  • The Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class are two legendary off-roaders that compete for a similar slice of the market. Despite their considerable difference in pricing and marketing, these vehicles captivate enthusiasts with their unique appeal. While many comparisons are based on personal feelings and numbers on paper, a comprehensive evaluation of their performance is essential.
    Unveiling the Similarities and Differences:
Both the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class share a Bauhaus styling and unparalleled off-road capability. However, they diverge significantly in price and luxury. The Defender targets those who prioritize function, usability, and adventure, while the G-Wagen, particularly the G 63, attracts affluent buyers seeking extreme performance and premium comfort.
    A Personal Journey:
As a die-hard fan of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, my expectations were challenged when I had the opportunity to drive various engine and trim combinations of both models. The conclusion I arrived at was unexpectedly different. Now, let's delve into a detailed analysis of each vehicle.
    Mercedes-Benz G-Class:
The current generation of the G-Wagen, introduced just a year before the latest Land Rover Defender, retains a quasi-identical exterior design to its predecessor. The most significant changes include an independent suspension, modern safety features, and a switch from recirculating-ball to electrically assisted rack-and-pinion steering. The top-of-the-range AMG G 63 is propelled by a monstrous twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 engine, delivering unparalleled power and torque.
While the G-Class excels in off-road performance and luxury, it falls short in practicality. Its larger dimensions and limited turning circle make city driving and parking challenging. The steering can feel cumbersome, and the unique body shape affects the driving experience, creating a sensation akin to steering a boat. Additionally, the spare wheel, although not full-size, presents limitations and compromises.
    Land Rover Defender:
Unlike its predecessor, the current Land Rover Defender is built on a unibody platform, sharing components with other Range Rover models. It offers two locking differentials, adjustable ground clearance, and air suspension. The Defender's smaller turning circle, spacious interior, and practical features, including functional options like a fridge, air compressor, retractable side steps, and even a tent, enhance its versatility.
While the Defender may lose in drag races against the G 63 and has some minor build quality differences, it excels as a daily off-roader and a capable on-road SUV. It strikes a balance between sportiness and functionality, providing a more comfortable and practical driving experience.
    Conclusion:
The battle between the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class is fierce, with each vehicle possessing its strengths and weaknesses. The G-Class dominates with its luxury, power, and heritage, while the Defender impresses with its practicality, versatility, and impressive off-road capabilities. Ultimately, the choice between these two iconic off-roaders comes down to personal preferences and priorities. Whether one prefers the G-Wagen's opulence or the Defender's functionality, both vehicles offer an exhilarating and unforgettable driving experience.

Defender 90 is gonna be better at off-road, cause of a shorter wheel base..shorter car in total ..lighter ...better turning radius 😂
