Some useful context for you: Elliott originally had modest success as part of a band (heatmiser). So even tho a lot of his solo material was very acoustic, he had an affinity for playing in a rock band as well. When he went solo, he would tour both ways. Many shows would be him with little or no accompaniment, but then other shows would a rock band version and he would play more rock versions of the songs. The Figure 8 record was probably the only one to really capture both sides of that coin.
“Had a dream as an army man with an order to march In my place, while a dead enemy screams in my face” is one of the most visceral lyrics I’ve ever heard
You are the best reaction RUclipsr Also, visiting the mural where he took the album cover photo every now and then is the sole reason why I love living in LA
It's crazy to me that people don't understand what he's talking about . Sure, there are a few songs that are more cryptic in a way but most of his songs make me bawl my eyes out. As an awkward guy and recovering addict, it's hard not to resonate so much to his lyrics lmao. Most emotional artist for me tbh.
Elliott defintely had a love for country music, the storytelling, the acoustic guitar dominance in a lot of his work. And yes a big Beatles fan as well.
This album was the first Elliot Smith I had heard, and as a The Beatles kid, I fell for it. At the time, I was in high school and a metal head, so this was one of the few outliers of non-heavy music I was checking out.
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy Massive Attack - Blue Lines J Dilla - Donuts Wire - Pink Flag Depeche Mode - Music For The Masses Mogwai - As The Love Continues The Fall - This Nations Saving Grace
Great reaction! Now you gotta react to From a basement on a hill- although it is unfinished in some aspects and may have been altered after Elliotts death slightly, I see it as a kind of suicide note from Elliott smith and is a very interesting album.
for some reason it took me so long to get to this album after listening to his earlier ones, but once i did it immediately became my favourite of his ❤
@@HenryAvery-qg1hdRoman Candle WAS released he just didn’t plan on releasing it, it’s actually his debut album. I think you’re confusing it with New Moon which is filled with songs he never released while alive.
I'm late so you'll probably not see it, Smags, but still gonna plug some recommendations: Nirvana - Nevermind (come on, even if you know some songs, the full experience will hit different) Portishead - Third Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica Also love Elliott a lot. Imo, one of the best songwriters of all time. Please, listen to From a Basement on the Hill and Roman Candle as well. The former is his posthumous album and is even more rock-oriented than this one and the latter is his debut which was originally intended to serve as a demo album but the label loved it so much that they released it as it was. It's his tamest record but still solid
Please listen to Elliott’s posthumous album From A Basement On The Hill. It’s pretty experimental compared to his others but it’s so devastatingly beautiful. And has some of his greatest songs ever.
I think what sets this channel apart for me is that I finally found a person who really tries to listen to every aspect of a song and figure out the meaning to the lyrics.
Only the beginning and the end left now, Roman Candle and From A Basement On The Hill. Theres also New Moon but its a compilation with some outtakes, alternate/early versions and also Heatmiser songs. Honestly going either way and then listening to the other will work all the same, but personally FABOTH should be left until last its a great closing to his legacy, almost like the ending of a movie.
I loved your Modest Mouse LCW vid. If you ever do modest mouse again the "Long Drive" or "The Moon & Antarctica" are dope, or to fit in with this vids title you could do "Interstate 8."
This was Elliot’s last album before he took his own life after getting in an argument with his girlfriend there was a posthumous release called from a basement on a hill but it pretty clearly wasn’t finished yet when it came out and then a few years later there was an album called new moon with some unreleased and alternate versions of songs new moons definitely worth a listen if you’re an Elliot smith fan the early version of miss misery is heartbreaking and amazing RIP one of the best songwriters of all time
It's not really clear if Elliott took his own life or if his girlfriend killed him. I mean, technically, it's more fair to say that she did kill him or at least made the situation much worse for him because she pulled out the knife from his chest. If she didn't, Elliott might have survived. Other than that, absolutely agree with your From a Basement on the Hill recommendation. New Moon is wonderful too but not sure if Smags' reaction to it is warranted
@@friendlystranger9662 yeah I had always heard the autopsy wasn’t able to conclude wether it was suicide or not, either way so unfortunate that someone so talented died so young I think he still had so much more music to make figure 8 and basement on a hill always make me wonder what he would of done next because his records only get more and more bold and experimental
For the guitar part you were confused about at the end of the lost in found, there’s a unreleased song called dancing in the highway that was meant to fade into tgat
loved the reaction!! on a unrelated note you should react to some Of montreal! either "hissing fauna, are you the destroyer" or "satanic panic in the attic"
baby boy, you've gotta listen to abbey road by the beatles!! side B is an entire medley from 'you never give me your money' to 'the end' and it's AMAZING!! (also listen to the 2019 mix)

FINALLLYYYY The best Elliott album in my opinion. Would love if you were to listen to Today I Laid Down by Bl4ck M4rket C4rt. It was a slowcore/shoegaze project released last year from a 17 y/o teen from the Bay Area. Unfortunately, he’s passed away due to suicide making this project something of a swan song. It’s a near perfect yet short album that you’ll love.

the fact that "Bye" is the last song on his last album released while alive is so sad and kinda unsettling
The last Beatles song that was recorded for an album is ‘The End’ too :/
