  • How to make a Hood for Action Figure Capes, DIY for Marvel Legends & Other Toys
    Hello and welcome back to another toy crafting video. Previously we made some poseable capes for 1/12 scale action figures and since then I’ve received numerous requests to make a hood to go with the capes. Today we’ll make a hood that can be used on Marvel Legends or other action figures.
    In case you missed it, the guide for making a 1/12 scale poseable action figure cape is available here: • How to Make a Poseable...
    The materials you’ll need for this project are:
    26 cm of wire, I’m using 26 Gauge copper wire, but you just need a wire that is easy to bend and will hold its shape once bent under the light weight of cloth.
    Ruler or T-Square: amzn.to/2m3AEED (Amazon Affiliate Link)
    Wire cutters
    Scissors
    Pencil
    Paper
    Needle & thread
    And the most important component of this project is the fabric. I like using a type of fabric called a knit because it doesn’t fray and drapes nicely. Example: www.hobbylobby....
    You’ll want to start by drawing a pattern for the hood on a piece of paper. I’ll share the measurements for my pattern in the video. Cut out the pattern and trace around it on the knit fabric. Cut out the fabric.
    Now fold the hood in half but make sure your pencil marks on the fabric are facing you on the outside. Sew the back of the hood from the bottom up to the top to connect the two pieces in the back. If you need a guide on hand sewing check out my video on How to Make Pillows and Blankets for a toy bed available here: • How to Sew Pillows & B...
    Now I need to cut approximately 26 cm of wire. I’m going to run the wire around all the edges of the hood including the bottom and the entire front section. I bend up the end of the wire to a 90 degree angle just for now to prevent it from pulling out of the sections I’ve sewn.
    For me, it was easiest to start sewing the wire into the hood by beginning at the back of one side. I fold the fabric up over the wire. From the back of the hood I make my way towards the front bottom flap. This is where it gets a little tricky. When I get close to the edge of the flap, I’ll fold the wire 90 degrees followed by another 90 degree angle to follow the shape of the front flap.
    I continue folding the fabric over the wire and work my way around the corners of the flap until I start to reach the curved section of the front of the hood. I bend the wire to follow the curve of the fabric and work my way around the front side of the hood, to the front top of the hood, to the opposite side.
    Once you reach the second flap, you’ll need to bend the wire 90 degrees again twice to follow the contours of the pattern. Then continue sewing until you reach the back of the hood where you started.
    Once you reach the end, I shape the hood by stretching the fabric along the wire to make sure I have enough wire and then trim off the excess wire. I like to fold the ends of the wire upon itself to help prevent it from poking through the fabric.
    With the wire in place, you can shape the hood to fit your character’s costume design by having more of the face in the shadows, or even bending the front lip of the hood down to a tip.
    The end of the video will feature some viewer photos from some of my past projects. If you'd like me to share your photos too, feel free to leave a link to them in the comments below or send them to me on a social networking site:

    Also, I forgot to mention that you can sew the hood to the top of the cape as well. I didn’t do this because I like to keep my pieces separate for mixing and matching. Plus, by not sewing the two together, I can poke Taskmaster’s quiver in the gap between the cape and hood similar to how it’s sometimes drawn in the comics.

      +Robby Collins I'm still trying to work out how to make seams less bulky on 6 inch figures. I've had several requests lately for coats of various types, so if I can pull those off, I might be able to move on to something more complicated like a full costume. One small step at a time. :-)

    Can you try your hood design on the Ben Riley Scarlet-Spider or come up with a way to give him a hood that can be put up and down? That'd be really helpful. I'm using a Scarlet-Spider for my stop motion, and I really wish he had a raised hood. Thanks.

    • @Zubbie
      @Zubbie  7 лет назад +1

      MCwhite Studios hmmm...that's an interesting idea and I can picture how a hood like that would be helpful for stop motion. I think the hood would need to be attached to a sleeveless sweatshirt to cover his current hoodie, or else it may look strange in some shots if you can see both the fabric hood and the sculpted one he comes with.

    • @Zubbie
      @Zubbie  7 лет назад

      Yes, the measurements I used in the Cape video will work for female figures too, but depending on how full you want the cape to be, you may want to make it a bit smaller. Otherwise the cape will be about ankle length. For an example, here's Silk wearing one of Taskmaster's capes: flic.kr/p/RkF3e8

    How can you do the top part of dr. stragnes cape???

    • @Zubbie
      @Zubbie  7 лет назад +1

      I would do the top part of the cape as a separate piece. Cut two identical pieces of fabric that are the shape of the top part of Doctor Strange's cape. Line up the two pieces of fabric an sew the edge of top and side to connect the two pieces of fabric, but leave the bottom part open. Flip it inside out, and you can put wire inside now if you wanted to. Then sew the bottom edge to the top of the cape.
