Dear Grandma, I grew up in upstate NY, and the back of the house was built out over the lake. I caught thousands of all varieties of freshwater fish. I wasn't real fond of eating fish (or much else) as a young guy, but I dutifully cleaned them and Mom cooked them for hundreds of meals. You are correct that fish are an excellent, free protein source. Hugs.

Thank you Grandma for sharing the info. We used to have a boat by the Chesapeake bay. We fished for Spanish mackerel, perch, striped bass and crabs. Slim pickings and we only had enough for ourselves because we ate all we caught. We since have sold the boat since its so expensive and labor intensive but we miss the fresh fish. LOL. 😅

Growing up in Texas, my mom cooked a lot of catfish. Many don’t like it as it’s called a bottom feeder or trash fish, but it is delicious fried. I think that it’s something you had to grow up with in order to like it. Even though my mom was from Chicago, when she and her family moved to Oklahoma, she was a young girl, so she appreciated a lot of southern food.

I used to fish a lot when I was younger. The fish in the area were Flathead and Yellowtail. I used to be able to buy little portable single use bbq/grills for $1 so would often cook the fish right next to the water. Working for the Navy I was always near water so during work I'd throw a few lines in the water and would end up with free dinner. Thanks for the video Grandma.

Hi grandma and grandpa , what a blessing that you get this fish not only given to you, but it’s already cleaned and filleted . And how nice of it it is for you to share with others. I love fish as you know ! We fish her in Florida often and ironically the the fish, you catch most often is grouper and sheepshead, as well as Hogfish here in Florida. Hogfish is the best tasting fish ever. To me, it sort taste like a cross between cold water lobster and crab. It’s a ferry nice white delicate meat and actually are pink with a crest on the top and sound like a pig when you take them out of the water when they snort 😅. I had no idea that species of fish were up there in the north like that.
I hope you are both well and I am so glad that you posted this video as I was wondering how you both were……stay well and God Bless you both ! ….Brian

Growing up in my teens we use to fish for flounder. It helped supplement our diet as we were low income. We also went out on rowboats to do crabbing. The cost of renting the row boats was minimal and the amount of crabs we caught was amazing. I learned to clean large baskets of crabs we made crab spaghetti sauce. Its was yummy. Your fish looks interesting. You will have some delicious fish dinners.

I've never been much for fishing, being more of a plant and mushroom forager in retirement. One of my favorite fishing memories, though, is a camping trip to Salmon la Sac when I was in my teens. The river was fun to wade and fish in, and the rainbow trout, rolled in cornmeal, and fried in butter over the open fire, was heavenly. It remains one of the most delicious fish I've eaten.
    Enjoy your friend's generous gifts - he's a real sweetheart. ❤🐡❤🐟❤
This reminds me that every year I start National Poetry Writing Month off with a fish poem, because the French custom on April 1st is to stick a paper fish on someone's back or play other jokes, and say 'Poisson d'Avril!' (April fish!) when discovered. Here is one from 2020, called 'Fish List', which spoofs list poems and wish lists; I hereby dedicate it to your friend. Best read aloud!
    Fish List

In Michigan you "Smelt Dip" When the small fish run in the spring, you just stand in waist-deep water and scoop up hundreds with a net. There are millions. I remember being knocked over by them. Pan fried they are delicious. The trouble is, what to do with thousands you dipped at one time! Our generation "saved money: by eating everything....no picking eating.

I always giggled while telling my family and snooty acquaintances that I caught crabs in San Fran! LMAO Then saltwater here in NZ...snapper mostly. Kingfish and caught a few baby sharks. I do love all kinds of seafood. A friend dives for crayfish..a relative of the yummy lobster! Lobster is my FAV! I adore catfish done southern style. @@GrandmaFeral Thanks Grandma! I'm hanging in there. I do have two new rescue feline babies! Yay! First one is an Ocicat named BonBon. She will turn 1yo on Dec 30th. Then another girl from another rescue place approved me to adopt Charlotte. She is a very dainty b/w tuxedo baby! She is 1.5yo. They love being sisters! Omg they have a great time together! Charlotte had a really bad beginning to life and she has come along so well! She was dumped in the country and found her way to a farm for help. She never gave up trying to get close to the farmers. They knew she must have been someone's in the past and was dumped. So they knew there was hope. They surrendered her to a rescue place. I saw her pic on an advert and fell in love! I love both of them so much!! They make me smile again. No one will ever replace my Bella girl but these too are characters and make me happy! Just wanted to fill you in. 🥰 I keep in touch with both rescue ladies and they both say I'm an feline whisperer! BonBon's foster mom has another rescue furkid that I met when I picked up BonBon and he never opens up to anyone but he rolled over for me to tickle tummy! She wants me to have Sylvester soon. He is a tuxedo boy. I'm thinking about it. I told her after I move into my new place, I will be able to take him. BonBon knows Sylvester already. So should be fun!! 😁🥳 Big hugs!!

Grandma could you tell people to save all their fat drippings such as bacon fat, chicken fat and different ways they used it in recipes to replace butter that was rationed. I heard that they used bacon fat in place of butter on bread or toast. I have used chicken fat in my Dumplings for years. Also it is a big ingredient in Jewish cooking. I particularly enjoy using bacon fat when making popcorn on the stove top.
