Denis Leary lifted segments of Bill Hicks act, re-worded it and perfomed it at a faster tempo which led to people referring to him as Bill Hicks on speed. Material such as "jim fix, cigerette warnings, and heavy metal records backwards are just a few examples of entire segments he lifted from Bill Hicks act - he simply re-worded it. He also lifted the mock shooting of himself at the end of his show directly from Bill Hicks shows aswell as hick's "famous people dying" segment. I remember a few years ago a few friends came round to my house for a meal. Afterwards we sat down and played xbox. We got into a discussion and they happened to mention by pure chance Denis Leary's stand up show called "no cure for cancer". When i told them that Denis Leary had stole alot of stuff off Bill Hicks they wouldn't believe me. So i started playing them my private collection of Bill Hicks stand up dvds and bootleg vhs tapes and i skipped to the parts that i knew Leary had stole. Being die hard Denis Leary fans they knew his material off by heart. When they saw Bill Hicks performing Learys act they thought the shows must have been done afterwards. I then showed them the exact dates the Hicks shows were performed as its written on the inside sleeve of the dvds and bootleg vhs tapes that i own. I proved to them that Hicks shows were done years before Learys. They were forced to admit i was right. (Grudgingly).
True (assuming LCK's account is true) - but I am glad that song exists. It is a great song (even if you hate the artist you can appreciate the art). LCK's version was a stand up routine and Leary adapted it into a song. Still stealing material for sure (and from a relatively unknown artist at the time) - but I think there's a fine line between "stealing" and being "influenced".

Always felt like Bill would gave been a fascinating guy to sit down and talk with. Leary is the noisy and annoying guy you'd leave the bar to get away from.
His entire "I'm an asshole" thing he lifted from Louis CK. To be fair, Denis did get Louis' permission to lift it. The whole 'asshole' thing was one joke in Louis' set, and Louis famously scraps his entire set after a bit and writes all new material. So Denis asked if he could have that one bit and Louis said "sure".

So i started playing them my private collection of
Bill Hicks stand up dvds and bootleg vhs tapes and i skipped to the parts that i knew Leary had stole.
Couldnt believe Louis CKs story about how Leary stole the ‘I’m an Asshole’ bit off him 🤯
True (assuming LCK's account is true) - but I am glad that song exists. It is a great song (even if you hate the artist you can appreciate the art). LCK's version was a stand up routine and Leary adapted it into a song. Still stealing material for sure (and from a relatively unknown artist at the time) - but I think there's a fine line between "stealing" and being "influenced".
@@Weird-City not in Leary's case. Art imitates life, life imitates art and so forth but Leary literally steals material and adds no further value. He makes it worse. He is a comedian cuckoo. A fraud.
I couldn't believe it either because I never saw or heard any proof of it.
Bill Hicks was seriously underrated.
wrong man died
Dennis thinking to himself… “Maybe if I just yell and talk really fast like I’m on crack nobody will notice I ripped off Hicks”
Bill Hick's delivery is so much better. Much more natural. Probably because it is his original material. Leary tries too hard.
If he'd steal from a comedy god, imagine how many other unknown comics he's picked the pockets of.
Bill Hicks had the last laugh, people STILL remember him & nobody remembers leary
It’s true. I only knew Leary from Ice Age
I remember Leary. And you don't have the last laugh when you die of cancer at 33.
Yeah, I know what you meant, don't worry...
Plenty remember Leary. Someone made an "I'm an asshole" reference to him lately cus of his role in the older Spiderman movie in relation to the new Spiderman movie. You're out of touch haha.
@@steveking9146 a bit he stole from Louis CK.
I love Bill Hicks, but he became famous about 10 years or so after he died when a few of his shows finally got released on DVD. Meanwhile Leary had a pretty successful career in Hollywood, even having several starring roles, and would go on to write and star in an award winning drama series that ran for 7 seasons.
So you, as a fan of stand-up comedy may be more familiar with Bill Hicks, but Denis Leary is FAR more known to the mainstream.
Paul Dano should play Bill Hicks if they ever make a movie
I only did stand up comedy for about 5 years, and I left comedy partially because of this reason. I was obsessed with originality, yet I’d have to change my set because someone stole my joke.
I'm also willing to bet another reason you left is that our current culture no longer rewards originality. Too much risk....must worship that almighty algorithm!
@@JoeDiVitaMusicdon't ever be surprised if they have a tick list of things to say and not to say all of them not funny.
I only did stand up comedy for about 5 years too and I also left comedy partially for this reason. I too was obsessed with originality, yet I'd also have to change my set because someone stole my joke.
As a Brit it is genuinely impossible to watch Leary. We hate that style. Even if he was the best at that style he'd be terrible, but he's even a failure at being a clown.
HA WHAT? Are you speaking for a country populating millions of people, Jesus
@@Fabulavevotrust me and him when we say that hyper act doesn't work here. The only one that does it is Russell Howard and the only people who think it's in any way endearing is young über liberal girls. Not women.
I'd love to meet Leary one day just so I could trash him for being a thief.
@Bryce Czirr lol ok 👌
@I'm just a worm oh I've watched it several times lol
Hicks was also known to be a thief at times. Several of his well-known jokes are based on the material of other famous comedians.
He’d probably just laugh at you
@@Fabulavevo That's because I'm actually funny.
Holy shit!! That's not only obvious, he didn't even change the phrasing. The primus, punctuation, it's all the same.. That hurts
Primus? Like the Les Claypool band?
“Ian. Nigel. Come here-ah.” Genius!
Leary should have Hicks beside his name on every credit he has.
It's insane how bad Leary's delivery is
Denis Leary comedy brings back so many bad memories
Oh man. I knew that Leary robbed him, but I didn't realize how how much and how blatantly. Amazing Leary can show his face.
I’m on the same exact boat.
Here in 2020
This videos was published August 2019.
No one gives a fuck when you're here
That was the joke going around at the time: Why is Denis Leary getting away with doing Bill Hicks' act? Because there's No Cure For Cancer.
Ultimately, Bill will be remembered as an absolute legend, whilst Dennis will be remembered as a catastrophically poor imitation...
I knew he stole from Hicks and Louis CK but never knew it was THIS bad! Holy shit!!
I'm drunk, I'm nobody, I'm drunk I'm famous, I'm drunk I'm fucking dead, that piece made me laugh
Great art is never created in a vacuum. But Leary WAS a vacuum. A joke vacuum. Specifically, a Bill Hicks joke vacuum.
At least denis got two Emmy's we know how bill feels about Emmy's that means it's good in our culture
This is spot on
This just makes me wanna watch Hick’s
Still waiting for that Dennis Leary cancer moment, but Hicks died first. So, I don't know.
Dennis “The Mimic” Leary. Conspiracy theorists will tell you he probably sacrificed Hicks for his own fame.
There is only (one) real comedian who was waking the sleeping masses that 99% of this Millennial Generation haven't a clue about (George Carlin) and of course Bill.
This is what thieves to do in any form of art. They make it boring so they have plausible deniability
Wow. How could someone do this and live with themselves?
Sociopath with no artistic integrity or character.
Better question is how all the comics didnt out leary and exile him out of the scene? Hes still friends with all his old standup buddies
$$$$$
Bro only stole a couple of jokes and shit it’s not like he started killing people
Amy Schumer is trans Dennis Leary
So many smoking jokes and he goes at 32 from cancer.
Yeah, but it wasnt even lung cancer. It was pancreatic, I think
Denis Leary takes Bill Hicks’ jokes and makes them worse.
Comedians "borrowing" from each other is common enough, but this is blatant theft made all the more evident with the film splices. It also proves what many of us already knew. Bill Hicks was a consummate comedian, hands down.
I didn’t even know that guy from that firefighter show was a comedian. But I’ve listened to Bill Hicks since I was 12.. no joke. And that was 16 years ago..
7:18 that was fucking BRUTAL
something about Learys face and delivery bothers me to no end. Watching this video was like riding in a awful rollercoaster. Hicks is awesome!!
He literally stole Bill Hick's entire act didn't he? Did he not think anyone would notice?
It was before the internet/information age. He probably figured some people would notice, but not enough to matter.
Leary got famous before Hicks and probably thought he was stealing some nobody's material. That is what Led Zeppelin did with obscure blues and rock musicians' material. I love Zeppelin's and Leary's works, but they are thieves.
Hooptie, who did Zeppelin steal from?
Psychotropic, great point. I bet you're right.
@@JW-qx3xr I'm a huge Zeppelin fan and have to admit several of the songs were lifted. Dazed and Confused, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, etc. I don't think Stairway was copied though. That suit was frivolous.
He was a thief but it would have been better if the footage you showed of Bill was chronologically before the footage you show of Leary.
Bill Hicks has now been dead as long as he was alive. That bums me out.
this explains why Denis Leary is completely irrelevant and probably hasn't had a comedy tour in over a decade, because he has to steal jokes to have an act and in today's age you are going to get caught if you do
Happy Heavenly Birthday Bill.
Before the internet..... he just thought he would get away with it. If it wasn't on T.V, you hadn't gone to the show and you couldn't get it on video... You never knew and never would..... 30 years later..... Here it is... This copying, stealing is soooo bad.
Denis Leary: "because im asshole, asshole, yeah oh yeah yeah!"
Always felt like Bill would gave been a fascinating guy to sit down and talk with.
Leary is the noisy and annoying guy you'd leave the bar to get away from.
BILL HICKS WAS THE GREATEST COMEDIAN / SOCIAL COMMENTATOR EVER!
Denis Leary is, on the other hand, a plagiarist!
I wonder if Leary will ever admit to it.
like the late great norm macdonald, these men turned their own manner of death into a joke long before it happened
Wow, plagiarized AND horrible, pseudo-manic delivery of the guy that gave him his break's material.
This is hard to watch, I grew up watching "Rescue Me" with my dad and Tommy was our favorite character, made me love Leary...Sucks.
Having these clips side by side it’s so obvious to see the difference between being a great comedian and trying way too hard to make people laugh
And Greg Giraldo taught him what a real comedian is. Exposed and buried him.
The ending of this video is perfect
How did he (Leary) get away with it? No internet, that's how!
Lose the glasses fella
The best thing Leary has done is small soldiers!!! sad.
Damn this is devastating.
I’m can’t stand the sound of Dennis Leary’s voice. He sounds annoying when he is butchering someone else’s jokes.
Wow. I never realized Dennis stole bill hicks act.
I still love Dennis
Plenty of people do because they've seen him a ton of great movies and an award winning tv drama that ran for 7 seasons. His career in Hollywood was already taking off by the time he did No Cure For Cancer in 1993, which feature a few of the bits he lifted from Hicks. Never mind the rest of the set being uniquely different.
Ashamed to say I saw Leary,s act first and liked it. Didn't know the p.o.s stole it all from Bill. You can't even compare the two? Bill was a genius, and Leary was just a thief. Hope he cries himself to sleep every night over what he did.
Yeah you're not alone. I also used to like The Witcher, but then I learned of Elric. I really need to be more cautious.
