Now you gotta do figure 8 I found that the more rock adjacent stuff really grew on me after subsequent listens. I also felt like instead of just past romantic relationships, he was personifying his feelings of depression and suicide along with his substance abuse. One song in particular that I feel can be seen from that lens is tomorrow tomorrow. I would love to see you react to some Adrianne Lenker or maybe My Back Is Killing Me Baby by Car Seat Headrest
I think it says a lot that the only place Elliott says XO on the album is actually to his mom on Waltz #2. Elliott grew up w a lot of abuse in the home, so he moved out of his moms house and from Texas to Oregon when he was like 15, where he lived w his dad. Some of the songs could be about a romantic interest too but I do find a lot of the album really haunting through that lens, and that makes the songs that are about his drug addiction, or his struggle to find people who really care much more impactful; maybe being as a way to cope with the perceived loss of his parent. Not saying anything is forsure, I could be wrong about the different songs and what they're about, but watching this made me wonder just how much of this is a letter to his mom. Either way an absolute monster of an album, some of my favorite songs of all time.
@@Not_Mii_Uus If you are interested, I would recommend reading Torment Saint: The Life of Elliott Smith. There are lots of good details about not only Waltz #2, but his whole life.
Such a great album! Would love to see a reaction to Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning. Kind of similar indie rock/indie folk vibe, but with a hint of country and emo
When I was in London not too long ago I was on a bus that passed through an area called ''White City'' and I remembered that I had heard ''White City'' in Bled White. I didn't think of it much but when I sat in the metro and looked at the tube map I realized White City was on the Yellow (tube) line. When looking into it it totally makes sense because Elliott also worked in London at Abbey Roads Studio. Rose City on the 409 is in Texas (Elliott Smith was born in Texas). By mentioning those locations in the opening of Bled White it conveys how great of a scale it was (in distance and time duration). Hidden in plain sight of saying everywhere and anytime (the city's been bled white). PS Some people mention Portland is the city of roses (it's not on the 409) but this could also could be a reference.
Elliott never missed. While I have my favorites, I LOVE every one of his albums. The posthumous one is a little jarring for some, but it’s excellent. Also, people don’t always know to check out New Moon is. It’s a collection of B-sides, but it feels more like a cohesive album than most collections of that sort.
This subscriber song thing you talked about in the vid is honestly so cool of you to do, I'd love to send in a song, but my music isn't done, my stuff sounds a bit like The Microphones/Mount Eerie stuff, really appreciate you doing that for people.
I've recommended this one a time or two. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs 🔥 I feel like that's a great introduction to an expansive discography by a man who just might expand your understanding and appreciation of music as a whole. You might also tap into a kind of strange fan base that doesn't see a lot of representation in content like this. 🙂
Yooooo let’s goooo more Eliot Sniff 💀 Yo Smags could you please do more Emo like I loved that you done Brand New but they are like more alt you could do some bands like Mineral or sunnyday rel estate
I have been waiting for this RAAAAAAHHHHHHH FIGURE 8 NEXT Edit: I think this album is definitely front loaded, and the sax on question mark just straight up sounds bad lol, but I still really enjoy this album a lot and like u said has some of my favourite highs from Elliott’s career. Glad u checked it out :)
Was just listening to this yesterday and remembered that you still had to finish the second leg of Elliott's discog. Smags is able to communicate telepathically 👁👁👁
Now that you’re an initiated Elliott Smith fan I would recommend watching the documentary about him called “Heaven Adores You”. It’s pretty good and drops some cool lore about him and his songwriting.
Hey, man! Recently came across your channel with some DG & RH Reaction vids!! I’m glad to see you’ve had such a grand consistency in the albums you react to, super happy to have come across it! If you’re interested in somethin’ late nineties and extremely melancholic, I heavily suggest the song “Novacaine for the Soul” by the band eels. You may know them from all the movie songs they did with Shrek and similar! The album Electro-shock Blues has painfully real lyrics on the nose. I have NOT seen any reaction channel when looking up for any full-album reaction by the eels, and feel this song and a lot of the discog of the band is EXTREMELY underrated and deserves some recognition and love. Novacaine for the Soul is from their debut and one of the breakout songs for ‘em!
once you've finished Elliott's solo discography you should go back and listen to his former band Heatmiser. their album Mic City Sons is probably what id start with since it sounds the most like his solo stuff.
Check out The Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse. Its a banger of a indie 90s album about the gentrification and industrialization of where the band grew up as well as the loss of identity of that community as well as living and travel in the western US. As Elliott said. "I'm familiar with Modest Mouse Music. I like em', I think they're good. They're emotional and cool."
Elliott Sniff 👃 Was very happy to see you had posted this one!! 🙂 Big Elliott Smith fan! Either/Or is my favorite of his and a top 10 album for me, but I do love this one a ton also. Especially songs like Tomorrow Tomorrow, Pitseleh, Bled White and Bottle Up and Explode. I agree that the cleaner and more produced aspects of the vocals and instruments was really cool and a nice change up. Incorporating more instruments too in general. If you liked this one the most on first listen I think you’ll really like Figure 8. Though I gotta request again, if you want more indie singer songwriter stuff Ys by Joanna Newsom is great! That or more Fiona Apple! I know you really liked When the Pawn. I really think you should check out her album The Idler Wheel! Thank you David! Keep up the great work dude!
Saw somebody mention Sea Change by Beck. That album hits deep, definitely recommend that. One of Beck's best albums. I'd love to see you delve into the weird world of Beck. Chronologically if I'm being selfish :)
Holy shit i was waiting for you to react to more elliott, there's something about his songs that keeps getting better the more you listen to it, I used to skip baby britain because I thought it was way too upbeat to be an elliott smith song and it just didnt felt right, after like a few months I got in the mood to listen to it, it made perfect sense it and became like top top 5 from him instantly even though it sounds exactly the same (Also please listen to Figure 8)
the director of good will hunting found elliott and pretty much put him on for the rest of the world, also he got nominated for an oscar for miss misery!!! (elliott had mixed feelings abt the whole thing tho)
Love me some Elliott Smith reactions let’s goooooo Suggestions: Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway Third Eye Blind - Self-Titled Parannoul - After the Magic
Hey smags! i was wondering if you would at some point react to Singles (like single track album)? It would be a cool idea to take some and make some sort of compilation up to 15 songs maybe? (my favourite is The Smiles - Bending Hectic) Some recs: Desert Sand Feels Warm At Night - New World Disciples Anyways, keep up the amazing work in your music career and take care! ♥️
Great analysis as usual. Is there a proper way to request album reviews? I'd donate to help you do 3D Country by Geese (unquestionably one of the best albums of 2023).
Haven't watched your reaction yet but wanted to mention some albums that were in your polls but that you haven't reacted to so far (I'm only listing the ones that I would personally like to see, maybe there were more): Bon Iver - S/t Swans - The Seer Joanna Newsom - Ys Portishead - Third (this one's very recent but still)
9:12, the happiest elliot smith song (despite the name) is definitely "suicide machine". its not on any streaming platforms but its definitely a banger and i recommend it to all elliot smith fans! :) ruclips.net/video/3VivPgfY-7Q/видео.htmlsi=GqHJklLTap3pOxYt
Great video! I am a huge fan of Elliot Smith. A couple of recommendations : Lift to experience - Texas Jerusalem crossroads Asobi Seksu - Citrus Silver Jews - natural bridge Shallowater - there is a well
still loving the videos my guy a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
if you like this you'll love figure 8, this album was definitely him trying a lot of new things he hadn't done in the past but on figure 8 he kinda puts it all together like the better production and the guitar solos it sucks elliott died so young he was still getting better and better as an artist on every album (also you should check out the song miss misery its a great song and one of his most popular but its only on the deluxe edition of this album because it was made for the movie good will hunting and it was even nominated for an oscar)
Yo smags, Morgan Freeman came to me in a dream and said the world will end if you don't react to ode!ay by beck. Sounded like some serious stuff, I wouldn't risk it if I were you.
You know I've commented this a lot because I always watch your videos, they make my day 😊 : please react to Jim O'Rourke "Live at Japan 2002.9.16"!! It's one of my favorite live albums!!!
I HAVE BEEN DREAMING OF THIS DAY. NOW I CAN FINALLY REST EASY
Now you gotta do figure 8
I found that the more rock adjacent stuff really grew on me after subsequent listens. congrats on damn near a year of consistent music reactions, your way too underrated
Figure 8 is my favorite ES album. Tons of incredible tracks on there, nice variety.
Absolutely killing it with the reactions lately, thanks Smags!
Such a great album! Would love to see a reaction to Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning. Kind of similar indie rock/indie folk vibe, but with a hint of country and emo
Beck - Sea Change - gives some similar beautiful heartbreaking vibes on an epic level. Produced by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead)

waltz 1 is a masterpiece tbh
unironically the greatest song ive ever heard
my favorite elliott smith song

the first half of the album is so strong
It FEELS like it’s time for another Animal Collective album 🍻
I've heard this album hundreds of times but I've never read the lyrics. I appreciate you putting them up there.
His debut Roman Candle is worth checking out too. Probably my personal favorite
Figure 8 is probably his most upbeat album. Would love to see your reaction on that one
This subscriber song thing you talked about in the vid is honestly so cool of you to do, I'd love to send in a song, but my music isn't done, my stuff sounds a bit like The Microphones/Mount Eerie stuff, really appreciate you doing that for people.

Recommending The Residents - Not Available (1978)
Elliot Smith's music always hits different... just like the album 3D Country by Geese which I beg you again to react to :)

Now that you’re an initiated Elliott Smith fan I would recommend watching the documentary about him called “Heaven Adores You”. It’s pretty good and drops some cool lore about him and his songwriting.

I'm glad that's past you. Is it hard to listen to now as a result or is it more of a "Thank goodness it's not so dark anymore" kind of feeling?
You gotta try out The Chameleons- Script of the bridge. It’s a sizzler
