I had read his book “In the realm of hungry ghosts”, and was fascinated with his approach to addiction psychology. I was adopted and my biological mother carried me at age 16 in a home for pregnant teens. My mother who raised me was probably taught all of that conventional wisdom of the 80s. My parents were not good at accepting my emotions and I was dismissed as “too sensitive,” when in reality I was probably needing more nurturing than the average child having been born into a stressful situation and taken away from my biological mother.
I have struggled with autoimmune issues and other mysterious health problems for the past 10 or so years. Gabor has helped me to understand how and why so that I can take the necessary steps to nurture my body and mind. He has allowed me to understand the science so I don’t go mad with frustration and he has helped me to be my own gentle and nurturing parent when I need one. Everything he says makes sense and the information he is sharing is invaluable.

Amazing interview. Gabor has been such a huge help in helping me heal. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 13 years old (that was after a childhood filled with other major illnesses), and fell into major drug and alcohol addiction shortly thereafter. I didn’t know it at the time, but the abusive and very neglectful household I grew up in contributed greatly, and now that I am focused on healing the internal aspect of myself, honouring what I’ve been through, lowering stress and being authentic (among good nutrition and exercise) I am finally starting to heal. I’m now 30 years old and 60 days off of drugs and alcohol, which hasn’t been easy but it’s been oh so worth it. My health is still day to day, and I barely recognize myself at times, but I can feel a new chapter beginning, and healing taking place. This man is so special, and his book is life changing.

1:20:31 This is exactly me. I was clinically diagnosed at a young age with ADHD and I used to climb trees, building, mountains with no safety ropes. I still do this now as a cyclist; running red lights and weaving through traffic because I never feel more present in my life when I'm in serious danger. I Summited capital peak in Colorado and on the way there, there is a class 4 mile long ridgeline with a tone of exposure, and along this way, there is a section called the knifes edge. 1,000 foot drop on both sides. Most people shimmy across on there butt. I walked the knifes edge and I never felt more present and calm in my hole life. I wish I could respect The doctor more. He catered to all the Pro-Hamas students occupying the grounds of UBC. He falsely sees the Palestinians, not the Israelis as the ultimate victims since October 7th, 2023. Incomprehensible. So shocking.

@@lisbetsoda4874 No one is Pro-Hamas. I'm an orthodox Jew and I support Palestine. The State of Israel is antithetical to the Jewish face and goes against the will of God, as all Jews are to live in exile until the 2nd coming of the Messiah. Zionists took advantage of the fear in the hearts and souls of the Jewish people following WW2 to create their own political kingdom where the religion of Judaism comes 2nd to their own power. Palestine is simply a victim of delusional Zionist leaders who continously use the name of the Jewish faith to justify their atrocities against innocents. All Orthodox Jews, as far as I'm aware, are against the State of Israel and support Palestines sovereignty.

I always said, “There’s two types of people in life both of them get slapped up and what one does to feel better is he slaps everybody else up and what the other person does to feel better is makes sure that everyone else is not getting slapped up”. Gabor is the 2nd example. 💪🏽It’s easy to hurt ppl when you’ve been hurt, in fact, you most likely look forward to hurting someone else. What’s not east it to get hurt, and not hurt everyone else.

People getting married don't need more help, they have plenty going for them if they can afford to get married & have a partner lol, not to say it is a one size fits all way to find happiness. I wish I had someone like Maté in my family, he seems like such a fountain of warmth and empathy - a safe place where one might retreat when feeling overwhelmed. As a Muslim revert I was so touched when he spoke of leaving Zionism; he evidently desired a homeland but purged this yearning for the sake of the Palestinian people when he realised it was at their expense - there will always be a special place in my heart for him because of that. May Allah guide him. ♥️

Every new mother needs to hear the beginning of this. When my 7 y/o was born, I heard “cry it out” method. Today it infuriates me, I didn’t follow that advice. But I did put him to sleep in his crib and he cried endlessly. I held him but I was afraid of baby suffocation and till this day I wish I would have had some type of way to sleep with him. He’s still afraid to sleep alone today, sometimes I wonder.

Aspirin can help ease a headache, but the headache is not caused by a lack of aspirin. In the same way, with the chemical imbalance theory of mental 'illness', ssri drugs may ease the 'symptoms' of the illness, depression say, but it is not the absence of ssri's that caused it. Gabor Mate's work is so important, revolutionary even, and his trauma based take on mental and physical health and wellbeing should be understood by all

I've always felt that I was going against my own gut reaction when it came to raising my own kids. I was blessed with a special girl who is now 20 years old. I only just now realized how wrong society is in how we approach raising and teaching our children. I will now enjoy my children the way God intended us to. Listening to this podcast has reaffirmed my affirmation and although it was not needed, It's great to hear another, especially someone respected, affirm my thoughts. Thank you.
