I'm blown away. You did awesome for winging it unrehearsed and all in a 39 min video without a lot of cut scenes and editing. Your experience, voice, analysis, and the way you explain everything is awesome.
The thing I appreciate the most is that you actually do these things, even if sometimes it comes out a bit pitchy on same notes or a bit off on the melody, you just go with it, because it's a normal thing especially when you're doing it right then and there. It helps us, or at least me, understand that even singers don't always get it perfect every time.
I'm glad you like the videos, Mario. I'm analyzing and reacting live in the moment, so I'll go from low notes to high notes right there on the spot... so the carbunckles just make it that much more honest and real. No punching-in the vocals or autotune here. Just trying to show you how you can get there, too.
I love your isolated vocals videos, no one breaks down vocal and demonstrates techniques used like you do. Thank you for these, and everything else you do. You’re the best!
One of my favorite covers of all time. I love David 's voice and always thought how he added in the intensity was absolutely perfect. I just started watching this KTVA video on it and I can't wait to hear Ken's breakdown! As a soprano female singer I want to be able to do this cover in my range! Thank you Ken for always delivering amazing content. You are a gift to vocalists everywhere!!!
One of my favorite things about you and your videos Ken, other than your kick-ass voice and your friendly personality(from what I can tell, granted I've never met you) I just love how you leave your imperfections in these videos. It really shows that your doing this on the spot, more or less. And when you mess up a note, melody, etc... or whatever, you basically just say oops & correct yourself while teaching us how to do the same. It also shows us that no one can just sing every song for the first time perfectly and sound exactly like the artist we're covering. You're awesome, brother!
This is someone that loves what they do, are great at what they do.. and it all shines through. And this is important too.. teaching others how to sing and helping them express themselves in a time.. where frankly.. we need more voices, not less. Thanks Ken.
Thank you Ken for this. An amazing song covered by a guy that that understands that this message is still relevant 50 plus years later, Your breakdown made this version of Daivid’s vocal all the more astounding.
Òne of the few songs I have ever heard that actually improves the original version. The mood and build up that David does in this gives such emotion and chills when listening. One of those tunes I just love to close my eyes and listen.
Ken, You are so amazing for demystifying these "hero" tracks, this one in particular but so many of these Isolated Tracks videos have given me a renewed sense of confidence and inspiration! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
This cover version by Draiman is one of the few covers I've heard that is better than the original. Disturbed's interpretation of this song is always how I heard this song. I always thought the original version by Simon and Garfunkel was way too upbeat on the chorus. Given the lyrics of the song, that upbeat tempo that Simon and Garfunkel put on the original chorus always felt out of place to my ears. Draiman performs this song exactly how I always thought it should have sounded. It's a brilliant cover. Disturbed isn't really my genre of music, but I've always found their version of this song to be brilliantly done!
He definitely gets his message across. Even this isolated track with out any instruments just really does something to me emotionally. Thanks for the great video and tutelage Ken: you are awesome!
Aloha Ken, I've been away a few years but I came back to hear comments on singing Bruno Mars. I love how you take this song step by step and make an analogy and it seems to help me the best to sing like a serious amateur for other songs and artists as well. When you make comments on how it's not exactly the same I understand everything about that(it's not that you can't). It's just bits and pieces for understanding how to understand the emphasis of the singing technique that we might have missed.. Absolutely no need to apologize we can see the great talent so so great!! Your "critical eye" backed up with your talent is always appreciated! You are definitely so so awesome! Thanks and Aloha, -Craig
Really love your videos, especially this one when you break it down and explain how the artist sings a song. Sound of silence is one of my all time favourite songs, and as much I love the original the most, the Disturbed version is a very unique take on the song. Thank you so much for your insights and clear demonstration on how to approach the song. Sending lots of love from Malaysia! Keep up the good work, Ken and thank you once again.
Holy cow! Totally sounded like a Weird Al vocal sound at 23:59. Thank you for putting so much effort into these, Ken, to show the distinctions in the sound. A true service to anyone wanting to learn more about singing.
Thank you for this review Mr. Ken Tamplin. It is a very special song which i loved since always. I love how he is beginning, very sensitive soft breathy, just that he can sing it continuously and then, he add always more dynamic to vocal and he comes always in higher notes and with more air in lungs and then this is the power in his voice, which hypnotize everyone who listen. How beautiful job he done!!! He has great control over his voice so that he sings a pure feelings!
I really, really enjoyed this Ken Tamplin Vocal Lesson! Now my belly hurts. I forgot that I'm not a singer. This stuff is hard! Kudos to all you who make this look effortless.
5:15 I had no idea you could go that low, Ken. Mind blowing, the clarity of the tone, the strength and power. How is it possible to sing that low and on the other hand - so high, like you? I know it takes a lot of work to get there, but man, I just don't believe anyone can do this. It takes something more - the talent.
One of my favorite segment from KTVA. A vocal study of great singers from a great singer is absolutely GOLD! I'm also a fan of the vocalist from disturb. He also have a great distortion tone. Thanks a lot sir Ken!
I have loved Disturb's version since the first time I heard it. Then it came on the music channel my husband was streaming in the car and he loved it too so we started listening to it at least once a week for a while. Thanks for breaking it down!
Best in depth analysis I have seen, interesting look into “how the sausage is made”, only thing you haven’t touched in depth is mouth opening and how different genres sing vowels letters differently, but something needs to be saved for the class,
"I turned my collar to the" is easily my favorite phrase in this version - Those notes just always jump out at me and "the" answers the question if he can hit the low notes. Wow.
@Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy...No doubt about it...David Draiman is a Master of his instrument...!!! Four distinct places in this piece always sends chills and goose bumps to me... Your breakdown is the best I've seen and is spot on...!!!
What a joy to enjoy this professional man! Finally a TRUE reaction & analys video! Really in-depth and the fact that we get a demonstration from Ken is amazing. Thank you!
Spot on Ken. As a pro engineer I can tell you he's using some sort of tuning. But not because he can't sing it. There is a difference in a widely manipulated vocal and one that's had a 'nudge'. Two reasons, one it may have been in his contract. Certain labels won't release major singles unless they've been tuned. It's kind of an insurance policy. As another pro engineer friend of mine says, 'everyone gets tuned when they come to me.' Second is that if they're using a lot of pitch perfect electronic instruments, well even Pavarotti would sound out of tune next to that as theres no variance and ossolation to play in. So you have to tune the centre of the note on the money or it sounds out. One of the downfalls of the democratization of music. Some of the effects sounds like an Eventide pitch delay and harmonizer width trick. Great vid again.
I’m no engineer but I recorded my vocals not long ago, added some compression, eq, a little reverb, slight delay, and in one part my vibrato, and in some pitch changes, it sounded auto tuned. I figured it was an artifact of digital recording or something else maybe. I’m still learning. I would like to know why it’s doing that
I really enjoyed your analysis and explanation on the many nuanced effects and techniques for this rendition of The Sound of Silence!! I absolutely love this version of the song and I do prefer it to the original because of the emotion this version evokes. I think the original is nice but they remind me of the bard on the animated Hobbit and Return of the King films. I literally get chills every time I hear Disturbe’s version!!
Kem, Thank you for the videos. It has been 16 years since I have had a vocal lesson or did any serious singing. I have been working with a guitar player friend, and he told me about this video. I have watched a few and you have reminded me about techniques that I had forgotten about. For example, breathing from the dia[hram. I am 51 years old and I thought I was losing range because of age. I am finding that's not true. I have been working through this video with you. I am not saying I am on par, but I am definitely feeling better about my abilities. Thanks again this means a lot.
Wow! Wish I had Draiman's acapella version in its entirety. It's even more powerul than the one with music - which I loved too. KT rocks it once again on tutorial!
This song to me starts like the calm before the storm.. then it’s like a hurricane ,, full of thunders and back to calmness ending with a beautiful rainbow. Love his voice! ✌️
So just a note on the use of autotune: This could just be rumor / speculation, but I've read a number of accounts that David was suffering a pretty nasty bout of the flu during this performance and autotune was used to help even out notes that normally wouldn't give him trouble. To me, this is a perfect use of the technology -- helping to create a consistent performance, without being in-your-face obvious.
It's so obvious there's autotune when you hear the "restless dreams I walked alone" line. I really wish this cover was more pure, his voice sounds extremely processed.
I'm shocked by the fact that noone came up with this already. He was really sick that real day... He had a flu and he was terrified thinking about singing this song in those conditions. He's still amazed by his performance even though he was sick. They put autotune in one verse against his will, and he complained about that later. I'm not their biggest fan, but that's just amazing.
“That voices never share!!”. Wow! Your ability to manipulate your own sound is incredible. I loved the deep analysis. It was VERY informative. Also, you touch on something I’ve noticed in modern pop singers, but know one talks about. Too me it is the elephant in the room - Many modern pop artists swallow the sound - manipulating their voices to sound richer, and make up for tone that they do not naturally possess. The result it bad diction and someone sounding like they swallowed their own tongue. However, it’s an interesting approach to singing.. a creative aspect, that I can appreciate...
What an awesome teacher you are! You've got some serious talent for visualizing and explaining the most miniscule details in an understandable way. Impressive!
Wow! Awesome video!!! I'm learning so much from you, Ken, you really know your art, you go in depth, and you explain it so well to us you make it sound simpler than it is! Amazing video, you're very very talented!
I have just searched for a live version, just to see and hear this song and how he deals with the incredible variety in vocals. Found one from 28/03/2016 on some Americal show. My god!!! What a performance. If I may say, he never seems to move his mouth any more than 2inches from the microphone!! How on earth is that regulated, especially when he goes hell for leather in the last part!? Is that him, or the tech guys behind the scenes dealing with what must be a huge change in the power coming from him!??
I absolutely love this cover. People that are like, "I only like the original, this is awful" are absolutely missing the point of why artists do a cover. On the discussion of the "autotune" issue, I've never read anything like you mention, but I suggest you check out the acapella version he did outdoors (maybe it was a funeral? not sure. I don't recall exactly) definitely no autotune there. It would be neat to see you compare and contrast the two. Good breakdown.
God: So Mr.Draiman. Would like to sing like an angel or demon? Draiman. Yes. Its amazing to complete different versions of the song. Yet the end result is magic. A song that spans multi generations
I love the song and I also love David's unbelievable version. I love the way he's telling the story in the song and how incredibly he can build the mood of the song :O I tried that version on my own. It seems to be about the middle of difficulty but to be honest - it is very challenging and will make vocal cords burning :) Thank you for this video
I was just listening to this last night since watching you analize the performance! I thought id heard some autotune but it was so subtle, it was hard to tell for sure. I also don't think he needed it, but it worked out just fine. I really loved the emotion on this version and those phrases with the militant feel, so thanks a lot for breaking this down! It was very insteresting watching you play with the effects too and see how much the voice can change. I feel like what i almost always get from watching your videos is the way one can influence others by doing what one loves and it's very inspiring! Thank you for sharing some joy in the world, Ken, i appreciate it. Peace
What???? Ken, its taking me an effort to figure out what to say. You just changed your voice and belted. Youre just the coolest ever dude. Be my neighbor
I was really happy when you pointed out the autotune. I was sure I could hear it. Why oh why must people use that? And thank you for the wonderful tutorial! I'm NOT an experienced singer - just sing in the shower and at karaoke sometimes. But I really wanted to learn this song a bit more than just singing along with Spotify. This helped a lot!
True. The sound techs from the show made the choice to use auto tune. David commented that he was very unhappy with this choice. You can also hear very clearly that he was ill. Still amazing beyond words.
It’s a shame it’s not a dry track. So many people don’t rate their voice because they don’t realise characteristics they want but don’t have are post production. This at the very least has eq and at least one reverb but chances are there are 5 or 6 post production techniques to enhance this vocal. It would be nice to have a video with Ken and a tech on this subject.
Wow, that was really in-depth, really appreciate the effort. I wish you would do more like this, where you go into all the details, but I guess it takes a lot of time to make this kind of video. Anyway, thank you very much and keep doing what you're doing. You're great. ;)
Ken another great analaysis on a great singer and how you demonstrated the heavier tone was spot on you not only teach it you show us you can do it too and as a singer myself I use that heavier tone in my heavy songs in my band.
I think the producers use a lot of compression on the vocals especially for intimate moments. Edit: I see you mentioned that at the very end of your discussion. Love your analysis of the songs that you review!!
This was a great analysis. Who would have thought Draiman and Disturbed could take a tune like this and make it into something all generations can appreciate. Was never a big fan of the original, but I want to take a crack at this version. With your higher root tone, I was hearing Bruce Dickinson in some of this. Perhaps Maiden will do a cover of a cover. Great job as always Ken!
Ken; your tonality, cadence, vibrato and rasp when you are "just" showing us how it's done... WOW!!! just beautiful brother!
Thank you, Virtual Human Experiment!

@@kentamplin exactly. I really respect that and it honestly makes it a far better experience as a student!
Also, the Disturbed studio is pitch corrected. Listen to how perfect it is. Too perfect.

This is a great conversation for the forum, please consider posting there, you'll get great feedback! forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
Another super tone singer both in low and distorted - unreal story teller 👊❤️
Indeed!
Thanks for listening!
You absolutely nailed that distortion. Great job and great explanation. I learned a lot.
Glad it was helpful!
I love Disturbed I've been to one of their concerts and it was very emotional powerful and uplifting
Awesome, Glenn!
God: So Mr.Draiman. Would like to sing like an angel or demon?
Draiman. Yes.
Its amazing to complete different versions of the song. Yet the end result is magic. A song that spans multi generations
Haha! Right?!
It's better than the original!
IVE BEEN WAITING ON SOMEONE TO DO A VID ABT DAVID I LOVE U DUDE
He's great!
wow the breackdown's wher amazing ! amazing analyzing skills there, codnt understand without u thank u so much for the amazing efford !!
Glad you liked it!
Awesome. Thank you for sharing this valuable info. !!!
Glad it was helpful!
Im 50 and want to be like you when i grow up. Good show, like always
Haha thanks, Videomedia Television!
I love the song and I also love David's unbelievable version. I love the way he's telling the story in the song and how incredibly he can build the mood of the song :O
I tried that version on my own. It seems to be about the middle of difficulty but to be honest - it is very challenging and will make vocal cords burning :)
Thank you for this video
Absolutely, smoothstar110!
Peace
Glad you enjoyed it, Maggie! Thanks for listening!
What???? Ken, its taking me an effort to figure out what to say. You just changed your voice and belted. Youre just the coolest ever dude. Be my neighbor
Haha!! Okay! 😊
Love the FX breakdown.
The T.V. people did it David I guess was not happy about it either.
True. The sound techs from the show made the choice to use auto tune. David commented that he was very unhappy with this choice. You can also hear very clearly that he was ill. Still amazing beyond words.
No matter what the version performed by Disturbed is the best performance of Sound of Silence in the history of this track!
Rock on! 😊
Thanks for weighing in, Alex!
David Draiman can whisper in my ear anytime!! :) Great analysis, as usual Ken.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved the Vogue-ing to "The words of the prophets!"
Wow, that was really in-depth, really appreciate the effort. I wish you would do more like this, where you go into all the details, but I guess it takes a lot of time to make this kind of video. Anyway, thank you very much and keep doing what you're doing. You're great. ;)
It does, but hopefully I will be able to do more like this.
That was a brilliant video, I think you over egged the effects like I'm guilty of doing when I play guitar. Don't stop, love your content.
Great video and explanation as always! Also, I just started your course this week and the information and exercises so far are awesome!
Welcome aboard! Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🥧
Ken another great analaysis on a great singer and how you demonstrated the heavier tone was spot on you not only teach it you show us you can do it too and as a singer myself I use that heavier tone in my heavy songs in my band.
Excellent, excellent breakdown Ken!! This provided some great information. Without a doubt you know your stuff! Thanks I really enjoyed it!
Glad it was helpful, mecarshows!
I think the producers use a lot of compression on the vocals especially for intimate moments.
Edit: I see you mentioned that at the very end of your discussion.
Love your analysis of the songs that you review!!
😀👍
Love the break down Ken
waow such a ggreat tutorial video, thanks for all the time you took really grateful for your time
This was a great analysis.
Thanks, Roy of Cranberry!
David is amazing what a beautiful voice
He certainly is.
Great video, Ken. I learn something new every time I watch your videos. You also have an impressive vocal range. Keep up the great work!
I appreciate that!
