I don't think it's completely unfair to view individuals as representative of their group. The thing that is so scary about this case is something my dad brought up to me: if me and my dad were walking on that street and were implicated in the crime then Jesse might have never seen justice. The whole country would have us arrested & with the brothers not coming forward to no admit they were hired by him… we would be in jail for years.
But you would have never been implicated in the crime in the first place because no two white men could ever be placed at the crime scene. here's my idea. He should have thrown a party at his apartment so the story could have been that he was out late at night to get more drinks, got jumped, then returned to the party to have all his friends see him and call the police for him making him look more creditable.
We have different states among the provinces too, btw. I am a criminologist. The states have federal laws that all states share as the provinces have federal Queens Bench laws etc that are shared. But then there are provincial court etc.
I like to think its like a classroom, theres rules all students have to follow, but also each student has his own personal rules for how he likes to interact, such as touching versus non touching.
I think most of the problem here comes from him being a celebrity. That's why he was so sloppy. A lot of people become some level of famous and think they can get away with anything. They think their connections will save them.

But weren't those two people in on it? They weren't exactly innocent, if anything they should get some punishment also, unless I'm completely wrong on it and am confused. Also, we really shouldn't give someone the same sentence for a crime they possibly lied about. If that's the case than no one would come forward as victim of a crime without 100% proof. Imagine being robbed and knowing who did it, but not having 100% air tight proof, getting called a liar then being the one punished for trying to get justice on a person who did you wrong. Rape especially is a very hard one to charge, we'd see people just choose to not come forward, leading to more rapes since people know that if the victim wont attempt to seek justice they wont face any consequence.

19:40 this is already a problem, innocent people will admit guilt to get a lesser sentence such as in the case of Richard Heene (the whole balloon boy scandal). Going to trial and losing on an innocent plea already gets you a worse sentence than a guilty plea in a lot of cases.

I’m not sure if I’d call it customary but it’s pretty common. Usually because the judge wants to “teach the defendant a lesson” but in more publicized cases the judge is essentially laying out the argument to the press for why the defendant is being sentenced or let off.
It’s an explanation for the sentencing. It also serves as a statement to the public as well hoping to add a little bit of discouragement for similar crimes
Aren't there deals sometimes about admiting guilt for a lighter sentence? It's not the same as punishing more for NOT admiting guilt, but the incentive's still there
Technically all plea deals are like that, because admitting guilt is necessary before the court accepts the deal. The vast majority of criminal cases in the US are resolved by admitting guilt in exchange for a lighter sentence, or admitting a lesser crime in exchange for more serious charges being dropped.
In the US, our justice system is ONLY about retribution. Like, legitimately though. It's mostly just about punishment. There is very little to no attempt at rehabilitation here.
I wouldn’t say that. Realistically it depends on the jail/prison you go to. Some are filled with reform programs, others have none and are where the stuff of nightmares happen. This is mainly due to the decentralization of our states, and the VASTLY different opinions we have about how we should treat criminals.

There's so many examples of court recording leading to the accused and the accusers being absolutely destroyed by both the media and society before the case is even decided. Yes, it's extremely important to have transparency, but there needs to be rules in place to stop the media from treating it like a sports event where you pick your sides. The thing that is so scary about this case is something my dad brought up to me: if me and my dad were walking on that street and were implicated in the crime then Jesse might have never seen justice. We have different states among the provinces too, btw. I am a criminologist. The states have federal laws that all states share as the provinces have federal Queens Bench laws etc that are shared. But then there are provincial court etc.

Also, we really shouldn't give someone the same sentence for a crime they possibly lied about. If that's the case than no one would come forward as victim of a crime without 100% proof. Imagine being robbed and knowing who did it, but not having 100% air tight proof, getting called a liar then being the one punished for trying to get justice on a person who did you wrong. Rape especially is a very hard one to charge, we'd see people just choose to not come forward, leading to more rapes since people know that if the victim wont attempt to seek justice they wont face any consequence.
I like how Adum creates a hypothetical system where you get less time if you admit you did the crime, and sees the inherent flaws a system like that wound have, not knowing that is exactly how the courts work in America.

I’m not sure if I’d call it customary but it’s pretty common. Usually because the judge wants to “teach the defendant a lesson” but in more publicized cases the judge is essentially laying out the argument to the press for why the defendant is being sentenced or let off.
It’s an explanation for the sentencing. It also serves as a statement to the public as well hoping to add a little bit of discouragement for similar crimes

It's not the same as punishing more for NOT admiting guilt, but the incentive's still there
Technically all plea deals are like that, because admitting guilt is necessary before the court accepts the deal. The vast majority of criminal cases in the US are resolved by admitting guilt in exchange for a lighter sentence, or admitting a lesser crime in exchange for more serious charges being dropped.

In the US, our justice system is ONLY about retribution. Like, legitimately though. It's mostly just about punishment. There is very little to no attempt at rehabilitation here.
Prisons here make money from the government with each prisoner. So their goal isn't to rehabilitate, but to foster repeat customers.
I wouldn’t say that. Realistically it depends on the jail/prison you go to. Some are filled with reform programs, others have none and are where the stuff of nightmares happen. This is mainly due to the decentralization of our states, and the VASTLY different opinions we have about how we should treat criminals.

You can bitch about the US prison system for a lot of shit, being a money maker for anyone is the single worst thing to say because it's untrue and give cover to the actual problems, like the power of gangs or a lack of proper training for guards.

He faked a hate crime. Claimed that in one of the coldest winter storms Chicago has seen he left his apartment to get some food. Was jumped by people in Donald Trump hats. And put a noose around his neck. He wore the noose when cops showed up. The people who he hired were caught after Chicago police were pressured to find those responsible so it backfired. They turned out to be black immigrants he paid. Our district attorney had originally not planned to prosecute him but somebody found a loophole to do it. That's my bad summary

Because it is. There's so many examples of court recording leading to the accused and the accusers being absolutely destroyed by both the media and society before the case is even decided. Yes, it's extremely important to have transparency, but there needs to be rules in place to stop the media from treating it like a sports event where you pick your sides. Innocent lives are ruined by this.
I don’t agree with a lot of Adum’s takes. He did say he wished they could film trials in Canada and to be fair a lot of our trials (certain trials *cough* Ghislaine Maxwell *cough* are not) are sensationalized like Kyle Rittenhouse’s.
Maybe because most people don't want their extremely personal matters broadcast publicly? Remember, filming court cases doesn't just broadcast the "bad guys", it also broadcasts the innocent victims in a lot of instances.
