It's time to compare the old 3DS XL to the shiny NEW Nintendo 3DS XL!! The new model is glossy, features a faster processor and NFC capabilities and also some surprise changes like louder volume, a higher contrast display, c-stick and extra buttons! Let's compare!

Can't imagine buying one of the older models at a retail store. "Can I get a new old 3ds XL" lol or in a few years from now a used "New" model at GameStop. "Yeah I want to buy a used NEW 3ds XL"

Unless you only shop at Gamestop where you can pick up the boxes our your stores are different then mine. The Walmarts, Targets, Bestbuys, Fred Meyers. And any other retail stores usually keep them behind a locked glass door where you have to get someone to open it and get you it and I never said it was a big deal just think it's funny since Parents were already confused what a 2ds was and a Wii U was. You honestly think parents are up to date on how the boxes of the consoles their kids play look like? Or did did you also forget companies change the style of the boxes hundreds of times as the years go by. See if the original 3DS XL box looks like the one they sell now. I can see a kid this Christmas want a NEW 3DS, parents going to a store and it being out of stock and then seeing the old 3DS in stock and just getting that one. Not knowing it's not it. Or by how you do it just grabbing the box of the old 3DS since their kid said they wanted a new 3DS and it saids 3DS on the box and buying it I'm getting a NEW 3DS so I'm not hating either.

Just bought the red model on Monday, my first Nintendo of any kind. I bought Super Smash Bros also, and gotta say, I'm really enjoying it. At first I was a bit sad that the base model wasn't available in the US, but after seeing the size difference I'm glad I got the XL. Nice two-part review!

Wow, I'm quite surprised at the difference. Great video, very informative.
It's too bad some people are very bias that they don't realise the difference... they don't have to buy the new thing but at least notice the major improvements and accept that it is "improved" and "better" instead of downgrading the system and making it hard for people to make up their mind. If you're happy with your old one, that's fine, but trying so hard to make the new thing look like crap because you don't have it is...childish. Just though I'd say that :)
William Vaughan That is so well put, that is exactly how I feel when people fight over the console "wars". Whatever you bought is great, just enjoy it.
I'm upgrading from a 2DS, a great budget model, that had only a few problems ("Cough" Phantom Stylus "Cough"), to a New 3DS XL, which I'm getting tomorrow, and you videos, the Hardware and software comparisons have nicely confirmed my choice, as for me the extra horsepower is one of the main reasons for the upgrade.

I'm very happy to see the screens are much improved! I've also seen in another of your videos that not only are the New 3DS and New 3DS XL screens improved in every way over the two originals, but also that the New XL's screens go one step further and are better than the New standard 3DS's screens!
I wasn't sure if I wanted a regular New 3DS or a New XL, but the more I look into it, the more I feel the XL is better in pretty much every way EXCEPT portability obviously. Can't wait for my Majora's Mask Edition New 3DS XL!

The new 3ds and old 3ds have the same screen and resolution... The only difference is the new 3ds has better 3d function.
@@UnderSizedBigfoot It seems I was referring to the better IPS panels used on some New 3DS compared to the lesser TN panels on every old 3DS.
I still have my Majora’s Mask New XL and the top screen is IPS and looks significantly better than the bottom screen which is unfortunately TN.

I'm just having problem to play with Thunder blade...I don't know exactely what buttons I should use in order to fly the helicopter.

I noticed the older 3DS XL with 3D turned on dropping frames in Pokemon X/Y and OR/AS. Does the New 3DS XL have the same issue or is 'fixed' with the better CPU?

I sold my 3DS but reconsidered buying a new one but this one makes me want to wait for the new model. Thanks for the videos, there is serious major upgrades to the software and Nintendo has done something right for once when introducing a newer model. And I can imagine 3rd party faceplates and all the customization on it. Can't wait.
XL version doesn't have faceplates.

Ugh, I wish they would give us a US release date for that. I've been holding out purchasing a 3ds xl because I want this new one more.
All i want to know is frame rate wise, I want the Hyrule warriors and have a 3ds xl and my gf has the original 3ds. Will there be massive frame drops and slow downs or are the performance changes negligible that i won't notice a difference? Thanks for your help
+Eric B I made a gameplay video but I was only able to test on a new 3ds so I don't really know about slowdown issues on the original 3ds
Is the higher contrast ratio also apparent for the new smaller 3ds vs the original? Or is this exclusive to the 3ds xl?

I am looking at upgrading to the "New" console but my dilemma is: 3DS or 3DS XL. I love that you can change up the face plates but not the extra cost of the face plates. I have had an XL for a year now and I am unsure if I can go back to the smaller screens of the 3DS even though I know that the "New" 3DS has bigger screens then the original 3DS. Since you have both consoles ( I can't afford both haha) what one do you see yourself playing/liking/gravitating to more when you want to play a 3DS console?
DarkenedxRedux I think I'm gravitating to the regular new nintendo 3ds. Changing the covers is fun, it's pocket sized and I still have my old LL which is still perfectly good, just lacking the c-stick etc.
Speedx 3d has low fps at times on the old 3ds. I'm wondering whether that still happens on the new 3ds?

Is there still slowdowns in framerate on the new 3DS XL during battles in Pokemon X/Y or Pokemon ORAS? It's just a minor annoyance but more noticeable when 3D is on.

Yes there is, because the game does not take advantages of the extra recources that the new 3DS offers. The game is only programmed to use the single core and 256mb ram.
PhantomImposter It's not a single core or 256MB of RAM. The original 3DS has a dual-core ARM11 with 128MB of RAM. Games need to be updated to recognize the other two cores of the N3DS, which has four cores and 256MB of RAM.
***** As far as I know, 1 core was used for the OS and one for the game. You are right with the ram tho.
What's the difference in the original sd cards because I went through my "blocks" on my 3ds XL pretty fast
Wow, these 2 vids were really good :) Just when I was thinking of sticking to my old XL, that screen and that speaker volume are convincing me otherwise. :/ By the way, is the New 3DS XL louder using headphones than the old one? In my experience with my old XL, even the sound output through the headphone jack is really soft.

Is the saturation also better for the normal NEW 3DS? compared to the "older" 3DS XL? I own a 3DS XL now but I'm thinking of going for the smaller NEW 3DS this time.
Hi, I was wondering how the screens of the regular new 3ds compares to the new 3ds LL because between the 2 older models there was a noticeable difference in my opinion.
The pixel density was showing of and is that still the case now?
I ask because I saw how nice the picture quality was of the new LL and I was considering buying the regular 3ds due to pixel density and because the screen is slightly larger now on the regular new 3ds... But I am in doubt now.

Alfred van Dalen I'll be getting a proper comparison video up as soon as I have time. The new regular 3ds still looks nice and sharp and the new LL is the same as before but yes the deeper contrast is a welcome addition.

I noticed a few frame slowdowns in some games, like Zelda OoT if 3d switched on, or too many objects in the screen. Is the new CPU working faster in the old games? (i mean the only 3ds games with old, i think they will bring out some "New 3ds enhanced games" or something like this)
MrFenrisWolfen It appears to vary by game. I generally haven't noticed much on old games though. I'm waiting for the New 3ds exclusives to see what the real difference is.

I was hoping to see how fast soft resetting was on the Pokemon games you loaded up. Is there a significant difference between the devices on how quickly you can get through the title screen and menu?
***** soft resetting? opening the home screen is pretty fast if that's what you mean
NihongoGamer Thanks for the response. Soft resetting means holding R, L, Select, and Start at the same time while in the game. It reloads the game, bringing you back to the title screen. This is used often in Pokemon games when looking for a shiny Pokemon or one of a particular nature. bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Soft_resetting
What is the name of the model used for the pics? Kinda bugging me to not recognize it.
I'm considering the upgrade from my original 3DS. Lately, the system occasionally states the cartridge has been removed when it is clearly seated in the slot. I am an avid Pokemon fan. My question to you is: Does the screen resolution look noticably pixelated or fuzzy when playing Pokemon games on the New XL relative to say an original 3DS? Thank you!

should be ips. if i remember correctly jpn consoles are almost always dual ips. could be wrong tho
If I am correct, they used both screen technology, so you won't know which one you are getting.
What I want to know is if the New 3DS-XL will have to do a soft-reset when closing Super Smash Bros. like the old 3DS-XL.

people are telling me that you will lose everything when you play your games on the new 3ds (by transferring there id, not sure what they mean by that) but looking at your video it looks that you won't lose anything, this is also what i thought because for pokémon games it saves on the game itself. So i geuss they mean just eshop games? Can you actually use your eshop account on both 3ds systems? I don't have a new 3ds at the moment but i'm thinking of buying one (not the xl one).

Did they fix the headphone jack on the new model? For example, when I had my old model 3DS the headphone output was so low! I was just wandering if they are the same.

+Aerokieran Hard to say. 3DS will most likely continue but can't guarantee how long the 'New 3DS' will be current gen. Consoles will have to evolve more quickly than in the past to keep up with the mobile space

hi, i have a 2ds, and i got to play ssb on a 3ds ll (xl) and i noticed how pixely it looks comparing it to my 2ds, does that happens with the new 3ds ll? since the screen is bigger does being bigger makes it look less clear and more pixely? thanks!!!!!
volfgasp The new XL is the same resolution as before so it'll still be "pixely" but I think I've just got used to it

Good set reviews. However, while the new 3DS XL is tempting, until there's a change in video resolution, I think I'll wait until Nintendo can pump out hardware specs (at least graphically) to compete with the Vita... even though the Vita itself isn't selling well. I'll stick to my older 3DS XL and since I already have it, and, other than obvious design changes, is pretty much the same.
I saw another review and saw that the new 3ds XL can use the c stick to change speed of RUclips videos :) and that the resolution was slightly better.

Hey, I live in EU and I have acces to both handhelds. Whitch one should I buy. I have a friend who has a regular ds3. He convinced me that 3ds is a real deal. So, when i tried his 3ds it was...umm...kinda small? I heard that the new smaller 3ds has screen slightly bigger than old 3ds. Is that half of a inch really making any difference? Should I go with smaller new 3ds or new 3dsXL?
Also, should I buy mario kart 7 or super smash bros or both?
