What do you mean by “the scoreboard looks good”? Just discovered your channel, will be subscribing!
Thanks! For the scoreboard I was referring to the autopilot mode info in the top middle of the PDF - anytime we make a change to the flight plan or bugs we recheck that we are in the proper modes, and that the next desired mode is armed there. For example, if the airplane was leveling off when you changed the altitude bug, it can automatically go into PITCH mode instead of VS or FLC mode that you originally had it in.
Jason TBM thanks! SO important! I do the same in my dual G5/GFC 500 setup!
Mee too!
Typical screwy phrasology of a non pilot with tens of millions of $ that doesn't fly much.
And he says flight level three one oh. Last time I looked the alphabet was not numerical. He needs to use correct terminology and such. Flight level three one ZERO.
Congratulations for selling ForeFlight to Boeing, Mr. Miller. I guess this TBM is the fruit of countless hours of coding...well done, hats off!
Such a beautiful aircraft. Keep the videos coming!!
"JAKE 11" is a four-engined KC-135R tanker with the Air National Guard out of Meridian, MS. Losing an engine in that situation is very different than being in a light twin with four people onboard. I really liked this video, you did a great job filming it!
Thanks again for sharing,, Jason...hoping you and your family are enjoying your long Thanksgiving weekend.
Thanks Jason - great flight very insightful to show the decision making and setup in more details Love Bandit :-) ! Hope you had a great thanksgiving weekend!
Watched from beginning to the end. Awesome Thanksgiving Day flight to SC Jason! I learn some new every time I watch these TBM planes videos. I have to get used to all the terminologies and panel instruments.
Thanks so much!!!
What a beautiful airplane. Thanks for the video.
Hi, great video, you know since the release of the FS2020 Im in love with the powerful TBM, what a great airplane.
Really enjoyable vid. Appreciate all the details especially about how you would have handled an engine emergency.
Cruising at 310 in your own plane is pretty sweet!
yeah, I still have to pinch myself!
31,000 feet is also 6 miles above the ground (9.5 km), assuming the ground is near sea level. :) Just imagine, that altitude is 21 times taller than the empire state building.
Everything is perfect including the plane, your wife, two cute kids and the pet.👍🏻✌🏻😁
It is good that the wife is well versed herself in airplanes and avionics.
Excellent! Thanks for that.
Great video Jason. Wonderful to see your wife so engaged and interested in helping you with CRM. Your narration and explanations as you makes your video most interesting and worth watching.
Very kind, thanks so much!
Amazing video, I loved the explanations the whole way.
Glad to hear it!
That's exactly how I would be spending my money if I were rich.
imagine how cool it would be to say to the family we are going flying today :) so cool
Me too☺️🙏
Interesting about Bandit. Have a rescue Chipoodle that I spoke various names and when she liked the rite one, said, 'That's the One' !!
Great flight, Thanks for the ride and lessons.
that's funny! When I was calling out names I started to think it wasn't going to work, but boy when I said Bandit he perked up dramatically. :)
The fact that you can enjoy a flying trip without all the TSA BS is alone an out of the world experience
Very nice. And, having your wife capable and willing to be SIC is great. If we were all so lucky. My wife rode in the back except occasionally. She preferred to read and leave the flying to me. All in all very cool. I hope it was a very happy Thanksgiving.
Yeah, she has an instrument rating too, so she's right at home!
Thanks for letting us tag along.
Such an amazing machine. Cool video. Thanks.
I'm glad your dog gets to travel first class like the rest of the family. Dogs are man's best friend, and ladies too.
No, just dogs are.🐶🐕
Johnny Rocco Agree!
What an awesome aircraft 👍
Awesome video! Love the TBM
9:03 - 9:15 PREMIE 390GM. I was like WOW 2 of my fav youtubers in the same airspace
Thanks for the ride-along! Happy holidays!
Amazing check video!
Very nice vid! Great family travelling machine!
Thanks, Great Work
what a beautiful bird 😍😍
Damn, that Microsoft Flight Simulator really has good graphics. What settings are you on?
Apparently they are running 8K60fps with two 3090 in SLI.
Must be in VR-mode too! :)
@@PeterBee911 sli still a thing?
@@aarons3611 they still try to sell it for alot of money but most games don't support it enough to be worth the money.
@@JasonFlies Best Wishes to You & Your family...........but Why not Cessna M2 ?????????
Great flying and great video!
Thanks! Was fun to come see you guys as always!
Really nice video, lovely family.
Very nice! thanks for posting
outstanding !
Good teamwork!
Great content! Subscribed! Please keep posting!
Thank you! Will do!
Beautiful plane👍👍
I didn't see this in the comments as far as I read, but the rainbow isn't caused by the shadow of the plane, but can show up at the same time. It's called a 'Glory' or 'Pilot's Glory'. Very cool. Just found your channel and have described. Thanks for sharing this content. 🙂
Impossible to get lost with that avionics package
Epic - thanks for sharing.
Stall speed right at touchdown. Nice.
Lol... :) That isn't typically normal for a landing to get a stall warning, and I don't even fly a plane.
Loved your dog cameo :-)
Thanks! I was surprised when I turned around and he was in my face. :)
Really enjoying your channel sir. I can definitely see you stand out on flight skills. Must have a ton of hours.
Wow, thanks so much!!!
great video...thank you
Nice family flying
Goals! I bet my wife would be great on comms... hopefully my boys would be as well behaved in back 😂
Depends on the mood of the day, could turn around at any moment and see them at each other's throats. That was a good day though! :)
Love Bandit!!!
Nice video!😉
Damn this is a busy cockpit for a GA aircraft.. stresses me out just watching!
That’s my home base you’re flying out of, EDC. It’s a great airport!
Great video. The halo is a Glory.
Ah, THAT's it - thanks!!!
I can't afford a real TBM, or a pilot's license for that matter. The only TBM 930 I love to fly is in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 😁.
You gave me a nice tip regarding the inertial separator which I wasn't aware of... to reduce the temperature on the ITT (which I have no idea what it actually is but it's related to the turbine).
The outside imagery is so peacefully. LOVED THE VIDEO!!!
Happy flying!!!
yeah, some planes have the separator built into the design of the intake - that is one less thing to manage while still keeping junk out of the engine intake but it means you can't turn it off to get more air (and power) in flight.
What a nice plane
That Foreflight is the real star of the show. amazing software. Seems despite all the glass in the panels of these planes you will always see the pilot with the ForeFlight goin on a tablet!
Even with all the glass the app is still so much faster to work with!
@@JasonFlies
I gather it has an emergency IFR panel function? So neat! What makes FF so good? What does it do so well that even the latest Garmin glass doesn't (I see pilots using FF even with new touchscreen Garmin glass)
Super Video
400 knots GS in a single engine turboprop.... technically a "Jet Prop" with those speeds with 1/3 the fuel burn of a jet in the same category! (yes I know there is something branded JetProp for the Piper Malibu).
the coolest couple :)
I didn’t know you had a channel Jason! I was on the trip with you in N182AK for the finer points trip. Wish I could have flown the TBM!
oh, awesome! Such a great trip, was good to meet you there!
The name Bandit reminds me of the old cartoon Johnny Quest
Wow that’s something new to me 😂
Man I love your airplane and your loving family!
Thanks so much!!
I want that airplane! Like bad!
nice! used to live in Rock Thrill....
it is growing fairly quickly!
Family Goals!
Beautiful aircraft. When reading back a clearance like an altitude assignment, it's important to preface it with which "240" you're talking about. Was that a heading, an altitude or an airspeed assignment? "Climb and maintain Flight Level 240" as opposed to simply reading back the number "240". It's in your best interest (and those around you) to ensure you're both talking about the same "240". "Heading 240" "speed 240" "FL240" etc.....cheers!
Yeah, agreed!
Agreed, my man. I don't even do ATC or fly for that matter, and I would be confused if someone said 240, without units. In class, we were taught, never forget units, they give context. :)
I’ve always known the circular rainbow as a “guardian angel”
Hey, that guy looks familiar :D
Ha! Good to hear from you, enjoyed the canyons - wanting to go back NOW!
I’m ready to head back too!
awesome trip man. massive kudos for getting a rescue dog. i assume, since you're operating a tbm, you could have bought a baby unicorn.
You're sounding so much more "happy and tuned in" to your TBM than your very early flights.
Yeah, certainly feel more used to it - especially when I have flown in the last week or so
Jason, I just realized you co founded Foreflight! So freaking cool. Thanks for changing the game for all us pilots!
Very kind! Thanks so much!
@@JasonFlies Would love to connect with you. I fly a Cirrus up to Austin somewhat frequently and would enjoy seeing your plane!
Great video, thanks for sharing
Which software is that, that reads you the checklist? Is it also foreflight?
Yes, that's ForeFlight. I added that feature a few months back - to let it speak your checklist to you. Handy!
Super sweet ride! I really enjoyed the video. I would just be cautious advertising that you departed with an out of date nav database. It’s not illegal in the States but requires extra flight planning to be legal. My deepest apologies if you took those steps and I just missed it in the video!
FAA InFO 17007 states that databases SHOULD be current, but if the database is out of date or will go out of date during the flight, “operators should establish procedures to be conducted prior to flight that ensure the accuracy of the navigation database for the route to be flown.” It goes on to give one example of such a procedure, verifying the nav database against current charts. Compare courses/distances of airways, lat longs of waypoints/navaids, altitude and speed restrictions of SIDs/STARs/IAPs, etc. In your case, ForeFlight could have served as the current charts assuming ForeFlight was up to date. If any discrepancies are noted, the FAA InFO directs pilots to not fly with the expired database. It’s also important to note that “prior to dispatch” means prior to departing. At my last job, the FAA’s recommended procedure was the one we adopted, and it proved to be such a pain in the neck that I personally would rather have delayed departure to get the database up to date rather than go through all that work. The delay would have worked out to be the same amount of time anyways.
It’s also worth noting that ICAO procedures prohibit any flight with an out of date nav database, so if you fly outside of the States and happen to be in this situation again, check the country’s AIP. It’s more likely than not that you would be stuck on the ground until you can update it.
Great notes, thanks! Agreed, not dealing with old (or in this case new + old on different screens) is the way to go. Hoping my next nav data update goes easier.
How noisy is the cabin, during climbout / cruise? Are (noise reduction) headsets essential?
It’s all computer games. But I love it!
Love these, nice video. 400 ground speed, what’s your indicated airspeed? 300?
usually around 190-195
Great video. That's a great airplane! And, we loved Bandit! One question: how come you didn't have synthetic vision? Was it because of the database issues you had?
Exactly, apparently when there is a mis-match for the nav data (I think the PDFs had the newer data) then terrain alerting and SynVis is turned off, plus the flight plan does not auto-sync from the middle MFD to the outer PFDs.
Hey. Realy nice flight. I love the TBM. Can you tell me wich app do you use for checklist and for navigation? Thanks
Sure, that's ForeFlight!
That glide circle is good info. Could have kept Sully out of the Hudson.
Yeah, it's really interesting to see how the shape is affected by wind and terrain too
I think the rainbow around your shadow is called a glory, but I could be wrong.
Thanks!!!
thanks for nice video. just one question.
what’s different between TO mode takeoff and full throttle takeoff?
In my plane TO mode just refers to the pitch reference the command bars and autopilot will follow. The throttle you set yourself. I usually set to about 90% at first since the torque will increase a bit on its own as airspeed, and therefore ram air into the engine, increase.
The round rainbow phenomenon is called a “glory”
Thanks!
In NASA icing documentary the say that when you have a rainbow around airplane shadow there is icing conditions :)
great vid, wished you would have had more of the aircraft's sounds.
Cool, thanks! Check out some of the other videos for that!
Jason does the 5 blade prop have a faster climb and Cruise at flight levels and the inlet turbine Temperature is the most important thing that you have to keep eyes on during those times
Not sure about the 4 blade as I have only flown the 5. Yes, eventually you have to reduce torque in the higher altitudes to avoid ITT temp issues, there is a tick/triangle on the screen that helps you set the proper torque to keep things in check.
Jason - have you checked out Austin Meyer's Xavion product? Seems like it would be a nice add in to foreflight. Your talking about the engine out had me thinking about it.
Yeah, great idea, would be nice to have something like that someday!
nice video in such a good aircraft; you are very lucky; one question, what happened to your TAWS, there is a yellow message " TAWS FAIL"; thanks
That was due to a mismatch in the nav databases, once I rebooted again everything was fixed up
Jason TBM ok great; thanks for Your answer; i m excited to see Your next video, have nice flight 😉
Great video. What is the spoken checklist app on the iPad?
That's ForeFlight's checklist feature...
...and that Sundog would be a Parhelion...just as you were saying...
neat, never knew that name, thanks!
@@JasonFlies ....or a Halo...see a rather rambling and very windy article here..www.researchgate.net/figure/Relatively-rare-sub-parhelion-photographed-below-and-to-the-right-of-the-sun-22-to-the_fig6_238541647
Curious about you using the trim wheel instead of the electric trim on the yoke when you were on final... I’m no TBM driver, but it seems like it would be better to use the switch on the yoke and keep your hand on the power lever?
Yeah, good point. I have tried using the electric trim a few times, but I like the feel and feedback of the analog so much I keep using it. I used to fly a Piper that also had analog flap deployment via a lever and liked that too, for the same reason. :)
Jason TBM I fly a Seminole currently, and it has the good ol Johnson Bar manual flap lever... not a fan haha.
@@dominickatx478 I might just be weird :) I like the bring the flaps in slow, maybe that is part of it
Sounded like the aircraft in emergency was a military KC-135 out of Meridian.
Ah, good info - seems right!
Loved the trip at 400 Kts GS ! Regarding VNAV descent, am I correct that all you had to do was dial in a lower altitude on the PFD and push VNAV button?
Yeah, once the FMS is programmed for it, that’s right
@@JasonFlies Have used that technique in my Cirrus a lot and it seems to work ! Am looking at a M600 now for the increased performance and pressurization. Those cannulas get old really quickly (I live in the Rocky Mountains so I'm using them all the time !) Thanks for the quick response. Hope the flying is going well !
Yeah, huge difference flying a pressurized turbine aircraft vs piston when in the Rockies! I bet you’ll love it.
If you'd be willing to share the information, what I'm about to suggest could be construed as personal, it'd be great if you'd make a detailed video on operating costs. Cover your fixed direct, variable direct, and variable indirect. How many hours a year do you fly? What's the insurance requirements, premiums, what'd they require in order to underwrite you. How much is financed, what's the interest rate, what the monthly payment? How do you budget for maintenance? Do you allocate funds on every flight for overhauls, annuals, phase checks, etc... Are you enrolled in a Socata program...I could go on and on with questions but I suppose you probably see where I'm going with it. That'd be a great video if you could make a detailed, comprehensive video on the in's and out's of aircraft ownership.
Thx Jason for vid is this 930 ? What yr?! Nice panel!!
It's a 900, similar but with NXi avionics
I missed it but how long was the flight?
Wow the TBM comes with Siri.
Top
Which iPhone did you record on? How do you record cockpit audio?
I had a wire that was inline with the headphone jack and then plugged into the lightning port
What do you do for work that allows you to afford to fly privately? Something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.
I'm co-founder of ForeFlight, an aviation software company - I live and breathe aviation. :)
Just subscribed to the channel.
Is that a 930?
It is a 900 that I added the NXi too - so kind of like a 910
Sure beats packing up the family in the Dodge Caravan and driving through the smokies. BTW, is your better half a rated pilot? If not, does she know how to get your aircraft back on the ground in one piece without your assistance?
Yeah, she is instrument rated and my TBM instructor gave her a good lesson on shooting an approach and landing it - really good to have the experience!
@@JasonFlies I ask other pilots who carry their loved ones, the same question. Most of them get annoyed, but admit they are sealing their loved ones fate by not at least teaching them how to get it on the ground.
Excellent video. I thought the video quality was fine. Gotta love youtube trolls.
Thanks for that! I'll keep trying to up my game though :)
