    I fully agree that we should not aim for expensive equipment to shoot in 4K. in fact make the awesome video and minifilm possible with the cheapest equipment. important to remember that the movie is not in the 4K cameras but in the soul

    Totally agree with your comments on audio and lighting.
    A small amount of money invested there can make a far greater difference than spending big buckets of money on camera upgrades.

    I cannot express how happy I am that I found this video. For a really long time I was wondering whether people would do two takes to get different angles or if it was possible that you could simply use two cameras. You have quenched my thirst for knowledge. Thanks so much omg

    My favorite part about your videos is that you don't just throw a bunch of equipment at me and make me feel that I have to have it. When teachers throw a bunch of gear at people without explaining it confuses students. You let your viewers know that they can still move forward with or without spending lots and lots of money. Real genuine AWESOMENESS!!!!!

    Good messages. Two cameras makes lots of sense. I just did a little vacation and found two very valuable. Another benefit is that one can be used for time-lapse while you use the other one.

    Very good point! I buy camera's second hand or on ebay. Tell your viewers how to sync the cameras. Make sure you cover importing and editing clips.

  • @Drewmnet
    @Drewmnet 10 лет назад +1

    I've used two cameras in the past (mine and a friends), to shoot a short film, and I totally agree with your points. We would use both cameras during dialogue, not to catch both sides of the conversation, but to have two angles (medium shot and close up) on each person. That way we could have more choices in editing. Also having a second camera for you to shoot B-Roll is great, so that while the main footage is being shot, there can be another camera getting interesting cutaways for that scene.

    Very interesting thoughts on a topic that is not often covered. The Cyberlink PowerDirector software is very good for this as it uses the "good" sound recorded separately and the sound from any cameras used to sync the whole lot together. Traditionally low budget film makers have avoided 2 cameras because of the cost of film (and indeed cameras) but we are at the point now where one could even consider using even more.

  • @zy_cheng
    @zy_cheng 10 лет назад +6

    First of all, congrats on hitting 5k subs! Using two cameras really widened the possibilities to filmmaking for me. I used to have a T4i as my main camera, then I decided i needed an upgrade (T4i wasn't that exciting for stills, which i do occasionally). So i upgraded to the 70D, but didn't bother to sell the T4i cuz the resale value was just crap. So I ended up with two cameras. I'm so glad I didnt sell the T4i.
    However I once left the B cam running on a tripod during a wedding, (I didnt have enough crew, so the B cam was unmanned and I was on my own with the A cam) and it tends to give me the "movie recording has stopped automatically" error, despite I was using SanDisk Ultra class 10's. Have you ever run into this issue?

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  10 лет назад

      Thanks!
      Ah yes, that's right, the 70D does have major improvements in the stills department, that a fair point.
      Yes, I've had this exact problem with my T3i! It seems that for some reason the "Ultra" isn't fast enough, you actually need the "Extreme" 45MB/s. I was having problems with longer recordings until I switched to the Extremes.

    • @zy_cheng
      @zy_cheng 10 лет назад

      DSLRguide Wow, I see! I suppose it's something to do with the camera's buffer, because i rarely have this problem with the 70D (maybe 2-3 times). Extremes are quite a bit more pricey than the Ultras! But ah well, at least its not as bad as CF cards...haha

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  10 лет назад

      ZY Productions Yeah I think you're right, it's very similar to the effect of the burst mode for stills gradually stopping as you take more shots. Exactly, compared to other cameras, the DSLRs have really nice cheap cards! And the price keeps going down.

    • @TrussellGiles
      @TrussellGiles 10 лет назад

      DSLRguide It could very well be in part to what type of SD card is being used. Although, I use a T3i, and in my experience and research, the recording shuts off anywhere from 10-15 minutes into recording so the sensor won't overheat. It's a safety mechanism with many DSLR's.

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  10 лет назад +4

      That's completely true, mine cuts out at 12minutes no matter what card I use. But the issue with the sandisk *ultras* usually stops recording after a few minutes.
      Get the most out of the T3i or any other DSLR by using the Extreme cards, never ultras!

    I just did this. I originally wanted to upgrade to a better camera. In the past I've sold the old camera put the extra money and got an up[graded better camera. But this guy is right for what is usually a not that much better camera you'll pay at least twice as much as the old one is worth second hand. So I decided on this occasion to get another camera the same as the one I already had, a Sony A6300. It's 4K has great AF it's light and they're reasonably cheap at around £400 each. I got a kit lens for an extra £100 and a cheap tripod. I wish I'd done this years ago. Now I want a third.

    Buy a used upper entry level DSLR from a couple of years ago as a second camera.
    You can find usable ones like D5200 bodies sometimes for as little as 180€ on eBay, and they still have great sensors. (Of course, only 1080p30 recording, clean HDMI and stills, but it's enough)
    Also, the further down you buy, the less the shutters tend to be used as private people don't use their cameras on a regular basis - finding ca. 5000-15000 shots (out of the rated 150000) is quite common.

    There are a lot of merits to using two cameras to shoot things like events and interviews. However, one good camera angle beats out two crappy camera angles any day. I used to edit weddings and I saw all too often filmmakers trying to do too much, which prevented them from getting the shoots that were needed to tell the story.

  • @SymonSaysTV

    I shot an entier film with 2 cameras and I really liked it. It goes faster and you have more options, but you also need a bigger crew and more equipment like you said. My advice will be; make sure to have 2 compatible cameras. I shot with my 60D and a 5D from another guy involved in the project, but the difference in the footage is quite significant due to the difference of sensor. So be aware. And don't forget to set both cameras the same. Apparently my 2 cameramen didn't know much about it.

    • @skakdosmer
      @skakdosmer 8 лет назад

      +isonemancrew Pine All Canon APS-C cameras will fit your lenses. That means all the Rebels and Eos 60D, 70D, 80D, 7D, 7D mrkII and probably several more.
      I too have the Rebel T2i (or Eos 550D, as it is named in Europe), plus an Eos 70D that I am absolutely loving! Now Simon Cade thinks that the 70D is only a little better than the Rebel T3i, but I think that must be because he hasn't got the 70D. Especially for video it is much better than any other DSLR except perhaps the new Eos 80D. The focusing is fantastic, especially with the new STM lenses. It is a bit expensive I know, and I agree with Simon that you shouldn't spend too much money on cameras. But I have to say: I love my 70D!
      Only drawback (apart from the price): It drains the batteries pretty quickly if you do a lot of video, and an extra original Canon battery is insanely expensive ($120 last time I looked), so instead I've bought a very good Chinese battery grip that cost less. It takes 6 AA batteries.

      David Schaber well, as long as the color-grading and settings are the same, non-filmmakers shouldn't be able to tell the difference - granted, if you're shooting with another dslr

    Hey simon, awesome video. Listen I got a canon7d already, so what's a good second camera can I get that's equal and half the price? Would a t3i be fine? Thanks and great vid.ttysoon.

      T3i is what I shoot with, and I think they are great! You'll notice that the build quality isn't as solid as your 7D, but the image is identical! No problem.

    How do you mount 15mm rods for a follow focus without using a shoulder rig? Thanks!

      Something like this will do the trick: www.amazon.com/EzFoto-System-Plate-Supports-Follow/dp/B005HTMYTO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1405549510&sr=8-2&keywords=15mm+rod+base

    Hi.
    I'm considering to buy a new camera soon.
    I think i might have narrowed it down to 3 different cameras.
    Which one would you say is the better one, for video mode ENTIRELY, no pictures.
    Canon 600d, 60d or Panasonic gh3?
    Thanks in advance and grats on 5k.

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  10 лет назад

      I would say 600D, because it is the cheapest, you can use the money saved to buy audio and lighting equipment (the most important thing).

      DSLRguide Alright. Doing some more research, i have found that i could buy a Panasonic GH2 and then use a hack, to improve it a ton? What do you think of this? Oh and i can get the Panasonic GH2 for 300$.

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  10 лет назад

      34alexsus From what I've heard, the hacked GH2 is basically the same as the GH3. And $300 is a great deal! In that case I'd probably go for the GH2!

    I have a T3i, two Sony point and shoots, and a JVC camcorder, so I am set for filming with multiple cameras, but the problem I have with this is that on my T3i, I have the settings for video set for a cinematic look (low saturation, low contrast) that are not available on my other cameras. Also, the other cameras do not have a shallow depth of field like my T3i.
    How to you compensate for the differences in cameras?

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  10 лет назад

      You've got a whole arsenal! I'd say that a little color correction would go a long way, but other than that you won't be able to get the same image out of the cheaper cameras. A combination of working to the cameras strengths (ie don't shoot in lowlight with the cheaper cameras, and shoot your shallow depth of field shots on the T3i) and some light color correction is all you can do really.
      Do you have access to any software with color adjustment? (anything more than contrast and saturation will do it!)

      Perhaps I can edit the video effects in my movie maker. Otherwise, I will look into other video editors.
      Thanks!

    I'd noticed that most filmmakers prefer canon dslrs and most photographers prefer nikon dslrs.... Why is that?

    • @josephmunroe2995
      @josephmunroe2995 8 лет назад

      Canon are popular, but Nikon have a better cmos and dynamic range in low light, Chip for chip Nikon wins hands down.

    • @garrettcooper7966
      @garrettcooper7966 8 лет назад

      +J Munroe For filmmaking, I would argue otherwise. Canon DSLRs shoot progressive video while the Nikons of the past shoot interlaced video. (If you don't know the difference, just Google it) I think that reputation has stuck with Nikon and that's why most filmmakers prefer Canon. Also, there is no Magic Lantern for Nikons, that would be a huge drawback for me, if I were buying. I think Nikon makes wonderful cameras and if I was a photographer, I'd probably go with a Nikon because of the dynamic range, but I'm not, so I'll go with Canon all the way.

      suvradip dutta But 700d has continuous autofocus, now the best continuous auto-focus, not by a long shot but it does have it.

      I second the Panasonic G7. There is no better value, particularly when it is on sale. I have a 750D and it definitely has capabilities the G7 doesn't but if I had to only keep one of them I'd have to pick the G7. Canon still hasn't given Rebel DSLRs anything more than 1080@30p and 720@60p. The G7 is less money and has 4K@30p and also has advanced features like manual focus peaking which you have to buy a $1400+ Canon DSLR to get.
