Unbelievable. This is one of the most emotional and moving pieces of music that has ever been written. I was unaware of this version until today. She more than nails it and leaves me with tears in my eyes.
Incredible. This brings back my wonderful wife, now gone for 5 years. She always wept at the inhuman idea that anyone could slaughter small children. It's me who's crying now at this awful memory when I was a youth in WWII.
GORECKI, THE POLISH SYMPHONY, BETH GIBBONS THANK YOU FOR THIS HAUNTINGLY POIGNANT AND BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART AND SADLY, EVER SO RELEVANT TODAY WITH WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR MESSED UP WORLD
I was clicking through artists on Spotify and noticed that Beth had something new. 10 minutes after listening through it I had an LP ordered. That's that.
Beth Gibbon's hauntingly beautiful voice is so fitting for Henryk Górecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. It shows how talented Beth really is, yet the world contains so few recordings of her beautiful voice.
Arguably the most important classical work of the 20th century, astonishing long measures of intensity... Beth Gibbons voice has an intimate and wide dynamic range and she chooses musical associations of extreme authenticity: the likes of Adrian Utley in Portishead (a master of sythetic sound) and partner work with Rustin Man (a master of analogue soundscapes). The authenticity of Gorecki is beyond debate and Beth Gibbons seems to add a sense of moment. Such a vocal range (!), nice recording and with some expressionist overlays it looks great. Big news.
@@LaughingStock_ Thanks Martin :-) I made a short film from a piece by Gorecki: www.flickr.com/photos/ajmitchell-prehistory/48626277621/in/album-72157708838902433/ No Beth here, but you may enjoy the piece - it's less well know.
"Mamo, nie płacz, nie Niebios Przeczysta Królowo Ty zawsze wspieraj mnie Zdrowaś Mario" "Mother, do not cry, no Most pure, Queen of Heaven Protect me always Hail Mary" ---- Poem by Polish girl Helena Błażusiakówna. She scratched it on a cell wall after being arrested by Nazis in 1944.
This is quite possibly one of the most incredible renditions of this particular piece of music that I've ever heard. From Giuseppe in Cape Town South Africa xxx
My first experience last week hearing Beth Gibbons. It came up on my Amazon channel. I immediately wrote the song down as Beth’s beautiful, emotional voice captured me. Now I listen every day to this phenomenal composition which is only made perfect with Beth’s heartfelt voice.
Voz maravilhosa de uma das melhores artistas "não-conhecidas"... Aqui no Brasil então... Estamos muito distantes de tamanho bom gosto! Beth Gibbons... Portishead... Música de verdade. Emoção.
Incríveis essa voz, essa entrega, essa orquestra 👏👏👏 Muito bom ver gente talentosa da musica pop trazendo para nós as belezas da música clássica. Obrigado!!!
This is gorgeous. I already have the Upshaw CD but Beth's delivery is different emotionally: more pain, more sorrow, deffo worth having both! By the way the youtube compression has caused some background digital hiss/noise/whisperings. This normally happens when the CD rip is encoded into MP3 before putting in the video-editor: the video-rendering then further compresses the audio, then youtube compresses it again while it's uploading. These three different forms of compression result in slight background digital noise on online playback, even if HD-playback is selected.
All due respect. The vocal of Zofia from the other version is so powerful, with a vibrato available high and low... It makes the whole arrangement different, better for me. Try that.
"The World At War" programme used this beautiful music but only the start where the strings play that soleum, haunting piece for the Jewish people of the concentration camps,It's so sad but beautiful music.
Second movement's lyrics are words of 18 year old girl named Helena Błażusiak etched in the wall of gestapo prison cell. Tortured by germans, She used her own knocked out tooth to do it.
I just discovered Beth Gibbons & Portishead, if I'm allowed to say that band name here. Not sure where I was all those Portishead years. I'm glad Beth is doing new things, but damn honey, you take yourself way too seriously. Loosen up, you're my age. Relax.
She suffers from crippling anxiety. Any time you see her actually performing it's anything short of a miracle. I think she's only been interviewed once or twice in her entire career.
Oh, good Lord it touched my soul so deeply.. it's so sooo beautiful... I can't decribe how grateful I am for people like you who live here with us, belong us, and make this life wonderful, and make our lives worth living.
Beth Gibbons dud not just perform Gorecki's masterpiece....,she lived it.....Touches the soul and how much I miss ny mum and dad....

Appreciate that
Her voice has so much intrinsic pain and sadness without wallowing in anger and yet hopeful all at the same time.
I am polish and lyrics make me literally cry as a baby. All the love in her voice makes me cry even more.
To prawda
Słowa są rozdzierające i jej drżący głos...można zapłakać
Proszę sprobowac wercji spiewanej przez Zofie. Jest o wiele mocniejsza.
Exquisite. Beth's vocal is so abject. She nails the humanity of this piece
Unbelievable. This is one of the most emotional and moving pieces of music that has ever been written. I was unaware of this version until today. She more than nails it and leaves me with tears in my eyes.
Me too! Holy shit!
Incredible. This brings back my wonderful wife, now gone for 5 years. She always wept at the inhuman idea that anyone could slaughter small children. It's me who's crying now at this awful memory when I was a youth in WWII.
Karl. Fabulous words, your wife was clearly beautiful in all ways
No lo mi

Couldn't think of a vocalist that would be more perfect for this piece.
Henryk’s master piece and my favourite female singer, stunning.
I was clicking through artists on Spotify and noticed that Beth had something new. 10 minutes after listening through it I had an LP ordered. That's that.
Yeah!!
💞😇🎶 Voice of an angel. We need more Beth Gibbons. Any style.
I am impressed with her expression and emotions, voice is just the cherry on top

What a fabulous rendition of Gorecki’s symphony of sadness! Beth Gibbons sounds genuinely sad and vulnerable.
Literally had to stop everything that I was doing today. And just take time out for a bit. Oh my god
"Mamo, nie płacz, nie.
Niebios Przeczysta Królowo,
Ty zawsze wspieraj mnie.
Zdrować Mario, Łaskiś Pełna" ... pouring honey on my heart
Incredible. Long time fan of Beth Gibbons (amazing than she can cross such diverse genres) but this is my first intro to Henry’s Gorecki’s work

I completely agree with you. That was unbelievable, truly amazing and beautiful...
Excellent mini-review, Andrew.

Thank you for introducing me to one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.
Gorecki had a moment of genius, then drifted away to obscurity as before. But he left us this

As soon as I saw this pop up on RUclips, I knew she'd nail it. And she did.
This is my most favorite composed piece of music ever, next to Lysol by Melvins.
I'm so happy that Beth Gibbons is back!
It could be... she never left (us).

Brutal
All due respect. The vocal of Zofia from the other version is so powerful, with a vibrato available high and low... It makes the whole arrangement different, better for me. Try that.
Her voice so full of pain, which is missing from Dawn Upshaw...a trained vocalist..
"The World At War" programme used this beautiful music but only the start where the strings play that soleum, haunting piece for the Jewish people of the concentration camps,It's so sad but beautiful music.

God is grief.

A little disappointed in the second movement compared to the 3rd

I just facepalmed at this comment.
She suffers from crippling anxiety. Any time you see her actually performing it's anything short of a miracle. I think she's only been interviewed once or twice in her entire career.
Try to deliver this work of art the way she did then tell us if it can be done "lightly".
You're missing something, you may want to read something about this work. So...you're 99? ;-)
This is the worst interpretation of this masterpiece I have ever heard ☹️
Oh, good Lord it touched my soul so deeply.. it's so sooo beautiful...
I can't decribe how grateful I am for people like you who live here with us, belong us, and make this life wonderful, and make our lives worth living.
