  • The Godox AD100 Pro (Flashpoint XPLOR 100) is a very interesting pocket strobe from the company that has been pushing the boundaries of battery powered, off-camera flash units with offerings like the AD200, AD200 Pro, and the AD300 Pro. There is no question that having a strobe this small would be a great addition to any photographer's bag, but is 100 watt seconds powerful enough for practical uses by a professional photographer? In this video, I am not going to XPLOR (see what I did there?) the specs, but instead I am going to give the AD100 Pro a real world test under tough conditions and see how it does.

    Thanks Gary, the main benefit of the ad100 for me would be to use it as a unit to light my backdrop. Because the light of the round head has a nice fall-off, it is easy to attach to a light stand (no s-Bracket needed). The V1 needs to go into an s-bracket or on a fiddly hot/cold shoe. And the ad100 can be zoomed (unlike the hr200), so I can adjust the light vignette on the backdrop easily. Cheers, Peter

    Thank you for the content and review. I always enjoy your videos.
    Something I think that’s kinda interesting about the reviews of this light is that people are acting like we haven’t used speed lights outdoors for many years and this is more powerful than a speed light…
    To me, this light has a specific use that is not covered by the other Godox lights. The form factor is the benefit. Perfect for a couple of things in my book: wedding off camera lighting with a magnetic grid on them and then used for couple’s portraits with the Angler speed box that also has a magnetic attachment. Speed and simplicity are huge at a wedding and not having to mess with adaptors and external battery packs is a real time saver.

      I really do love the light and use it almost every day as a background light. The main issue is that it has a slightly green color cast to it that you have to compensate for or live with. Otherwise it's brilliant, love the accessories.

    Have AD200s and V1's already. This 100 is a great light, but as Gary said they should charge less for it.it's a pricey option when you compare it to the v1s and especially the AD200s which are far more flexible with more output. They do take less space, so for a backup or kicker light maybe. R2 has a lot more interesting cost-effective options in their universe.

      No I didn't do a technical review on it, but those specs should be easy to find on Adorama or in a Godox YT video. Like if you were to have a 3 light set up where the back ground light can also be strong enough to make the background pure white? I haven't noticed it at all showing up in my work, but that may be down to how I use it. I am aware that the color is slightly different than the AD200, but I mostly use it as a background light in the studio rather than a main light on the subject. The main thing this light is missing is compatibility with the Godox mount, like the AD300. If it had that mount, it would be incredible to use in the 24, 26, and 34" ultra slim softboxes for an incredibly lightweight and elegant solution. The S2 bracket is just big and heavy, and I dislike using them on location, and it also requires the use of the larger Bowens mount modifiers which defeats the point of using a micro sized strobe like this. It's good otherwise, but represents a missed opportunity.

    The AD-200 has no zoom function, the AD-100 has, which makes it, when compared to the AD-200 with the round head, _more_ powerful under certain circumstances, the real selling point for the AD-200 is, from my point of view, its much higher versatility because of the bare bulb, which is extremely useful. With the 200 I can run such low power levels that recycle times don't even cross my mind. Plus I've already got a bunch of 200 specific modifiers that won't work with it and I try to stay away from Bowens/S bracket setups as much as I can since I'm on location most of the time and they just don't pack as easy.

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  3 года назад +2

      Totally. The advantage of the v1 is that you can use it as a controller in a pinch. And for wedding and event shooters, having an on-camera flash is pretty much a given, so I don't see one as a replacement for the other. As far as using it off-camera, the AD100 is a lot more stable to mount on a stand than the hot shoe (unless you are using a bracket). I am hoping that they will drop the price on this unit because I think that is pretty much the only complaint that anyone has. Thanks for watching!

    For me the AD100 sits at the top of the speedlite range (yes I know it's not a speedlite, but hear me out) it's got a nice lunch of power for easy flexible quick use for ocf, the AD200 sits at the bottom of the 'studio strobe' range, it's got significantly more punch, and is more flexible to use in a "studio" setup. BUT a 200 with a couple of 100s makes a blinding portable setup, I've used that combination for any number of weddings and family portraits, like any job you need to use the right tool for it, and imo boy did godox hit the almost (price) perfect tool for that particular job! If the price was 30% lower, it would be the perfect tool.

    i thought i would never say this about chinese lighting....but based on what you used to compare it to, it's definitely overpriced for what it does. the small cuteness factor doesn't offset that and the AD200 is NOT a large heavy cumbersome speedlight.....for my taste :-) i think it should have been compared head to head with the V1 and that would have been a more useful video....for me :-)

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  3 года назад

      I see your point, but the V1 is an on -camera flash, a different class of light altogether. They can’t fill the same needs and they aren’t meant to. In a head-to-head in power, the V1 loses every time, but not by much. But it is a perfect companion to the 100 and 200 as it can also be used to to control the other lights. I definitely think the price is $50 too high, but I expect a robust used market for them after a while and a few sales come the holidays, great alway to pick one up. Just a final thought about the price: I have paid $500 for a speed light with half the power of a 100 and 2/3 the power of the V1. On its own the AD100 is a terrific value, it’s just a niche product and time will tell if it will find a place in the market and stay relevant :) thanks for watching!

    My problem with this is almost nobody wants to go outdoors and shoot f/16 so you need to show how it would fare shooting at wide apertures like 1.2, 1.4, 2 and 2.8, since that's the trend and what most people want to know.

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  3 года назад

      That’s an interesting idea, but that doesn’t demonstrate the power of the light against full sun. Now the effect would have been the same with a 6 or 8 stop ND filter and you get your wide open lens right there :) Using the flash at its extreme limit demonstrates that it could function well below those limits too, right? Thanks for watching

    • @jasonbodden8816
      @jasonbodden8816 3 года назад

      @@GaryHughesOfficial Well, of course, but things change when you use larger double diffused modifiers and all that. Don’t get me wrong, this has its place but it will definitely struggle for certain things. Like HSS. Or if you happen to leave your ND filter home you have little hope of managing bright sunlight unless you stop down to small apertures. I prefer the peace of mind of more power regardless. But the AD100 can definitely work for a lot of people whose needs aren’t too intense. It’ll be good to have but for me hardly as a main light outdoors in full sun. I’d more use this in less intense conditions like closer to sunset or night time, or indoors, or in the shade. Ridiculous price point, though, when the AD200Pro is a few dollars more.

I dont see any Euro youtubers gearing videos towards the US when they’re reviewing EU based gear lol Your attempt to feel excluded is due to flawed logic.
