Wow! You really got it all together. I notice the quality of your lighting in this video and others I have seen from you is excellent. I can tell you know how to manage light ratios.Excellent.
7:42 you wanna make sure everything gets sandbag straight away so you don't have any falling over of equipment. Now the next thing we have .... **reflectors jumping around** ROFL
+alexashapiro I'm thinking about upgrading some time in the next two years.. at the moment either C100, BMPCC or Panasonic GH4k. and a follow focus is somewhere near the bottom of my wishlist, I think it would slow me down when changing lenses..
C100 isn't that great, it's avchd and can't even do 60p/50p (come on canon my a65 can do that, and auto focus too), unless you plan on getting that cool recorder monitor (ninja blade or something?) to me the bmpc4k looks like the best choice but it has obvious problems too (battery, unable to format cards in camera I think too)
I have fallen absolutely in love with filmmaking and the science around it, due to channels like yours, film riot et al. I have no base and no equipment as of now but want to start off. Can you suggest me what camera I should start off with and a few other basic essentials( if needed), to make a primitive 10 min short film maybe. TIA and keep rocking :)
Just found your channel today and I'm really enjoying all of the content on your channel! Working on my own filmmaking and your channel is very helpful! You got my subscription! :)
Hey bro, you are doing a good job and thanks for your tips, please can you do a video on how you put all the components with the rods together to form the video camera. i love the set up, i am new and i want to get something like yours.

What was attached to your Zoom H1 to make it stand up like that? Great video! You got some great lighting and sound that’s given me a lot of good ideas as to what I should be investing in!!
+DSLRguide get a GH4 or a G7 with a metabones speed booster, especially with the G7 ( more cheap ), you will be good for many years to come like the T3i.
Yeah, I agree about always using sandbags, from personal experience. Once when i was on set a light stand fell over with a 10 pound strobe on it and it fell directly onto my head, I had to go to the hospital and I almost had a concussion
..ouch! yeah it really is essential: people getting hurt, damaged equipment, could even get sued.. certainly worth taking the time to make sure everything is safe.
You have a very nice setup there. You forgot to show us your manfrotto monopod! Haha! Really impressed by all your lighting gear seeing that light and composition is essential in film. How are you liking the videomic into the zoom h1? I might get a zoom to plug my video mic in. However the video mic isn't that bad for me, certainly if I can turn AGC off with ML.
Thanks! Yes, I meant to add some text to explain that.. Totally agree about lighting, exactly! Videomic into the zoom H1 is totally worth it. Considerably better than video mic into the camera. If I were you that'd be the next thing on my list.
Hi Cade , This is Abhi i just love your vids n the way you express your views i have some questions in my mind that how you carry your equipments while shooting ? ovio its bag but how ?...do you call your friends or you carry all by yourself ? do you run your production by yourself only ?
XAVC is a recording format designed by Sony that uses level 5.2 of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, which is the highest level supported by that video standard.XAVC can record 4K resolution at 60 fps with 4:2:2 chroma subsampling at 600 Mbit/s..Canon and Nikon DSLRs use H.264 video wrapped in QuickTime MOV containers as the native recording format. rigging DLSRs can end up being expensive and a lot of throw away. consider Sony FS7 and get REAL
Hi Simon, I think your videos are great and I learn very much thinks from you. But at one thing I disagree, the lighting. I use for my videos softboxes (in Dutch we call it softboxen) they give sun based light and they have a frost filter in front so that you can use the light loose law to it. What are your thoughts about these softboxes? Greets from the Netherlands
EmptyLose soft boxes are nice, although a bit bulky and slow to put together. I prefer to rig up diffusion in front of the lights which has a very similar effect
I know this is an old video (Also I've seen this like 5 times :) ) but is it just me or does it look highly ungraded like you shot flat and didnt bother to grade it?
+Philippos Slicher back at this point I used to try and hold all of the shadow detail because I thought it improved the dynamic range.. looking back I think it's a really nasty look, these days I grade things a lot more 'punchy' and contrasted
Haha that's so rare to see you laugh :D I'm really enjoying your videos, I'm watching all of them :) Thank you for making these ! ( sorry for english, french you know... )
Where do you store all your gear and how do you transport your gear? I know that you store all your gear in camera bags and foam cases but where do you store your gear when you are not using it? I'm running out of room in my closet for my equipment and if I go to college and live in a dorm or move in a small apartment. I may not have enough room for my equipment. I was thinking of purchasing some lighting gear but they take up a lot of space. When ever you are on a video shoot do you bring all your equipment with you or does it depend on the project? And do you usually have people help carry your equipment?
I store it stacked up in my bedroom. I have an old suitcase which I put lighting stuff in, and a pile of light stands on the floor. Just put it wherever you can find space! I often will go to a filmshoot with just one backpack of equipment so it's really easy to transport / carry. For bigger shoots I have to get a ride with someone else who is going, and pack it into a car, before finding somewhere safe I can leave stuff while filming.
I have a 47 inch bounce and when I'm at a shoot I like to take it out of the case and tell them to catch it. So when I throw it in the air it pops up and scares them.
Haha, I put a monopod on my bunk bed, and then used a weight to stop it from falling.. that way it's like a boom pole over my head, but with a small camera (canon ixus 220) instead of a mic. I'd like to sort out a way to mount a larger camera though..
I know you have a Zoom H1, but would you consider getting a Tascam DR-05? Would you recommend one over the other, or does it really just not matter? Thanks.
7:50 hahaha Simon is smiling, I never saw him smiling before xD
As a begginer producer, this was very informative to assess what is essencial and what was I overlooking, thank you!
that reflector explosion scared the crap out of me!!! lol good one
You put out this video 7 years ago and it it's still relevant. Good job young man.
The best part of the video is at 7:53
:D
Jep
accidentally opened this link from forever ago and I'm back with DLSR guide, man this takes me back, you taught me so much.
I'm so glad to hear that, thanks bud :)
I really like that shoulder rig for that setup. Small yet effective. Going to look through your videos to see if you have anymore on it.
Bear in mind that if you get a GH4, you'll have to buy new lenses too, as it has a MFT mount rather than an EF mount.
I would say C100 myself, probably becasue I've been brain washed by Film Riot but they make a really good case for it.
C100 isn't that great, it's avchd and can't even do 60p/50p (come on canon my a65 can do that, and auto focus too), unless you plan on getting that cool recorder monitor (ninja blade or something?) to me the bmpc4k looks like the best choice but it has obvious problems too (battery, unable to format cards in camera I think too)
***** Some of the smaller features like ISO on the C100 beat the hell out of the Black Magic so the C100 is far ssuperiorlow light.
+drsamtam He can get a speedbooster
watched this old video and was so excited to see the links you have on your website to buy the gear. You are literally the best
Very nice! I enjoyed learning about the equipment you have and use! Keep up the great work! I'm looking forward to seeing your future videos!
So i was on set, but didnt have a camera, keffertape didnt solve it :(
Really Tcool Video. I Enjoy Seeing the reflectors Explode!!! Lol
Your voice, so calming.
Great guide, I'm just learning the ropes and it was an informative walkthrough. Thank you for the video.
The reflector explosions made me laugh! (great videos, btw--really enjoying them)!
Oh man, i cried and died a couple of times when those reflectors "exploded" lol, the funniest bloopers
I have fallen absolutely in love with filmmaking and the science around it, due to channels like yours, film riot et al. I have no base and no equipment as of now but want to start off. 7:50 i was tired so i was sorta zoning out just listening and that shit me up lmao
Good job! You can see the boom mic above your head
Your gear is where I need to be. So lighting, sound, camera. Are those the three groups of filmmaking basically?
Nice. Looks like you have all the gear you need for film making in your kit.
very helpful. thank you very much. I plan on purchasing all of this over the course of the next few months.
I fell a sleep during this video...
Best nap ever!
Reflector Explosion !!!!! Great Lesson all along......
Super useful and comprehensive!
You're squeezing all the juice outta the Tri great video 👍

Hey , You are really a GURU. I am learning from your video class. Hope to meet you one day. I want to make film.
I always enjoy your videos, great job.
I really like your rig!
7:52 The greatest moment of the channel!!!!!! Hahahahaha!!!!!
This guy is the one who got me in filming thats why my parents bought me a 1300d
Great vídeo! Thank you!

Agreed
Your recent videos have changed a lot

DSLRguide Considering buying the Zoom H1 for my videos. DO you know if you can mount it to a tripod and/or camera via cold shoe?
Frenzy Films yes, it has a tripod mount (1/4 20 tapped hole) on the bottom. You can buy a very cheap adapter to use it on a cold shoe.
Thanks
Awesome gear! If you were to add up what was in this video how much do you think it would be?
I'm really enjoying your videos, mate! :)
I lol'd at the reflectors haha. I know your pain! Softboxes can be as annoying too (and are more annoying to fold).
Are you planning on entering the rode reel competition? Thanks for the video by the way :)
i don't think so, I've got too many other projects to finish before my exams this summer!
Nicely done young man!
did you go to film school you have a alot of useful information
Hi Cade , This is Abhi
i just love your vids n the way you express your views
i have some questions in my mind that how you carry your equipments while shooting ? ovio its bag but how ?...do you call your friends or you carry all by yourself ?
do you run your production by yourself only ?
You really out did yourself this time Simon.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Pretty cool. Nice video
+DSLRguide i couldn't find the flare shield thing in the list. Mind putting the link here? thanks!
how long will it take for you to pack them all neat and tidy again? thank you for this video.
13:20 made my day aha
why
I love you info, thank you much
Can you make a list of items you absolutely need to shoot a short film? Thanks!
Well a camera and a computer to start

Thyanks for your video. Its healpfull. Please write down the brand name & details of your gears.
you'll find all of those details right here: dslrguide.tv/mygear
what's the best setup as a beginner filmmaker??

HI, what kind of portable battery do you use in your camera? I'm really interetested in buying one for my T3i, thanks!
juaco06 if you go here: dslrguide.tv/accessories/ and look for 'portable lanparte battery' then you'll find it!
I know this is an old video (Also I've seen this like 5 times :) ) but is it just me or does it look highly ungraded like you shot flat and didnt bother to grade it?

DSLRguide Yeah the shadows are really...interesting....I know how you grade now as I'm a long time viewer, and I watch your current stuff
Haha that's so rare to see you laugh :D
I'm really enjoying your videos, I'm watching all of them :)
Thank you for making these !
( sorry for english, french you know... )
thank you for your kind comment - i'm glad you're enjoying the show!
how do you carry all of this things around? :P and how many people help you? Nice video btw :D
In college I was trained to use a light meter that measured in foot candles. Is lux more commonly used in the uk?
I think it's more of an LED thing, but I could be wrong. LUX is the measurement the manufacturers use with LEDs, even outside the UK.

7:53 scared the shit out of me!
Your smile is awesome!
....And now, the reflec... ( BOOM ) hahahaha LOL
where do you get the money to fund this stuff?
+Salvatore P back then I used to have two small jobs delivering newspapers, and would do occasional freelance jobs making videos for small businesses.
Where did you get the production equipment to do the freelance work?
+Jory Stultz _"two small jobs delivering newspapers"_
that reflector just scared the shit out of me
I have a 47 inch bounce and when I'm at a shoot I like to take it out of the case and tell them to catch it. So when I throw it in the air it pops up and scares them.
Nice job!
Great advice
I’m pretty sure he used the 40mm in his camera so he could show his other lenses, and is why you could see the mic and part of the wall on the rigjt
nice he uses the programs I use! :)
Hey if your shooting outside and your using lighting and u have no outlets what do u do? Plz answer:)
-love the vids:))))
when outdoors, it's much better to subtract light instead of adding it! check this out: stillmotionblog.com/outside-with-modifiers/
Thank you
Great gear! I just would like to know what kind of films you make that allow you to buy all this gear!
promotional videos for small businesses mostly!
Wow! That is great. Congrats on your success.
Also, (sorry for 3 comments) I've always loved overhead shots, but haven't found a great way to achieve it. How did you go about doing it? :)
Haha, I put a monopod on my bunk bed, and then used a weight to stop it from falling.. that way it's like a boom pole over my head, but with a small camera (canon ixus 220) instead of a mic. I'd like to sort out a way to mount a larger camera though..
If you were filming with a 17-50mm, do you have 2 or we’re you filming with the 40mm?
Have you ever tested Sigma 17-50 EX DC OS HSM, and would you recommend it over tamron 17-50 vc for video work ? Thanks in advance :)
I know you have a Zoom H1, but would you consider getting a Tascam DR-05? Would you recommend one over the other, or does it really just not matter? Thanks.
+Thecomedyjudge they are very similar - there's almost no different between them
Are you going to be entering the Rode contest?
i don't think so, I've got too many other projects to finish before my exams this summer!
What DSLR camera would you recommend for beginners who want to shoot good video?
