Life Of The Amazonia surprised me. Unboxing, learning the rules, and seeing all the scoring conditions had me scratching my head. Once it hit the table, everything came together. After several plays, it's not just a beautiful game on the table, it's in my top 3. Perseverance pays off!

The game that surprised me was Ship Shape: It's a Smugglers Bounty. My friend bought it after a demo at Gen Con. It seems like a trifle, but it's low rules and high fun! It's become a mainstay at our annual boardgame trip!

I don't get surprised by games much these days because I do a lot of research before making purchases. But, back in the days before we got into the hobby seriously, pleasant surprises included Mysterium and Ex Libris which are still in our rotation today. Pandemic was definitely our FIRST pleasant surprise and introduced us to cooperative games and was a gateway to... more Pandemic - we've probably gotten more out of the Pandemic Legacy, Pandemic Iberia and Star Wars Clone Wars versions than any other games in our collection over time.

My wife avoided Hegemony as long as possible but after one play it immediately entered her top 5!

QotW: Well, I played Honey Buzz last week. I was really expecting it to be a simple family game, perhaps due to the colorful and adorable theme, but it was actually pretty crunchy.

For QotW: I was looking for a nature-themed game but I had forgotten what it was called. In my stubbornness I thought it was called Meadow so I started looking at reviews and rules. We ended up getting it and it was one of our most played games for a while. I had no expectations for it because I just stumbled upon it. Still a great game :)

QotW - "6 nimmt!" surprised me. I don't even remember why I tried it on BoardGameArena. The rulebook didn't impress me but the gameplay turned out too be a lot more hectic-in-a-good-way than anticipated. Having my perfect plan disrupted by the player before me destroying a row just confirms that i am not as clever as i think 🙂
(i probably wouldn't like it if the game ran more than 20 minutes.)

excited for my copy of Deep Shelf. Game looks very cool. I do wish they had commissioned a video for a play thru or how to play

Another Baseball Game Recommendation: APBA makes both baseball and football board games. I played APBA Football years ago which was based on detailed NFL roster stats (starters and subs, each player has a stat card) for various seasons and thought it was quite good. In spite of the detail, it played fairly quickly. (The last time I looked, they also had college teams.) I expect that their baseball game, which is also based on season stats, might be of interest to diehard baseball fans.

have you tried APBA GO online? I was very disappointed. Might be a game for me that only works with physical gameplay interaction.

@@cr-pol I didn't know they had an online game; sorry to hear it was a disappointment. I'm not a baseball fan, so I've only played the physical football game, and that was many years ago. I found it quite enjoyable, and I am considering getting another copy since my original was lost in the intervening years. The football game played smoothly and went relatively quickly for all the details it covered. I assume their baseball game would have a similar level of detail, but I can't be sure.
I'm not sure how APBA's baseball game is modeled, but the football game had some pretty good detail, with each player having a detailed stats card based on the player's real-life performance for that season. One then assigns them to offensive and defensive positions, which gives team ratings. (If an injury occurs, another player is substituted, which affects rating scores.) The defensive player chooses their set, and the offensive player chooses their play for each down. I found it interesting that it covered situations such as if a defensive tackle recovered a fumble, their card was used to see if they managed to run with it or, in rare cases, also fumbled the ball themselves. A baseball game with the same level of detail would be impressive.

Do you have a link for the card shuffler. And does it shuffle sleeved cards.
To answer question about sleeved and actual shuffling.

@soloboardgames I don't have a link handy but I just searched for "manual card shuffler" and there were dozens of listings (for what I suspect is the same item.) Dunno on the sleeved cards - as you may have caught from episode 26... 😉 lol

bridge players use it, give a look at Baron Barclay.
These shufflers are also used by people with hand arthritis problems, give a look to Adaptive Tech Solutions.
