Northernlion, I really enjoy watching you LP series since it means I get to watch you learn how to play the game rather than someone who is already an expert. It makes the experience seem more "real" and you are much more relatable as a narrator. Your humor, while not hilarious, is funny and I like listening to it. While I myself do not enjoy playing games such as Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac, it is still very entertaining to have your videos playing in the background as I work. Thank you.
if i end up leaving the key behind on a run like that if im ever lucky enough to get to that point in the game i would close the application, uninstall it from my ps4, and then never play it again
Yeah dude, it was painful watching that... It's not a big deal though, eventually a run like that becomes standard and if you were ever asked to bring the key back another time further in the game it'd be no problem to you.
One time, I got the key to 3-4 before getting hit by a yeti and, through an insane chain of bounces, falling off the level. Another time, I got it to the end of 3-2 before getting frozen by a mammoth camped at the exit, and the key flying out of my hands off the level. Those were my first and second attempts at getting the key to Tunnel Man, and I did it on my next attempt. So happy when I did, haven't had that feeling since beating the Four Kings in Dark Souls.
The lag on this video makes his deaths so much more hilarious. Like, he falls on a spike and he's still like "ok, let's see what we can do here" and then he screams in a delayed fashion.

Northernlion: Take as long as you need to open the shortcut. I love watching the mini-catastrophes and failures. Fun tip: If you have the cape and you're using it to descend slowly, you can land on spikes. It's stressful to try, but trust me, it works.

Also, the baseball glove: it makes you throw farther. Pretty simple. I guess I can see how it might be a little confusing since the gloves are used for catching, and as far as I know you can't actually catch things in Spelunky...
Thanks for the awesome vids. A small suggestion for serious health in Spelunky: When you find Kali altars, sacrifice as many ALIVE creatures on them. Dazed cavemen, scorpions or Damsels. If you get wo living Damsels in 2 levels, you get Kapala (you don't have to carry it. With that). Now when you kill enemies, you absorb the little blood drops that come out of jumps or whip attacks. Every 4-5 of them gives you one EXTRA LIFE!!! That way I got to 21 health (But was crushed but smasher thingies)
What really puts the point on the losing the key moment is when he tries to kill himself, but fails due to the parachute he spent money on despite having the cape. That just gives it the little extra something special.
Northernlion, here's a tip : when the exit is in a pit and you want to rescue the damsel without actually going through the door, just throw the dog down. It should walk through the door by itself and you will save a rope everytime instead of wasting one.
NL, I just got Spelunkey over the weekend and it's pretty f'ing tough. it's so easy to just not pay attention, drop down a hole and get impaled or hit any other trap. There is definately a learning curve.
I'm not completely sure what the baseball mitt does in the Xbox version, but in the original it lets you throw objects with much more force. The one time I got it on the Xbox version i think it let me throw things in straight lines.
That's the best part! When you see that he's actually succeeding... you think about the million of possibilities of how he's going to fail. And on the off-chance that he does succeed with his goal... there's always next time!
Northernlion, I personally would like to see ALL the videos, if you do eventually decide to get the key off camera that's okay too. Watching you succeed is awesome, watching you struggle is awesome, just watching your videos is awesome, they make me happy, no matter what kind of video it is. And you don't suck in Spelunky :P you seem... average?.. you ARE getting better, that seems clear.
How i made it to the end of the ice caves! : 1.Stop rushing. 2.Collect As many damsels as you can until you find the key (Get atleast 6 hearts , after then just stop searching after damsels) 3:Collect ALOT of gold to buy items. 4.Get cape/jetpack and compass this will help alot in the ice caves ( Nl already know this is just for those who cant make it :P ) 5.After getting boms/ropes , jetpack/cape and the compass focus more on getting to the exit and stop collecting so much gold.
Ryan i'm watching this lets play since episode one i know that there are some games like super metaboy that need off camera training but the thing i enjoy the most in this siries is to see your learning progress keep every gameplay recorded if someone dont like to watch them all they dont have to but i think i can speak for at least a part of your subscribers by saying keep up this great content
I actually recommend doing the haunted castle level on these runs because as you saw when you first did it, the exit of the level is right at the bottom of the castle, and there is usually a damsel by it. The level is predictable and short. Try it out sometime!

Although you may not be the best Spelunky player there is, the content that you put out for us is quite enjoyable due to the commentary and the hilarious mistakes you make. Off camera runs I feel would ruin the experience as we would not get to see your full journey from a catastrophic failure to a great player. As long as you keep putting out these videos I will keep watching. Keep up the good work.

On the dead are restless levels in the jungle, when you find a grave with a skeleton with a crown on his head, if you make your way into the grave and bomb the floor under it, you can make your way into a secret level like the worm and you can unlock a dude with a top hat to play as! Just trying to help! :D
I have a tip for those shopkeepers. If you anger one, and he's guarding the exit, if you can get into the exit without injuring any shopkeeper on the floor, I think they lose aggression. Happened to me once, but maybe I just got lucky.
Man. I really wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt at 11:45. I kept saying to myself, "It's okay. He knows he left the key back there. He must just be clearing the path so he can carry it to the exit more safely." I see him approaching the exit and now I'm thinking, "All right, now he's going to turn back and get the k- ....he just exited the level...."
apparently the XBLA version requires several items to unlock shortcuts, instead of cash only... previous shortcuts required bombs, ropes, money and a shotgun to unlock
I unlocked the shortcut a couple days ago, and finally finished the game yesterday (starting at the temple). Now I'm working on a full run of the game from the beginning... while trying to get to the city of the gold if possible.... just to make you feel better, I'm at around 600 deaths.
Keep up the good work! Also, the golden chests reliably contains an item that is very helpful. So when you have gotten the key to the end of the Ice Caves, try opening it.
I think once you have the compass, cape and key, just NEVER LET IT GO FOR ANY REASON. It would also help if you let go of the run button every now and then.
There's a bit of audio desync in this as well NL; didn't notice it until later on in the video (around the 20 minute mark). Loving the Lets Play so far, game seems to run on a worse Troll Engine than Isaac at times!

The problem is that, at this point, he doesn't realize that when he stands on a ledge or crawls over one, he drops whatever he is holding automatically. I can't really blame him for not noticing that he dropped the key. It could happen to anyone, really.
As it as been said by many other commentators: I too, have not sat through all these videos to find out the episode where you get the key is not going to be recorded. :c

don't anger the shop keeper for a shotgun or for anything really if you need to carry the key: if you carry the shotgun the shopkeepers at the end of a level arent so bad - but you only have that key to carry so it puts you in a bad spot

I dunno why but you keep having some slight audio desync but I didnt notice until the "Oh I can use this rat to trigger the trap" 20 minutes or so in. I don't really mind and wouldn't notice if i didn't pay close attention

Really great play this video but holy shit THE KEY, I didn't know you could drop items when you hang off ledges in this version. If these kind of things are done on purpose to raise the steaks, you're doing it right.
My most frustrating moment was when I had the key on 3-4, next to the exit, then dropped it on one of the alien jump pads, where it proceeded to bounce and hit me numerous times until it killed me.

If you sacrifice 2 pugsels to Kali, she'll give you the Kapala.

I just got the key to the temple. You basically need a jetpack to get through the jungle and ive caves. And a compass makes it easy too.
