David and the rest of the band just sound like one single Inseparable unit, very few bands can achieve that, and his command of his voice is unbelievable

I thought david's vocals were caused by genetics, but now I see he is incredibly talented.

I gotta be honest, I was getting a little tired of this song, but your analysis breathed a fresh new perspective into this song for me, particularly that "oh wa-a-a-a-ah" part at the start.

This is an incredible analysis of David. It’s unreal how complex his voice is. David, Ben Burnley, Sully Erna, Adam Gontier, Pete Loeffler, Ivan Moody, all voices on a whole other level.

I've read somewhere that the "mom abusing the child" part is a metaphor and the "mom" is our society which is like a mother who's abusing her kids (us). Could be wrong but I wanted to point that out for you, still makes me sad everytime I hear this part, sounds so real.

    • @jonnyink762

You are correct. David Draiman stated in an interview YEARS ago that it wasn't about child abuse. It's an resplendent depiction of culture in general. The mother referenced is "mother culture", and this song is meant to empower those who are "oppressed" and "awaken the demon" inside.

I remember listening to Disturbed as a teenager and pulling the headphones out of the CD player just enough to split the stereo track on the song "prayer" and found out there was a whole clean singing track playing along with the "grit" track that you could hear the most.
It worked out for better and worse for David because the album was amazing, but he was never going to be able to replicate it live, however he does a pretty good job of switching between the 2. I will say if you watch live versions now of the harder stuff it feels like he struggles with it at times and "slurs" quite a bit to mask it

Dear Chris, thanks for sending me here after my question on Till Lindemann! Listening to the bridge without the instrumental was rough to the point where it completely took me out of my day and left me emotionally drained. Lindemann does this too for me in Songs like "Puppe". I have to skip that song unless i'm prepared to spend a couple of minutes recovering. The idea of sharing my feelings on a recording for theoretically anyone to hear is immensely scary. How do I go about ilearning how to emote more? Again, thank you for this experience.

Great video. I love this song! David has a very unique dynamic approach with his vocals.
Of course, while his vocal in this track is absolutely stunning - the range of tone, grit, feel, there is that always-present elephant in this room, and that's the level of post processing/engineering that's been applied to this track. What's obvious is that Melodyne has been used extensively, for both it's pitch and phrasing manipulation abilities. Of course, standard approaches would also have been applied - the track wasn't completed in one take - there is the usual comping here, and layering of two vocals i.e. the end of the original vocal where "will you give in to me" starts (particularly the hi take). It would be VERY interesting look at the pitching of this track to see just by how much it has been 'snapped to the line' (a Melodyne analysis, or Autotune's pitch analysis would show that).
The 'rapid' section after 13:03 is a result of Melodyne's powerful phrasing editing ability - each word has been' literally' shortened, and time-snapped, so that the vocal rhythm is exaggerated to the benefit of the music - and it's very easy to do that in this software. I've been using it professionally for some years.
I'd always be very careful with using anything other than a 'true' live vocal performance to demonstrate to folks interested in singing - almost anything in the last 20 years (particularly nowadays, almost without exception) will have been very heavily processed - excessive pitch and phrasing correction, etc will all lead to a 'sound' literally unobtainable by any human. The problem is, is that finding a 'truly' live take is almost impossible with todays so-called live recordings. Antares Autotune, when used live, is extremely easy to spot, and of course, we're always back to square #1 with the almost certainty of 'post processing'.
Today's technology is fantastic but its rapidly increasing abuse is utterly astonishing. The real crime is that young folks have been, and are being, indoctrinated to accept this lie as the default truth.

I’ve heard David sing live at many points during his career and in 3 completely different arenas. He always sang live and it was obvious. He is a classically trained vocalist, which people don’t realize. His performance always is top notch Of course it wasn’t perfect, nobody’s perfect but if you see Disturbed, you’ve seen that performance was perfect in its own way. But voice quality, never a question.
