    This really is significant. And Matt did a nice overview. There are plenty of people who love using LR, yet still find PS intimidating. Essentially, the newest innovations are saying 'you don't have to go to PS'. Which is more important than a lot of people think. Ultimately, the objective is to achieve results in the shortest possible time. I can only imagine what's next from the Adobe team. Neural filters in LR, maybe? Oil Painting effect? Is there life after Layers? Is LR perhaps becoming PS Light? A lot of people would be a bit more comfortable in that environment. There is nothing wrong with making processes EASIER...and dare I say it...Fun!
    And it just might sell a lot more subscriptions for Adobe.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE TIME STAMPS. I have used LR a lot and so am quite familiar--for the most part I'm finding my around the new vsn. But there are a few things that I've been getting hung up on, such as how to do the luminance range masks, and your explanations of these have been very helpful. And it took only 3 min., which is much appreciated. I plan to come back and listen to other parts as needed. Thanks!

    I discovered this yesterday right after upgrading. I too was blown away. I was doing some senior portrait editing and was absolutely amazed that it was able to correctly select my subject every single time. It allowed my to easily do a little additional blurring to the background and change it some to add a little more contrast. Amazing up update.

      It was about time. Lightroom was way behind nearly every competition including even small mobile editing apps. For such smart features it still is, even after this update. But I still use it for professional work due to all its otter cloud based features which come it very handy for my workflow

    @adamkrauss303 2 года назад +5

    Yes, very excited about this one. For me, the last game changing update was the inclusion of the dehaze slider. However, for me, it seems that every update just makes LR run even slower- despite the supposed improvements in speed. Even the most simple tasks cause LR to freeze up and go black while it gives me the dreaded “not responding” message. My Dell XPS desktop running Intel dual core I7 and Windows 10 is pretty powerful, but despite these exciting additions, I use LR with an air of dread. I will be upping my RAM (now 8gb) to see if it improves things. And btw, I am currently only working with a 24 MP Nikon camera...

    • @vikmanphotography7984
      @vikmanphotography7984 2 года назад

      For me, Lightroom pretty much only crashes immediately following start-up. Granted I've had 16+ gig RAM for the past 6 years or so (currently 24).
      It is highly inconvenient but letting Lightroom have 5-10 minutes to start without touching anything has mostly solved my problems. It's inconvenient enough though that I do most batch editing via CaptureOne these days and just organize the final folders in Lightroom

    One important overlooked feature here is mask intersection. You probably can achieve the same results with addition, subtraction and inversion, but it can be more straightforward in some cases.
    For example a linear gradient intersected with automatic sky selection will give you a linear gradient restricted to the sky with a couple clicks.

    Thanks so much, Matt, your guided tour is VERY helpful! After just a few minutes, I think I can achieve a significant amount of the post-LR work I have been doing in PS for years within LR. Isn't it interesting how LR is gradually becoming convergent with PS? I predict Adobe will introduce something akin to the Quick Selection Tool into LR next. I'd really like them to introduce blend modes into the masks too. We can but wait and hope.... Thanks again for this video, Matt - really saved me some angst in finding out how this all works!
    PS as a small 'thank you' for all the helpful advice you have provided me, I have just bought a copy of your LR Mask & Brush tutorial. I see that some of your peers have a 'tip' option on their YT channel - maybe something to consider for viewers who want to show their gratitude but already have your tutorials? (Apologies, I originally posted this comment against the PS update video instead of this one as intended.)

    As someone that works primarily with After Effects, I'm no stranger to masks. This renaming of everything and implementation of the word "Masks" into Lightroom really makes it apparent to me what the use of this program is and what the workflow might be immediately. Before seeing this I always wondered how this was different from Photoshop or why I would use it instead, and now I have a better idea of the strengths of each program after seeing this with language I already understand from using After Effects.

    Great video, thanks Matt. The sky selection for masking is brilliant. It’s not perfect, but very close and easily fixable. Just spent 3 hours comparing the same photos with similar AI sky masking tech from Skylum (Luminar) and ON1 (Photo Raw 2022). About 90% of the time Lr isolates the sky far better than the other two. I suppose it should given the massive resources Adobe have to throw at it! Combined with the awesome performance on M1 Macs, Lightroom is firmly back at the centre of my workflow. Just ordered your masking course!
