The current IV (He has been with them since 2021, And is the third guitarist since the beginning of ST) was a major contributor to his last band. The very first IV was also a writer but there was a falling out over credit and left in 2017. Second IV joined in 2017 and left in 2020 and is still remains on good term with them.

That's called a motif, and many good songs have one, but Sleep Token really rides their motif throughout the song, turning it into an ostinato. TMBTE is really the first album where they change up their formula, but even through it, they have several songs that still fall back into this formula. It's a very effective writing technique.

It’s funny that you also picked up on the gospel/worship sound. I’m betting II (the drummer) has gospel background as well as jazz. His fills are clean, are numerous, always feel pointed/purposeful, and very groovy.
The worship sound is very intentional. The band is a bit like Ghost in that the singer, going by Vessel, is a "character" and the band itself has a backstory. The backstory for Sleep Token being that Vessel is the sole remaining devotee to the forgotten god Sleep, and that all his music is, basically, worship music for that god. He is Sleep's "vessel", hence, he is VESSEL.
I highly strongly suggest their song Bloodsport (from the room below) It's not a gory song, just vessel (lead singer) singing raw while playing piano. It's one of the if not THE most beautiful song I've ever heard
If you truly want to run down this rabbit hole like I have, do this. Remember this song and moment. Listen to every song in succession from Sundowning. Really pay attention to Vessel's lyrics. Move to the the 2nd CD and repeat. Stay on each song in order and again, really pay attention to what Vessel is saying. Complete the story with the new CD. When you get to the final song, when it ends, it will all make sense. I have never in my life been taken through the emotions and twists and turns across these 3 Masterpieces. There isn't any true words to describe what Vessel and II have created together. I have seen them live, 3 times. There is no band on earth like them.
I started listening late and listened to TMBTE first and while I felt so many emotions it didn't hit. Once I learned I had to go back and listen to the other albums and came back...I wasn't the same...I was emotionally devastated for WEEKS.😭😭😭
Great reaction! Since you are already in this for the long haul I would honestly recommend that you just listen to all three albums in order. It is so worth it in the end. Though "Jaws" is their first single after their "One" and "Two" EPs, and it is one of my absolute favorite Sleep Token songs. No other band has ever made me feel the way I feel when I listen to ST.
I have recently discovered Sleep Token in the past month. Ever since I have had their 3 albums on repeat daily. The way these guys combine so many genres just absolutely blows my mind. They do remind me of hymns and things of the like we grew up listening to in church. I have subscribed to you because I want to follow with you on this ST journey. Also, because you are a southerner like me as well. 😂
A good start to the trilogy, you need to go in order and the next one is the offering, and it's a damn cool song, and if the lyrics are interesting, think about it, it's not very simple.

It's cool that ur starting out with the albums, but you're sorely missing out on ST lore by skipping over One and Two, their EPs. They're a bit less high production value (One was actually self released) and obviously a product of a less experienced Vessel but they are heartbreaking and beautiful and their narratives tie in to later work
