When you're a celebrity most of the people around you kiss your ass all day. So eventually that can be genuinely confusing. Garfunkel said the reason he and Simon broke up was Garfunkel was the only person not kissing Simon's ass, and Simon was the only person not kissing Garfunkel's ass, and that lack of perspective made them think each other were rude people. It stands to reason that Denis's maid noticed how ridiculous he was, just like Greg did. Because that's how he was. But unlike Greg she wouldn't say anything.

Giraldo was trying to set up his Korean nail salon joke and Leary f'd it up by getting all serious. The "Big Russian War " was a brilliant & witty comeback.
If Denis Leary knew history or thought a little bit harder about Giraldo's comeback, he could have said, "Oh, you mean that Big War where millions of people were bombed or shot up in proxy wars?" Giraldo was trying to set up a joke, but I don't think Denis knew that.
The difference between and artist and an intellectual is an artist says a hard thing in an easy way and an intellectual says an easy thing in a hard way -Charles Bukowski
Denis Leary is a man of many talents, and those talents include: plagiarism, theft, pretending to have talent, pretending to be a comic, and pretending to be a tough Boston gangster. Did I mention plagiarism and theft? "You know what...you're the guy in school that did all the homework and then asked if there was anymore that needed to be done." Yeah, good one Denis...that was real clever. Those stupid kids turning in their homework and then doing extra work too, they're so stupid. We wouldn't want kids doing their homework and then looking for more to do - the kids might actually acquire knowledge and learn a thing or two about taking initiative. We wouldn't want those kids learning to apply themselves or learning to rely on themselves or learning to work hard for something. I'm guessing that Greg Giraldo was the guy in school that did do all of HIS OWN homework and turned it in, while Denis Leary was the guy in school that copied Greg Giraldo's homework and then bragged as if it were is own work when he got an A. Denis was also probably that kid in school that just had to be heard - that kid that just always had to speak over somebody because he thought that he was so profound and suave and cool and original, but all that really came out of his mouth was drivel. The only thing more fake than Leary's standup is his Boston-tough-guy act. You don't fool me Denis.
Rescue Me was genuinely a good show though.... and to a lesser extent so was The Job, the show they were talking about..... Denis is a pretty decent actor which is likely why No Cure for Cancer was a good special, he was acting our Hicks's script.... he even stole the Asshole bit from Louis CK in the 80s and eventually had a no1 hit out of it.

"Really Dennis, you'r gonna take that? Greg called you a hack who can't write!" And then Patrice would laugh to himself while Colin bites his own fist as he does when he is frustrated.
I watched this live and was a huge Denis Leary fan at the time. Denis was a GIANT and it felt like he was giving to charity by appearing on a Comedy Central show that came on at 11:30. Not to sound condescending, but it was kind of a big deal that he was on Colin's little show. (BTW, I loved Tough Crowd and CQ), and this was appointment television. What happened next was a comedy disemboweling we have never seen since. When it was clear Denis came in to perform off-the-cuff and was willing to survive off wit alone (which I did think he had clever moments), Greg went in for the kill. It's always a hoot when a "tough guy" like Leary tries to bully someone and just gets blasted. Giraldo totally rocked him back on his heels.
When Denis Leary said, "You're the guy in school that did all the homework and then asked if there was any more that needed to be done,"
Geraldo should have replied by saying, "and you're the kid who never did his own homework, you just copied Bill Hicks'"

Maybe Leary will get some more work if another Ice Age comes out.
Damn, that almost got ugly. Good thing Colin Quinn put his leg on the table.

Quinn smothered and killed a great segment.
That "that's kind of what we do here Denis, as a comedy writer" was frigging gold! Everything about it: the way he just sat there calmly, with the line in his mind, waiting for Leary to stfu with his babbling, delivered it calmly with perfect timing.
The irony is that Greg's response was improvised. There's no way he could've written that before the show and even if he had, that's his job (like he said).
After that Russian remark... Denis Leary's next special... Denis Leary: yeah remember that big Russian war we had with Russia.
Greg was a damn genius. Academically and comedically. He was in the top 1 percent of his Harvard law school.
Greg G was supremely funny and I watch so much of his stuff years later and still laugh hard
Thanks for pointing that out, even though Its been common knowledge about the dude since before this show was new. I understand that people like to point out facts to feel smart, so I hope it worked.

Dennis bit off way more than he could chew against of the most clever comedians that has ever graced comedy. I'm thinking the last thing anyone would ever want to do against the late, great, Greg Giraldo was have a battle of wits with him.
Giraldo brought his A Game and destroyed the whole panel.

We miss you Greg. You and Patrice are entertaining another fan base in a far away dimension but your legend lives on.
Legends never die
We're getting there fellas. Almost redlining in douche chills. Or is it feelings? iikth ! 🤮
Giraldo owned him. No two ways about it.
I always liked how Denis said, “you started it, I’ll finish it.”
No. You started it. He finished it. He bodied that Bill Hicks wannabe. That’s why Giraldo is a legend and Leary is just a self-involved sellout.
What's interesting about this is that Greg's "written" jokes that got the biggest laughs on the show, didn't get as big of a laugh as his improvised jokes! He didn't actually need to write anything. He could've just showed up one minute earlier and still be the funniest person on the show. RIP
Doesn’t surprise me watching this that Giraldo went to Harvard and was a lawyer
and Leary was a dumb shit
Lawyers are lucky he chose comedy
wow, the remark from Giraldo that Leary got offended by was kinda nothing. i thought it would be an insult or something, but its even nothing personal. Leary's reaction seems very egoistical. like these mob guys who can joke around about everyone, but once somebody disagrees with them (not even jokes about them) you become into an enemy.
wow, Leary got really mad. why offend someone if you are easy target yourself? but i bet Colin would fuck him up.
But unlike Greg she wouldn't say anything.

greg is and always will be the dude. so quick to come back at leary in this segment and pretty much embarrassing for dennis
The guy who had to steal jokes to get ahead would complain about another better comics preparedness
Greg Giraldo was the best "no name" in comedy. You can tell a genuine talent by the fact that all his peers loved him.
Leary is out of his league.
Leary was, is, and always will be one of the biggest comedic hacks in history.
Denis Leary deserved this every time he stepped in the spotlight.
The man ripped off America's GREATEST Comedian, who unfortunately was censored and ultimately passed away from Cancer.
Bill Hicks was the best...and always will be.
I put bill hicks alongside George Carlin, as they were both very wise, but as comedians ehh... When I watch their specials I hear more clapping than laughing.
I might come of like a douche here but on my oppinion Hicks never struck me as funny. It just feels like he has no punchlines just rants. Not saying he isn't talanted the number of people that love his comedy speaks for itself.
"America's GREATEST Comedian" Hicks is overrated. But Leary ripped him off alright.
Hicks death was faked. He is living as Alex Jones now. :-I
Man agreed. Hicks was ahead of his time. Hicks, Carlin and Pryor top 3.
Irony. Leary pointing out that someone writes jokes. He's used to just taking other people's work. Hack!!
I forget who it was, but one of the cellar comics summed up this entire ordeal perfectly. Greg didn't even have to use the the nuclear stuff - the joke thievery. He was smart enough to riff circles around Leary.
I love how Dennis says "let's go in" the guy has never been in the army or done any form of public service and says "let's go in" like war is no biggie
Colin should've asked him whether he's ready for the military draft after that "let's go in".
Let's go in. Hundreds of thousands possibly millions will die, with the added benefit of nuclear holocaust, let's go in!
He's is the 90s early 2000s equivalent of modern right-wing comedians complaining about "cancel culture" when they slightly criticize for saying racist shit.
I thought this was a show for comedians? Why was Dennis on it?
Leary admitted on his own later on, that Giraldo got the better of him here.
Trending InterActive Studios ....but he's still an enormous twat.
Trending InterActive Studios Yes, but what else could Leary say?
@Brazilian Atlantis That's true.
But he probably said if after Greg passed
I noticed Bill Hicks wasn't mentioned once during the Leary roast. I wonder if that was a prequisite for him agreeing to do it.
Giraldo was trying to set up his Korean nail salon joke and Leary f'd it up by getting all serious. The "Big Russian War " was a brilliant & witty comeback.
I don't understand the joke, please explain.
If Denis Leary knew history or thought a little bit harder about Giraldo's comeback, he could have said, "Oh, you mean that Big War where millions of people were bombed or shot up in proxy wars?"
Giraldo was trying to set up a joke, but I don't think Denis knew that.
That big Russian war. Leary OWNED!! Absolutely priceless
Wow, he's so cool. He's wearing shades indoors. What a cool clever guy.
Forget these two, Lenny Clark is killing me
That Russia comment really pissed Leary off . Thought for sure Giraldo was gonna call Leary a joke theif when he went after his joke writing

Bukowski was an overrated. Nobody cares about betting on horse races or classical music.
The late great Greg Giraldo! Quick on his feat, funny AND making valid points. RIP
The way Colin puts his leg up on the table was a subtle way to defuse the situation.
Not so subtle
3:40 It was at this point, Denis knew... he had fucked up
The death blow at 4:25...
Sure, Greg wrote his jokes before the show, like an actual comic! Leary just ripped em from dead comedians like some grave-digging hack.
😂😂😂
Your right on only if my own kids did extra work in the class room lol
Rescue Me was genuinely a good show though.... and to a lesser extent so was The Job, the show they were talking about..... Denis is a pretty decent actor which is likely why No Cure for Cancer was a good special, he was acting our Hicks's script.... he even stole the Asshole bit from Louis CK in the 80s and eventually had a no1 hit out of it.

RIP Giralddo. You made me laugh.
If Patrice was there he would have just thrown oil on the fire for the fun of it after Colin tried to keep things from escalating by putting his foot on the table. "Really Dennis, you'r gonna take that? Greg called you a hack who can't write!" And then Patrice would laugh to himself while Colin bites his own fist as he does when he is frustrated.
If ONLY Patrice was there! Man!
Leary was no match for a smarter and more prepped Giraldo. Greg allowed Denis to stumble over his own feet and executed him standing. This is brutal, and hilarious, to watch.
Greg should have said "you're right, it's very insensitive of me to write jokes when you're writer died of cancer"
Dude, Giraldo was SO good. Honestly tragic he’s gone. I would’ve loved to see him go on fox news and take down those idiots like he took down dennis here.
