Thank you u/spirelld for finding, editing and sharing this with me also I just realized the interviewer is the host of America’s Funniest Home Videos lol I was wondering why he looked so familiar
How’s the song in there twice 😭 lol
I love how there's this buildup of Elliott being the angry punky guy.... only to be shattered by a stellar performance of Clementine. Much love. Hope everyone is healthy and well.
It really makes me wonder what they expected😂safe to say he blew their expectations out of the water.was def beautiful
I think part of him enjoyed the surreal silliness of it. You could almost see the shallow glaze melt on there faces, when they started to have an actual emotional connection to the song.
Yes!
This is amazing. In the first part it’s this goofy breakfast show where Elliott looks more awkward than i have ever seen him. Then he gets his guitar, and presently a spell settles down on the entire set.
Absolutely.
Played so nicely...everyone definitely became silent as Elliott sang this tune. Absolutely crushed it, in spite of so many superficial little jabs at him. Love how he shakes it off immediately like a true G. I really enjoyed the look of memorization in the eyes of everyone in the room. The host was tapping his foot- it's like the music just humbles ya. His music cuts through like a knife. RIP, Legend.
they were all being nice and light hearted imo. what a beautiful moment 💙
Nobody was taking jabs at him. It’s just a fun light hearted show. I think you misread it
The host was but times were different back then.people weren’t used to such real shit.i remember those days
Amazing. This is honestly one of my favorite performances of his and I come back and watch every once in a while. You can just see how strongly his music cuts through and pacifies anyone. And honestly as goofy and “phony” as the tv personalities may seem I felt they were quite kind and respectful throughout. 90s were an era man.
Watch the puppet bopping, the feets thumping, the eyes entranced- they were captivated.
03:34 this lady looked like she was about to burst into tears. Nostrils flaring. Maybe thinking of a past lover?
03:51 this lady is awestruck... Seems to experiencing a musical revelation lol. Mouth agape, subtle excitement in her eyes.
04:11 And Tom certainly seems to be pickin' up what Elliott's puttin' down!
The awestruck lady is Jessica Hecht (she played Gretchen in Breaking Bad)
@@iamianwalsh bro no way!! This is so priceless for that reason alone too!! 😂
The lady about to cry is Laurie Hibberd, I think.
AHA not surprised to find you here at all.
@@iamianwalshholy shit😂 thanks for that connection, thought she looked familiar
Couldn't get a more 90s set asthetic.
This is so weird and funny to me in a lot of ways 😅 Lovely version of Clementine. Thanks for sharing! ❤
Wow.... the effect of real poetry on everyone there is palpable.
aw hah his hand was shaking when he went to take a sip of his drink. The audience was so captivated... How can you not be? This is amazing footage... Tom Bergeron and Elliott Smith lol. Not gonna lie I laughed at his morning person joke. Thanks Mymaya. Any new interview or intimate preformance is such precious footage to come across. I hope a lot more surfaces in the future.
Yeah my heart went out to him. I saw his hand even shaking between changing chords.
The way he's drinking his coffee, it made me think he had finished it a long time ago but still kept pretending just as something to do. Or maybe i'm just projecting!
Yea he mentions and gestures it at 4:56
Shaking from alcohol maybe?
You can feel the awe of all the show's guests, he definitely got himself a few new fans in the studio that day.
But it was too fucking awkward and he's like that with almost everyone can no one comprehend that it does not matter what the fuck he writes or sings if he's stuck with that life condition
@@paulviviani5217 It was a strange show to be on. The only thing that matters is what he writes and sings, what are you talking about?
@@louispconstant6624 When you're stuck with those life conditions you're not able to really see or feel any of that. Too much vital resources being blocked and it perpetuates itself
@@paulviviani5217 Elliott saw things clearer than most, let me assure you. Listen to the lyrics. He is on another level
when you discover humanity like Kurt and Elliott did, its depressing to find out the reality
@@louispconstant6624 👍
I don’t know how he did this without out losing it. This is like a cable access version of Good Morning America. They treated him well but wow, not really his crowd at all.
he went into villain mode
Thank you so much for all the Elliott content. This video in particular made a really shitty night bearable, thanks again
I hope you’re feeling better
@@mymayapapayaCan I just say, I love this interaction. There is so much generosity from both of you.
It's so lovely to see some rare high quality vids of Elliott. I wish there was more like this. He was unbelievable.
I can't fucking believe Tom Bergeron interviewed Elliott Smith
What a surreal video. So glad it exists. Thanks for posting this
Oh wow! Thanks MayaPapaya! I’m so happy to see something new and what a beautiful performance of Clementine. I feel like the questions asked were really odd the vibe was almost like poking fun. Just sort of strange. I wish this guy could have taken a different line rather than focusing on Elliott being “angry.” Maybe trying to break the nervousness or something but it felt judgey. Hahaha look how angry this guy is. Weird. The whole show seems weird. But I’m grateful for the opportunity to see it. The performance is great!
That's kinda the standard for mainstream Elliott Smith interviews. They always end up intentionally or unintentionally putting him down or belittling him. I'm thinking of Carson Daly's "You feelin' alright?" Like, wtf is that?
Humility is a pure place to be.
its strange how this video starts - everyones in a jokey attitude, then when Elliott is playing, you can tell everyone knows they're listening to something quite special.
Wow.. and I thought I had seen every Tv appearance and Interview of Elliott thats out there already. Thank you so so much for this. 😊🤗
That was incredible. Wow. I can’t imagine how difficult it would’ve been to play in that environment.
What a beautiful man.
This can't be said enough times. Beautiful inside and out!
This world didn't deserve Elliott.
Gee this must be one of the earliest videos we have of Elliott performing solo - two years before 'lucky three' - he's so young!
The 90's were so weird 💚😄
Thank you, Maya... Love this song. Wonder if they knew tthey were in the presence of one of the best songwriters of his generation?
Bet they didn’t
3:51 *she's GETTING IT*
@@rb919 She’s in breaking bad married to a character named elliot 😂
@@adamsteiner7352 holy shit! That is her 😂 this has to be the strangest video I’ve ever found on RUclips. It’s so surreal with Elliott in the middle of all that.
All the reaction shots seemed to it
and at the end he says "That was shaky". It's crazy to me, that for anybody his performance would be soul changing and revelatory and for him, it was lacking. You wree fucking crazy Elliott... many of us would kill to ever have a performance like that. He was fucking crazy y'all
I can't stop thinking this guy was a genius, a true artist
Oh my god that was so awkward haha
I didn't find it terribly awkward, not any more than usual at least haha. He seemed pretty nervous in the talking part... The mood changes so much when he starts to play though hehe
@@JunkBondTrader I definitely got the impression that it was awkward at first, but I appreciate this insight
You must’ve never heard of Elliott smith 🤦♂️
Was a pretty awkward setting for Elliott to be on… how the heck did this even come about?
@@shanec8224 music labels and managers lol
i love your youtube channel, thank you for continuing to make content for so long
so surreal… such a beautiful video 🤍
love the purple hair❤ miss you Elliott
This is a truly beautiful video
Indeed awkward- isn’t that the Schwartz lady from Breaking Bad in black dress? She seemed appreciative of Elliott’s gift
So priceless!! 🥰🥰😍 I didn’t meet him until Feb 1998! 3 years after this! But I’d always ask him to play Clementine!! So beautiful!! Thank you!! I just covered XO, waltz #2 last week!
❤️❤️❤️
That’s so great that you met him! 🌸
@@mymayapapaya yeah! I knew him!! We would hang out at Largo on Fridays for awhile, in LA!! He sang me that harvest moon song you have here!! In Toronto that night!! (I know that’s so strange to say now… but I met up with him in Vermont two nights before that because I was living in Montreal then got to be with him for his show in Montreal (he asked me for a copy of my dissertation -ha!) Then I decided to drive to his Toronto show! 1999 or late 1998… that’s the year i lived there! It was before cell phones so he gave me the fax number! Haha! Anyways… thanks for all you put out here! It’s sweet -sometimes hard to watch, but usually great memories! Thank you!
@@DrCherylMeier incredible memories!!!!
@@SirCommoner ❤️❤️ it’s like time froze every time I saw him… it was so strange! Just a high level of consciousness… anyways…
@@DrCherylMeier oh I love that! If you don't mind I would like to ask you a question about him, like, was he funny?? Because I think that we only get his awkward or sad interviews and I've seen moments of him that are genuinely funny but there's to little of them
I hate saying this in every comment, but Elliott always gives me chills if I haven't listened in a while. Good lord I love this man.
This interview is like a microcosm of his existence.
It seemed like an uncomfortable situation for Elliott. He was obviously shaking and nervous while playing, but despite that played beautifully.
Amazing performance!! Though Elliott seemed (rightfully) a bit ticked off after the sarcastic "a real morning person / its gonna be alright" comment at 0:20 😶
i screamed omg out loud when i saw this upload
thank you
wow this channel continues to blow me away, thank you so much
this is amazing thank you!!
This planet surely miss Elliott
Thank you so much for this !
What in god's fuck was this situation he found himself in
Lol
Thanks for posting the performance twice in the same vid so I don’t have scroll back :)
lol I don’t know how I made that mistake
Thank you @mymayapapaya for all the Elliott content over the years. This is a gem that I had not seen before.
i’m so happy and devastated at the same time …it’s like having your heart break but being in exhaultation over it…
real vs completely fake corporate bs
At least there was some interaction between them. I think things are too compartmentalised now, simpler times then, when not everything was uber curated and marketed, there was more room for randomness. I feel they got something from the song, and at least in that era people knew how to shut up and listen more.
@@CharlieOBrienTF "a circus like environment to drag him into" making fun of the label he was on, joking about physical harm and bashing his cover art. im sure Elliott loved that huh?
@@soundcamper he didn’t seem to give a fuck, sang his song and moved on I’m sure. Don’t get me wrong, the program seems painful, but at least we got to hear that beautiful rendition of clementine all these years later.
@@soundcamper you don’t know what he loved. Get over yourself and stop hating things just because they’re ‘fake’ and ‘corporate’. People who dwell over what’s ‘real’ need to mature a bit. Just get on with life. Does all the ‘corporate bs’ really affect you that much? Who cares. It is what it is.
@@soundcamper "making fun of the label he was on, joking about physical harm and bashing his cover art."
Oh come on.
I feel like when fans become way too attached to an artist they just love to demonize anyone that artist interacts with in the most bad faith way.
Tom Bergeron (the host) is a comedian, these were jokes that I doubt Elliott took any offense to.
Beautiful how eveyone goes quiet
Beautiful.
The girl on the couch looked at him like who the fuck are you till about the time he sang “just didn’t say sooooooo woah o whoah woah” after that wat h her face she had to change her pants dawg
I'm a big fan of Smith's music, but I can't agree with a lot of the comments that the people in the room were "mesmerized". Or the "shallow glaze melted off their faces" in an instant . The host tapped his foot, the puppet bobbed his head. What were you expecting when they are politely listening to any song? The woman had a subtle smile on her face. She knew she was on tv. I didn't see awe. I think even smith would say you are making too much of it. But people like to make their favorite musicians into gods I guess. 😂
He was so unique
“What if you think so” was sung so perfectly here
*she thinks
Good Lord, he was PAINFULLY awkward here and in many other similar situations...and who could blame him? The people interviewing him were like vampires. Completely unaware and soulless. Not exactly good for the sort of soul that Elliott Smith was.
Elliott 🖤
this clip is surreal
I cried
Greatest song writer ever ,... Period. Only love brother,.. See you soon...
The most relatable artist imo
Love the puppet behind Elliott. Surreal stuff!
Thank you ❤
Thank you for this!! Howd you find this!!?? You're the oc of elliott content on yt
Thank you, someone in the Elliott subreddit found it, sent it to me and said I should upload it

song starts at 2:26
hmm... did you post this before? or someone maybe someone has before.. feels very familiar but its been some time since i binge watched Elliott interviews.. he's so on point here.., his voice.. sounds pretty damn close to the album version
Thank you so much for sharing this. Love the interview with the puppet hanging in the background.
Beautiful version of Clementine.
man... the cover art is people jumping off buildings and the guy asks for Elliott what's the simbolism? I mean, he couldn't know that Elliott would kill himself years later but still. Elliott was clearly uncomfortable.
The last show I would expect to see Elliott Smith. Maybe I apply too much the suicide imagery attached to him because I have 25 and ended up listening to his music few years ago but I bet the host remembers this conversation with a bitter taste in his mouth now.
Were all those people in that room on the payroll? Tons of em just sitting around? What kinda show is this?
2:22 "cyberbabe", anyone know what he's talking about?
The lady next to him in the pink dress. No clue who she is though. She looks very familiar.
Precious
Jessica Hecht (of Breaking Bad and Friends fame) and that broad on the couch before he performed - "he's weird and awkward". After he sang the song - "he's deep and mysterious...and hot". 3:37 - "i wonder what he's doing after the show".
It was so good it had to be repeated. Yup, they got it.
awesome performance... also that's the one chick from a few episodes of friends and breaking bad
They’re leaping a building in a single bound
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! THANKS!
Wow perfect performance. As for all the other weirdo shit in the background.. wtf
Never seen this before... Cool
What a treasure
I felt a bit like the man in the blue shirt was ridiculing him slightly.
Honestly I think he's just like that, I mean the guy hosted America's Funniest Videos too.
He's a goofy goober.
Magic
Elliot brought the 20th century to halt
i love this one
7:56 Tom Bergeron saying "shit!"
3:52 my reaction to everything he’s ever written
best reaction, that look of curiousity marvel and discovery is absolute gold, what I and any real artist should aspire for
What a find.
I can just tell he's thinking 'Wtf am I doing here?! '
“It’s not my label.”
Tom Bergeron. An American TV National Treasure
This is the craziest shit I've ever seen! How have we never seen this??
2:15 clementine
They were trying to make a joke of his art in a lot of ways on this show.. then he starts playing and they really understand it isn't so surface level..
Elliot smith gets interviews by the guy who does the ol “pretend make out with yourself” but from the second grade
the best of the homies
streets wet you can tell by the sound of the caaarrrs

Holy cow
extened cut
lol yeah oops
Can't believe this is real @_@ interesting
