Reminds me of the old joke, "Why is Denis Leary a rich & successful movie star and Bill Hicks a relatively obscure cult comedian? Because there is No Cure For Cancer." LOL
It's debatable. The jokes themselves are technically different (and not as clever,) but it's more a matter of him having adopted Bill's whole style and covered all the same subject matter.
No, He talked about smoking in a different manner than Hicks. Hicks persona was laconic and laid back and Leary's was manic. The only joke overlap was the comment about Jim Fixx but that was an observation about Jim Fixx dying while jogging made by about 50% of the American population.

He didn’t directly steal jokes verbatim per se - but he did rip off Bill Hicks’ routine of being pro drug, pro smoking, pro swearing, and being very anti establishment and anti government - along with developing many of Hicks’ cadences and mannerisms - some of Hicks concepts were taken but it wasn’t word for word copying what Hicks said - but if you watch a handful of Bill Hicks’ stand ups, and then watch Leary’s “No Cure For Cancer” you will be quite blown away and think to yourself “Yeah, yeah he totally ripped off Hicks….” That doesn’t remove the fact that Leary is a good entertainer and he’s definitely the person that he acts like on stage - he isn’t selling a fake persona; he just saw what worked for one comedian and presented himself in a very similar way due to the fact that he wanted the credit of being that type of comedian and wanted to target a specific type of audience….
@@talynstarburst2l2l2l Yes. The thing that bothers Hicks so much was the fact that he had already established the on stage character or person he was playing for his stand up presentations and Leary had sort of adapted a lot of Hicks’ style. There was a point that Hicks became resentful of Leary and stopped talking to him - he felt Leary took much of his mannerisms and subjects and a lot of his style and implemented it into his standup and didn’t do those parts on his own; Hicks felt they were copied and Leary started to go do shows alone and make a name for himself without Hicks in the picture. Hicks did not only feel insulted but he was also hurt that Leary who was a writing partner and buddy of his would take those cadences to the stage and take credit for the standup act as if it was his own….

They were friends and went off of each other's material. If the roles were reversed and Hicks made it big instead, people would say that he stole from Leary.

Preaching to the choir. It happens to everyone. I love listening to this. Did an audition tape at a talent school where I told a joke (later used by someone to win a Comedy Festival and got Rich & Famous) did some voices, told them I play guitar - traditional and rock, sing, play football, hockey, etc. They called me mid 80's asking if I wanted to audition for a role, said I was a "perfect fit" as I had "the look" and it was a comedy about two guys that can "sort-of" play guitar & wish to be famous. I turned it down as I had just enrolled into an Electonics / Computer course. The "Big New Thing" of the time. I think You can guess what that movie was. No regrets, as I got to work for a great pay and made life-long friends in the process. Shit happens, but hey, gotta keep on trucking. ✌️❤️🌐😺😎🤙
it was a bit but dennis made a song out of it which is different than doing what louis said he did. it was a real prick thing for dennis to do the bit right after louis, but the song was more of an inspiration than a ripoff. louis didn't write the lyrics, he didn't perform a song.
Right but if I took the main plot points of Harry Potter, added some of my own scenes and ideas, and turned that into a play and performed it, I would still be stealing. It doesn't matter how talented I am at performing or how many awards I win just like it doesn't matter how good of a job Dennis did singing it or writing parts of it, (even though he did steal specific lines like the handicap spots) he's still a thief. The point is that it wasn't an original idea that Dennis came up with and he didn't credit Louis for it at all. That's dirty, especially in the comedy business.
+David May I sort of agree with your point, i disagree with the Harry Potter analogy completley, i agree it was shitty that Dennis never bothered to give Loius any sort of credit or ackknoweledge his inspiration at all, if he did i don't think it's really that bad. If he acknoweledged that CK's bit was the inspiration i think everyone could appreciate that he developed a great bit. Almost like covering a song but developing it even further. He didn't steal it word for word, the deliverys different he introduces new ideas and took it in a completley direction.
+David May I understand where you are coming from but I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there are actually several movies who very much attempt to ride Harry Potter's cash-laden coattails. The Spiderwick Chronicles, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Lemony Snicket's, the Sorcerer's Apprentice, and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children are all very much directed at a Harry Potter-style audience. I chose not to include the Chronicles of Narnia, The Golden Compass, or a few other movies whose source materials either predate Harry Potter's publication or are different enough from Harry Potter's plot that they aren't guilty of the offense you mention. The Divergent series and/or The Hunger Games are good examples of this. I completely support your stance on Leary being a thief. Sometimes people will take the side of the joke thief thinking "It's just not a big deal. They can always think up something else". As you mention, comedians however see this very differently. Their acts and bits are literally how they make a living, feed, clothe and shelter their families. Joke stealing and other IP theft is a VERY big deal to artists, as you mentioned. The thing about Leary is that he's very much a Type-A personality to the point of being a bully. Bill Hick's isn't around anymore to challenge him on his theft and Louis CK is too confident in his ability to always write new material to really care all that much. As I read other comments to this video I have to say that my opinion of people who defend Leary on this subject like +Joshua Drew is that they probably do it because they identify with him somehow. Leary has heavy support from people who either currently live or grew up in his old stomping grounds of Boston...or happen to be Irish. Irish-Americans will often defend one of their own whether they are right or wrong, a holdover from Ireland's rebellious nature toward the Brits.
ok who is opie and Anthony [i am from England] because i just watched a video where dennis is supported on their show, however on this show it snot Louis but someone else who says 'guilt money'?
Leary makes it genuinely an all time great bit- he does it better than Louis And I've seen Louis live several times and never heard of Leary until now The only bit that is really plagiarism is the specific references to parking spaces and such, the concept itself is broad enough
Nah. Leary took a great idea and ran with it, and if CK got over it, perhaps y'all should follow suit. And credit where it's due: Leary turned the concept into song lyrics, sang 'em in a not-half-bad voice, and ultimately created a music video that's as imaginative, well-produced and entertaining as the day it was made.
Yea he had a joke about how funny it would be to name a baby psttsdtstsysyst N theb dane cook had a joke about how funny it would be to name a baby pkkkstddvttss
Is there any example of louis actually doing the bit? Louis has a habit of saying people steal his jokes, sometimes they seem true and sometimes not but for a guy who persistently says that it doesn't bother him, he has keeps on calling people out for it. I find it hard to discredit Leary considering that of the two of these guys, Leary is the one that can make me laugh. Final note: Louis never actually says what his joke was like, for all we know it was a bit about a guy who was an asshole, and could be completely different. If stealing were the same as using a subject matter for a joke that someone else has used before then every single comedian is a joke thief.
Stop reaching, he stole it. There a lot of videos online that compare other comedians jokes to Louis. There’s no question it’s stolen. Denis Leary isn’t half as funny as Louis, that’s how you know who’s stealing who’s.
@@Nuttyirishman85 But just because there are similar bits done by other comedians that we have examples of being similar, that doesn't mean that Louis saying that a bit was stolen with no proof is genuine. He could be talking shit. He essentially says "I said the word asshole in my bit at one point, for one or two small jokes, then Denis stole the concept of someone being an asshole and made a comedy special out of it" And don't say that Louis doesn't misjudge situations, he's apologised for doing so recently enough.
Denis Leary kicks ass! awsome actor and comedian, who the hell cares if he stole "i'm an asshole", obviously Louis CK didn't care, otherwise he would of said or done somthing about it to prevent Denis from collecting any money from the song/lyrics.
I think we need to define the term "stealing." So Mr. Leary and Mr. CK used the same things that make people assholes. The difference is Mr. Leary put it in a song and made a lot of money. Two aspects of comedy that people are missing are presentation and timing which is apparent that Mr. Leary is better at than Mr. CK. From now on, Mr. CK, copywrite your shit.
It was Louis C.K's original idea. So what? Denis Leary still turned it into a hit song. He expanded a mediocre bit into a full length, career defining, funny as hell song. What's wrong with taking life's lemons and making awesome as shit lemonade? What did you expect? He's an asshole and he's proud of it.
What's with people saying he's always claiming people stole off him? He didn't make the claim about Dane Cook. Lots of other people made the claim and he refused to comment. Also Cook did steal. In this case of Leary, He explains exactly what happened. It sounds like he stole it. A lot of Comedians do similar bits or routines without it being stolen. Carlin-Hicks-Louis CK. Very similar style to each other, I don't think either of them stole from each other. But when the punchline and fundamental
I don't get it. What's the big deal if he said it first? He wasn't the one who conceptualized it into a song? Was he mad because he wasn't credited for it? I mean, anyone can say "I'm an Asshole",can't we? Being an asshole can't be patented(laughed a little inside). Doesn't Denis Leary have the right to make a song about a joke he was inspired about?
Louis is so passive about joke stealing, whereas I'm so adamant about it... Louis' just a relaxed guy, and I only wish I could go through life with his ideals.
Leary perhaps should have asked louie's asked permission or at least given a heads up. However if Louie felt so uncomfortable why didnt he just address it in the moment? Is he only upset because the bit became successful? How can u bash a guy behind his back yet never tried to resolve your issues with him face to face?

Are you gonna leave us all hanging?
Bill and Ted ripped you off?
@@tornoofo17 No, a comedian.
Why the hell, after this video, does Denis Leary get the artist credit for the video (below like bar)??
Because he wrote and performed the song ding dong🤷
also Louis CK is a known sexual predator, so why are folks defending him so fiercely? 🤔
I don't see how 2 lines of an entire song being similar to a closing act is stealing, and then he gives you money, and you still complain.
that is totally stealing.
Bill Hicks.
The equivalent of "my biggets flops are your greatest hits" think eminem said that about mgk.
it was a bit but dennis made a song out of it which is different than doing what louis said he did. it was a real prick thing for dennis to do the bit right after louis, but the song was more of an inspiration than a ripoff. louis didn't write the lyrics, he didn't perform a song.
Jack Pilkington he deserves some but not all. it was leary who made a song out of the idea.
***** but that would be word for word. this wasn't. it was the idea.
The dog thing made this that much better.
ok who is opie and Anthony [i am from England] because i just watched a video where dennis is supported on their show, however on this show it snot Louis but someone else who says 'guilt money'?
Leary makes it genuinely an all time great bit- he does it better than Louis
And I've seen Louis live several times and never heard of Leary until now
The only bit that is really plagiarism is the specific references to parking spaces and such, the concept itself is broad enough
isn't the guy in the middle that fella who was embarassed about Ally Sheedy seeing his pants(shorts) in "Wargames"?
What show is this recorded from?
what talk show is this?
Louis wasn't even alive when Leary wrote 'Asshole' too funny
The song came out in 1993, idiot.
I was just being an 'asshole' actually haha
Jjjj2828 No you weren't, you were writing the worst comment in the internets history. Congrats!
@swakachi He doesn't seem pissed at all about it. He's just answering their questions..
Was that the song on bevis and butthead, when bevis dose the words and like has a seizure.
@bwc3821 lol, nothing. it was the only photo of louis and dennis together i could find.
Nah. Leary took a great idea and ran with it, and if CK got over it, perhaps y'all should follow suit. And credit where it's due: Leary turned the concept into song lyrics, sang 'em in a not-half-bad voice, and ultimately created a music video that's as imaginative, well-produced and entertaining as the day it was made.
didn't louis talk about dane cook once too a little bit? i could never find it again
Yea he had a joke about how funny it would be to name a baby psttsdtstsysyst
N theb dane cook had a joke about how funny it would be to name a baby pkkkstddvttss
@ThexArgonaut Dennis Leary put out this song in 93 while Louis CK had been doing stand up since the 80s...
next wednesday 10/11c on the FX network, it's Denis' new show called 'Lucky Leary'...
At least Denis kept it in his pants, Louie.
At least Louis can write comedy
Denis just steals
yeah louis owns the idea and everything related to aknowledging the bad stuff you sometimes do
Is there any example of louis actually doing the bit?
He essentially says "I said the word asshole in my bit at one point, for one or two small jokes, then Denis stole the concept of someone being an asshole and made a comedy special out of it"
And don't say that Louis doesn't misjudge situations, he's apologised for doing so recently enough.
This is a radio show? What station is this and what show, does anyone know?
Denis Leary kicks ass! awsome actor and comedian, who the hell cares if he stole "i'm an asshole", obviously Louis CK didn't care, otherwise he would of said or done somthing about it to prevent Denis from collecting any money from the song/lyrics.
prove it
I can't seem to find any videos that showed just how bad Leary stole from Hicks. It's like word for word
It's quite ironic, an asshole was listening to his bit. 'Shall I steal his bit, I'm an asshole so I will.'
Sucks he stole it. That being said it fits Leary more.
It’s not about how popular you make it to be. It’s about honor Nora. It’s deeper than a paycheck.
Because they do.
It was Louis C.K's original idea. So what? Denis Leary still turned it into a hit song. He expanded a mediocre bit into a full length, career defining, funny as hell song. What's wrong with taking life's lemons and making awesome as shit lemonade? What did you expect? He's an asshole and he's proud of it.
ummm....didnt you start all of this?who is foaming at the mouth?or is that something else?
He's just living up to the bit.
Louie has a black spot on his career now for launching Denis Leary. Other than that the man is a genius.
What full date is this clips' episode from, day, month?
@TheCrisisKings "He even retracted this later and is on more even terms with Leary now."
When?
how gladly I trade the entire life of Dennis for just one hour more of Bill Hicks!
Every time I here that Smokey raspy Denis Leary voice selling some Ford truck I say Why the FUCK is that guy famous?
What's with people saying he's always claiming people stole off him? He didn't make the claim about Dane Cook. Lots of other people made the claim and he refused to comment. Also Cook did steal. In this case of Leary, He explains exactly what happened. It sounds like he stole it. A lot of Comedians do similar bits or routines without it being stolen. Carlin-Hicks-Louis CK. Very similar style to each other, I don't think either of them stole from each other. But when the punchline and fundamental
And for no reason whatsoever: Mathew Broderick!
Infamous joke thieves: Milton Berle, Robin Williams, Denis Leary & Carlos Mencia
And Dane Cook
Pretty sure Dane Cook was only ever accused of stealing a joke or two, and it was far from being a sure thing. I think... not 100% sure.
Amy Schumer
You mean steal the Hicks parts?
You said El Oh El as if this was a spanish tv program.
@cuppajoesugar It's because the video contains the song "Asshole"
When did Dennis never say he wasn’t an asshole?
I wouldn't call Leary a thief. I'd call Bill Hicks and Louis CK Leary's best writers.
Carlin dead. Hicks dead. Mitch dead. Giraldo dead. Lenny dead. Leary -- Christ, help us all. VIVA LOUIS CK!
OK Opie we get it...Go for the "google alert".
I'm more interested in who makes me laugh. Denis Leary does, Louis CK doesn't.
Louis is so passive about joke stealing, whereas I'm so adamant about it... Louis' just a relaxed guy, and I only wish I could go through life with his ideals.
Aged poorly
Leary perhaps should have asked louie's asked permission or at least given a heads up. However if Louie felt so uncomfortable why didnt he just address it in the moment?
Is he only upset because the bit became successful? How can u bash a guy behind his back yet never tried to resolve your issues with him face to face?
