Welcome to Tabletop Toolbox! I'm your host, Jeff, and this channel is all about board and tabletop gaming! While I enjoy most talking about crowdfunding projects involving up-and-coming, new games, I also enjoy talking about games in general - even occasionally digging into fundamental concepts of games, gaming mechanisms, methods, rules, and more - and I do that on my weekly show, "The Weekly Ratchet." I encourage viewer participation on the Weekly Ratchet, so if you're here, join in the fun by adding your voice to the channel! Thanks for joining me here, on Tabletop Toolbox!

THE Last Command - There be Decks-a-Plenty in This Space-Themed, 2-Player Skirmish Game!
I am so sorry to hear about Tinny, Jeff…. They really are part of the family. Our little dog is 17 years old, and we know the inevitable is coming soon. I guess I’m comforted by the knowledge that we have given her a loving home, and that every day we have with her is precious. I shelve my games both ways. 😊 It depends on the game. Some are simply components in baggies, so they are fine standing up, but others would end up a nightmare of jumbled parts; so they get the horizontal treatment.
Sorry to hear about Tinny, Jeff, they give us so much as companions and the goodbye days are the hardest. I know there will never be another Tinny but when you are ready new souls give us something new and unique. Hope you can work through this period okay, can fully understand the mental reluctance and we will be here when you are ready :-)
QofW - We do both. Most are vertically, but some get a little too disheveled for my liking if we store them vertically, so they are put horizontally. Recently, as we have begun to run out of shelf space, I have begun to rearrange similar smaller sizes (Carcassonne size box, for example) horizontally to allow more boxes to fit on a shelf. (Greg hates it! He votes vertical all the way)
Very sorry to hear about Tinwald. =( But it was very heartwarming to hear and see pictures of the good times spent together. Those little four legged furballs really are companions for life. A quote I've heard that seems to ring true (at least for me), "The difference between friends and pets is that friends we allow into our company, pets we allow into our solitude." And lastly, no amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat. And no amount of masking tape can ever totally remove his fur from your couch. He'll always be around in one form or another. Take care of yourself Jeff.
@@yellolao I love those - thank you!
Sorry for the loss of your friend :( For QotW: The right way is horizontally. Only in exceptional circumstances (such as lack of shelf space) a board game box may be squeezed vertically beside other horizontal boxes. Also my small games are stuffed into a drawer haphazardly so that I can shut the drawer :)
Mostly vertical to make it easier to take games out and put them back. And, I like the "bookshelf" aesthetic. But, there's some horizontal games to fill in spaces here and there, and for some sections of games we don't play much or at all any more (but keep for sentimental reasons).
I stack both ways, depends on the game(s) and its contents. Some games, like Cthulhu DMD, I stack horizontal because I will typically pull the entire stack at once so horizontal is just easier for that. Also, sometimes the game doesnt have the best insert or organization and vertical would mess it all up. Other times, vertical is just easier to get a game out.
So very sorry for your loss Jeff!
wiht the kallax i stack them how ever i can fit the most bits in, verticle is preferred but just not functional at all times. i tend to stack the narrower games vertically.
I stack my games correctly, although I do put some games vertically in front of a stack of horizontal games to enjoy the cover art.
Sorry for the loss of your pet, Jeff. They leave us far too soon. Too bad the Anno 1800 exp. is not coming to us in English. I really like it.
Losing a best friend is probably the lowest feeling ever. We continue to make it through by seeing Google randomly bring up collages and Memories based on our past pooches. Having the memories, especially the ones you lovingly shared with us, are the way you survive times like this. Hang in there and play with the ones who want to fill in the space left behind. They know you need it.
QotW: I mix it up, both vertically and horizontally. Games in shrink tend to stay horizontal since I don't need to worry about components shifting. I have 2 or 3 gorgeous covers (Amazonia, Santa's Workshop, Destinies) are vertical and front facing. 90% are horizontal.
QotW - i go both ways.
Mostly vertical, but there are definitely games with inserts that do not want to be put on their sides. Have you ever had someone at a game meetup grab one of these games, then flip it upside down to read the back? Oh, what fun!
Having lost our two cats during the pandemic I know how hard that can be, took a few years for us to move beyond it and we just in the last month got two new kittens. Know sharing was hard but hope it helped, and so glad that you little guy found his human and had a happy long life.
Also the answer for me is vertical allows you easier access to the games, but just like with gaming how you like, store how you like.
Oh man losing pets during the Pandemic must have been the worst. I'm so sorry!!!
Losing your familiar is tough...
So sorry for your loss! I truly appreciate you sharing your story about Tinny. I had a similar experience with a cat that adopted our family when we moved into a new house and then passed right before we moved out. A cherished friend! For #QOTW, I used to store all horizontal, but I have started storing some games vertically because it's more space efficient with my current shelf setup. I try to only go vertical with games where the components won't get discombobulated.
must have missed your PnP Q, i recently found an amazing PnP version of Glory to Rome, i'd printed it before at printer studio using some files I came across and a project, and recently found someone that traded me their PnP version of the game that is amazing. comes in shrink wrap and everything
Welcome back! Sorry to hear about Tinny!
I disagree with some of your complaint but primarily because many of them lacking explanation. You say the game is unbalanced but you don't explain in which ways and by how much. To a certain extent all games are unbalanced, even chess where been the first player matter. Is it the factions abilities, the ships upgrades, some tracks been too good that made you feel that way? I also don't believe a game with a lot of asymmetry can be perfectly balanced, so the margin by which it is is unbalanced is very important. Your comment about a whole fleet been decimated by a single ship and getting frustrated is you not admitting you've made a in-game bad decision. In this game, you should most of the time not commit more than 1 ship to a battle if it is going to put you in a bad place. Plus combat with dices will always have this kind of situation happening. You can play Risk and have a small army stomping a much larger one because the small army guy was lucky. You knew going into the game, even when backing the game in the first place, that Andromeda's Edge was this kind of game. Your comment on the rules changing too much is a valid point but I see it as the same for many complex games. When I play Ark Nova, I can't remember everything my other 3 friends cards does and what they can trigger on their board at which time. These types of game have too much going on for that type of approach, you are better playing to reactively and tactically than sticking to a strategy and trying to calculate every possibilities. Only with repeated plays you can make calculation and following everything something possible. Also your complaint about the game having nothing that matter in the end other than the tracks is also not clear to me. This is like complaining that in Twilight Imperium nothing else matter other than scoring objectives. All the game is offering you is the possibilities to progress in different manners to find your own way on top of the other players in scoring points. In fact the tracks are the main course to score points but every games that are not point salad work like this. The way you spoke about the development too made it seems like you don't understand how powerful they are. They are basically a extra indestructible ship for every surrounding battles (including its own area). When you build a development you forgot to mention that you also go up in a track and score up to 10 points based on the surrounding leaders of all players.
great review, sorry fanboys
Epochs look like the game in my dreams: Simpler Through the Ages with an explorable map... And I just got civ new dawn too...
I've been Rickrolled!
Firstly been there done that too with no man's sky, some hours of my life disappeared into the proverbial black hole never to be seen again. And a few red eye trips to work! QOTW - Going to be a little bland here and say ditto to you! I have downloaded and printed and played a few but the majority I have aspirations to do up nicely, see lots of good looking ones and want to add 3D printed bits but they just end up sitting in a folder on my computer and never see light of the day. I remember printing out Depp Space D6 as one of my first that got me intrigued, using card, sleeving etc. But never really played much beyond that. PNP Hideaway on FB and top 50 PNP on BGG are good sources of games.
I really like print-and-play games! What I like about them: Low cost of entry. Not much of an investment lost if the game is a stinker or you want to try a new mechanic that you are unsure about. Ability to customize the physical game elements (to a point). If the game pieces get wrecked, print a new one! The ability to fully play a game before buying the 'official' physical copy if available.
For QotW: I have tried a few print-and-play card games because you basically need some card sleeves, any regular cards and printed cards for the game. The one that comes to mind is Stew. Also I have printed and laminated fan-made player boards for some games and fan-made campaigns for some games (e.g. Wingspan and Everdell).
Now you know the secret sauce for more views. It's Mike, Dan and Jeff (not necessary in that order) in one place :)
Any Print & Plays I have attempted, I take the PDFs and make a Tabletop Simulator mod out of them. Way less fuss and printing. All the components you need are already in TTS. "Bargain Basement Bathysphere" is a good example. Your "Bad News" title scared me for a moment! I thought to myself, "Don't pack it in! You just got to 1,000 subscribers!" Whew!
i really liked the builders and biomes Minecraft game I thought it was fun, there is another dungeon Minecraft game. i really enjoyed it.
I haven’t tried any print and plays yet. I have so many games I need to play already… But this could be a whole new area of gaming that I could potentially love! 😊 I’m still waiting for my copy of Tidal Blades 2 to arrive. So excited…
Couldn't game for the last 2 weeks as I got surgery on my left hand. Definitely chomping at the bit to get some gaming in. I think the only thing I got in the past 2 weeks was the extra faction from Deep Shelf that was KS exclusive from their webstore, the standees for Stationfall and I re-purchased the KS all-in for Distilled because I sold mine and still love the game. Quiet times for KS right now. Oh I did get my Unconscious Mind, but haven't obviously played it. I have bought one PNP game, Roll Estate which was like Monopoly this Dice Game. While I enjoyed that game, I am just not interested in DIY gaming. I like the big boxes and stuff and the order of my shelves. I am glad it all exists though. Tidal Blades 2 looks pretty, I am just not sure if I need it. Does it stand out from a gameplay perspective? I mean does this offer something that similar games don't offer? My group is lousy for campaign games, so I am always hesitant to invest in another.
I like ___ and write print and play games. A PnP game with cards and card backs does not interest me. Congratulations on >1000 subscribers!
Never tried PnP. I might be willing to do it to play test a game, because being able to offer feedback in the design process would be the trade-off for lackluster components.
I've never played a Print-n-Play-only game. I download and print a lot of content for boardgames (ty BGG files!), and recently I had the chance to playtest an expansion for a game I own with the new content being print-n-play, so printing/building content as part of the gameplay experience doesn't turn me off. I just haven't found a print-n-play-only game that I think I'd like to try. I've checked many out, but nothing yet. Maybe there'll be some good recommendations in the comments here.
Commenting now before I forget (again). I have about 30 PNP games. My rules are 1) Cards only or minimal BYO components, 2) No more than a few sheets of paper, 3) Soloable since noone else in my group else likes them. They can have a lot of bang for the buck, easy to table, and don't take up much space.
Apparently we have started thinking a lot alike! I backed Theme Park Mania (arrived today) AND Hamlet by the Lake too! Haven’t opened either one yet either…. Been a busy week!
Never have tried a P&P. I *think* I'd like to try them, but I have a hard enough time getting commercially-made games to the table.
New games for me these last two to four weeks: Flip 7, Fateforge: Chronicles of Kaan (what was I thinking), Trekking the World (2nd Edition), Path of Civilization, Blast Track!, River Valley Glassworks.
I like the idea of a BTS video
nice overview thanks
Played and enjoyed this and it was an easy back.

The artwork is really nice!
Thank you! Our artist, Gary, has done a great job with it.
My wife avoided Hegemony as long as possible but after one play it immediately entered her top 5!
Nice unboxing
QotW - "6 nimmt!" surprised me. I don't even remember why I tried it on BoardGameArena. The rulebook didn't impress me but the gameplay turned out too be a lot more hectic-in-a-good-way than anticipated. Having my perfect plan disrupted by the player before me destroying a row just confirms that i am not as clever as i think 🙂 (i probably wouldn't like it if the game ran more than 20 minutes.)
I have to say of all the games I have seen, I would much rather go out and throw actual plastic.
Great video thanks!
Life Of The Amazonia surprised me. Unboxing, learning the rules, and seeing all the scoring conditions had me scratching my head. Once it hit the table, everything came together. After several plays, it's not just a beautiful game on the table, it's in my top 3. Perseverance pays off!
