Man, I remember watching this video over and over again 7 years ago at my grandparents... crazy how time flies. Just put down my New 3DS XL after picking it up to play Majora's Mask 3D for the first time in forever, couldn't help but think of NihongoGamer when I did. This video is strangely nostalgic for me, hahaha! Thank you so much for your videos, I'm happy to see that you are still making them!

@@Kxhil i have a modded n3dsxl and i love everything about it but i always wanted the non-xl version (couldn't get it at the time since they didn't sell that in america). i already like it so much it just would've been better to have it be a little bit smaller and fit it my pocket better.

All of your comparisons are so ridiculously in depth. It's very professionally done and seems to come from the gamer's perspective rather than from the typical journalists perspective. Thanks for all of your videos! They kept me sane while I impatiently waited the month for them to come out here in Canada.

For everyone who can't decide between the two, I'm sharing my thoughts with you:
Normally, I'd go with the XL because it has a bigger screen. But, what makes me hesitate is the small form factor of the n3DS, the mat finish and the faceplates. The XL has none of these, the only good thing that it has is the bigger screen with a slightly better contrast, but those are things I can live without, especially if the n3DS has a slightly bigger screen. These things that are present in XL but not in the regular one don't compromise the experience, however, the faceplates clearly do. I want to be able to have a personal customized 3DS and I expect all future n3DS XL owner to envy those with the cool & original faceplates. So I'm decided to go with the n3DS.

If you want a big screen and you have somewhat large hands than I personally would go for the XL. If you really want a design and a personal touch to your 3DS that you could personally customize than go for the New 3DS. I personally own the New 3DS XL since June 26 2015 (when club Nintendo was about to close) and I still love it. There is also a alternative to customize your 3DS XL. I bought this clip on armpit that has the Mario design and it protects the system itself.I also I have a terrible time choosing what I would like to use to personalize my 3DS. Good Luck on choosing!

Bigger screen on the XL, but you have to remember same resolution, so same amount pixel's stretched out. were as the regular 3ds will have a sharper image cause the pixels are closer together.
Sadly he didn't talk about this. but this is a major thing which you can't really see on the video. I absolutely hated the 3DS XL because of the god awful resolution on a bigger screen which resulted in terrible PPI.
Stuff like text specially in 2D games but also in 3D games will look far more blurry and the games will also look far more blurry on the XL because of it. Which is a massive problem.

@@SmithKarkarov because I think the xl model is an ips and smaller is a tn, however there are also xl models with tn and also smaller ones with ips so you can't judge.
Great video! I just swapped my New 3DSXL for a New 3DS, and I love it. In comparison, the XL felt a little unwieldy (especially when playing in bed) and I could never get over the stretched resolution -- the top screen is just a little too big for it, and I didn't like the resulting graphical degradation. The New 3DS feels like a perfect shape and weight for my adult hands, and like you said, I don't miss the XL's screen size at all.
In contrast, my New 3DS feels much more solid (and "professional/adult") than my New 3DS XL did, both in build quality and aesthetics. My New 3DS XL had an awful clamshell hinge which would "flap" a good 10 degrees of travel while open, and could slide left and right about 0.5mm. It felt cheap and fragile. My New 3DS has neither of these issues!
Curiously, our power button comparison is flipped -- my XL had a receded power button, while my non-XL's power button sticks out. Also, my non-XL's clamshell is silent when clicking open and shut. Must just be differences in build tolerance.
My only complaint is, I've "downgraded" from an IPS screen on my New 3DS XL to a TN screen on the New 3DS. Colors don't wash out under ordinary use, though, so I'll live.

Idk what the difference between IPS and TN is but yeah, 3DSXL is way too big. I got small hands. I'll stick with the smaller version for the time being.

The wifi test would of being better if you did one device at a time
I was going to post that as well. If they are on the same network which ever download initiated first, even by a millisecond, will have priority. There are also multiple factors regarding speed quality, the type of network you're on, interference. I've done a test myself and download speeds have varied for the same game download on each respective console. The difference in speed varied by a maximum of two seconds as well. Lastly they have the same hardware making your speed test moot. I was hoping for a more technical evaluation but I guess opinions are nice sometimes too.

I'm in love with the colored buttons on the white regular sized New 3DS. Pretty annoyed we're not getting that in the US, I think it looks better and just the right amount bigger than the original regular 3DS.

You should have done downloads separately at different times due to bandwidth and put them side by side using your editing tools. That way we would have gotten the best comparison.

Love how thorough your comparisons/hands ons are. You really answer almost every question anyone could have, but you consistently fall short in one category and that would be describing the tactile qualities of the plastic itself. We know the new XL is glossy whereas the normal size one is not, but you didn't go to great lengths to describe the feel of the plastic of the regular new 3ds. It appears to be more of a matte finish but to what extent? Does it feel like the inside of a 3ds XL or is it the ultra matte finish we had with the DSi? Hopefully the latter! Thanks!

The only thing that bothers me with the bigger models is pixel density...I've found that a friend who I've playing Terraria with, had a much crisper and sharper image on his regular 3DS (which I've never owned) due to his game not being stretched out like on the N3DS XL. Also I assume that games like xenoblade chronicles has less noticeable jagged edges on the regular version than the XL version... Which... Again... bothers me a bit.Did you notice anything like this after playing on both consoles?

Been gaming on a 2ds for a long time and recently got new 3ds and man am I happy. The size being slightly larger than the original screen is perfect and the portability for me is what I’ve needed lately and it works very well for that
Seeing as it was probably your bandwidth holding back your download speed test, downloading the same game for each unit but at different times and recording their total download times would have probably been better.
But overall, a very good comparison. I learned a lot from this, thanks for the video dude.

I recently came over this channel and I enjoy watching these reviews lots. I recently decided to upgrade from 3ds XL to new 3DS xl. After first upgrading to XL from a normal 3DS maybe a year or two ago I never want to go back, the big screen is a must for me. And I also have a cute bag for my big ds and games, with pikachu on it, heh. I got the animal crossing versjon, soon to arrive in my postbox :D

That was an amazingly detailed comparison. My mind is now set, I want the New 3DS XL. I just hope we get more colors here in America. Dark Blue is not what I'm looking for in a 3DS. Hopefully we get at least a Black or White.

Because the screens seem to look better compared to the XL, cover plates are fun and do not slip off if you put them on correctly, and many people feel that the XL is too big and uncomfortable. The smaller size is also much more ideal for portability.
The XL still has that larger size which is more ideal for some people, the more mature design (if you want one) and the battery life. Plus, if it has that IPS screen the screens will look even more bright and vivid.
TL:DR: New 3DS non-XL is a comfortable size for many and cover plates do not fall out easily if slid/screwed on correctly. To each their own, though.

New 3ds is comfortable enough so the standard size is bete

Pokemon bundle? Wow! I haven't seen any bundles for pokemon be put on sale in Australia. We only have the New 3DS XL Pokemon special edition version (if thats what your talking about?)
+ThatOneNerd no he means the standard size 3ds bundled with Pokémon Red/Blue with charizard and blastoise faceplates.
Weird hardware points about the XL Nintendo has yet to address:
- *TN/IPS Screens*: 2 noticeably different types of screens that come on the XL. Getting the rich-coloured IPS screen is pretty much a lottery (you can't guarantee which type you get).
- *Click/Silent Hinges*: There are also 2 types of hinges that come on the XL, the "clicky" one which has a loud click when it locks into place; has noticeable screen wobble. As well, there is the silent/quieter hinge that makes minimal noise when locking into positions and has no screen wobble.
*Nintendo why can you not make all 3DS's equal? :(*
Agree! On my XL I got an ips top screen on mine thank goodness. But the clicky wobbly hinge. Whereas my normal size new 3DS has dual TN screens but the non clickky hinge.

My New Nintendo 3DS has a small stylus, but it still feels comfortable.
The NEW 3DS and NEW 3DS XL do not come with a AC charger/adapter, you have to buy the AC charger/adapter seperately unless you have a AC charger/adapter. My NEW 3DS is a Pre-Owned and it looks clean and nice and came with a NEW 3DS AC charger/adapter.

I bought a used New 3DS and New 3DS XL. I gotta say, I like the non-XL a lot better. For me, the screens definitely feel big enough, the XL's ones extra size feels a bit unnecessary. Apart from that, the materials of the non-XL ones feel a lot sturdier and higher quality and the proportions are much more comfortable to play. Like, with the XL, the D-pad and stick are just harder to reach because of the bigger frame. And I've got some big hands.
Any difference in the screens considering the pixel density?

As for fitting in your pocket, I'm 6 foot 3 and 224lbs, so I don't tend to wear skinny jeans! lol. However the XL fits in my front pockets no problem, however if I am wearing more fitted jeans the XL fits in my back pocket fine.

esmokez95 I have the xl and as much as I love it, I would go for the small one over it because its more portable, more customizable, and the screen is sharper. Just make sure the small one fits comfortable in your hands

I hear the XL has better colors, but that the regular size looks sharper and less pixilated.
Which one would you say the games look the best on? Like the actual quality of the picture, not the size of it?
nicole smith the regular model has a sharper image for sure, but I don't even think about it for 3DS games anymore because if it bothered me I wouldn't be able to play 3ds games at all lol

I'm not sure if it being more pixilated will bother me either. I've never owned a 3DS so when this new one comes out, it will be my first. I heard some people complaining about how the XL is more pixilated, so I figured I ask.
I guess whether that is a problem just depends on the individual though. I've never seen them up close to compare so I can't say whether it will bother me or not.
Anyways I was having a difficult time finding comparison videos that compare both new ones to each other.
Most comparison videos are comparing the old ones to the new ones. So thank you for this video, it really helped. :)
nicole smith Hey Nicole, obviously I don't own the New 3DSs or anything, but I do own both the normal 3DS and 3DS XL. I'd assume that the New models will be the exact same when it comes down to image quality (in terms of sharpness and pixelated looks). I think it really depends on the type of game or art style. I prefer my more serious gaming on my 3DS as like you said it's clearly sharper. Examples of this is Resident Evil Revelations, Luigi's Mansion, Zelda OoT, etc. All games on the 3DS XL will have a more pixelated look to them, that's just what happens when the screen is only stretch and doesn't have a higher resolution. BUT I found that Fire Emblem works well on both, the sharpness of the 3DS looks great, but because the characters have 2D sprites it looks great on the XL too. Zelda A Link Between World almost has a more retro feel to it on the XL, I guess it's because it's a sequel to Zelda A Link to the Past, but also looks great on the 3DS. BUT I actually prefer to play Animal Crossing on my XL, even though everything is more pixelated, I just find everything looks bigger and better on the XL. Pokemon also looks a little better (in my opinion) on the XL. So it really depend on your preference and the games. I used to play AC New leaf on my 3DS but once I tried it on the XL I always play it on the XL. However I do play more games on my 3DS versus my XL. I tend to prefer the sharp imagines over size.

Stephan van der Beek No problem, I'm glad I could help. I only play ACNL on the old XL because I have both, if I was tight on cash and had to sell one, I'd sell the XL. ACNL still looks better on the 3DS in comparison to the XL as it's crisper, but I find the cute art style looks great blown up. I just prefer to have everything look bigger in that game. ^__^ Sadly the N3DS hasn't been announced for Canada (or NA) yet... so looks like I'll be holding onto mine. Make sure you enjoy your N3DS enough for me too! haha

I am about to buy a new 3DS XL Galaxy version and out of all of the reviews I have watched this is by far the most comprehensive video on you tube. Great job. I am a bit worried about the power button as it would be really frustrating if I accidentally turned the system off while playing, or subsequently turned it on in my pocket without knowing and kill the battery before I even get to play. Aside from that I am very impressed and looking forward to black friday and the 100 bucks off the unit.

Aaron Stitch First of all on black friday the only model available is the New 3DS Special Edition Mushroom Kingdom. So yes its 100 dollars but no its not the XL.

@@ionzOG which one(s) between pocketability, faceplates and pixel density has(have) been the factors for your choice? Just curious, I have a dual-IPS New 3DS XL which sometimes bothers because of the low pixel density but it might be some game like the Pokémon ones who are quite "pixelated"
@@MarcoMissere I have had both the new 3ds and new 3ds XL. the higher pixel density is nice and its much more portable. I don't have any special face plates yet. I prefer the smaller one just because of the ppi and portability. The XL is more comfortable to play tho. Your lucky to have a dual IPS, or you had to pay out the wazoo for it. I would only recommend you getting the smaller new 3ds if you carry yours around a lot.
@@ionzOG I've been lucky because the seller on eBay didn't know his N3DS XL was a dual-IPS one. I play with it almost exclusively at home, with just a few times when traveling by train. Talking about pixel density on the XL model, there are the Pokémon games who bother me for their pixelation, and I hope it's less noticeable when playing other games (on the Super Smash Bros. demo I almost don't notice it, maybe thanks to the 3D set at the maximum level)

Guys? I need some help
I can’t really decide between them...
On one hand, I’m still a teenager so I’m not worried about whether it looks professional or not, so I think the smaller unit will be better, however I just really like the feel the bigger unit gives.
I have relatively short fingers (no offence to myself 😂) - like, definitely not those pianist fingers some people have, so once again, I think the smaller version will be better.
However, I don’t really like the thickness the smaller unit brings and I’m worried the screen might be too small or something along the lines.
Also, i like the idea of being able to put my DS into my pocket.
I just keep switching between them, but I’d really appreciate some help (gosh I’m being so deep and formal but really I’m just a tormented teen deciding on some old tech 😂)
Here it is in conclusion (the points for and against):
For the smaller unit:
1) I have short fingers so it will benefit them to have the smaller unit
2) The portability is good
For the larger unit:
1) It doesn’t have the unpleasant thickness of the smaller unit
2) The screen is nice and large
Overall, I am leaning towards the smaller unit a bit, however the way it’s quite thick depth wise and maybe the small size of the screen might make me kinda annoyed - any suggestions/advice/help would be highly appreciated (gosh here comes the formality of “any advice would be highly appreciated 😂 nah Mia, stop 😂)
