  • We keep the ball rolling this week with a critical look at Slayer's Diabolus in Musica.
The Contrarians is a show where one of us picks a dark horse album from a band as their best. In this series we tend to lean the other way and look at a band's worst album.

Did Nic and Graham hit or miss the mark on Slayer? Also let us know what you think about the new style of the show.

I really like Diabolus in Musica a lot. In fact, I like it better than everything that came after it (I do like a few songs on God Hates Us All). It grooved and had a lot of low end to it, as well as the sickest breakdowns of any of their albums. Paul Bostaph's drumming is EXCELLENT (even though it was even better on Divine Intervention). Highlight songs for me are: Bitter Peace, Stain of Mind, Overt Enemy, Perversions of Pain, and Desire.

I think you folks nailed it, especially about the style of the music and the member changes... good job, slayer experts!

I agree it's their worst and it's not even really that bad, I'd give it a 6/10 where as the worst Metallica and Megadeth albums are like 3/10.

I like Diabolus. Paul Bostaph has great drums on that album. Scrum, In the Name of God, Perversions of Pain are good jamming tracks. I think from God Hates Us All onwards is where they started sounding a little sloppy.

The 90s was a bit challenging for the 80’s heavy metal thrash bands they needed to try and stay relative in changing musical times

What Slayer tried to do on "Diabolus In Musica" they did so much better on "God Hates Us All." On "GHUA," Slayer more successfully blended that sludgy de-tuned groove metal style with their traditional thrash style and wrote much better songs on top of that.

Slayer toured with Slipknot before recording this album. The Slipknot influence can easily be heard. I don't think it works.

I've always like D.I.M. and still like D.I.M. it lags in the middle but it is far from being their worst. If I had to name their worst album it is easily Repentless, which has 2-3 good songs. It's the only Slayer album I ever sold, and I wrestled with myself to do it. It's just really bad. After that Christ Illusion isn't that good. I had to listen to Christ Illusion repeatedly and I couldn't understand why I didn't like it....It's Slayer. It was the first Slayer album that right out of the gate I didn't like, and still don't like. Christ Illusion has all the right ingredients to be a good Slayer album but the songs aren't that memorable, or even catchy. Cult is probably the best song on the album. I loved God Hates Us All at the time, but it hasn't aged well and I really don't enjoy it anymore. D.I.M. is really the last Slayer album I can still enjoy outside of their classic era stuff.

I actually like diabolus - its a bit one paced and one dimensional - it lacks a dittohead or raining blood to wake it up - a little more light n shade wouldve made it so much cooler - bitter peace was gr8 live - the album sounds gr8 tho - the ominous growl of the guitars is genuinely scary

I've only listened to a bit of Diabolus in Music, sitting through the whole thing just is not appealing to me. I'd be curious to see if anyone has a contrarian choice for favorite Slayer album. I love Hell Awaits, it's got some of their more daring songs, and Praise of Death is my favorite of all Slayer songs. But it is generally near the top of best Slayer albums lists

I’m going to echo some of the comments here, mainly being the album is wrongly maligned. A good chunk of these songs are fantastic, Bitter Peace, Point, In the Name of God, Unguarded Instinct, Scrum are fantastic songs with a real heaviness to them.

The secret to Pantera: when Dime solos, listen to the be-bop in the background.

Yep - Diabolus is definitely the worst in their repertoire, but God Hates Us All ain't that far behind! That said, the rest of the discography is some of the best thrash ever put out (especially the first three).

@@Gregbaltzer Christ Illusion is great! I wouldn't say I love all the songs on there but Flesh Storm, Supremist, Black Serenade, Skeleton Christ and Catalyst are all awesome

@@Drforrester31 Disagree. It has all the proper Slayer ingredients but memorable song writing. Every time I try to give that album another chance I find it boring and uninteresting.

I actually like this one. The only Slayer albums I really don't like are World Painted Blood because it sounds like crap and the songs suck, and Undisputed Attitude, because they are sloppily covering punk songs and I don't think they improve a single one, it was all trash.

  • @gamleskalle1

Not a strange choice, this is the most common answer to Slayer's albums. It ism't as o bad. Heard worse. 6/10.

  • @agentstanley29

This album did NOT age well. Somehow I liked it a lot in the 90s but once I heard GHUA this album went away from my listening habits a lot. A lot!

I will never understand why this album gets Crapped on. I loved this from Album from the first Listen.
One of their most consistent sounding efforts.
Love the doomier groovy grinding sound.
    Its completely ominous sounding.
Its my third favorite Slayer Record.
And I Hate New Metal... this is not that.
Diabolis is a Crusher of an Album.
Later Slayers albums are all half great records, that often sound like Slayer trying to sound like Slayer.
Diabolis and God Hates us All were their last Full album Masterpieces.
    Cheers.

I think this is less "Contrarian " and more of a general consensus and I disagree. Stain of mind in itself is insane. There are def a couple albums that I dislike more.

    • @thecontrarians2438
      @thecontrarians2438  3 года назад +1

ya... the worst album ones are different because we try to agree with general consensus... which should probably be made clearer... but sometimes we pick a contrarian choice like in our Presence episode, and really that one was more process of elimination (we eliminated coda for being more a compilation, and martin liked ITTOD a bit more and i liked houses a bit more)

    @jensbaumann6945 3 года назад +1

First, i hate it when ppl come up with this nu metal nonsense... wtf is nu metal anyway? More of a (useless) movement as a musicaly defined Genre... so
Slayer always ha groove in their Songs, because thrre was more as only RIB its a normal slayer album. A bit slower as some others, thsts it, I quite like it as most of their later output. But sure there was a step down after divine Intervention
Their worst? REPENTLESS... Not bad but i dont come back to that one suits the disapointing live Album that was to follow

Like all of Slayer’s output Seasons in the Abyss is extremely overrated. It’s not even good. It’s a reheated garbage plate of South of Heaven and Reign in Blood.
