  • The owner of a stolen semi-truck that led officers on a pursuit before bursting into flames is devastated after being left without a job or a way to support his family. The victim, Edward Guardado, was driving from Los Angeles back to his home in Bakersfield when he decided to make a pit stop and fill up his truck at a gas station near 9500 South Union Avenue in Bakersfield.
The container his truck was carrying was empty at the time. At the pit stop, he entered a restaurant where two men had been watching him. They saw that he had his back turned away and was not looking so they took advantage and just did it,” said Ruby Guardado, the victim’s daughter. A male suspect, Roberto Rivera, 25, quickly jumped into the truck’s driver’s seat and sped off on the southbound 5 Freeway.
KTLA's Rick Chambers reports on Feb. 22, 2024.

Even though, drivers will carry a 2nd key just to lock their doors without having to turn off the engine. Newer Semi’s, may have a “push button ignition” .
Either way, you should never leave it unlocked. Even when I would ride with my husband, we would lock the doors if either of us was left by ourselves when we parked.

WTF did he leave his cab unlocked and the keys in it???
Never - EVER - leave a vehicle unlocked or running at any public place, even your own driveway. Always have the keys on your person and in a way they can be chucked far and fast (preferably up onto a roof) if someone tries to jack your wheels.

[1] Hope the owner of the truck had insurance (Comprehensive Coverage) to cover the theft,
which led to a 'total loss' and help pay for a replacement, subject to his chosen deductible.
[2] Some important & relevant details were conveniently left out of the story
(when Edwin walked away from his truck).
[a] Was the door locked? (Apparently not.)
[b] Were the keys still in the ignition switch and the engine running? (Probably so and why?)
[c] Otherwise, explain how a stranger can 'climb into the cab and drive off'.
[3] Given Edwin's negligence, others can pursue $$$ recovery from him or his Liability insurer
for the property damages that others sustained.

@@fremontpathfinder8463A heavy truck riding on rims grinding into the pavement causes damage to the roadway's surface. If CalTrans or other public agencies decide to repair their roads, they're going to seek reimbursement.
And yes, that P.o.S. thief should be held accountable, since he's the one behind the wheel. However, he is what they refer to in legal circles as 'judgment proof', i.e., he's liable, but has no assets to pay. Which leaves Edwin and his insurer at risk.

@@pvt.2426 Did you notice the drivers shirt ? Lol. And Yes, you are right, this whole event seems to have been staged. I noticed the staging when the truck magically stopped right at the trees ( Lol ) hiding whether or not anyone was even in the truck ( Yes, you can remotely drive anything, even a semi ) , Then we see the man with the backwards cap running up the steep hill , and then the younger man saunters around until he finds an awning that hides what is happening and suddenly CHP officers " catch " him ( Lol ) , but again , we can't see the arrest . It was all a bit much for me. I deemed it theatre and not much more than that. I did go look up the initials on the side of the truck though . The rig appears to belong to some sort of international shipping company based in France with it's emphasis on " globalization " of trade. This company does many things, including transporting hazardous cargo. I'm not really sure what the point of this event was , but I'm guessing somebody was sending some sort of warning to this company. Then again , maybe all these people were bored and just wanted a little excitement.

That's what insurance adjusters do. Settle claims. If there is a claim dispute, it gets settled in court. The insurance companies rarely lose.
