Brother. I am a wood worker/ kitchen builder. Everything you did was "wrong", but I like it. your end result turned out pretty good. I'll probably riff on some of your ideas in the future. I'm always open to new ideas and techniques.

I think it came out great and I probably would put it in my kitchen.. now if you didn't want painted cabinets this wouldn't work but if they are going to be painted anyway I think they look as nice as any of the other options on RUclips and they don't require hundreds dollars worth of tools

I do have one question.. do you think it would be ok to use 1x2s or 1x3s in place of the mdf trim? Thanks again for posting this! I’ve been needing to build my cabinet doors for much longer than I’m going to admit on RUclips. 😂
Thank you for the comment! I think the 1x2 and 1x3s COULD work but I would stick with something even slimmer maybe closer to to 1/2 or less. In my example here I feel like the thickness of the plywood and mdf was a little too thick, it’s just what I had laying around to make the vid!
I did this to my doors. But because of the recessed edge around the door, I could not install euro hinges . But the still look better than old 1972 brown Laminate. Next I will be making new shaker doors.
I know you said you would use this in a kitchen but mine look amazing. We live on a military base and their house are very outdated so I thought doing something like this would be very renter Friendly

Awesome! I think with some light birch plywood, or whatever thin finished plywood you can find in the size too need, and some thin MDF trim it could be light enough to hang with probably 4 hinges. Things to look out for, warped plywood and you’ll also get a good feel for the weight by just picking up the plywood. Good luck!
They could be, but I would recommend them in hallways, linen closets, garages, etc. If you were to consider a kitchen consider the thickness of the trim applied to the back board (my example is probably too think), how flat and square your back boards are and gaps where everything meets to make sure it’s really smooth before painting. So I did this but after painting my door it seems to have bowed. I used interior acrylic semi-gloss applied with a paint roller. Any help on why this keeps happening? I used pine on 1 and birch on another. They both are now bowed.
Did you realize they were bowed after install? I had one come up slightly bowed after install I think my verdict is that board was bowed enough from purchase prior to install that became more apparent once installed. This is also why If using hardware store wood I wouldn’t recommend kitchens for these doors. Sorry that happened to you!
The door looks very good but the potential issue is exactly what happened to you. The frame and the panel are bound to each other and the materials absorb moisture differently during the season which is why panels are not glued or fastened to the frame in a true panel door.
I guess you CAN, if you’d like to. Personally, I would make sure I used a table saw for very precise cuts for the board. But at that point, you could figure out if to do true shaker cabinet doors. Also, a reasonable priced option is to “reface” kitchen cabinets doors. You can do some googling on refacing. It’s much cheaper than new cabinets. Thank you!

Dude you would have been better off using real wood glue. You wouldn't have needed any nails. But congratulations on working double hard to get something that you wanted. I'm sure you could have looked at some woodworking videos before you did this but good job

Nice easy way to make shaker doors. You might be able to use an iron on edge banding also instead of puttying all the sides.
