projector on this wall :)
I see that you already had a light colored background color on. If we're painting a dark background color is it best to just paint it at the end, around the subjects? Or just lay down the dark background and paint the subjects over it?
Hey, cool work! What did you use to outline the faces?
Great
cool
Hi Fieldey, love the video. Are you able to explain the difference between the Molotov One4All inks and standard acrylic paint. I'm new to mural painting and I want to make the right choice of materials before my first attempt! Thanks.
Also, forgot to ask, are you able to recommend a projector that's suitable to project clearly on exterior walls?
Wonderful job! Why do you prefer inks over acrylics?
Wow amazing work, thanks for sharing. Can you please tell me approx how long this took you. Thanks so much.
I think this took about 5 days?
Hello, that's bloody amazing artwork. I'm just wondering, what did you use to draw the outlines on the wall, looks like a green pastel or something? can you give some tips with that please, like what detail to include and leave out.
Thank you! I just used a paint marker to draw the outlines up 😊 For tips on what to include or leave out, it really depends on what you’re painting really, for a mural remember that bigger is better and there’s no point having too much tiny details - they’re designed to be seen from a distance.
I love you're mural. What is the best way of getting the outline drawn on the wall do u use a projector ? If yes what type, cheers
Russell Duggan Yep - I use a digital projector so I can get it on right in the fastest time possible. The old school overhead projectors are also good.
