I always wondered why you always had gum when sawing, this makes more sense. Whenever I do delicate or intricate work, my eyebrows come down and/or I grind my teeth/clench my jaw, making me look furious. Because people have asked me why I'm so angry when doing stuff, I am just focusing :)
I actually heard of this in highschool. Our teacher showed us a couple studies; one that showed how the neuropathways became more active during mastication, and another that showed the smell of peppermint did something similar. Then before every test, he gave us peppermint gum to wish us luck.
I genuinely thought this was going to be like Roy Underhill's "The secret to making sure everything you do in woodworking goes right is" *BANG BANG BANG BANG* as he starts pounding out a mortise or whatever. "And you make sure that you always" *BANG BANG BANG BANG* Although tbh I'd rather learn how he makes his saws sing
A tongue-biter I see. I'm more of a bottom lip-tongue combo biter afficionado myself. I play the bassguitar and I used to not be able to play without this and some other more awkward looking grimaces. A tutor teaching me some Alexander techniques to minimize these grimaces fixed the worst of it, as it got to a point where it distracted me more than it helped me focus, plus it hampered my ability to express myself on stage. With woodworking it's much less severe and it feels actually helpful to my concentration. Just let the face do what it wants to do :P
My wife does something similar …she sticks her tongue out of one corner in her mouth, and flicks it side to side…. But!! once I see that tongue out I know what ever she’s trying to fix or whatever will never work or be the same again ,, me ! I just talk to myself whenever I’m doing something with wood ,well pretty much what ever I’m doing, it’s like I’m coaching myself. And it works.

I work remotely, and talk to myself when thinking (coding), and always a bit worried when going in the office and forget that I can't talk there loudly to myself 😂
@ 😂😂😂😂 I honestly wouldn’t let that worry me at all,, I’ve worked on many large building sites and many of the blokes often are talking to themselves when marking out or trying to get in there heads the project they’re doing,, I think it’s a mentally healthy thing to do.
It's like drummers making weird mouth gestures when they're playing. It looks like they're saying pop pop pow mmm pop pop pow all the time. Next live concert footage you see, pay attention to the drummer's mouth
I very slightly stick my tongue out and only pressure down with my lips. I realized I did it as a kid but never really thought about it again until my wife brought it up years ago. Now she tells my kids, "Leave dad alone he's concentrating. See his tongue?"
So that won't work for me, I have ADD so in order for me to focus, I have to drown out all exterior sound. I do so by putting my Jbuds in and listen to music. Either rock from the 60's to 80's, swing or dixieland jazz.
Brother I need the links for your top 3 dad joke shirts, specifically the periodic table one, my moms birthday is coming up and she was a math and science teacher for like 15 years
I have noticed you doing this many times. I have always chosen not to bring it up. Makes me wonder what you would do shooting a few thousand rivets in a wing as I have!
Oh I've done that. Used to do quite a bit with our local EAA back when I was building a cozy. Of course I was a crazy one working with epoxy rather than rivets
You know, we all have habits like this 😂.
Nice saw😊
Since I'm not sure if you're being serious, I'll just consider it a tongue-in-cheek comment.
well grandpa always asked if I was holding my tongue right

So I stick my out when focusing. I didn’t even realize it until my coworkers painted it out.
Damn, they caught you in water color 4k?
I stick my tongue out slightly subconsciously whenever I’m really concentrating
My father was definitely an old school member of this focus method.
Oh wow!!! This is the skill I was missing! It looks quite difficult, but I’ve to give it a try
It explains so much.

A farmer I worked with many years back used to chew his tongue all day while working, how he still has it now amazes me 😂
I'm Hector Salamanca when sharpening chisels.
Ever seen a picture of Michael Jordan playing basketball? I think all of us tongue chewers/sticker outers are in good company.
My mother and the father of one of my friends would do this; it apparently increases focus.
I always stick mine out or bite it and everyone makes fun of me… now I’m the only licensed carpenter in the group 😂
The council would like to speak with you
You are a piece of work really enjoy this channel

I have what I call my "dumb face" when I'm hyper-focusing. Once, I knew I was, but still couldn't stop it. I was making a pb&j🤦🏻♂️😅
Ok, this is a great reference. Truly,
I would probably end up just biting my tongue 😮.
I'm a mutterer, just yabbering away with a partly complete monologue that makes me sound untterly insane but greatly adds to my mental accumen.
Hey, thought I was the only tough chewers left...lol...concentration!😅
Me too!!!!🤣🤣🤣 Had no idea anybody else does it!!!
that's dope! I was 2+ hours long of true crime reactions and it makes me focus, relax and calm down the voices in my head! :D
Chewing or sticking it out is a higher form of concentration/focus. Normal but not common. Kids do it all the time.
YES! Totally.
I stick my tongue out when I’m focusing on something. It’ll wag around my lips too 😂
Bitting the tongue is essential to fine craftsmanship 😅!

My wife will shout down stairs asking who I'm talking too.... me I'm talking to me!
My tongue presses my bottom lip out.
My missis just rolls her eyes and says i look like a spack.
This and the next newest video have me going "do I smell AuDHD?"
Said the neurodivergence in the corner...
Now it’s not woodworking, but when I’m playing drums I’ve noticed (from recording myself) that I make the dumbest face ever when I’m really focusing
😂😂😂😂 so true o wise Rabbi!
I bite my bottom lip whenever I do anything that requires focus, tried stopping it cuz I felt I look stupid but ultimately I decided to embrace it😅

Hearing this, I'm now surprised your favorite finish is BLO -- I'd think you'd prefer tung oil.
Oh and here I thought it was "buy a festool" that's usually the advice I see.
When MJ had his tongue out, everyone knew that something magical was about to happen on the court🏀

Most are gifts. I am not sure where they come from.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo durn. Thanks anyway!
You know that's a sign of old age...just wait till you get in your 70's...they'll be selling tickets to watch you work...😊
It's actually funny how they say" you can't do two things at once" is actually false! I also have a tick when I am also concentrating or focused!
😆 different people have different focus habits. Some may scrunch their face rather than chew their tongues or push it into their cheek or teeth
i hold my breath.
Sounds like adhd if you're being for real
I noticed you chewing on your tung when you were using my draw knife😅
Same! It's one of those things people on the various neurodivergent spectra do that our spouses like to chuckle about.
According to my Wife I hold my bottom lip between my teeth when I am concentrating..
Same
Left side of right side?
I do stuff like this too
Wow I thought you were really into dip this whole time
In my cheek I have a spot that I must have been chewing for years.
Instrumentalists suffer from this frequently as well
Not only are you a woodworker, you are a drummer! Watch the faces of drummers sometime and you will see what I am talking about.
I thought i am the only one doing that 😂
I have noticed you doing this many times. I have always chosen not to bring it up. Makes me wonder what you would do shooting a few thousand rivets in a wing as I have!

You can wiggle your toes also it does the same thing.
Like patting your head and rubbing your belly same time that is😂😂😂
Toe wiggling is my medical injections and blood testing distraction tactic.
I have many times watches that you have gum, but now we know the truth
Try chewing gum instead of your tongue lmao 🤣
Thats a bit tung and cheek.
It’s fine as long as you don’t swallow James ;)
I have heard of tongue in cheek😂
Thought you were chewing gum the whole time 😮
I also chew my tongue. Or stick my lower jaw out when I am deeply focused
😂 Truth!
I have to lick my lips
FINE!!!!! I'll try gently chewing your tongue.
The things I do for dovetails.............
😂
😂
But, can you walk and talk and chew your tongue at the same time?
I stick my tongue out, and saw and metal dust not something nice to have on your tongue, so now I where masks
You should read up a bit on macroglossia, cause it's a pain, and chewing on your tongue can lead to it.
Try gum instead, brother.
When did Bill Burr start wood working ?
