I’ve been following the Catskill railroad saga for a number of years now. I sincerely hope they can restore and extend their tracks to the Woodstock Dike Trailhead at West Hurley, MP 10.4, to connect with the ART and provide weekend or even daily train rides in summer between there and Kingston Plaza to give trail users an option to take the train up, ride the ART, then train back to Kingston. It would seem like a huge win-win for both rail and trail, maybe even more so the trail, as it would ease vehicle congestion on Highway 28 and parking at the Woodstock Dike which can get pretty full on a summer weekend. Right now CMRR’s latest proposal is restoring the remaining track to Basin Road at MP 10 on the edge of the Ashokan Reservoir and develop a permanent station there, which makes me think Ulster County/NYCDEP put the final nail in the coffin of CMRR’s previous plan of getting to the ART and more importantly for them the Glenford Dike which would have provided a scenic destination for their trains. Hopefully that’s not the case and CMRR is still pursuing getting to at least West Hurley and the ART trailhead, and making the case it would be a win-win for both them and the ART.
The railroad was forced out of its yard and downtown Kingston trackage, as well as the middle segment which connected their two operations that was being restored. The county wanted both for rail trails... They also lost their lease on the upper segment which wasn't pulled up, which is now operated by Rail Explorers for railbikes. The remaining section came close to closing, but has managed to hold on.
Great video but a darn shame that local politics prevented this line from completion Kingston to Phoenicia. A lot of volunteers put a lot of days and hours into refurbishing this line, all for naught.
Absolutely agree. I was aware of what had happened, but found out more of the gritty details while chatting with some volunteers at the NY State Railroad Museum in Phonecia. Shameful actions by the state and county...

Just rebuild the whole line… that trail was a waste of money and economic growth
Agreed!
I took it once
How much of the line is still operational? I've heard about the dumb politics that immensely affected them, made me feel sad
