The lyrics you read all reference sailing terminology. The person in the song is taking sailing journey to Papeete, Tahiti on a boat that is 80' at the waterline (big boat). I take it he is on the night watch looking at the Southern Cross constellation of stars and pondering his life. As a person who has spent some time on a sailboat offshore at night, I can attest that it can be a spiritual experience to just sit and ponder the night sky and endless water as you sit for hours on your watch. Beautiful song.

My husband and I watch several sailing channels and would love to go around the world on a catamaran, which I know is not actually meant for the that but so many are doing it and have already done it that it doesn't scare me. However, we are almost finished with our campervan and all the solar and batteries, I believe we could power our house if need be. You never know what life will throw your way and I'm not ruling sailing out. I'm so happy for you to have had that experience!

@@tammieparrishmiller3669 That sounds wonderful Tammie. I say just do it if that's your dream. There are many mutltihulls sailing the seas. Just plan and prepare. I am glad we did it while we were quite young. I was 21 when we started building our boat (my husband had been planning it much longer). We spent 4 yrs building the boat, working and building up our cruising kitty., Then 18 years living aboard, cruising and spending too much time tied up at the dock, working on other people's boats when we ran out of $$. We were just kids and were willing to work hard to achieve our dreams. It was a wonderful experience and I have not regrets. Good luck !

Steven Stills wrote the lyrics on David Crosby's sailboat The Mayan....it was actually 74 feet long....sailing down to French Polynesia.....trying to get over his divorce from a French singer songwriter....if you want the back story to this song.....here it is....this music was written by the Curtis Brothers along with a few of the lyrics.....ruclips.net/video/TNEpFrOWooE/видео.html

The music video is set on a sailboat, and that’s the key to the lyrics.
The Southern Cross is 4 stars in the sky in the southern hemisphere used by sailors for navigation. (Check the Australian flag 🇦🇺 and New Zealand flag 🇳🇿)
Steven Stills wrote this post divorce and after a long sail through French Polynesia (mid Pacific, east of Australia)
Stills is quoted “It’s about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds”
This song was based on a 1970’s demo of a song called “Seven League Boot” by The Curtis Brothers.

This was likely my intro' to CSN (conscious, on MTV -I was born in 1969 -realized that I had heard other CSN, and became a fan, of each man's music). I traveled to Australia, with my Parents in 1986, for a 2.5 week tour around the nation. And, "that's the Southern Cross!" the north and south hemisphere' of Earth see stars differently, and seasons, and even water rotation. I've sailed on lakes like in the Tetons, the Great Lakes, ferries up to Alaska, to Newfoundland, Cruise Ships in the Caribbean to many locations, in the Mediterranean -not a sailor, yet experience out on the open Ocean, when land is seen, or only water and the land appears at the horizon, ...this is brilliant introspection, with music chorus.

A geographic love song for sailors/seamen.Most of the things he is talking about in the song are places along his sailing journey, the terms are jargon for seamen.Waterline(how deep the boat sets in the water),sailing a reach before a following sea(to have your vessel go in the direction of the waves) and the downhill run from Papeete( is the wind direction being behind you and (POP A Ate Tay) is the island direction it is coming from))
Avalon, I assume, is Avalon Bay, Santa Catalina( an island off the coast of California). The song talks about the beginning legs of the Coconut Milk Run across the South Pacific Ocean. First stop is usually the Marquesa Islands (Iles Marquises); then through the Tuamotu islands (Archipel des Tuamotu) to Papeete, Tahiti. A bit over 3,000 miles.
The Southern Cross is a reference to the stars in the night sky in the southern hemisphere (the bottom side of the world globe or down under ).In the northern hemisphere sailors used the North Star as a positioning point to navigate by(I think) at night.

He's on a fair sized sailboat ("80 feet of waterline, nicely making wake" ) headed South towards French Polynesia and the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific. HIs reference to the Southern Cross presumably refers to the sort of cosmic awareness a person might get when on night watch onboard a boat out in the isolation of the ocean and seeing the constellation for the first time.
Stills said he wrote it shortly after a divorce, so the narrative of healing through communing with nature is pretty clear.

One of my favourite CSN songs. I'm glad you played the album version, which has an extra verse which adds a lot to the story. The Southern Cross is a distinctive star constellation here in the southern hemisphere (and on my country's national flag). The first verse is talking about a yacht travelling south through French Polynesia. A tale of lost love, and of accepting that sometimes you need to lose love to grow as a person. The line "we never failed to fail - it was the easiest thing to do" gets me every time. The album's title track "Daylight Again/ Cost of Freedom" is a hauntingly beautiful track too, and adds to the vocal magic by having Art Garfunkel as guest vocalist.

Yeah it's about a man searching for sure. He's reflecting on his life while he's in this vast ocean on this boat and there's nothing else to do but think about his life. I've only done about 10 mi out past the shore so I don't know what it's like to be completely in the middle of a big ocean and a tiny sailboat but even at 10 mi out it feels pretty remote from everything else on earth. I'll never got to see the southern cross because I've never gone into the southern hemisphere yet. Peace!

NOBODY sang perfect harmony like CS&N! I learned to sing harmony in my youth singing along with them. "Sailing a reach before a following sea (winds across your deck and the waves coming from behind you, instead of coming at you head-on), She was making for the trades (trade winds) on the outside, and the downhill run (south) to Papeete (capital of Tahiti), Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas (and island group), We got eighty feet of the waterline (the length of the boat at the waterline), Nicely making way" (moving forward). These are all maritime sailing terms. This song is a lament by a sailor at sea about a lost love.

My absolute favorite CS&N song. I've always loved nautical themes, tall sailing ships, lighthouses, schooners, legends, etc. Each member of CS&N, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, are outstanding on their own. Biz, the song was written by Steven Stills after his wife left him. He owned a sailboat moored at a home he had in Australia. He set sail, not knowing if he was going to come back alive, or dive overboard to commit suicide in the South Pacific. The Southern Cross is a very famous constellation that can only be seen from south of the equator.
Fortunately, while sailing that night he looked up at the Southern Cross, and after long contemplation he decided to not jump overboard, and that music--- not his ex-wife, nor any other woman, was his first and truest love.

The Southern Cross are constellations that form a cross and can be viewed from most of the Southern Hemisphere. People who sail the seas use the Southern Cross to help them navigate their boats. You should watch Crosby Stills and Nash's video of this song. They are sailing, and it makes the words make a little more sense.

On a midnight watch (a time when youre sailing the boat but have a lot of time to think) he realizes why she ran away. Now all he has left is his ship and his music. The Southern Cross is a constellation used to navigate when south of the equator. He feels the Southern Cross has shown him the way to understand why he lost "that woman girl".
