Vintage Ermine Frosting Recipe - Cooked Flour Buttercream Frosting

- This is a vintage recipe for Ermine Frosting which is a cooked flour buttercream frosting. My Mom learned how to make it in the 1930's when she first learned how to cook. When I was growing up, she always made it for birthday cakes and special cakes for family occasions. Everyone loved her cakes and she was well-known for them. The original recipe called for margarine and Crisco. Over the years, we have changed the recipe to use butter instead since we no longer eat margarine or Crisco. It's not as fluffy using butter instead of margarine/shortening, but we like the flavor better and prefer to avoid the trans fats and refined seed oils.

@GrandmaFeral Thank you! I did actually get out of the house and out to dinner. Went to Milleridge Inn. Hadn't been in years. Used to go pretty frequently with my mother and friends (many of whom now departed). As you know, it dates back to Colonial times, and (as you don't know) I'm officially old now, so it made sense.😉

I'm excited to give this recipe a try. I'm not the greatest in the kitchen but I think I could handle this. The cake taker brings back memories because we had a lot of Tupperware in the 70s. Happy Birthday Grandpa 🎈🎂

Thanks so much for sharing this with us, icings on birthday cakes are notorious for being too sweet, especially ones purchased from the bakery, nice to know this one isn't too sweet, usually Grandpa treats us to his baking so a nice change, (not that Grandpa can't bake!) Well my favorite show is over now for the season, All Creatures Great and Small, on Masterpiece PBS. 😢 But never fear, they have advanced production of two more years 😊. My mother still has her Tupperware deviled egg container since 1975. Her cake container that I remember was a stainless steel like dome with the black handle on the top that one would place right over the cake on the plate? But I know she don’t have that anymore. Grandpa’s favorite is a soft serve ice cream in a cone with lots of sprinkles on top. Once the weather warms up we will have to go and have an ice cream treat. My Momma had a Tupperware cake holder like yours too but I think it was a different color. I have Tupperware cake holders too but different than yours except for my square one which was my Mom's that I got when she passed away and her's is over 50 years old.

That black forest cake looks delicious! I wrote down the recipe! It is nice you aren't using margarine or Crisco shortening. I am surprised when people still do use those and I am tempted to say something about it, and I usually do comment on videos where they still use either of those. Nowadays, eveyone should know. I don't care if Aunt Sadie used Crisco, just change the recipe to butter! 😊

OK Grandma...that looks YUM as usual! My thought at first was to drag my tongue across the top of cake so it's all mine BUT when you said it was Grandpa's birthday cake..I thought Oh Damn, I better behave! 😂 I agree with you about all butter. I don't use that other malarky either. 😅 However, maybe making double batch of all butter wouldn't go amiss! 😂😂 Oh and the 🍒 filling looked divine!!
