Good honest video. I see a lot of pretty areas in Kigali, that look comparable, or even better than some US neighborhoods. But what you do not see inside of one of those fancy houses or mansions in those neighborhoods. Thank you for inviting us into your homes and demonstrating what it is like to live there.
Nice video! When I was growing up in Caribbean, we had mostly tin roofs in the rural areas. I love the sound of the rain on the roof. For me, it's therapeutic. If I were to move to Africa, I would definitely want a house that have tin roofs.

@@SamHijazi Thanks for the suggestion. I might do that when I get back. I'm currently in the UK for Christmas. I pay about FRW 315,000 ($300) per month, inclusive of water and rubbish collection. Costs me about 10k ($10) per month for electricity. It was unfurnished when I moved in. House and apartment prices in Kigali vary wildly. You can spend $300 a month on a two-bedroom house or $1,000 a month on a one-bed apartment. It's a good idea to move into a temporary houseshare or BnB whilst you shop around for a good deal. You're likely to view a few places before you find the one that fits.

I would probably suggest coming to visit for a couple of months before making a decision about moving. Depending where you're coming from, it can be quite an adjustment. Spend the first few weeks being a total tourist, then spend the last few weeks looking objectively at whether you like the vibe, the housing, the size of the city and whether you think you could make a living here.
Do I hear bassy music in the background at the start? I'm super sensitive to sound. Do you think that could be an issue in Rwanda? I love birdsong and I'm immune to traffic and construction noise. But dogs barking or music would drive me totally nuts. A uniquely helpful video - thank you so much for taking time out to make it. It's a real gift.
Well done girl! It appears that you are living in Kigali like middle class local Rwandans rather than like Muzungu. Most of the foreigners that I know in Kigali have big modern houses, good amenities, paved roads, and better service than you are showing. Enjoy your life with that safe, clean, green, and beautiful city.🙏✌️
I originally came to Rwanda as a VSO. It was very different 14 years ago and the development has been pretty incredible in that time, especially the paving and electricity. You're right though, this is fairly representative of middle class living. House prices and amenities vary wildly in Kigali, as with most cities. You can easily spend over $1,000 a month and get a swimming pool and driver. But I live in Rwanda for the quality of life, too. To pay big money for accommodation every month means big stress every month. I prefer a modest house and time to enjoy it.

My biggest worry about moving to Africa has been stuff like malaria and tse-tse flies. I read about early European explorers having a short life expectancy, and it scares me for my family. I have this inage of people walking around like they're in a zombie movie 😂 What are health issues like in your experience, do people lose a lot of time to the illnesses that plagued people in the past? Are they avoidable ir easily treatable ?
That's a good topic for a video. I'll try and fit it in. I've had malaria a couple of times over the space of a decade. Mostly it's very easily treated with a three-day course of Coartem. It's definitely not pleasant, but so long as there aren't complications you recover quickly, especially if you're a well-fed adult with access to health care. In Rwanda, instances of malaria are quite low and we don't have yellow fever. Parts of Kenya and South Africa don't have malaria due to altitude and climate. Other cities in Uganda and West Africa are very high risk. So Africa is diverse, even in the types of illness you can get. I've probably lost fewer days to sickness in Rwanda than I have to colds and flu in the UK. The climate here is very mild and you don't get severe fluctuations in temperature like you do further from the equator. Illnesses that are considered 'tropical diseases' in the West are just 'diseases' here and hospitals know how to treat them because they see them every day. If you need surgery or treatment for complex conditions, you're likely to go to Kenya, India or Europe, but on a day-to-day basis, things are fine. It's important to keep up to date with your vaccinations, but it is anywhere in the world.

It would depend on the size of the house and the location. You'd need to ask an estate agent. Try asking in Living in Kigali or Kigali Expat Social, there might be a few people in there with a better idea, but the more specific you can be the more accurate the information they can give you.
Generally, if the water is off and I can't take a shower, I'll fill a bowl from the emergency water bucket, wash in it, and then put the dirty water in the top of the toilet cistern or pour it straight into the toilet. That gives you enough for one good flush if you’re desperate.
@@writerinrwanda normally if water is off there is a top tank containing the water from tap as reserve installed work automatic as reserve you can using in bathroom, toilet , kitchen depend on how the owner of the house installed and some erea they don't know the story of water off .

Not many barking dogs, but certainly a lot of bars and shouting in the streets. It can be a bit of a challenge at times.
