Very interesting! I would have liked to see the camera on the mouse when you were flying the ship since the input overlay doesn't convey too much as to how it's manipulation reflects the actions in flight!
An easy way to visualize what it will make your ship do is attach a small model to the top of the "hat" as you called it. Move the controller forward, the model moves forward and thus your ship in game does the same. Tilt it back, see both your irl and in game ships tilt back
Original backer of Star Citizen here, and wow I have no idea something like this existed. Been looking for an alternative way to fly ships for a long time and might have to give this a try!
It's definitely interesting but it seems like for the money you could get a Hotas stick and thruster that would have more buttons for all the other controls you'd want to use while flying like shooting and missiles and switches and buttons that could be mapped to things like engines on off and etc, while still having every type of flight control mapped to the stick and thruster.
@@pfistor Well you cant really expect it to be cheap. While it is commercially available, it is geared toward industrial use, rather than general. It is a tool for 3D software model rotation (Autodesk inventor, SolidWorks and so on). And the price reflects that. The idea is that you can rotate the model/scene with the 3D mouse, while using the regular mouse for the general actions in the software.

FANTASTIC! Thanks for the info! This is the solution I was looking for to playing Star Citizen on the road without taking my full HOTAS and rudder pedal setup through the airlines as it saves me the cost of luggage whenever I travel by airline. WOW!
I was graciously allowed to take my Space Mouse home for a weekend due to my boss being an absolute legend. Getting it to work was a huge pain, but I did make some observations during gameplay. First, I was mostly successful in using it for thrust/strafe ONLY (not altitude control). Separating attitude control from strafe was far more intuitive than controlling all six axes with one hand in a flight sim. Second, this can theoretically pair well with a HOTAS, even a cheap one. I used my X-52 stick for attitude control and the space mouse for throttle/strafe. Also, I HIGHLY recommend that people download the 3Dconnexion software and go through their tutorial. This product is meant for CAD users to “fly” around a model/assembly and it takes some getting used to.
I tried this years ago, many of us have, a good joystick with twist is better. More button access for starters, your arm/wrist doesn't get as tired, and they're less twitchy. Glad you're having fun though. Spacemice are KILLER for 3D modeling though. Another good option is the Thrustmaster T16000m FCS throttle, it has a mini-joystick on it for strafing, plus normal throttle and a knob for speed limiter.
i'm also excited for when this comes. i've got joystick gremlin detecting my spacemouse but ive seen other people have this same problem: it does not return the inputs to zero when i am not touching the spacemouse. this happens whether i set the remap to absolute or relative. thats because the problem is happening before it even goes through the remap to the vjoy device. it says the spacemouse is doing it. @@expressmangaming650
Here is my vote for a setup video. I have gotten a few low budget gadgets to use with Star Citizen and half of them end up in the drawer because the support software is either buggy, deficient or needlessly complicated. Love to see what is entailed in getting something like this setup, before make the purchase. Also, I have been eyeing one of these for 3D modeling work for a long time.
2 more additional thoughts. First, I think it would be a great idea if you did do an additional video detailing ALL of the software you used with links and how to set it up for use in Star Citizen. Also, I found (and downloaded) some 3d-printed hand-rest files that people can download and print to use so as to minimize or possibly eliminate movement of the controller as they pilot their ship. I plan on getting the Spacemouse Wireless for use in Star Citizen and Elit Dangerous and the Spacemouse Wireless Enterprise (the most expensive version) for use in Fusion 360 & Maya) Finally, I will add a throttle unit. Just haven't decided which one yet.
Yes, very interested on the setup process and follow up to the initial testing phase. Planning on coming back to play some SC and this mouse might be a good way to set up an intuitive control scheme which occupies almost zero space and might stay relevant long enough until SC gets closer to at least Beta and I can justify a couple of joysticks, mounts, and pedals. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this! I just started playing SC a few months ago and have been looking into using joysticks, controllers etc. Now hosam interests me, and this could be a different approach to a VKB throttle and mouse. Dual sticks seems kind of overkill for me. I’m not interested in dogfights, but better flight controls than WASD for sure! I’d love a little more in depth on this when you can!
I use s SpacePilot Pro together with a throttle stick. Works great for carefully maneuvering very heavy ships. It's like having the ship in your hand. One frustrating thing are forward thrusters being extremely strong and side strafe thrusters being extremely weak. Instead of 2 curves, I have the acceleration limiter on the throttle stick. The same throttle input does speed limiting and acceleration limiting. On the throttle I have 6 LABELED buttons assigned to: Cruise control, landing gear, request landing/docking, external view, vtol mode, open doors .
Watched your latest vid then came back and saw this one and am now waiting for my newly purchased Spacemouse. Looks awesome. BTW, you had me at The Expanse reference - how they control the Roci! :)
Brings back memories of the Space Orb 360 controller released in 1996. I bought it in my struggles to master 3d games like Quake 2 and Descent. The tennis ball sized orb was pushed twisted and tilted to move your toon around. And it had SIX buttons!
Hmm ... very interesting. Even though i already climbed the ranks in the cult of HOTAS i still can see that this is quite a useful tool that doesn't need much room on once table. Still they do not come cheap. I am just a little worried about the build quality since these days there is a lot of gimmiky crap out there. Now since you got one already it would be great if you did another aftermath review a few months of use later.
If you go with 3Dconnection which is pretty much the only commercial maker of that type of product you won't go wrong. They've been making the same product since the early aughts pretty much. I've tried to go with gimmicky alternatives for work and still once I finally ponied up for the SpaceNavigator(previous iteration of the SpaceMouse) it was like an entire different class of product. Software is software though and looks like you would need 3rd party software regardless to make this work so mileage may vary.
Hey there. Watched your video like 10 times. Please please please make an in depth video about how you set it up, because a fellow citizen is struggling over here 😅
Returned mine 3 weeks ago. Would not bind correctly with Star Citizen. Tried several 3rd party programs to no avail. It's very expensive. Didn't need the pull up push down feature. So a cheap joystick made life much easier. Binds correctly. 1/3rd of the price.
I would 100% move it off the mouse pad and put some 2 sided tape under it though and either put it on something i can rest my wrist on to hold it down or just stick it straight to the table.
For the speed limiter I was thinking of a foot pedal. My plan really would work wounder for control in decoupled mode. having full thrust available unless I'm pressing the peddle, this would help full thrust issues when taking off and landing so you don't destroy the ceiling with your ship.. maybe 2 foot buttons for speed up and speed down.
wow, I've had a 3D mouse for years for CAD work.. I can't believe I never even thought that a mouse made for 3D space manipulation would be perfect for a 3D space flight game! Turns out some of the most obvious ideas are the most brilliant!
Interesting. I have been using my Space Pilot Pro for years for Elite Dangerous & Star Citizen. It's just plug and play. Set it up in game, and have at it. I've never used third party software to get it going. I wonder why your experience was so different... because you are using the base Space Navigator perhaps? Good video, glad you shed a spotlight on this amazing device.
I use the Space Mouse at work for CAD. I have used the Enterprise, the Compact and the Wireless. They all have exactly the same drivers. They only differ in the number of buttons, portability, display and whether with cables or wireless. The best one to start with is the Compact. It is a little heavier than the Wireless and is therefore easier to use because it sits better on the desk. I currently use the Enterprise, although the display hardly adds any value. It is nevertheless more ergonomic than the small Compact. All buttons are freely configurable in the driver in all models and are quite useful. If I were to buy again today I would go for the SpaceMouse Pro for daily use or for casual use the Compact. The driver setup and basic operation is the same for all models.
I've used a 3D connexion space mouse for work for nearly 5yrs, and I've always known it'd be an amazing control method, I just didn't think they'd support it lmao. I'll have to give it a go!
when i was in college and we used to play Quake 2 and TFC there was this controller called a Space Orb 360 that I used to play with and I loved it. It had 6DOF like this thing but you held it like a game pad controller and the rest of it was shaped like an XBox controller. Loved that thing.
I have one of these for 3D work, and I’d seen it being used in The Expanse, but I’ve never tried to use it in SC. This looks really cool, time to give it a try!
This is so cool. And also so much more compact than using dual joysticks. of course not being able to press any buttons with the spacemouse hand is a bummer but your second hand is completely free after all. This is on the same level as using a Dualsense controller when it comes to compactness and still having access to 6 analog axis.
Being a person that has the full size spacemouse already for use with 3D CAD programs, I too would be interested in a set-up video. I did already purchase VKB dual sticks and Tobii eye tracker, but before I actually play, because of the enormous CPU and moderate graphics requirements, I am going to wait till I build a new system. The 3.18 updates are not the best time to move in on this game either, but future can only get better with further improvements, bug fixes, and coding improvements. So meanwhile, definitely look for a video on setting this spacemouse up to give it a try and get more use out of it also.
Very cool you scoped this out from Expanse... Im sure there are more examples of other products IRL beside this, but I noticed an X56 HOTAS in a few ships in Expanse as well. Nice video! If I wasnt already way over budget on a HOSASATAPACAMTC 👀(any guesses?) setup then Id definitely give that mouse a go!
When I saw that in The Expanse I immediately recognized it. I too thought that would be the most intuitive input for moving 6dof in space even though I am a HOSAS fan for SC. I have the first gen basic Space Navigator like the one you got and ~10 years later still works. I have used it for a few games when it worked for them and love it for smooth camera controls in movies. The infuriating thing is that users have begged the manufacturer for years to support gaming features or at least fix their generic DirectX support and they could sell even more of them. Some versions of the software worked ok and stopped working completely on random versions then work again on others. Its software on some versions would conflict with my Razer Nostromo analog or d-pad inputs. For the apps it was designed for its top tier. I gave up on using it except for a couple games and mostly just for 3d apps. It's a cool device but a pain to configure in apps not designed for it. I didn't know joystick gremlin could act as a shim for it. The sensitivity curves are a great idea because your wrist gets strained if you are levering on it too much and wears it out and can need calibration more often. It's meant to be used with low pressure making it very comfortable for hours of use. Cruise control with your input curves sounds like a prefect solution for preventing strain and getting granular control. I thought about buying the pro version but the extra keys and screen I assumed would be useless in games since it's not very programmable sans apps it was made for, but I haven't looked at it in a long time for gaming. Maybe a fresh look is in order. Good mod.
Yeah, as a Space Pilot Pro and Space Mouse Enterprise user, I can confirm they are great for Star Citizen, especially since the drivers have improved dramatically over the years (reading your comment reminded me of that driver trauma lol). Now they are just plug and play. Set it up, and get to flying. If you are going after one, the Space Mouse or the Space Mouse Enterprise are the way to go, especially the latter. So many buttons and they are easy to program, and easy reach when playing.
Yes I quickly became frustrated enough with the 3DConnexion software that in my mind it only exists for the sake of drivers. I do all the configuration of it through Joystick Gremlin so I only have to mess with it in one place.
I had no idea this thing existed, I am glad RUclips recommended this video. However, the spacemouse is like 500 euros in my country, at this pricepoint I can just get a high quality HOTAS. :)
So far the elite V2 with couch citizen setup has been the best flight I have ever had. I have hotas... Dual sticks.. keyboard and mouse.. but the elite V2 and proper mounting. And being able to adjust tension on the sticks just makes for such an enjoyable experience
Great vid! i have been using a space mouse pro for 6 years, and i am supprised that there are not more 6-dof options out there. i agree with youir points on the advaneges of the contoller. definatly better for bigger ships and smoother flying, though i have trouble landing shots in a pvp setting. with the space mouse pro, i have 14 buttons i can hit. very usefull for landing and warp controll. id say that the biggest difference is i do all my flying decoupled. i am glad to see im not the only crazy one who went out of the way for the 6-dof expierence. XD
for this ammount of money, you can buy two thrustmaster t1600 with buttons and 4 way hats. I feel this mouse would limit my options, even in star citizen. But at the end it comes down to personel preference.
I think this is cool af, but you gotta try two sticks big dog. Best bang for buck is two VKB gladiator Premiums. TOP dogs are Virpls.. Your 3d mouse wont go to waste. Use it for camera control. Make sure your in game ship movement deadzones are at 0 as well.
I've tried my brothers HOSAS in SC and find it very difficult to adapt to. I've been using 3d mice like this for work for ~15 years and it's second nature to me. Mentally dividing these 6 axes between 2 hands is illogical. The major downside to this HO6AS setup I run is I cannot have precise control over one specific axis at a time. I find that I miss this kind of control for takeoff and landing activities but have found that programing the dead zones prioritizing linear axes helps.
As someone that uses the space mouse enterprise professionally I had a few comments and questions, first of all, AMAZING. This is exactly what I was looking for. But the question I had is, you seem to be talking about “your free hand”? In my line of work usually we use the space mouse left handed and have the right hand free for mouse use. Is this something you have considered? Does it even work? For example in cockpit could u use the space mouse to fly and the regular mouse for throttle control and looking around at the same time?
That's a really interesting point, because when I fly MSFS, ala Airbus pilot, I fly left stick, with a ambidextrous joystick. But I do keep the space mouse in my right hand. If it was my only control input, switching to the left might be exactly the right thing to do, but I have since bought a throttle (a video I really need to make) so it now occupies my left hand. I am REALLY liking my space mouse throttle combo. The main advantage of the throttle is that the forward input on the spacemouse is possibly the most annoying. The spacemouse exceeds at maneuvering more than throttling.
Yeah it’s the most intuitive controller if you get the curves set up to alleviate fatigue. Decoupled mode is really nice. But when it’s normal, I like how you can just let go of it and it will eventually stop The biggest problem I had with the big pro model with buttons was the rubber coating deteriorating. I had to dissolve it and polish the plastic underneath. I think there are axis that are better with a throttle or stick though if you’re constantly needing to push it. Also I tried to get the buttons to work for me but they’re just not positioned it designed to use with one hand flying a ship. Also the buttons aren’t linear and clicky enough to be satisfying for gaming imo
Very awesome! I am trying to got into SC but with curious kids a HOTAS setup will not work. This could be a nice solution and still have good movement ingame. THank you very much for this tip. As others commented, a full guide with configuration would be greatly appreciated for us lazy peons =) Keep up the good work!
When I came back from my break on the release of 3.0, I started trying out all the control methods to see what I liked. At the time, there was a RUclipsr named Sitarow who was using a 3d mouse, so I tried it. Like you said, it's good for large ships, it's bad for small ships that require fast input. I moved on and ended up with a Virpil HOSAS, but I kept my 3d mouse hoping for the day that SC's control's matured and allowed multiple devices to do the same thing. I'd like the 3d mouse for moving around my large ships, or just doing things like landing, taking off, and docking. TBH, I just think the 3d mouse is cool and want to use it =p
Thanks for the video. I have looked at these mice before, but did not want to drop the $$$. I was like, no one else seams to be using them. must not be a thing. Looks like it might be just the ticket. Cool man, thanks for sharing.
A couple of things that may already have been mentioned. You can turn off the windows response to the 3D mouse by turning off the 3D connexion software. Also, I've used this pretty extensively and loved it until I realized there's a major problem (for me). That is the twist and translation axes are mechanically coupled, meaning that you cannot twist (yaw) 100% and translate (translate forward/backward) 100% at the same time. As a result I switched to using an Oculus rift controller instead. YMMV I love 6dof controllers and this one is nice, but some of the older ones don't have the mechanical coupling.
I'd love to see a setup vid. I mean HidHide, Vjoy, and JG bits--those core piece can be relevant to everything. I long used a Virpil joystick for 92% of games I play; and most are not space flight (but some are). It's great for isomeric RPGs. I suspect a setup vid to get it out of "run windows for you" mode over to "yeah, joystick things" would be generically useful. Anyway, interesting vid, thanks!
Would be better if this mouse also had conventional mouse controls (LMB,RMB,wheel/MRB). It could be in a similar setup trackball mice do it with the plate extending to the left and having them in a position where you can use thrm with your thumb.
So when on foot in Star Citizen, you still walk with the space mouse in control, or you switch back to the regular mouse? (For left/right clicking, etc) Also, with maybe a key combo, you can control throttle with the space mouse? (ie L-Alt + Rotate Spacemouse wheel?)
I started playing SC during the COVID lockdown. I've had 3d mice like this for work for at least 15 years. Since I was working from home my Space Piolet Pro was immediately available for SC so I've been flying with it since day one. I use sx2vjoy to allow the device to be seen by SC. I fly everything with it maybe 95% of the time. If I'm flying straight for a large distance I will use the keyboard and hold W. Maybe a year ago I purchased a VKB Gladiator NXT for my right hand to provide easy access to many frequently used buttons needed during flight. My speed limiter is on the stick controlled by my right thumb. I've messed around using joystick gremlin to merge axes of the 6dof mouse and stick. I think I'm finding that Joystick Gremlin struggles with the merged axes giving more of a digital (on/off) response to one particular axis when outputting multiple axes data from the merged controllers. It's not a smooth analog multi axis data stream into SC. While messing around waiting for the 3.18.1 wipe I've stripped things down and stopped using Joystick Gremlin meaning that I'm not using the stick for any rotation axis control. I think I may get back into Joystick Gremlin and setup low, normal, and high response curves similar to what you have done to change flight characteristics depending on how I need to fly. I would highly recommend picking up a decent stick and running a HO6AS!
I'm interested in using it for camera control, but since it can apparently only be done with XML manipulation of the settings, I think it would conflict with flying. Maybe. I"m not sure.
I hope that I can somehow add and use many accessories. As this kind of 3D mouse would be awesome for precise maneuvering thruster movement like in The Expanse. Or when in decoupled mode you only need minimal movements. For the rough flying work a HOTAS has my preference. And for ground stuff I need a mouse and keyboard. And who knows what else you can add.
Great video. I have one of those stored away. I try to play SC with the keyboard and a joystick. I would like to see how you setup the 3D mouse. Thanks for the vids.
Have you tried it in decoupled mode? Would eliminate the jerky-jerkiness with the ship not constantly trying to stop itself when you let off forward throttle.
Man, if you are one of those people who cover all SC's aspects, you need it all. m&k, hotas, 3d mouse and steering wheel. But i would love a flight yoke it covers all the flight and drive aspects. Great for driving vehicles, flying truck and you can do even a combat to some degree.
The problem is that joysticks already do this, along with more functionality. You also get a LOT more precision off a longer stick than a stubby knob. Consider sliding a mouse around compared to using the IBM clit button mouse. Even if you don't need all that extra precision, you can turn up the sensitivity and get the same benefits as this knob, plus more.
Nice Space Mouse flying! The mouse is fairly inexpensive. Neat. I have a Logitech Cyberman 2 (same idea of a space ball / 3d control puck) that I bought 30ish years ago! Loved that thing. Now I have to get a game port / usb adapter and use it! LOL The space mouse would be far more useful ... and I'm staring at the Amazon page far too long.
Used a 3D mouse for Star Citizen back in the 2.x patches. Didn't play for years after that so the mouse is in a drawer somewhere. And nowadays I just can't be arsed taking it out again. Back then I think I used the 3D mouse for flying and tried using the normal mouse for gimbals. Was kinda hard though lol.
I bought a Huion mini keypad kd100. It is in the shape of a keyboard's number pad and has a lot of macro key options plus an additional rotating dial. this could be a good pairing for speed limiting and additional key options
As someone who uses the exact mouse model you've got daily for work purposes here's a small bit of advice: you want to get used to manipulating it with your left hand and use your regular mouse with your right hand.
I have one of these for Soldiworks, was given it back in the day but never got used to it in that context. Now I'm gonna have to bust it out, I feel like I could train to use it better in something like SC than I can in SolidWorks.
definitely interested in seeing your video on how to set this up, as i have one of these mice that I would like to get working as a star citizen method of input. Watching this video gives me some ideas but having trouble getting it to all come together.
Is yaw continuous spin off the wheel or twist and hold? I've been looking for a 6DOF control device ever since I saw the subflight dynamics stick as I travel for work and hauling around dual sticks takes up a ton of space, so thank you very much for this video
I have the wireless version. It's expensive. Dual Joysticks is the way to go if you need full PvP ship combat, although a Joy and Mouse is a popular option too. I typically have gone the lazy way of a Joypad, I'm happy to try it again with my expensive paper weight.
Been using a 3d mouse for 3d apps for years. Also have a Thustmaster t1600. Will try using right hand for 3d mouse and left with joystick. Usually my left hand hold using a wacom Pen. Have a few fighters in SC so this might be perfect.
I would be very happy to see a guide to set up the spacemouse on SC, i have bought one, tried with gremlin, vjoy and hidhide, and havn't be able to use it on star citizen for now
Excellent video. I've been using on for a few years now. I really like it and have actually used Gremlin to combine my 3dmouse with my hotas. I find myself using the 3dmouse for larger ships like you talked about as well as when landing or taking off a smaller ship. I've found that the 3dconnexion software and joystick gremlin isn't necessary as the device is plug and play compatible with windows and SC. Overall an excellent video that I'll be using to refer people to when they as about my own set up.
The 3D Connexion software LOOKS like it will let you do this, but I've had no success with it, hence why I did use Joystick Gremlin. The three modes I created deliver different levels of output.
Great idea!!! I just got hold of a spacemouse to do exactly this! However, i have a hard time getting the axis of the SM to return to center, thus my ship spins and spins and spins for days. How did you get it to return? Was it in Vjoy or joystickgremlin?
Now that is interesting. I don't know if that would work for me, because I'm using a HOSAS and trying to get good with racing and improve my dogfighting. But man, that is a really cool device. I didn't even know it existed.
This might be a good alternative to a throttle/second stick. While I'm happy with my right stick I'm really struggling with the left one due to the excessive movements you gotta make compared to just pushing a keyboard button
Yeah part of the appeal of this is all the axis in one hand. Splitting it between two sounds a bit mind-bendy though I'm sure useful once you've mastered it. Though I could see a future of stick in the right hand, strafe controlled by 3D mouse in the left. But I think my next move is to keep it in the right hand and pair it with a game throttle system.
@@expressmangaming650 that's also interesting and would probably work out with your usecase in mind! But a throttle is highly inconvienient in situations where you need quick thrust vectoring (at least imo) like dogfighting or racing which I both like to do, but that space mouse might actually be a viable option for those scenarios
I would absolutly like to see a setup video. I bought the compact version and the rotational axis are not working and Joystick Gremlin has no centering, so the inputs do not go back to zero. Getting some hints how to do it right would be great.
as soon as you started flying through the station rings, i said "dont fly through there" to myself 3 or 4 times before you went boom.. good show, though.
Very interesting! I would have liked to see the camera on the mouse when you were flying the ship since the input overlay doesn't convey too much as to how it's manipulation reflects the actions in flight!
Fancy seeing you here. Shouldn't you be watching Lil Terry?
@@ArmoredGenie he's with his mother today.
yeaa agree !!!
Much yes! @Expressman_Gaming

FANTASTIC! Thanks for the info! This is the solution I was looking for to playing Star Citizen on the road without taking my full HOTAS and rudder pedal setup through the airlines as it saves me the cost of luggage whenever I travel by airline. WOW!

I tried this years ago, many of us have, a good joystick with twist is better. More button access for starters, your arm/wrist doesn't get as tired, and they're less twitchy. Glad you're having fun though. Spacemice are KILLER for 3D modeling though. Another good option is the Thrustmaster T16000m FCS throttle, it has a mini-joystick on it for strafing, plus normal throttle and a knob for speed limiter.
id love to see a detailed setup method for this
Incoming.
i'm also excited for when this comes. i've got joystick gremlin detecting my spacemouse but ive seen other people have this same problem: it does not return the inputs to zero when i am not touching the spacemouse. this happens whether i set the remap to absolute or relative. thats because the problem is happening before it even goes through the remap to the vjoy device. it says the spacemouse is doing it.
Get one, im using this since years for viewport navigation in 3dsmax. It really helps but u have to get used to it.
@@denadelight I have one, I just don't know how to set it up for Star Citizen.
I plan on getting the Spacemouse Wireless for use in Star Citizen and Elit Dangerous and the Spacemouse Wireless Enterprise (the most expensive version) for use in Fusion 360 & Maya)
Finally, I will add a throttle unit.
On the throttle I have 6 LABELED buttons assigned to:
Cruise control, landing gear, request landing/docking, external view, vtol mode, open doors .
Thanks for the video, this seems to be a nice way to control a ship.
It should be called 6D Mouse since it gives input on 6 axis.
I agree.
Hmm ... very interesting.
Its funny seeing the exact tool I use everyday in Navis Works and didn't think about it being used to fly a ship.
Thanks for the video, can wait to see the setup part.
I love my HOTAS for close quarters, tight combat flying but I am def picking one of these up to feel it out with bigger ships. Thanks!
Loved that thing.
lol, i remember that. I was laughed at for using it.. but I didn't care.
Setup video and advanced configs in the works.
Please do a video on the technical setup! I am very intrigued by this. Not just for Star Citizen but to use it for my design work.
Hands on stick and stick and throttle and pedals and (dunno) and mouse (dunno) cockpit?
I bought one for 3D modeling a long time ago and love it in game. For low speed maneuvers there is nothing better for single point of control.
and for high speed ? is it difficult to maneuver?
this is kind of neat i like the idea of having it for cargo runs or salvaging vs my HOTAS settup for fighting. might need to get me one
Oh man, that's definitely something for me! Also flying bigger ships only. Thanks for this video! ;)
So far the elite V2 with couch citizen setup has been the best flight I have ever had. I have hotas... Dual sticks.. keyboard and mouse.. but the elite V2 and proper mounting. And being able to adjust tension on the sticks just makes for such an enjoyable experience
Ha, this took a while, some one finally realized the sweet benefit of 3D space mouse, i've been using it for 6 years now.
Great vid! i have been using a space mouse pro for 6 years, and i am supprised that there are not more 6-dof options out there. i agree with youir points on the advaneges of the contoller. definatly better for bigger ships and smoother flying, though i have trouble landing shots in a pvp setting. with the space mouse pro, i have 14 buttons i can hit. very usefull for landing and warp controll. id say that the biggest difference is i do all my flying decoupled. i am glad to see im not the only crazy one who went out of the way for the 6-dof expierence. XD
for this ammount of money, you can buy two thrustmaster t1600 with buttons and 4 way hats.
@@expressmangaming650 I’m looking forward to that video! ;)
Yeah it’s the most intuitive controller if you get the curves set up to alleviate fatigue. Decoupled mode is really nice. But when it’s normal, I like how you can just let go of it and it will eventually stop
The biggest problem I had with the big pro model with buttons was the rubber coating deteriorating.
LMAO the wing commander send off was brilliant...ooohh the nostalgia
Perhaps you can set modes in Joystick Gremlin that lets you toggle which devices are feeding input to vJoy?
So you have your ship...in your hand ? GENIUS !
Thanks for the video. I have looked at these mice before, but did not want to drop the $$$. I was like, no one else seams to be using them. must not be a thing. Looks like it might be just the ticket. Cool man, thanks for sharing.
Yeah just if you do take the plunge expect to spend some time working out the wrinkles. I'm glad I did though!
I have a carrack and travel a lot. Maybe this could replace two viral joy sticks? I really don’t think so by the look of the video. Any opinion?
A couple of things that may already have been mentioned. You can turn off the windows response to the 3D mouse by turning off the 3D connexion software. Also, I've used this pretty extensively and loved it until I realized there's a major problem (for me). That is the twist and translation axes are mechanically coupled, meaning that you cannot twist (yaw) 100% and translate (translate forward/backward) 100% at the same time. As a result I switched to using an Oculus rift controller instead. YMMV
I love 6dof controllers and this one is nice, but some of the older ones don't have the mechanical coupling.
Oculus rift controller? You have my attention.
If it hasn't been mentioned, a Tartarus or something could do you for buttons and a speed limiter where it's got the mousewheel on the left hand.
Or even just Alt+Rotate left/right
I'd love to see a setup vid.
(For left/right clicking, etc)
Also, with maybe a key combo, you can control throttle with the space mouse?
I'm actually preparing myself to order One, not for flying, but for câmera Control. But maybe flying may be interesting as well.
I'm interested in using it for camera control, but since it can apparently only be done with XML manipulation of the settings, I think it would conflict with flying. Maybe. I"m not sure.
@@expressmangaming650 could you make a tutorial?
That's really cool. I already have a 3D mouse for CAD, definitely trying this
I wonder how this would do in a HOSAM type of setup where the forward and back tilt is throttle.
Mau5 Approved.
Thanks for the vid!
Nothing beats dual sticks. I never look back again. Over 50+ keybindings and butter smooth controll over thrusters.
Great video. I have one of those stored away. I try to play SC with the keyboard and a joystick. I would like to see how you setup the 3D mouse. Thanks for the vids.
Yeah I suspect this video will create demand for the exact process I used to set it up. Works infinitely better with tweaking.
Have you tried it in decoupled mode? Would eliminate the jerky-jerkiness with the ship not constantly trying to stop itself when you let off forward throttle.
I've been meaning to. Near future experiment.
Would love for a follow-up showing how you set this up....thanks for the showing us this.
finally someone decided to try the crazy idea i got 7 years ago when i saw that 3d mouse.
Could you do a setup video. I would love that, because I have this thing (and SC) and I would love to use this for it
Impressive vid, shows a lot off info! Never seen it used before, thanks.
LOL
The space mouse would be far more useful ... and I'm staring at the Amazon page far too long.
As soon as I saw that it was the thing that they used in The Expanse, I knew I wanted one. But that pricetag though...
Man if I wasn't already HOSASing this would be sweet. Takes up way less space. Might be a great portable setup for traveling though!
I just got the enterprise version because I do 3d modeling and game design. I also plan on using it for gaming so that will be fun to try and set up
definitely interested in seeing your video on how to set this up, as i have one of these mice that I would like to get working as a star citizen method of input.
Twist and hold. And you're welcome!
Good stuff very unique i use twin sticks and gameglass not sure I'd use this setup of yours but i will pass this video into my org friends.
I have the wireless version. It's expensive. Dual Joysticks is the way to go if you need full PvP ship combat, although a Joy and Mouse is a popular option too. I typically have gone the lazy way of a Joypad, I'm happy to try it again with my expensive paper weight.
With regards to controlling the speed/throttle perhaps simple racing peddles would do.
Been using a 3d mouse for 3d apps for years. Also have a Thustmaster t1600. Will try using right hand for 3d mouse and left with joystick. Usually my left hand hold using a wacom Pen. Have a few fighters in SC so this might be perfect.
I'm going to give this a try. I don't think it'd beat sticks but I just don't have the desk space for sticks.
that looks like a fantastic tool for casual flying!
I would be very happy to see a guide to set up the spacemouse on SC, i have bought one, tried with gremlin, vjoy and hidhide, and havn't be able to use it on star citizen for now
Man that’s crazy I was just thinking about this the other day as I have one for cad but recently just started playing star citizen
Can you limit the sensitivity of the mouse? Like, a full 100% input on the mouse only relate to 10% or so throttle in SC?
The 3D Connexion software LOOKS like it will let you do this, but I've had no success with it, hence why I did use Joystick Gremlin. The three modes I created deliver different levels of output.
It seems cool but stick throttle and rudder is the way to go IMO. With the proper chair mounts, you can have a very healthy posture too.
Hosas and rudder is even better imho
Great idea!!!
I just got hold of a spacemouse to do exactly this!
However, i have a hard time getting the axis of the SM to return to center, thus my ship spins and spins and spins for days.
How did you get it to return? Was it in Vjoy or joystickgremlin?
Exact same problem I am running into. Looking forward to a full setup vid!
Now that is interesting. I don't know if that would work for me, because I'm using a HOSAS and trying to get good with racing and improve my dogfighting. But man, that is a really cool device. I didn't even know it existed.
The space mouse drivers interfere with VR controllers. In some games like Beat Saber it causes menus to scroll automatically without stopping.
This is very interesting. I have wanted a HOSAS setup for a while but I have no room for one. This might be a good alternative.
But a throttle is highly inconvienient in situations where you need quick thrust vectoring (at least imo) like dogfighting or racing which I both like to do, but that space mouse might actually be a viable option for those scenarios
definat ely worth mentioning it takes a while to get used to the spacemouse, i use one for cad and it took me a few hours to get any good at it
I would absolutly like to see a setup video. I bought the compact version and the rotational axis are not working and Joystick Gremlin has no centering, so the inputs do not go back to zero. Getting some hints how to do it right would be great.
It's in the works!
@@expressmangaming650 Not enough interest for a tutorial?
as soon as you started flying through the station rings, i said "dont fly through there" to myself 3 or 4 times before you went boom.. good show, though.
Using it for Revit and Sketchup, I ll try it in Sc. Cool!
I'm a HOSAM but flying the big ships I sometimes use just keyboard. This might work for my left hand. Interesting for sure.
