Godox AD100 Pro Review | A SODA-Sized Off Camera Flash

  • In Godox AD100 Pro Review, I take a look at a soda-sized off camera flash and dive deep into all of it's specs. This new off camera flash from Godox is turning some heads for it's extreme portability, as it's the smallest off camera flash Godox offers. It has complete connectivity with the entire Godox X series and will work with light's like the AD200, AD400 Pro, AD600 Pro, and V1 speedlight. I think this light can be great for anyone looking to have a minimal kit paired with small magnetic modifiers, such as wedding photographers, or possibly as accent lights for headshot and portrait photographers.

    Serious question for those who choose to give the video a thumbs down. Is it because:
    A) you dislike the existence of the AD100 Pro
    B) you are dissatisfied with the testing/opinions represented in this video?
    I ask, not because I’m upset to see it, but because I’m open to improving my videos. I understand that my videos on flash are highly technical, and often times people don’t care or don’t understand what these figures mean. One thing I’m trying to implement in my videos, is whenever I do a data dump, I’m trying to also explain what that information means in practical and non-technical terms. I thought I did that well in this video. I’d be thrilled with feedback if you disagree.
    If it’s A), then I politely request that you not use my video as a representation of your emotions towards a product. After all, my video presents a rational breakdown that can not only help people choose to buy this flash, but equally help people NOT choose to buy this flash.
    And if it’s
    C) you just hate my face any everything that comes out of it,
    that’s cool.

      😁It could ONLY be that they don't like the AD100 - who dislikes comprehensive, unbiased, free information on the products of a company that innovates at a rapid (monthly😂) rate?

      I love to have and use the AD100. It's a perfect 2nd light to my AD300. I need a 2 light set up sometimes and/or a small hand held OCF light sometimes. The only thing is that it should be $100 less or even $50 and would be an immediate buy.

      I suspect those dislikes are the irrelevant outliers that exists within any rating system. Like with Amazon reviews where a poor rating is based on a person's poor customer experience with the vendor, or the product they received was a bad copy and they did not give the vendor the opportunity to correct the discrepancy, or they did not fully understand the product and are upset because of their own lack of research and found that it does not do what they wanted it to do. Many reasons that have noting to do with the actual product. You might not be even getting down votes based on the presentation or content of your videos... In the case of your thumbs downs I think people might just be upset for many irrelevant reasons. They might vote a thumbs down because they don't like the actual product, they might dislike it because they just purchased a similar product that they feel is better, or they are generally just bitter and negative people in general. I've been watching your content since my first AD360 from way back and have seen your content grow and improve. Your production value and testing methods are top notch keep doing you bro...the community appreciates what you do!

      Your reviews are amazing and you are my go to resource for photography product information. I would not own Godox products, or know how to use them, without you. You are fun, informative, and professional. Between fake accounts and internet annonymity fueled undiscerning haters I doubt there are any true viewers who "disliked" your video on any reasonable merits. Your inquiry to understand the dislikes just confirms the quality content and honest purpose of your channel. Unfortunately, I doubt anyone with a trigger finger for dislikes paused to read your comment or goes back to videos to explain their actions. For the rest of us, please continue your high quality and informative videos. Thanks for all your hard work

      I think you make a very good case for the ad100, it is the price that I have a issue with, especially I already own couple ad200. But still thumbs up for me because you did a great reviewing the light with facts. If you come out like some other like you should get one because I think is great, that will be a auto thumbs down lol

    Size and weight are king when you shoot solo or with a single assistant. Once you get past your key and fill lighting the rest is accent. I think these are the perfect tool for such a thing. The fact that you can toss 2-3 into a lunchbox sized bag is brilliant. Pair them with a manfrotto nano stand and you're looking at under 5lbs per set-up.

    Rob, you are the go-to guy for me for all flash/strobe related information. I now own several Flashpoint products from the 100 through the SD600 and everything in between. Your videos are the sole reason and I am in your debt. You are the FIRST content provider I have ever seen who had the professional courage to ask for critical feedback. That speaks volumes for your professional integrity and curiosity and shows an incredible drive for self improvement. You’ve put yourself in a class by yourself. By the way, I find the AS100 Pro to be very useful in real estate and architectural photography. I plan to bring one AD100 one V1t with me on an upcoming Alaska cruise. I would prefer to bring two AD100 units but they don’t give me an option to mount on the hotshoe. I am curious why you didn’t see Travel as a major reason for buying the 100?

    Thank you very much for this video. I debated getting the AD200s back during Black Friday, but just couldn't bring myself to ordering another totally new battery and light...I am a happy V1 owner and this appears to be the right move for me. AD100s for off camera accent light and potentially a compact bare bulb key.

    Great review, just received my AD100pro, and ordered a second immediately, the form factor cannot be ignored,
    In my opinion the 100 is an additional flash not a stand alone flash, the 300 with the godox mount adapters and the 100 with the A1 accessory are a perfect match,
    It sure where the 200 will fit into my kit now, since I got 2 x 300 my 200’s only ever had the round heads, now the 100’s will cover this
    Great informative vid,

    I've got one on preorder and am just patiently waiting for now. I use the V1's a lot for product work so i have invested in the mag attachments that go on the front (tons of gels, extra grids etc.). There are times where i have enough crap stacked on the front that the V1 lacks the power i need, but just barely. Hoping this has just that extra punch to fill the void. Appreciate the work you put into these vids, it helps a ton. Cheers.

    Another great and unbiased review. It is quite difficult to see a clear use over other Godox flashes. The AD200 is such a workhorse (combined with the AD-B2 and it becomes an incredibly versatile monster). The V1 is still so useful because it can be a master on camera with the ability of having it firing or not.
    I think the AD100 may offer something that a few might find they need, but I feel for the majority of people the existing options are still more versatile.

    • @robhallphoto

      That’s my feeling too. And that’s absolutely fine, yet another niche product that will serve a small part of the industry better.
      I try my best to consider the different preferences of photographers in all sorts of fields. But I’m always surprised by people’s methods, or specific work, that warrant preference of a piece of gear in a way I never imagined.

    I'm crossing my fingers that this is a perfect fit, though I'd really love to see it in the field once you've had that chance. I typically am transporting my kit to rented studios on a regular basis, and I'm really hoping this light can be my "backpack" lighting kit when I don't want to bring a full cart full of MS300s and accessories.

      @@robhallphoto I think you already did a great job! From a tech perspective it's pretty clear.
      At this point I'm mainly curious to see it in action outside of a test bench. Handling, rigging, actual photoshoot results. Seeing it perform in various environments, recommended and not recommended would be huge.
      I'm eyeing it up as a between stage for when speedlights aren't feasible, but big wall-powered strobes aren't either. But it's still tough to make the argument for this when the AD200s exist and with more versatility.

    I do see a potential for this light in a future kit for me. I think 2 of them for sportraits where I am cutting out the subject, I could use these as either hair lights or background lights. As you stated, being more compact and useful with the snoot is nice and is something that I would consider.
    Thanks for putting these video's out and doing the "leg work" for the rest of us.

    • @paristo
      @paristo 9 месяцев назад

      For the hair light or fill light, instead AD100 paired with AD200's as main lights, I opted to T350 lights. They are smaller than AD100, and yet provide enough power to overcome a sun in many cases, and you can connect them directly to camera if needed for reportage style shooting or replace the trigger as master flash in emergency.
      The T350 is so easy to tug somewhere hidden, make temporary attachments etc.
      AD100 costs 290€
      T350 costs 90 €
      Really, prices ain't problem as one shoot session and you can buy either two flashes you want for 2-3 units.
      The AD100 is great addition, but flashhead makes it unsuitable for my needs, where AD200 shines.
      It is great we have options...

    I'd love to have 2-3 of these for reception lighting because they'd be so much easier to pack than the AD200's or even 2-3 speed lights. But....at $300 a pop, I'd have to weigh those benefits vs. the cost. After all is said and done though, they appear to be a sweet little strobe in a soda pop/can package! Came here to learn about the AD100 Pro, but I got interested in your lighting bag as well. Too bad it's sold out right now.
    I'm glad the battery is interchangeable between the AD100 Pro and the V1. You covered most of my questions about the AD100 Pro and there's only one more thing I wanted to see.
    I was curious if it could ever be compatible with the AD300 mounting system. I own the V1 as well as round heads for my AD200 units but I don't own the AD300 and would have loved to see the size comparison (showing the front of the AD100 Pro and the AD300 side by side) to see if it's even possible to use an AD300-size (I forget what it's called but it's not the Bowens mount) modifier with the AD100. At first I didn't like the thought of a non-Bowens mount on the AD300 but I'm thinking the small size might be a good thing and I may eventually pick up and AD300.
    Other than not seeing the front of the AD100 Pro and AD300 side by side I felt like your review covered everything I would look for if I could go to the store and put all of these units side by side and try them (and even beyond that with the specs you provided). I love how thorough your videos are and I can't understand why this one got 20 downvotes. Maybe some people just don't understand how to keep scrolling when they're not interested in something, but I love your videos so please keep them coming!

    Hi Robert, thanks for the great review! Did you test the capability of the ad100 to fill out a larger softbox/umbrella? A barebulb sure is best for that, but does the zoom of the ad100 (when set to 28mm) help to fill - let's say, a 120cm octa? Kind regards, Peter

    Like you said, it would be great for accent lighting. I would love to have one because of it's size, but having two ad200s, a V1 and an AD600, they all serve their purpose very well. Just not sure if I would get a lot of use out of this. Thanks for the review! I would be interested in seeing you use it in a studio session - possibly a one light portrait using the ad100 pro in some type of modifier.

      Honestly that's probably what most of the vitriol is. A ton of us are 2, 3, 4 years deep with this gear and have been satisfied for a while. So unless a product fundamentally improves our processes, we say "what's the point?". The light not only has to be worth it's price, it has to be worth it's price over what we are already using.

      I pretty much have the same set up as you Clark. Except I have the 860ii instead of the v1. My ad200’s work amazing outside with my ad600bm. I have been investing into some Rotolights and have 2 neo 2’s and a Aeos which have turned my indoor photography and low light outside photography into a breeze to get some amazing photos. I use the Rotolights led lights mixed in with my Godox strobes and sometimes using flash on both the Rotolights and Godox And I have yet to come a crossed a situation that I haven’t had enough light.

  • @bifcake

    This is a very good breakdown of what this flash is and what it's not. You've covered pretty much everything and you've been very measured and methodical. I can't see any legitimate reason why anyone would give the video a thumbs down. You're not pushing a product, you're just telling people what it is and what it does.
    I think it's a great little light, but not for $300. This would be ok for $100 and then you could get 3 of them to use as accent lights. As it stands, it just isn't versatile and exciting enough to be worth the money. I feel the same way about the AD300. However, the video itself is great! Keep up the good work.

    I've been using a yongnuo 600 ex rt II series of flashes, predominantly on camera as a wedding photographer with rare occasional usage off camera. I like using speedlights off camera because if my main light would ever go down, I can swap one out and be fine. I've been considering a switch to Godox and the V1 line for a while with some ad200, maybe the pros, for off-camera lighting. I just rarely use off-camera lighting and again the hesitation of not having a speedlight to easily swap out. The price on the ad100pro is confusing but understandable and the versatility of being able to *basically* use the same batteries across all my lights would be nice but I'm still torn towards staying V1, were I to switch, for that built-in redundancy. That's kind of the beauty of innovation and competition these days, there's no shortage of good options. I also love the compact size of the ad100pros, I could basically just bring all my lights and cameras in one bag and a small bag for a couple off-camera stands and umbrellas.

No hot shoe connection or lock. Less zoom. No commander controls, and a less dense display. There's all the V1 on-camera applications on camera and I'm not sure the slight power jump warrants the expense over all that missing versatility.

      True, but there’s a limitation to that when it comes to soft modifiers and bright outdoor conditions (as is so common of a workflow these days). The AD200 + barebulb is to me, that line. In HSS, I find it’s too close to flexibly work around outdoors, which is why I recommend either a)using ND with ad200 to increase its flexibility or b)using a bigger flash outdoors.

      Curious, as I’m trying to understand the niche’s that prioritize color stability better.
      The 400 /600 pro are +- 50k whereas the AD200 Pro is +- 100k, but regardless, both strobes are identical in that they don’t drift more than a couple kelvin (within the margin of error of a colorimeter) when used at a consistent power setting. This is true of the non-pro lights as well.
      I understand industries that prioritize color stability (I myself have photographed a sample leather catalog where color was critical) such as ecommerce, catalog, medical. But, in none of those industries do I expect that users are dramatically changing the output photo-to-photo. So, if the strobes don’t change temp when fired at a consistent output, what application is there that requires such stringent color stability and large frequent shifts in power output? Or is it just so a rim light has the same color temp as a key light despite both being at dramatically different power levels?
      And if that is so important, what are people doing about modifiers? considering one light in a double diffused softbox is probably 400k less than the same light in a reflector, or gridded.

If I fully switched to the 100's, I could fit 3 AD100's, and 2 V860's... All in the same bag I keep my camera and 5 lenses!

    Another consideration, I use my AD200 with the round head attached to the extension lead 95% of the time, this is because I feel the AD200 is too heavy, the extension keeps the weight lower down on the light stand, the 100 is the same size of the round head and top half of the extension, yes it’s a bit heavier but you don’t have that feeling it will topple over, this is a huge advantage for the AD100,

      @@robhallphoto CRI values, Ra to be specific is quite irrelevant to todays need -- this was designed as an observer for rating fluorescent lamps for kind of limited gamut -- this is only averaging R1 to R8... so you can still get very high Ra score yet colour rendition could be marginally worse compared to natural light or tungsten bulb... for relevant informations, you want to evaluate extended values (R9-15) too - R12 is often a bit problematic with cheaper LEDs... and then SSI -- this is probably much more relevant for wide gamut digital sensors we have today ... would you mind doing a quick readout and sharing these? Full R1-R15 readings, SSI and colour spectrum?

  • @richardhopkins3214
    @richardhopkins3214 3 года назад +1

    Technical point Rob, on max x-sync speed and flash durations, which makes the AD100Pro's short flash duration at full power all the more welcome. At 4:40 you say a flash duration around 1/250sec "maximises the output at 1/250sec" shutter speed. While that might appear to make perfect sense, in fact it does not and actually reduces effective flash brightness. At max x-sync of say 1/250sec, the shutter is only fully open for about half that time because the shutter blinds must first travel from top to bottom to uncover the sensor. Cameras vary of course but 1/250sec shutter travel time is not a bad rule of thumb and it makes the maths easier, ie the window in which the flash has to dump its entire output is only 1/500sec or so. When the flash duration is longer than that, most of the peak brightness is still captured, but the fading tail gets chopped off and lost. The result is reduced overall brightness, and also slight darkening around the bottom of the frame (or sometimes the top, depending on which direction the shutter travels). With a strobe at full power you've probably noticed how dropping the shutter speed from 1/250sec to 1/125sec increases flash brightness slightly? Maybe you thought nothing of it, but it's there - hence camera manufacturers (eg Canon) recommend shutter speeds right down to 1/60sec for some studio strobes.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 года назад

      Super interesting Richard, I genuinely had 0 idea about this. So if I’m understanding correctly, that means the 1/447 t.1 flash duration in practical terms would actually provide almost all of its output (at 1/250s), while an AD200 at 1/220 actually loses a touch, closing the gap even more? And this would not be represented on a light meter, but would show up in an image. Is that right?
      Thanks for the information!

    • @richardhopkins3214
      @richardhopkins3214 3 года назад

      As a post-script to this, a shorter than average flash duration of 1/447sec at t.1 also means that the AD100Pro will be useless for Hyper-Sync (aka Hi-Sync, Super-Sync, Overdrive-Sync etc). And along the same lines, with rumours of a global all-electronic shutter appearing in the anticipated Canon R1 sometime soon - which would banish x-sync limits completely - it's no good being able to sync at 1/8000sec shutter speed if the flash duration is a tardy 1/250sec - it'll simply miss 90% of the light output.

    I like the round flash head to use it with the snoot (V1 in my case)- going into the back of my 150-600 lens, to focus the light for creating extra small spotlights. I am not sure if ,when the light is focused that way, that little extra power would serve me. Some sort of patterns useable with the AK-R1 Kit could be a nice addition. hmm when i think about it - cutting some out of paper and put it in between the gel holders should do the trick
    Still if i would not have the V1´s those 100s would be pretty interesting.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 года назад

      Using a snoot won’t “project” the light, it reduces the area of coverage by “flagging” the light, or blocking where it can go. Projecting/concentrating requires a lens, either a fresnel lens (like the lens of the flash itself, or the magmod magbeam if you want to kick it up a notch) or a modifier designed to gather light from a wider area and concentrate it forward (like the retro laser modifier discontinued by Paul C Buff). So while your snoot may limit the coverage, it’s only eating away at output (on the edges) by flagging it. So if you want max output, make sure to first maximize the zoom of the V1. This will ensure all the light is packed into the tightest area. Removing the snoot might give you a tiny boost, but not much since you’re shooting such a distant area.

    Hi Robert, I already have a Godox V1F and controller for my XT4, my question is if I purchase an AD100 do I need to buy an AD100F or does this matter? Cheers

      There’s no such thing as an AD100F.
      Anything X series without a hotshoe is not brand specific.

    So let me get this straight, if someone wants to buy a small Godox flash with a round head design and you don't care about bare bulb, this outputs the most light of them all? Even more than the 200 Pro with the round head? How would the power of this compare to the power of the AD200/Pro with the Fresnel head if bouncing off the ceiling?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 года назад

      I didn't test bouncing the 100 pro vs. 200 fresnel. I feel like bouncing in general just increases differences in spread of light and only reduces the accuracy of a comparison. But also, no, I never said this outputs the most light of them all. The 100 pro beat the 200 round head, and V1 when used direct, but the fresnel head of the ad200 greatly outperformed the AD100 pro (because it's got gnarly hotspots). And in a softbox, the H200R head and barebulb both outperformed the 100 pro. I'd revisit the output section.

    Does the model light lag to come back up to the level set after you fire like with the V1?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 года назад +1

      The modeling light has 10 brightness values like the V1 but it does not dim during a flash recycle.

      @michaelscoots 3 года назад

      @@robhallphoto Oh sweet! Thank you, Rob! I use the V1 off camera on a monopod which my assistant/2nd shooter holds during receptions. When it gets dark, I like to use the modeling light at half power or so - it helps me lock focus or track. But it’s annoying to watch it slowly come back up and I don’t use it when there is a videographer (would be annoying for them plus they usually have a light).

      @@michaelscoots awesome, I was expecting you asked because not having it might be a dealbreaker, as a lot of people like the feature as it silently represents the light has fully recycled.

      @@robhallphoto yeah not an issue as it’s for reception use only where I’m only pushing it to 1/32 Max usually.

      @@gosman949 indeed. Honestly, having seen the results, and knowing how I use my lights, I'm considering dumping the 200's in favor of two 100's, getting rid of all the extra heads that I carry, and swapping out two stands for carbon fiber nano stands. This would reduce my bag weight by about 9 lbs (but costs about $900). Cheaper than back surgery though.
