- The owner of a stolen semi-truck that led officers on a pursuit before bursting into flames is devastated after being left without a job or a way to support his family. The victim, Edward Guardado, was driving from Los Angeles back to his home in Bakersfield when he decided to make a pit stop and fill up his truck at a gas station near 9500 South Union Avenue in Bakersfield.
The container his truck was carrying was empty at the time. At the pit stop, he entered a restaurant where two men had been watching him. They saw that he had his back turned away and was not looking so they took advantage and just did it,” said Ruby Guardado, the victim’s daughter. A male suspect, Roberto Rivera, 25, quickly jumped into the truck’s driver’s seat and sped off on the southbound 5 Freeway.
KTLA's Rick Chambers reports on Feb. 22, 2024.

Someone give this driver a job. Horrible for him.
He isn't just a driver, he owned the truck... He is a contractor...
Most of these guys work until they buy their own rigs, then use their own rigs... it is a complete lack of respect for working class Americans...
Swift is always hiring those without their own tractor. Their slogan is "Best in Crash".
If you mean Taylor Swift, she might buy the truck for him!
No company would hire a driver who leaves the truck unlocked and key in the ignition.
@Sovereign_Citizen_LEO
I know society has “allegedly evolved” but in the old West if you stole a man’s horse or livestock it was a hanging offense. Taking away a persons livelyhood, way to support their family or way to eat is pretty serious in my opinion.
Effective, for sure. Even the old "Wild West" wasn't anywhere near as "wild" or ridden with criminality as it is these days, but it did make for some great television and movies with positive moral message.
Devolved since 1965 absolutely. You cannot call this progress.
it's awful a good hard working man has to take a loss like this.
Trucking is so hard right now in California, hopefully he can recover
This is what happens when there are no consequences for criminal behaviour.
Yeah like sneaking in the United States, never leave your keys in your vehicle
Why someone would steal someone's career that allows him to support his family is so stupid and even if insurance covers it he is still out of work until then.... What a waist.
¡It is a WAIST, especialmente por que no tiene la asegurancia!
Well, Edward can come to LA and work for Metro, as we are always hiring drivers like him. Hope that helps.
Oh? Drivers who leave their vehicles unlocked, unattended, and running or with the keys in them?
Prison for Life!!!
What was the objective of the guy who stole the truck, particularly as he was being pursued by CHP? I don't really understand the continual driving on the rims. Did he really think he was going to get away at that point?
Why do people use the little money they have on drugs instead on food? Why do people drink and drive? Why are there people that have been incarcerated and end up doing something again to go back? People are just people and that's our world.

"One of the men jumped in the truck and sped away."
How?
How did some random 25 year old jump into a Big Rig, and speed off?

Poor guy lost everything for nothing. Idiots stole an empty trailer, burned the truck and got caught. All around terrible situation. I feel bad for the trucker.
#1 RULE in Truckdriving - NEVER LEAVE THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION AND ALWAYS “LOCK YOUR DOORS”!! The Owner Driver is responsible for this happening. WTH was he thinking leaving his semi unlocked and with keys in it, especially in California !!!!
This was a very expensive lesson to learn … the owner will be lucky if insurance pays for it ..
Victim blaming...👍
@@DemonKittyx19 ummm .. do you lock your house doors and vehicle doors ? It really makes me wonder if they were working together to collect on the Insurance Money ? Why would anyone leave their vehicle unattended and unlocked, especially, a Semi Truck ?
You can’t just turn a semi on and off like a car. But times are changing that’s true. Heck, I remember our parents taking us shopping and never worrying about locking the door 🚪 Then kids also ran and played outside with no problems. Then people got arms and defended themselves. Remember those days.

I was married to a Truckdriver for 20 years. I believe I know what I am talking about. That is true if the driver is pulling a refrigerated trailer. He wasn’t. He was pulling an empty trailer. Even though, drivers will carry a 2nd key just to lock their doors without having to turn off the engine. Newer Semi’s, may have a “push button ignition” .
Either way, you should never leave it unlocked. Even when I would ride with my husband, we would lock the doors if either of us was left by ourselves when we parked.
Just, plain common sense..
Well as long as he had a driver license and insurance on his truck than he should be able to get a new Truck! Never know could end up with something better in the long run! Praying 🙏 on it that the Lord JESUS will gets you through this!
Knowing current insurance companies practices, they’ll claim the driver was at fault for leaving the keys in the ignition without him in the truck to try and get out of covering such a complete loss. It’s F’d up but, he’ll be lucky if the insurance company only finds him partially at fault and pay some of the trucks cost

this is very sad with bad time of trucking industry and his truck gone
This was sad but very preventable!!!! Everyone knows that you don't leave your keys in the your vehicle. This incident is his own fault and he is old enough to know better. We live in a world where nothing is safe and to leave your keys inside your vehicle while you "just run inside" for a minute. Even a child knows better. Kids can't leave their bikes anywhere locked or not because there are countless thieves just waiting for an opportunity to steal a bike. This man brought harm to himself and his family for being so ignorant. I don't know if the truck was insured or not but even if it was I doubt the insurance company would pay for the loss because the driver was at fault 😢 for leaving the truck unattended with the keys inside.
The truck-hating laws in CA will make it even harder for him to bounce back.

I'm a 30yr. old retired semi driver, how did the suspect steal the semi? Hot Wired?? Or maybe the driver left the rig running??? Whenever I left my rig, even in the winter, I shut down my truck and locked it. I feel for this driver, BUT! I came up with a safer alternative than using spike strips years ago and the U.S. patent office turned it down. Look what the result of using them was. Can't believe they still use these.
[1] Hope the owner of the truck had insurance (Comprehensive Coverage) to cover the theft,
which led to a 'total loss' and help pay for a replacement, subject to his chosen deductible.

And yes, that P.o.S. thief should be held accountable, since he's the one behind the wheel. However, he is what they refer to in legal circles as 'judgment proof', i.e., he's liable, but has no assets to pay. Which leaves Edwin and his insurer at risk.

It was all a bit much for me. I deemed it theatre and not much more than that. I did go look up the initials on the side of the truck though . The rig appears to belong to some sort of international shipping company based in France with it's emphasis on " globalization " of trade. This company does many things, including transporting hazardous cargo. I'm not really sure what the point of this event was , but I'm guessing somebody was sending some sort of warning to this company.
