    My favorite quotes from Mat
''I just put my mindset in the frame of being a student''
''The time to exhaustion and the time to pain is drastically increased because you are comfortable on the bike''
''it's a challenge, how fun would cycling be if it was easy? You want it to be hard, you want to have adversity because that's how you get stronger
''This wind hurts, but I'm smiling on the inside''
''You are battling against that ever-mounting desire to stop''
''You always have this reserve, and you want to hack that.
''In order to get stronger, you have to endure, in order to get faster, you have to hurt''
'' I don't ride to get the local legend, but it's basically an estimate of your commitment to something, also your obsession made public''
''You really can just get into the zone, get into the rhythm, and you are really dancing onto your bike''
''at the end of the day, this is fun. Does it hurt? Yes. But it's fun to get to that point and we can lose sight of that''
''In her last moment, her greatest fear was not being able to move''
''Don't fear the what if, fear the what if I don't''

Wow, such a great video Charles!! I thought it was only gonna be a video about a beast of a cyclist, but what stroke me the most were his anecdotes, philosophy and pieces of advice towards the end. My uncle went through some tough times due to lung cancer too, so I can relate to seeing someone you care for go through immense effort just to do things we wouldn't think twice about. Sadly I'm not half the cyclist Mat is, even though I don't have kids. Maybe doing other sports hinders my concentration, I think I often fall for trends. That is why some weeks I only play tennis, whereas other times I only want to ride my bike or go sailing. But I'm sure I'll keep getting stronger, at least now that I've finished university I find myself riding more frequently.
Please keep the videos coming, we'll be here for them!

@@CharlesOuimet First I've seen of your channel so I'm not sure where you are coming from. Unless the camera angle is deceiving, you appear significantly shorter/smaller than Mat. If that's true, then surely you know how sensitive TT bike fitting is and that your new TT bike would not come close to fitting him, right? As for "WORLD TOUR POWER", I don't know if that's supposed to be click bait or a joke? I'm 55 years old and recently did 24 mph avg for 50 mi on the Polo Field track in SF on a regular road bike with clip on aero bars and 35/50 wheelset. There are dozens of guys 50+ stronger than I am in the SF Bay Area, let alone all of the younger stronger P1/2s locally. Any of them could avg 40kph on a flat track for one hour easily (unless there were horrendous crosswinds). "World Tour power" on a road bike solo on a flat track for an hour outdoors would start at least 45kph, if not faster.

I learned about that reserve when I was around 30: being a mountaineer I suddenly started feeling every meter of altitude. I was known to keep going with crazy heavy loads as a woman for my bodyweight.. It got tough and hard and i fought from the first meter. I suffered. Turned out i was anaemic with only 35% of red blood cell volume left... Still made every climb as fast as every one else, just with more suffering. But body was doing it well. It was then I understood my body talks about preservation, not exhaustion. Realizing that gave me soooo much more options later on in planning crazy tours etc.

with 5.8 to 6 W/kg FTP you win a GF in Italy, 7 W/kg would be more than Bradley Wiggins hour record output.

His advice was excellent (tyres, bike fit, mentality) and this video was entertaining.
What would be far, FAR more insightful and useful would be to have a discussion of what it **REALLY** takes to attain this astoundingly high level of fitness. For example:
Can we see see a 2 week training plan?
How long he has been training at this level and when he start training seriously?
What does his support team looks like-
Does he work with a nutritionist, physio, coach or bike technician?
If he uses them, what are their professional rates, or do they volunteer their services?
What impact does this have on his family and work life? What sacrifices does he make for STRAVA immortality?
Is he sponsored by any cycling companies?
    If so which ones?
What supplements, or specialised on-or- off bike nutrition does he use?
How many hours a week does he spend on Zwift? In the gym? Stretching? Doing core strength work?
My point is that this gentleman has worked at a professional level for YEARS to attain this exceptional level of fitness-
I think that his PREPARATION should be recognised as much as his PERFORMANCE
This would also give needed PERSPECTIVE as to the life choices he has made and what it takes to achieve Strava God status....
This would be a refreshingly honest, transparent and realistic take on the choices that would result in high level cycling-
    But its just a suggestion...
on YT, no-one wants to know about the labour pains, they just want the baby :-)
    Cheers!

Damn, the engine on that guy is huge, easy 350W threshold+++ That ride does look awfully uninspiring though, riding around on a race track:p
