Nick great video of this 1982, CHP Mustang. I restore these 1982-1993 CHP Mustangs, 1987,1989 and 1995, CHP Caprices and the 2002, CHP Camaros. My CHP restoration videos are on you tube and come out to see the CHP cars I restore for this interesting hobby with CHP cars.
I still have my 1984 Washington State Patrol Mustang SSP..bought surplus in 1988...it was our daily driver until our family outgrew it...all white with dog dish hubcaps..spotlight...5 speed manual...all original...bought the correct vintage JetSonic light bar on Ebay just in case of future project...WigWags still work for some reason....fire it up monthly...4bbl carburetor takes a little cranking to fill....138K miles on the odometer....garaged the entire time...I love this car.
I remember in 1985 getting squirrely in my freshly rebuilt 350LT1 Z/28 and I got pulled over by one of these. We sat and talked cars for half an hour and he let me go with a warning. When he left he smoked the tires and grinded into second gear still burning rubber. That was a hilarious memory. Still have that car.
As a young teenager. Going between the Bay Area and LA we would stop off I-5 Buttonwillow truck stop. And they was always have between three to four of those Mustangs there.
Riding shotgun was used to describe the guard who rode alongside a stagecoach driver, ready to use his shotgun to ward off bandits or hostile Native Americans. In modern use, it refers to the practice of sitting alongside the driver in a moving vehicle. The phrase has been used to mean giving actual or figurative support or aid to someone in a situation. The coining of this phrase dates to 1905 at latest
on one of the older 70's/80's police cars the shotgun was secured on the bottom front of the seat. so you were literally riding shotgun haha (although yes the term did come from stagecoaches)
Hey! There is no CB in that car. The radio on the transmission hump is a Regency scanner. The big antenna is the dispatch antenna and the 18" on the roof is for the extender repeater for the handheld radio. Very nice job on the restoration.
The real term riding shotgun came from the Wild West era when the stage coach was transporting money the driver would have someone sitting next to him with a shotgun hence the term riding shotgun
No, "riding shotgun" refers back to the Old West and riding stage coaches. You had the driver who handled the reins, and then you had the guy next to you with a shotgun to protect the stage coach from bandits.
The term riding shotgun came from the stage coach days when people and money were transported around in a stage coach. There was the driver of the stage coach and someone sitting next to him with a double barreled shotgun. The person with the shotgun would “ride” holding the shotgun.
Too funny note that the long weapon antenna was for the main dispatch radio since it was low band it was not for a citizens band or CB radio. It was for their main dispatch frequency, which was usually around 42.000 mega.
There were also a small number of *hatchback* *SSP* *Mustangs* produced. The coupe was favoured over the +/- *5* hatchbacks; I've seen *one* example of the hatchback SSP, back in the mid-late 1980's. I wonder whatever became of it?
"Riding shotgun" comes from the days of (Wells Fargo} stagecoaches. One man drove the horses (6 or 8 usually) and his buddy sat up top next to him, with shotgun, to ward off highwaymen and Indians! Watch the (original) movie "Stagecoach" - with John Wayne &c - explains it all!
Would have loved to see a “polar bear” crown Vic or even just a regular patrol crown Vic but I’m sure they’re hard to come by now! Same goes for LAPD, you showed the Tesla, but I’m much more interested in the classic black and white Vic!
FYI- The very first order of 800 Mustang 5.0L Police Interceptors went to CHP Sacramento. To get the car to achieve the top speed the CHP wanted the first 800 were equipped with turbos. By the time the next fleet order was made, Ford electronic which allowed Ford to ditch the turbos. These cars had the first standard trans the CHP had seen in several decades. I talked to more than one officer who reported the smaller car handled great & was fun to drive with the stick & all. HOWEVER, the small bucket seats hurt their butt after a long day in the saddle. Not long after taking delivery late one night on I-10 outside of San Bernadino a CHP mustang unit saw a pretty new looking Corvette speeding. The Officer hit his lights and the Corvette hit his gas. The race was on. The Mustang chased the Corvette eastbound all across the California desert that night but the Corvette beat the Mustang across the state line. The Mustang was not able to overtake the big block corvette, but, it never lost sight of him. !
Nick you should try to check out the Ventura County Sheriffs Department. New Mobile Command Post, rook armored tractor, bearcat, tahoe, and 3 brand new blackhawk helicopters.
really neat to see it kept and all original. Just because of how old it is still don't really care for it, much prefer the later Fox body Mustangs in 87 onward. And of course the 98 and up Crown Vic.
Is it possible to show the siren models and tone demonstrations for these ? CHP has their own custom siren that no one else has as well as would have been cool to see what siren model was in that 82 ! Can't wait to see the LAPD episode :)
I got pulled over by one of these in 1986 for (allegedly) doing 70 in a 55 southbound on I-5. My military ID got it turned into "Failure to wear seatbelt" - only a $28 ticket. About 10 months later the NMSL was modified to allow 65 mph on rural highways (a move supported by the CHP and not the IIHS!)
That's so cool and I suprized the police car has manual trance mission. My image in there US I think 99% of cars are AT. I think then here in Japan over 90% cars were manual. But now over 95% of cars AT.
It was and still is mostly AT. The Mustang was special; and in later years SSP Mustangs started getting ATs. The Florida Highway Patrol was all MT except for unmarked cars (driven mostly by higher brass). And FBI used all AT in their Mustangs.
I dont understand why would you do that :D usually you have more important things to focus on than shifting gears manually and thats why police cars should be automatic.
@@veetikari111 Well most of the cars in germany are with shifting gears. It's like a "tradition". I guess that's why police cars are manual. But the newer police cars are automatic. You also need to know that we don't have that many dangerous situations where you need a higher level of focus, like in the United States. And Police Officer don't drive alone, they're always two of them in one car.
@@TheYourPlaysTV yeah i know. I live in finland and its very peaceful in here also. But you have to remember that police cars can be travelling at really high speeds when responding to calls and it is a whole lot easier to drive if you dont have to think about the gears. And also you can keep your both hands on steeringwheel all the time so you have better control of the car if something happens
Hey @NickOFFDuty, I’m not sure if it’s possible, but it would be really cool to show your OHIO fans some love! You should come up here and do an episode on one of our new Chargers with THE Ohio State Highway Patrol!! (Maybe when it gets warmer though, I know you like your Florida heat😂)
I had no idea cop cars had manual transmissions that recently. Even by the 80's I would have thought automatics were standard. One less thing you have to be doing when your dodging cars in a high speed chase.
I wonder what it’d take to use this in day to day operation. I’m sure the radio would need to be replaced for a digital one, and a laptop added to run licenses.
@@iamReddington It's not just CHP. Literally every emergency vehicle in CA has to have one. (it's on old law dating back to like the early 40's, people were complaining they couldn't tell which direction a police car was coming from) In most cases one of the "takedown lights" on the lightbar will have a red lens to meet this requirement

i have seen your channel. that is cool. i like the old school stuff like the dodge monacos from the 70's

That car only needed the one red light, When it came On It meant one thing, You best be pulling over!
State of California vehicle code states that is all that's required to pull a car over. One steady forward facing red light.
2:55 - it actually came from stagecoaches, but patrol cars are cooler lol

Hey Nick, hello from Cape Town! What's happening with the Miami PD channel? Haven't seen anything for months.
I did
It was a Tesla
I watched the whole clip and all the clip you did
Oh boy!!! You bet I did!!!
The long antenna is for dispatch(low band); the short antenna is for the scanner. There is no CB in this unit.
Walt Witt the prank to pull was to have the new guy hook the antenna down to go into a parking structure and as they held it, key the mic.
VHF Low vs VHF High.
shotgun came from the old West on horse Wagon the person next to the driver would hold a shotgun. not the CHP.
Wagon Wheel Farm CHP adopted that phrase.
T Bone they may have but they did not make the phase
Was about to say the same thing lmao
Idiots

You are absolutely correct!!! Nice catch!
One of the coolest police cars I've ever seen would love too see in person.
Thank You Officer for sharing ! 🫡🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Yo Nick, did they just give up on the Miami vlogs altogether or what? Whats the deal doggie?
Back in the old wood baton, revolver and V8 days!

Awesome video, Nick!... and thanks to EVERYONE that participated in the Haix boot giveaway!
What happened to police vlogs on Miami PD? Would be cool to see a Super Bowl vlog from them!
Michigan and California state patrol have the most unique emergency light set up with the red light. Georgia State patrol has the best paint job!!!
Woot Woot love the ‘82 Fox Body Mustang SSP

Sweet! Would of been neat to see them include a Crown Victoria as Well.
The prototype CHP Mustang SSP is at the Mustang Museum Of America in Alabama.
I know that the whip antenna was used for the police radio. When I was a cop, we used to talk to the CHP when the "skip" ran from W.Va. on 42.120 Mhz
More than likely the low band radio antenna instead of CB, huh? 39.5 or 39.3 etc. Nice! Thanks for sharing!

Bring back some ride alongs please nick !!! 😫😫😫
Hey Nick i wear the badge, even though I'm not a CHP officer, I'm a future CHP officer.
Awesome
Respect for SUA Police ❤️
The term, “Riding shotgun,” originated with stagecoaches. The passenger up top, carried a shotgun.
Finnaly Another vid came out I want another patrol Vid
Any comfortable stick driver can do just as much while driving as and automatic driver.
More in a powerful vehicle.

Nick: Crazy stuff, shifting gears
Rest of the world: ??? Wtf???
Lol…shifting gears isn’t the base of the wow…it’s working the radio, lights, gears and being actively pursuing or taking a traffic stop is a lot
Should do the FHP slick top charger and the new Durango, Mustang or challenger
Yessss so glad you uploaded! I love your videos man! They are so freaking good! Never stop making them!
Sweet Ride
Been a long time nick 🙏🏾 keep it up !!!
Nice video nick of duty
Looks like you came up short on those likes Homie.
Welcome back! Wish you can do more police cars! I love police stuff! Keep it up NICK!
Fun video,. 👍
Soooo cool! Funny how they only used one red light to pull people over compare to now.
Is that shotgun original that came in the car?
Finally!!! LETS GO
Damn I wanted to hear the siren.

Alot less people probably ran back then
Please come to Indiana! Review with Indiana State Police.
Wow, that took a while to unlock.
You gotta pop the Hood next time to show that 5.0:).
Ah yes, with that silver round air cleaner labeled "H.O. 5.0"
Nice . 👍
Love the video beautiful car.
You should head over to Fremont Police Dept to show off there Tesla Model S Patrol Car.
"chase's Porsche's for a living"...ever catch one though? lol
3:09
Wrong, it came from before the civil war. The passenger in a certain car and era ( which I forgot details of ) had a shotgun.
10/10 AWESOME!
Mustang super dope and cant wait to see that Tesla
I had a feeling LAPD was next
very nice video!! Missed you
We need an actual CHP Mustang vs Porsche ''Pursuit'' for entertainment purposes!
It would have to be a 1982 Porsche to be fair.
Was Ofc. Rambo in the CHP Lip Sync video?
Love it!
6000 likes to see nick do a Lapd video ride along and vehicles
I called it thanks great one
Welcome back Nick!!
NOD SQUAD
This is handsome brother, love it !!! 👮♂️🚔⚫️🔵⚫️

I really liked the Ford Mustang. But why the Mustang didn't come with a automatic transmission?
I wonder what it’d take to use this in day to day operation. I’m sure the radio would need to be replaced for a digital one, and a laptop added to run licenses.
Even today, with all the fancy LED's an stuff, emergency vehicles in California must still display at least one forward-facing solid red light.
That's the biggest reason I don't like the CHP vehicles. That solid light is so ugly.
