It's time to compare the old 3DS XL to the shiny NEW Nintendo 3DS XL!! The new model is glossy, features a faster processor and NFC capabilities and also some surprise changes like louder volume, a higher contrast display, c-stick and extra buttons! Let's compare!

update - The dimensions are slightly off. The old 3DS XL is 22mm, not 21.5mm. Small detail perhaps worth taking note for spec heads ;)

I really find the name for the "New" nintendo 3ds so confusing when i search for things on it because people sell nintendo 3ds xl and write new in front of it meaning it's never been used rather then the actual console New nintendo 3ds xl... get what I mean lol they really shouldve named it something different!

Nice detailed review but for me the most important addition to New 3DS (XL) is active face tracking for amazing 3D effect where you can move, tilt and shake and still see image change as you do.

Loving these very comprehensive vids, was going to buy a new ds (the last I own is the dsi) and I didn't even know there were new(er) models of the 3ds (XL). Was gonna get a 2nd hand one for price but now definitely considering an overall new one.

I actually like the placement of the sd card on the New 3DS.
It takes away that little flap that I always thought was going to break..
Also, it's not THAT much of a pain to take the backing off (only a couple of screws) and put in a different one.

You'd only have to deal with the micro SD card once if you're wanting more GB.

Yesterday, I bought the Nintendo 3DS LL, the older version.
Your English is very understandable...I wonder if that's Canadian English.
Only complaint is the new stylus placement, I find it much easier and faster to get the stylus from the side cause your hand is right there. Now you have to reach around to the bottom to get it.

That click on the volume slider is a Godsend, I remember how many times I was caught playing my 3DS late at night as a kid without headphones because I would accidentally nudge my left hand up and blast the Pokemon battle theme from ORAS at full blast. lol

I'm glad you mentioned the think pad because while I understand it doesn't move like a normal joystick would it does move other wise you would not be able to function for it what its suppose to. Can't believe it took them this long to incorporate that.
best review i saw for new 3ds xl vs 3ds xl yet. only thing is that he dont talk about the new processor.
If you are transferring data from 3DS to 3DS. I'd go for the Computer Based Transfer. Please refer to the Instruction Manual or the System Transfer Program for your 3DS system.

I however have a question :
I had kind of a bad experience with 2 old 3DS XL with the regular stick being too "rigid", rubbing against the plasting under the stick when I was moving it. It was a bit hard to move too.
Did you have that kind of feeling when using a 3DS XL ? If so (or if not) would you say that the N3DS XL regular stick (not the C-stick) is as I described it ?

Arian Chandra Yep, it's on its way soon, just had a lot of other videos I wanted to make and also upgrading my video editing set-up at the moment.
Funny thing is about the clicking, lately if you get a new New 3Ds, they now use the joysticks from the New 2Ds and they made the hinges not make any clicking sounds anymore.

Can you do a video showing how loud each of the 3DS consoles are? (With all of them set to stereo mode in settings).

Saw this video and the other one, and I'm still unsure of which to buy. I'm buying my first 3DS XL, ( first 3DS actually, mainly to play Pokemon OR :) ) and it's hard to decide. With me being on a limited budget, is it worth buying the new 3DS XL and wait for a while to buy the games ( I can borrow them from a friend but can't keep them, so yeah, ) or just buy the old one and the games ? Is the new one worth it, in your opinion ?
Will skins from 3DS XL work on the new 3ds XL? Pls reply asap, gonna buy it next week, super excited! BTW, did u see the Mario Maker New 3DS Xl skin? Will it be hinting Mario maker 3d?
I believe the old 3DS XL used a satin finish on most of the standard models, but some may have been matte instead. Matte feels more dry and doesn't reflect at all, but the satin reflects at an extreme angle (try it with curtains or lights) and it shows fingerprints, but it looks very subtle. Just what I believe, anyways. Good to see this info!

Also, does the circle pad feel any different? It seems a bit different to me but I can't point it out,. I really disliked the OG 3DS circle pad and my XL's one is really loose from Smash Bros so that one feels really bad too.. They don't feel firm and reliable, very flimsy and you feel like you have to be careful. Is that the case with the n3DS XL?
OmerMeee Feels the same to me, and actually my old XL was getting a bit sticky in its old age so having a fresh new console is really nice. I wouldn't say it feels any more solid than before though.
hey, I really want to buy this new model of 3ds xl or ll but im really curious about the graphics of the new one (new 3ds xl/ll) i do saw does specs of the 2 handheld and compare each other (the new 3ds xl/ll and the old xl/ll one) and i found it exactly the same except for the fact that the new xl has improve the 3d effect and now has a sensor that can improve the 3d performance so whatever angel you look in to the screen it still focus on you or something, but this not concern me. what im trying to ask is, does the new xl/ll graphics improve? did it looks different, i mean. it is not pixelate too much?

My 3DS XL has the line scratches so hopefully increasing the nubs will prevent the screen from scratching, regardless I'm going to put a micro fiber between the screens just to be safe. :)
Great vid still have the first 3ds since it came out since I really didn't see the point of upgrading since I could still play any game, but this seemed like a good opportunity to upgrade after watching. I kinda feel bad for my old 3ds though since it still looks brands new lol.

Starting of the video, I suggest you for next videos to put the actual numbers on the screen so the viewers can really appreciate the actual differences, I really can't just see or remember the numbers you say, making it very difficult to get my own opinion, elsewhere good video, have a good one

I pre-ordered mines. I haven't had one since I was 13 in 2009, or 2010 after I broke it.
I like this decal for the 3ds xl however im reading that the 3ds xl decal wont properly fit the new 3ds xl. well I originally had planned on placing two different decals top and bottom. the bottom is ment for the new 3ds so that's not a concern. I believe the top decal (og3dsxl decal) will fit but being that the cameras are sized much larger how off would this decal be. I think itd look fine just the holes would be bigger the groove on new 3ds xl might cause the decal to peel. please answer back thank you

I find that the new 3ds xl has a fair amount of screen wobble when it's open to the second click. Don't know why that wasn't mentioned.
The old 3DS XL had some very common problems, it had loose hinges so the top screen would wobble a bit, and the back pannel of the old 3DS XL at the left side (Volume switch side) was loose. Does the New 3DS XL still have these problems or are they fixed now?

How many exclusive games will there be? Because that's the only thing keeping me from just getting a refurbished 3DSXL from Nintendo.

It’s really up to personal preference, if you plan to play the games that require a new 3ds then it might be worth it but if not the regular 3ds xl is still a good console

I want to buy a new 3DS XL and I currently have the old one. So I want to do the system transfer, will it send every Game, Pictures, DLC to the new one?
Also, lets say that I want to have a much bigger memory capacity. I want to have 8g instead of 4g. Before I turn the new one on, the sd card must be replaced right?
One more question, I can just insert my Nintendo profile onto the new one right?

Infrared is for accessories like the Circle pad extension and various Japanese add-ons like pokemon Tretta among others :)

I see that the dark blue for the new 3dsxl in this video look a lot different than the usual blue new3ds. It looks a lot nicer here. Is it just available in Japan? Did anyone notice that?

I caved a while ago & bought the beautiful Monster Hunter 4U version of the New 3DS XL.
I still have an issue with the annoying placement of the SD card.
However overall it's a great system with small but nice upgrades....except the SD card placement.
Honestly I prefer the XL.
I know I’m gonna knock it off on accident when I’m going to get out the stick.
I also hate the idea of unscrewing the bloody back every single time I want to access the SD card.
Also the SD card is now I micro SD card meaning not only do I have to buy a new one, but whenever I want to get a file from it & put it on my computer I need to
1. Unscrew the back.
2. Slot the micro SD into an adapter.
3. Put it in the computer.
4. Take it out of the computer.
5. Take it out of the adapter.
6. Put it back in the system.
7. Screw the system back together.
The old way? Clicker out, put it in the computer, take it out the computer & click it back in.
Also that analogue stick is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too small.
I’m gonna stick with my old 3DS XL & just use the Circle Pad Pro with Monster Hunter.
Thanks for this video, you saved me wasting my money& to being disappointed.
They'll make yet another version in a year or so anyway.
Just to let you know:
1: They have (if I'm not mistaken) a wireless transfer feature so that you don't have to do that.
2: The C-Stick, isn't an analogue stick, it's more like one of those mouse nubs on old IBM computers and doesn't actually move.
Honestly unless you bought your XL 2+ years ago, I wouldn't recommend getting the new one, unless you're like me and like to get the next best thing xD

***** I'm not sure what constitutes a 'serious' gamer, but I'd say that any console upgrade that is well designed and encourages you to play it more is going to be worth it :)

Is the processing speed really a big difference? I had the old 3DS, got rid of it, caved and got the 3DS XL (not the new one) and just curious how Smash Bros will play on it in comparison? Been wanting to play it.
Only some games have been optimized for the new processing power, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Mario Kart 7, Super Smash Bros 3D, Shantae and Monster Hunter 4 U are some of them.
It plays the same as far as fps. the new3DS xl will have better loading times. the new 3DS will do more while you game like you can open the internet browser while pausing a game in the background. oh and you can play xenoblade on the new one.
Bob Saget Yeah, Smash is considerably faster on loading screens and such. On my O3DS, it took 30 seconds to a minute to launch the game, and on my N3DSXL, it takes about 5 seconds! Downloading DLC is faster, so is going online, and unlike the old model, when you exit the game, it doesn't reboot the system, it just shuts down like any other game. Hope this helped, but you've probably already gotten replies just like this so... :P

Yes
There's no such thing as a DS Lite game. There are just DS games and 3DS games (and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D). They all play on the New 3DS/XL

Silly question will the circle pad pro work with the n3ds xl and yes I know it has the New C stick and triggers but I much prefer the actual analog stick,I am willing to modify the circle pad pro due to slight size difference

It won't, there's no way to attach it, plus the console's a different size anyway.
