    I have a degree in Meteorology and have installed Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus Weather Stations with my students from CUNY in Mallorca, Spain and Townsville, Australia last year. I had wished I had seen this video before because it would have made the installs and the students understanding much easier. They were Chemistry and Biology majors and had never seen a weather station before in their lives. This is an AWESOME video. Great job. I am heading to Mumbai, India next Tuesday with 15 students from CUNY and we are again going to install a Davis Vantage Pro2 PLus among other activities. I shared this video as required watching for my students before we leave. Thank you for making this video and sharing it for others on RUclips!!!

    Hi, Nice review. My wife and I are both new hams (foundation license) based in Australia. We are in our 60's. We have a Davis Vantage pro2 with an Envoy connected to a computer and a console in another room. We run a wholesale plant propagation nursery, our Davis unit is over ten years old, great system. We are looking into purchasing a "Meteobridge PRO Red" router to transmit data direct from our ISS to the internet and many weather groups & organisations, without the need for a computer running 24/7 plus it can send email alerts based on our own criteria settings. There's so much technology out there now, it's an incredible world for people these day, no need to get bored hey. Thanks again - Terrific job.

    I have two of these stations, both are about 15 miles apart. But they are the Plus models with the 24 hour fan. One I’ve had for 10 years, the other for 7. Best two purchases I’ve ever made!

    Excellent video! I have a fascination with weather and I've had my eye on Davis weather stations for quite some time. The reason for Davis is the accuracy and, I want the wind speed updates every 2.5 seconds versus others which are every 15 seconds. Look forward to more videos man!

    Great review. I am getting ready to install my unit again & jave been watching several reviews. I installed Solar at my house & am planning to add the UV & Radiation modules to my Davis Weather Station as well as upgrading to the new Rain rain cone. Will be fun to share the solar radiation data & energy received from my solar panels.
    Again great job & I am glad to hear your involved with sky warn.
    Take Care.

    I read that the Barometric pressure was adversely affected by moisture; humidity from outside sensors. That's why most makers have started putting the Barometric pressure sensor in the console.

  • @Myodots
    @Myodots 4 года назад +2

    The pressure sensor can be in the display vs outside on the sensor module because buildings are not air tight. A building is typically not at pressure or vacuum vs the surrounding air the building is in. Therefore, the sensor can be inside or outside, and it's more reliable and cheaper to put it inside.

  • @WX4GPS
    @WX4GPS 4 года назад +1

    The reason the barometer is inside, you develop increased accuracy if you operate a pressure transducer at its highest accuracy which is usually room temperature, also wind can induce fluctuations in pressure if the sensor was exposed to brief kicks of wind.

    Excellent video. Called Weathershack and acually spoke to Wes. You tell the truth, he spent quite a bit of time with me to answer all of my questions very thoroughly. I will be purchasing a station from Weathershack because of your video and the time Wes spent answering questions and offering input. Thanks for a great video and honest opinion.

    I've had a Pro 2 version for 10 or more years and have replaced the wind cups and van a few times as the bears were getting gummed up and measurement was showing wrong. The fan under the temp probe also died and I had to replace it. I also found some C cell buried inside the outdoor unit that I did not know was even there and are the ones the solar cell is charging. It's still a good instrument but does require maintenance.

    • @baronlund9725
      @baronlund9725 4 года назад +2

      @@briank.totten8092 Those C cells are for the aspiration unit in case you do not have one. I had my indoor control panel apart the other day and it's stamped 2005 on the inside. Its been around a while.

    About the barometer sensor... I noticed that you can buy the Davis weather stations without a console and just check it on your phone. If you do that where is the barometer? I really think this is the unit that I'm going to get but a little confused about this one thing.
    Great video!

  • @Superbates123
    @Superbates123 6 лет назад +4

    You mentioned mounting the wind sensor 40’ above the ground. In fact, the NWS will not recognize any wind reading which is higher than 30’ above ground. Second observation - from the looks of your display, the temperature is shown only in whole numbers. You should really have a display with shows temperature in 10ths of a degree (ie 74.2, 74.3, etc.).

    • @rayjackson2724
      @rayjackson2724 2 года назад

      Good comments, I hate to rag on the price but you are correct- temp should be in 10ths of a degree. That sort of accuracy should be expected in a unit of this quality / price. .

    Since this video is four years old and my rain sensor in the unit I received today, this must be the new revised version. It tips only to one side. The station will soon be installed at my countryside house, so with the WeatherLink I can monitor the temperature from my home in Stockholm. So far the electricity in the house has been switched off when I am not there, but as long as I have not installed any solar panels I will need to keep it on to power the station and the internet router. Just a few Watts, so that shouldn't really matter.

    So the thing that annoys me about the Davis weather stations is how far behind the times they were with the control unit, I mean it looks like something I would have back in the early 90s. Yes, I was want the pretty color screen and I want it WiFi connected. Otherwise they are one of the few that work well with various APRS solutions which is what I want. I'm trying to figure out how to get a much newer unit like Ambient Weather has to work with APRS solutions, there are several out there. But I also know that Davis is considered one of the best.... Annoying. Thanks for sharing the video though.

This is one of the maybes, and for now, sits at the top of the list. Would be nice to have a unit that also detects lightning direction, strength, and distance, and shares that to a network. Kinda looking like a lightning monitor might need to be a separate system. Hitting the SUB button!

    Davis user since 2004. Great equipment but poor customer service and support. My console can no longer be updated even though in 2007 I bought the expensive software updater. Now I need to spend $200-300 for replacement parts, or possibly it’s time to move to different platform.
    The console is also antique technology. No color, can’t label extra sensors, b/u battery housing cumbersome, and without updates it needs resetting every few months.

    Ok, after working with Davis Tech Support we finally got the console to read information from the sensor united mounted on the roof of my shed, the WIND sped indicator, and the console read 5 to 7 degrees higher inside temp. unfortunately 2 solid failures right out the box. Tech support is supposed to send a new wind speed unit for the out side unit, that has not shown up yet. I am still waiting to hear whether the console unit is going to be replaced since the inside temperature reading is way off which i indicate is totally unacceptable for the very expensive price of this weather station. I will update my comments when and if Davis gets the entire station working to my expectations. i hope any one reading this to will do their home work when considering this unit.
    Just an update.. talked to Davis Tech Support... They are sending me a replacement console and the new anonometer, and hopefully that resolves the wind indicator problem, but my major concern is that the Indoor temp reads correctly when the Lamp is OFF... and about 5 to 7 degrees higher when the Lamp is on ...what kind of engineering puts out a console that you have leave the Lamp OFF and then make the console UNREADABLE and when the Lamp is on it reads 5 to 7 degrees higher...if this is a 2017 review and they have not rectified the problem by now, I am sorry paying this kind of money for a weather station that is INACCURATE...AND THE THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED IN 5 YEARS....THIS IS NOT A UNIT I CAN RECOMMEND UNLESS THE ONLY THINK YOU WANT TO VIEW IS ALL THE OTHER READING...BUT THINK ABOUT IT... ARE THEY ACCURATE ALSO.

    I'm not sure about the software. What does it offer that wunderground doesn't? I've been very happy with my 2 Ambient 1000's. I'm curious whether I should get this one and what exactly does it give me that the Ambient doesn't? The Ambient gives a lot more sensors for a 3rd of the price. Its monitor station is better in my opinion. I've been following some Davis stations near my home, and they don't seem to be any more accurate than mine, except perhaps for the anemonetor. By the way, Ambient is the most popular of all weather stations so if the weatherman is giving reports for other locations, they are more likely giving Ambient station information.

    The Davis WS looks very impressive. The monitor, with orange background, looks awful a d less sophisticated than the cheap crap models. QUESTION: When you say that the software allows you upload your station's information to WheatherUnderground or other location, do you mean that it isn't reporting automatically? I'd want the info periodically updating. I'm considering this model but not if it has this many procedural barriers. Did I misunderstand? Thanks.

That, and I own an Acurite station, and it's comparable in features and I'd be providing the same level of detail if I were demo'ing the system. With that said, I still plan to upgrade to a Davis system due to the added flexibility and expand-ability that my Acurite doesn't offer.
