Arguably, the most 'meta' horror film ever made. It all makes complete sense once you understand that the ancient gods seeking those sacrifices is the audience that watches horror films with numerous expectations based on the genre's clichés and plot device tropes. In simpler terms, YOU are the ancient god they are trying to appease through sacrificial stereotypes. It's really kind of brilliant, and undoubtedly, one of the most original horror films ever made.
A couple fun points. 1. Rana recognized Amy Acker from Angel/Dollhouse, but Marty was also a major character in Dollhouse (Topher) and you briefly see Andrew from Buffy (new guy in The Trio) in the party scene. 2. Mickey mentioned how them being drugged explains their dumb decisions and how the sacrifice archetypes matched slasher movie cliches, down to the virgin being the final girl. This could suggest/retcon that a bunch of old slasher movies were just past successful runs of this ritual , but we never got to see behind the scenes.
Another fun point: there is a popular fan theory that this is the same world as FireFly and explains why they talk about "The Earth That Was". Humanity fled to the stars because Earth was lost to the Ancient Ones.
There are numerous countries that take part but only one has to get their form of sacrifice to succeed. If they all fail then yep, the ancient ones rise and destroy humanity.
Marty is ripped IRL thats why he has layered clothes, to look more stonerish. Also he was in always sunny, analyzing their poo sample "I just wanted to look at some poo!"
Yeah I saw somewhere that he was supposed to be shirtless during the lake scene but because he is so ripped it wouldn't fit his character so they had him keep his shirt on
They filmed this movie before they cast Thor (2011). Joss Whedon (who wrote this movie) brought Chris Hemsworth to MCU’s attention after Chris’ performance in this.
Chris had already auditioned for Thor but didn’t think he got it. Joss Whedon tried to convince him to try out for Captain America and the director Drew Goddard convinced him to try again for Thor.
Me and all my friends have been smoking weed daily for well over a decade and are nowhere near as dumb as Pat, don’t give him the benefit of blaming his stupidity on weed lol
The saw blade head guy holding the sphere was a reference to the Cenobites (Pinhead and Friends) from the Hellraiser series. There the sphere is actually a puzzle box that opens doorways to hell. If you haven't at least seen the first two Hellraiser films, they would be an awesome watch for this channel. Outstanding practical effects similar to "The Thing" and one of the most interesting and terrifying demons I've ever seen.
Pat, thank you for laughing at the Chris hemsworth death scene! I’ve always interpreted it as classic whedon comedy but so few reactors seem to laugh at it. That shit had me rolling in the theater

@@rexibhazoboa7097 Its a common meme that it is, due to the numerous similarities, but it is not actually canon. It’s kind of like how Event Horizon is the best Warhammer 40k movie. Things they have in common: 1) Anomalous objects and entities. 2) Said entities are contained by a clandestine organization operating globally. 3) Lesser anomalies used to contain greater anomalies. 4) Disposable D-Class taken from outside the organization to be sacrificed against their will to further containment. 5) Containment breaches resulting in mass death within the underground containment facility. 6) Advanced technology such as force fields being kept from the public. 7) The use of aerosolized mind altering substances to manipulate members of the public. 8) A K-Class scenario occurring as a result of a failure in the ritual containing several pluripotent reality warping pistiphages. 9) Emotional disassociation of the staff who have become so acclimated to the horror that they treat it like a casual joke, until the containment breach. And more. There’s definitely a large amount of overlap. I wouldn’t call it a copy, since not only does it do plenty of original stuff, but also because SCP Itself was playing off (or subverting) several horror/conspiracy tropes that predate both works, and Joss Whedon had an established history of using some of those elements (Compare, for example, The Watchers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who also share many of these traits). But there is enough of an overlap that you can easily imagine the movie as taking place in the SCP universe without really needing to stretch at all.
So I have an interesting story about seeing this movie for the first time. It came out around my sisters birthday and so for her birthday our whole family went to go see it. My 3 sisters were excited to see it and me and my brother didn't care, we wanted to stay home and play video games. We went to go see it and when we came out the dynamic had flipped ! My sisters left saying it was stupid and didn't like it, meanwhile me and my brother thought it was awesome and bought it on DVD as soon as possible.
I absolutely love this movie. I saw this in theaters going in completely blind. My family asked me to come and I didn't want to because "Cabin in the woods" sounded so generic lol. I hadn't seen any trailers for it so I had no interest in it. I'm glad I saw it because it's sooo good! The film is a meta-commentary on horror movies and horror movie audiences, & the need for ever more gruesome deaths to appease them. Effectively, WE, the audience, are the "ancient ones" if we don't like how a horror movie is written we hate the movie, get upset, essentially the world ending in this meta horror movie. I also love how they got the personalities of the characters completely wrong, the guy they had as the jock was a rhodes scholar, the "smart" one was super athletic, the virgin was sleeping with her professor, which I guess leaves the jester a virgin. Now I heard about this but I don't know if it's true or not but apparently the stoner guy did not get in the lake because they couldn't have him take his shirt off because he was actually even more fit and cut than Thor and the other guy.😅
Fun bit of trivia, during the lake scene where they are all swimming Marty does not join in because the actor playing him was actually more ripped than Thor and the other guy. You can kinda notice it in some of the action scenes.
While Whedon co-wrote and produced this, gotta give the props to Drew Goddard! He was the main writer and director of this, as well as the creator of the Netflix Daredevil show, executive producer of the Good Place, writer of The Martian, and writer/director of Bad Times at the El Royal. He’s one of the best creatives working today!!
They're not draining blood from the kills. When the first lever is pulled, a vial is broken. Could be blood from the sacrificed characters, could just be random blood.
I always thought it was just supposed to "represent" the victim. but i suppose they could have gotten a sample of blood from somewhere. since they had enough access to change jules' hair dye and such.
Pat's so funny because some shows and movies he has no idea what's going on despite very obvious reveals and others he guesses everything 1000% correctly and makes deeply thoughtful observations the others don't. I'm never sure where his expertise lies because it seems weirdly random, but I've really come to love his presence because of it.
Pat is so crucial to this team. He's "The tenth man", I don't remember where I learned this but basically in a team of 10 people, you need at least 1 person with a completely opposing opinion, just to keep the majority in check and ensure they didn't miss anything. I need Pat to stay himself and not change
So, about the Unicorn. its never been confirmed officially, but its possibly a Terry Pratchett reference. In Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel, "Lords and Ladies", a group of witches try to prevent an invasion of evil, psychotic Elves from an alternate reality. one of the harbingers of that invasion is a portal opening up and the Queen Of The Elves' pet unicorn escaping into the Discworld. and the first thing it does when it arrives is impale a man with it's horn. I dunno when or why some marketing company decided to start putting unicorns on little girl's clothes and toys, but in mythology, they could be quite vicious creatures in some stories, sometimes even being carnivorous. the only real common thread being they could only be controlled by virgins, which lead to them sometimes being a symbol for purity. which i guess could explain the little girl thing, but who knows.
1) The system of the sacrifice is a collection of the typical tropes that are expected in western horror movies. The archetypes of those various characters (the jock, the fool, the ho, etc.) are those you meet in every single western horror movie. The "virgin" is the final girl. Sometimes she dies, sometimes she doesn't. But she's the one who remains until the end. It *HAS TO* be like that, otherwise "the Ancient Ones" will be unsatisfied. And Sigourney Weaver... the Director... is literally a movie director. 2) The archetype of Japanese horror are probably different. And the scene from Tokyo was reminding of the most famous Japanese horrors (the Ring, the Grudge, etc.). They mention that Japan and the USA are the only ones to have had constant wins in the past, saving the day for everyone. It's a reference to popularity of horror movies produced in the USA and Japan, which both have a big tradition. 3) They also reference a debacle in '98. I have no idea what they're talking about, but it's probably a reference to some horror movie that failed in '98. Either that, or they're talking about the ending of Buffy season 1, and maybe about how it was critiqued at the time. I dunno. 4) The Ancient Ones, with their very human looking hands coming down to crash the hopes of everyone, are *THE AUDIENCE.* Specifically, horror movie fans. "We're not the only ones watching, kid." "Gotta keep the client satisfied." The deaths, the horror tropes and even the sex scenes are there to placate these unsatiable, cruel, abominable monsters... sitting in the movie theatre. "In 8 minutes, the sun will rise, and they will rise up wailing" (or something, I don't remember the exact quote). 8 minutes later, the movie ends, the light go up in the theatre, and horror fans will start complaining that they weren't satisfied (as they always do). 5) "What is Dollhouse"???? Guys. 😒 Dollhouse reaction. Now. Go! 🤣
For 3: 98 is referencing The Faculty, a horror movie from 1998 where a mind control drug was beaten by the teens doing drugs. Hence it being a failure on the part of the Chem Department.
They reference a precious failure due to the Chemistry department. This is alluding to The Faculty (1998), an body snatchers movie where the mind control is beaten by teenage drug use. So frankly they should have seen this coming.
yooo this is one of the most iconic horror movies ever imo, some people put alot of emphasis on that title being exclusive for older movies but i think this one really influenced alotttt in the genre moving forward for more "modern set" horror movies
Whedon done a really good job here as Producer and Co-writer with Director Drew Goddard, who also wrote many episodes of BTVS and Angel in their final seasons. Kinda like a more gory Scream in the sense all the Horror Film Tropes are used here to great effect. A couple of Buffyverse actors thrown in here Tom Lenk who was Andrew in BTVS and Angel and also played Cyrus in BTVS too, and Amy Acker, Fred from Angel and Dr Claire Saunders in the most underrated Whedon show Dollhouse, we also has Fran Kranz here as well who was Topher in Dollhouse. A really good concept here with some crazy scary monsters, and great special effects as we never know where the film is really going. The killings are very graphically brutal, but work well within the story. All in all a good entertaining film.
Dark and twisted, a great horror movie. And very funny.Whedon reportedly told Kenneth Branagh, who was going to direct Thor, that he had his Thor in his movie.
One of my Top 10 favorite Horror films!! I love how it takes all the tropes, ties them together, and empowers the kids to fight back!! The world ending? Oh well!!
This movie was filmed in the 00s, but it's original company shut down, so it got released after Thor came out. Ironically, this movie is the reason Chris Hemsworth got the role of Thor. Originally it was Liam who was the lead choice, but then Joss mentioned to the producers that he'd worked with this other Hemsworth brother who would be perfect. Caused a bit of a riff between the brothers for a few years.
Fun fact about production This movie was filmed before Chris Hemsworth was Thor, so he wasn't as famous The Wolf make out scene used a fake wolf head, because: 1-Duh, and 2- where they filmed it was illegal to use actual animal heads; but the SFX team put sugar on its tongue, so it wasn't as bad for Jules' actress Everyone was quite chill and having a great time in the set, including the monsters, they tried to make the movie as practical as possible The big monster cube zoo scene had many shootings and combined with an AI that wouldn't make the boxes not collide, the boxes had everything and every size, for an example, for giants they just made a smaller box, like a giant centipede was in a teeny tiny box, making it huge in concept, there were a lot of cool tricks involved in this Sergoine Weaver only accepted this part because the Werewolf was radical to her, and every day she was like "is the Werewolf here today?" Like a little kid
My favorite genius thing about this movie is the fact that every horror movie archetype applied to the characters were incorrect and them trying to force those stereotypes on who they thought looked correct for the role instead of playing on their already present personalities led to their demise. Holden was given the Scholar but he was The Athlete (he’s absolutely ripped and caught a football from 3 stories down) Curt was given the Athlete but he was the Scholar (he’s a sociology major and the books Dana had in the beginning were ones he read and could recommend to her) Jules was given the Wh*re but she was actually the Fool (she had a very performative personality as you could see from her dare and her lap dance which she was only being hyper-sexual due to her hair dye) Dana was given the virgin but she was actually the Wh*re (having an affair with her teacher and naturally standing in front of a wide open window and around her friends while in her underwear) Marty was given the fool but HE was the Virgin, the one who survived, the one who (even beyond his drug use) made the right logical decisions to make it to the end of the “movie”, the one who wanted to prioritize the safety of the group rather than just having fun. It’s such an awesome concept and Marty is one of my favorite final boys ever.
I always attributed the blood from each of the vials that they break when someone dies as, these people had already infiltrated their lives and a lot of the sacrifices seemed like genuinely good people before the insanity starts. How much do you want to bet they were all active blood donors so all the organization had to do was find out the places where they gave at and made sure those packs ended up with them for the ceremony. That was always my head canon at least.
There are 2 Buffy veterans in this movie . Amy Acker who played Fred in Angel. And Tom Lenk was Andrew of the Trio in the 6th season plays one of the technicians who bet in the betting pool
The other Fan theory about this film, is that the Puppeteers are a division of Wolfram and Hart from Buffy/Angel and that the release of the Antient Ones is why Humanity abandons Earth, which leads to Firefly. Basically this movie is the thing that connects the rest of the Whedonverse.
the reason our stoner friend is wearing so many layers is because the actor is absolutely shredded. they didnt want the stoner being more ripped than the jock lol.
Whenever I watch the monster purge scene I always imagine Captain Hindsight from south park saying "See that big red button there? They shouldn't have installed that!" 😂
Ah, I love the way this movie lampoons horror movie culture. I adore how smart it is and how it’s NOT the movie it’s advertised as. One of the most pleasant surprises I’ve had with a movie.
Inmean you can dislike this movie but the intention is pretty clear from the get go. It's a metaphor for making a Horror movie. The writers have to create archetypical characters and they make them chose irrational decisions so they entertain us, the gods. It's not that complicated.
in the commentary track someone (Fran Kranz maybe?) mentions that the thermos bong prop did indeed actually work, and it was tested by some cast and crew.
This is stall absolutely one of my favorite horror satires ever, and Micky hitting the nail on the head with the we are the customers line that got overlooked was a really good observation. But I love all the horror subversions and how they play with the tropes while paying respect to them.
This movie was filmed 2 years before Thor and then it was shelved, if Thor didn't blow up I doubt we would have ever gotten this movie but Thor did blow up and the studio saw a chance to capitalize on Hemsworth's sudden fame
It still amazes me how few people realize that we are the ancient ones. We the real life audience are the ones watching them get killed, and as much as we hope they all live, if nobody dies than we hate the movie. Sigourney Weaver is the director and all the techs are the studio and production crew. All the questions asking why can't we do this or that to save everybody is just us trying to convince ourselves we didn't walk into a movie hoping to see some gore.
In case you haven’t figured it out, this whole movie is a meta joke! The Ancient Ones are a metaphor for us viewers of horror movies, and the classic horror tropes we expect to see and be entertained by
I don't think they did. If I'm being honest, I've not seen many (if any) reactors who didn't understand the meta commentary. This I believe is the first time I've seen people not grasp it.
My favorite anecdote about this film is that they did an early screening before it was released with a Q&A with the director after. One of the audience members asked "Is there going to be a sequel?" and without missing a beat, Goddard replied "Did you see the ending to my movie???"
Imagine it like this. The ancient ones are watching a series of different tv shows. Each show is a different country. The ancient ones have laid out “These are the ways we want the different shows to play out, and this is how we want each show to end. We’ll tolerate you screwing most of them up, because what else do you expect from tv these days, but if you don’t get at least *one* of them right, and give us the kind of show we want, we’re gonna be really pissed.”
It's like the year Hereditary then the series Haunting of Hill House came out and we were all like "hey, these are actually OK. Don't need to start the apocalypse anymore."
Even if it’s considered passé to cite a “best of” album as your favorite, The Cabin in The Woods is such a fantastic horror pastiche that it’s honestly one of my favorite horror comedies. It’s right up there with Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil.
You guys have a winning formula with exposing Rana and Pat to horror movies. Navi is a good addition as well. 3 pillow clinchers on the couch, while Micky crosses his arms and takes it all internally (slowly going gray). Rana is actually pulling a Micky for most of it, but she still goes back to the pillow for the scariest parts. 💀
This has always been one of my fav horror movies. I’ve seen it a dozen times. I love that you guys have seen it! Now i just need a reaction to Predestination and The Mist and i’ll be complete.
There are no blood drains, they show when they break a blood vial when they pull the lever. Once each of them dies they pulled the lever it breaks the vial which fulfills that sacrifice.
This movie is so meta. Think of the ancient Gods as the audience, the people in the bunker as the filmmakers and the kids as the characters in a horror movie. They’ve got to make an interesting story for the sacrifices to keep the ancient ones/audience happy.
If you like the outro song, it's "Last" by Nine Inch Nails. It's so awesome, I always make a point of recommending it to people who see The Cabin in The Woods.
So before this movie came out there wasn’t any hunger games the closest thing we had was The Matrix.. so not many people knew what they were getting into with this movie. And didn’t immediately assume there was some sort of simulation thing going on.
You should check out The Wolfman with Benico Del Toro , Anthony Hopkins, and Emily Blunt and The Howling(the first one directed by Joe Dante) and An American Werewolf in London.
I do wish the forcefield wasn’t shown as they arrive. The bird could have swooped up and still given a jump scare through a screech or something. As it veered away abruptly

@@jhornacek fair maybe I’ve also seen a lot of reactions where they fully remember and it doesn’t play as well. I still love this movie and that scene I just wish it hadn’t been so clearly shown for my own viewing experience. Maybe the bird hits the forcefield but it’s not the focus of that shot?
@@robwilliamson5082 Personally, I think enough crazy stuff happens after that first forcefield shot that most viewers have forgotten about the force field by the time Thor tries to make that jump.
Hang on, even if Marty had died first, the world would have still ended. Because the mind-altering chemicals didn't work on him and he was most certainly not a fool, homie was the only one who managed to figure out what was going on and how to escape. So even if he'd died first, the world was done for because his blood had already been presented to the Ancient Ones as "the Fool" without him actually being the Fool. Actually, when you go back, the facility starts violently shaking when they present Marty's blood. Probably for the exact same reason. I can't remember if the shaking only happens that one time, but if it does then that was the moment they actually fucked up.
one of my favourite movies!!! the movie is supposed to be a satire of horror movies and cliches so they had to be forcefully changed into stereotypes in order to satisfy the audience(ancient ones) the "punished" thing is mostly because victims of horror movies are often teenagers/young adults and most of the characters that do "bad" things on screen like sex or drugs are usually the first ones to die vs the "pure" ones like the virgin and sometimes the everyman character probably left over sentimentality from american purity culture from 60s-80s , during the late 80s and 90s there was a lot more movies subverting those cliches

@@joeg8304holy shit! You just blew my mind!!
@@joeg8304 true, except for The Faculty. They mentioned this at the start of the film (the 1998 ritual that failed because of Chemicals Department).

There are numerous countries that take part but only one has to get their form of sacrifice to succeed. If they all fail then yep, the ancient ones rise and destroy humanity.

This was recorded pre-Thor but it was released post the Thor movie

My perfect "cabin" double feature to watch would be Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, Cabin In The Woods.

I maintain that this is the best SCP Foundation movie adaptation ever made.
is this truly part of the SCP foundation community?
@@rexibhazoboa7097 Its a common meme that it is, due to the numerous similarities, but it is not actually canon. It’s kind of like how Event Horizon is the best Warhammer 40k movie. Things they have in common:
1) Anomalous objects and entities.
@@rexibhazoboa7097 - It might as well be!
So sad that no one have picked up the SCP materials. There's a lot of money to be made from those.
Fun fact the coffee cup bing was a real working prop and cost 20,000 to make
They're not draining blood from the kills.

Pat is so crucial to this team. You will NEVER forget the ending to The Mist. Polarizing movie but I loved it.
I dunno.
4) The Ancient Ones, with their very human looking hands coming down to crash the hopes of everyone, are *THE AUDIENCE.*
Specifically, horror movie fans.
"We're not the only ones watching, kid."
"Gotta keep the client satisfied."
The deaths, the horror tropes and even the sex scenes are there to placate these unsatiable, cruel, abominable monsters... sitting in the movie theatre.
Guys. 😒
Dollhouse reaction.
Now. Go!
Bloody BRILLIANT 😂😂
You also can see Boomer, Tank and Witch from Left 4 Dead in elevators
yooo this is one of the most iconic horror movies ever imo, some people put alot of emphasis on that title being exclusive for older movies but i think this one really influenced alotttt in the genre moving forward for more "modern set" horror movies
One of the best horror movies! And it explains the dumb things in horror like splitting up

Fun fact about production
This movie was filmed before Chris Hemsworth was Thor, so he wasn't as famous
The Wolf make out scene used a fake wolf head, because: 1-Duh, and 2- where they filmed it was illegal to use actual animal heads; but the SFX team put sugar on its tongue, so it wasn't as bad for Jules' actress
Everyone was quite chill and having a great time in the set, including the monsters, they tried to make the movie as practical as possible
The big monster cube zoo scene had many shootings and combined with an AI that wouldn't make the boxes not collide, the boxes had everything and every size, for an example, for giants they just made a smaller box, like a giant centipede was in a teeny tiny box, making it huge in concept, there were a lot of cool tricks involved in this
Sergoine Weaver only accepted this part because the Werewolf was radical to her, and every day she was like "is the Werewolf here today?" Like a little kid
Blind watchers "oh no"
Should definitely watch Tucker and Dale vs Evil
My favorite genius thing about this movie is the fact that every horror movie archetype applied to the characters were incorrect and them trying to force those stereotypes on who they thought looked correct for the role instead of playing on their already present personalities led to their demise.
Holden was given the Scholar but he was The Athlete (he’s absolutely ripped and caught a football from 3 stories down)
Curt was given the Athlete but he was the Scholar (he’s a sociology major and the books Dana had in the beginning were ones he read and could recommend to her)
Jules was given the Wh*re but she was actually the Fool (she had a very performative personality as you could see from her dare and her lap dance which she was only being hyper-sexual due to her hair dye)
Dana was given the virgin but she was actually the Wh*re (having an affair with her teacher and naturally standing in front of a wide open window and around her friends while in her underwear)
Marty was given the fool but HE was the Virgin, the one who survived, the one who (even beyond his drug use) made the right logical decisions to make it to the end of the “movie”, the one who wanted to prioritize the safety of the group rather than just having fun.
It’s such an awesome concept and Marty is one of my favorite final boys ever.
There go the yaegerist cheering for the end of the world again 😂😂
Hahaha fun
I always attributed the blood from each of the vials that they break when someone dies as, these people had already infiltrated their lives and a lot of the sacrifices seemed like genuinely good people before the insanity starts. How much do you want to bet they were all active blood donors so all the organization had to do was find out the places where they gave at and made sure those packs ended up with them for the ceremony. That was always my head canon at least.
YESSSSS I WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT THIS MOVIE AND HOW ITS SO UNDERRATED
This movie was more of a comedy than a horror 😂😂
Its actually scary because it gets realistic
It's sorta both.
There are 2 Buffy veterans in this movie . Amy Acker who played Fred in Angel. And Tom Lenk was Andrew of the Trio in the 6th season plays one of the technicians who bet in the betting pool
The moment where this movie turns into EVERY HORROR MOVIE EVER is when it becomes an all-time classic for me.
They said earlier that that the plot was sold over and over and Marty wasn’t killed that hacking sound was Marty killing the zombie with a trowel.

One of my favorite horror/comedies. Fun twists, creative kills and creatures. Plus commentary on society, movies, and fans to boot!
She says, "I'm not a virgin" and SW says, "we do the best we can"
My favorite anecdote about this film is that they did an early screening before it was released with a Q&A with the director after.
Pat was a surprise to be in this. Wasn’t looking too closely at the thumbnail and didn’t notice him hiding behind his pillow, lol
Ever since I saw this movie, I imagine every single horror movie takes place in this universe.
This movie is so meta. Think of the ancient Gods as the audience, the people in the bunker as the filmmakers and the kids as the characters in a horror movie. They’ve got to make an interesting story for the sacrifices to keep the ancient ones/audience happy.

The "bondage and pain" guy was clearly to represent Hellraiser
one of my favourite movies!!! the movie is supposed to be a satire of horror movies and cliches so they had to be forcefully changed into stereotypes in order to satisfy the audience(ancient ones) the "punished" thing is mostly because victims of horror movies are often teenagers/young adults and most of the characters that do "bad" things on screen like sex or drugs are usually the first ones to die vs the "pure" ones like the virgin and sometimes the everyman character probably left over sentimentality from american purity culture from 60s-80s , during the late 80s and 90s there was a lot more movies subverting those cliches
